Tex Murphy #2.5

Tex Murphy And The Romanov Enigma

Rate this book
Trouble's like glitter...I keep finding it everywhere.

It's June 2043 and almost two months have gone by since Tex Murphy, P.I. wrapped up his last job. The search for Thomas Malloy and the Pandora Device had nearly gotten him killed. Now he's dying of boredom.

Lonely, too.

During the Malloy case, following a poorly-executed first date, Tex's dream girl, Chelsee Bando, left town to get some space, think things over, and decide what she wanted to do with her life. Or something like that. When she returned, Chelsee had decided to move on...and into the virtual arms of a Cary Grant hologram.

When she shows up unexpectedly at Tex's door - along with a new prospective client - Tex can hardly believe his luck. Not only is he gainfully employed, he gets one last chance to impress Chelsee with his amazing P.I. skills, win her affection, get paid, and then live happily ever. All he has to do is solve the biggest, most dangerous case of his career.

Two Russian siblings have disappeared with newly-discovered Enigma Machine documents that may lead to a lost Romanov treasure. Where there's treasure, there's pirates, and it's not long before they're trying to put Tex in Davy Jones' locker. He'll have to navigate treacherous waters in a race to find a fortune...and a world-changing secret that's been buried for over a hundred years.

Another masterpiece from Aaron Conners, “The Romanov Enigma” is not only a nail-biter in and of itself, but an excellent bridge between “The Pandora Directive” and “Tesla Effect”.

A literal international tour-de-force that takes Tex from the familiar haunts on Chandler Avenue to a sunken submarine to the very ends of the earth, this book is expertly written, unbelievably funny, and a joy in itself.

The ending left me with a few questions that I’m hoping a re-reading of “Tesla Effect” will answer.

My biggest question: Is the mysterious Rakoczi perhaps a larger, European gentleman we see throughout “Tesla Effect” and “The Poisoned Pawn?” If so, perhaps I’m missing something as to why he seems to be meeting Tex for the first time in “Tesla Effect”.

In any case, great novel. Let’s bring on the last one as quickly as possible!

This is one of the Tex Murphy stories I've enjoyed the most for two reasons: First, it explains what happened after The Pandora Directive, a mystery I waited years to solve; second, it is the first completely new Tex Murphy book, it is not based in any game.

The joy of reading how the story develops in the charming and funny Tex Murphy voice is a pleasure, as is to see everything so well explained. We have new characters and also the regulars making an appearance. Deeply emocional at times and often hilarious, it is without a doubt the greatest detective story I've read in years.

I hope the saga never ends and we are guaranteed at least one more story, so I am a happy man. Buy this book, you won't regret it.

The story is a bit lazy. Yet another “what happened before the events of Tesla Effect”. I am a big Tex Murphy fan but I am not sure we needed an entire book retelling the story. (Or what’s in between with pretty much the same characters) Especially after The Poisoned Pawn. I feel like we are exploring the same TM universe for the 3rd time in a row and what we discover in the Romanov Enigma is not necessarily worthwhile. Can we focus on a brand new story next time? I believe Conners is working on 2 more books?

Lots of great story lines, and plot twists. But the end goes kinda flat. Story lines just fizzle out

In a perfect world, there would be a game of that...

Anyway, the book is what we have, and it is great. Finally, many questions were answered. Can I believe that it has been more than 10 years since Tesla Effect? Of course not. I´ll pretend it was, like, three years ago.

This is probably my third favorite Tex book (in order: Killing Moon, Poisoned Pawn, this one, Tesla and Pandora), and, although a bit long - it dragged down a bit about chapter 40 - I´m impressed how much love and care was given to this book.

Some fantastic lines! I wish I had the patience of writing some of them down to show to you. Maybe another day.

This book is a continuation of the storyline from the Tex Murphy video game series. If you are reading this series, you likely loved the characters from the games and always wanted to spend just a little bit more time with them.

I wouldn't have predicted all of those years ago that we'd be where we are now, but I am grateful for the author taking considerable time to continue to write to finish this story. The release of this book was a very pleasant surprise, and the possibility of one more book in the series brings both hope that I will be able to spend just a bit more time with Tex, but also real sadness that there is a finite amount of story left to be written.

I was very impressed with how the author found a way to resolve some of the missing years in Tex's memory. It speaks to the author's skill and creativity. While a reader would need to read the rest of the series (and recognize how many years this was in the making) to appreciate what the author did here, I hope that this book is remembered as some of the author's best writing.

As a lifelong fan of Tex Murphy, I want to thank the author and his colleagues for their persistent work. These characters, and this story, have brought a lot of joy to my life, and I'm so glad that I was around at the right time to get to know Tex.
