Marrisse Whittaker has been creating characters for all of her working life, first as a TV and Film Make-Up Artist, where she might have been called upon to construct a corpse, age an actor by a hundred years, or make a real-life drug-raddled rock star look desirable.

Next as a TV Scriptwriter, creating stories for popular series such as CBBC’S Byker Grove, BBC’s Doctors and Channel 4 Hollyoaks.

But plenty of drama takes place in real-life too and when Marrisse joined forces with her husband, former TV Journalist Bob Whittaker, to establish Orion TV, they produced a fascinating range of factual programmes for major broadcasters.

Now creating a scene has taken on a new meaning for Marrisse since 2020, when she launched a new career as a novelist, writing crime fiction.

Living by the sea in rural Northumberland, Marrisse likes to invent murder and mayhem whilst travelling far and wide or walking through the surf and turf landscape on her doorstep, whilst eating lots of chocolate.

The 5th in the Billie Wilde Series of books and Billie is now a partner in PI company Wilde and Darque. Whilst her business partner Ellis Darque is happy with the mundane cases, tailing adulterous husbands and the like, Billie is getting bored and a case investigating threats against Porkies Big Eats bakery chain provides the potential for a more exciting case. Billie is also still heavily involved with Freedom Angels and is concerned to find children have been going missing and shockingly a number found dead, horribly mutilated. Billie is a great character, I’ve loved following her stories and this is another cracker.

Briefly, as the Porkies Big Eats case progresses the threats from the animal welfare activists become more serious and whilst Billie thinks they should involve the authorities both Ellis and the company owner are against this and Wilde and Darque continue their undercover investigation. Meanwhile, the National Crime Agency are investigating the murders and in the course of investigations Billie meets up with Matteo Scalera from the NCA and there is a definite attraction simmering there.

Alongside the two cases Ellis is still holding a candle for Billie but his feelings are not reciprocated and I found it very disconcerting how he allowed his youngest daughter to call Billie ‘Mummy’ despite Billie making it clear it was inappropriate. I was getting uncomfortable vibes from Ellis from the start. There is another thread involving Ellis’s eldest daughter Maya that is also giving Billie cause for concern. So much going on but the author brings all the threads together seamlessly. There are some fairly gruesome scenes in the book but nothing gratuitous. I really enjoyed this book which has some great twists and turns and a very satisfying conclusion. Brilliant read.

As you can imagine, the thing that drew me to this book initially was this fantastic front cover! - as well as the title!

I read Buried Dreams by this author back in January and absolutely loved it!
We are back with Billie and Ellis and so it was great to have some extra insight into the characters already - and although this could be read as a standalone, I'd actually suggest that you read the other book first to help with the references to past cases.
Having said this, I did mention in my last review that Billie actually has a whole other series from before that I'm still to catch up with.

I love Billie and Ellis and it was great to see them teaming up on a new case. They definitely have a lot on their hands this time round.

I love that there's a lot going on in this, from death threats to asylum seekers which keeps us busy trying to keep track of the different storylines weaving around each other.
This is all really well plotted and presented in a way that keeps things moving and doesn't get too complex, all the while, making us work to try and solve the case before the reveal......which once again, I didn't have a clue!

I love this authors writing style which grabs you in right from the start and keeps me turning this leaves and sneaking in extra chapters here and there.

I know I said last time, but I really want to dig into Billie's original series as they really are a great character to explore and I'd love to follow that through frombthe original ....just needd someone to lend me a few more hours a day to make time.....

Another brilliant story, but maybe something on the cover or order page to let everyone know that it's part of a series, would be great.
I know some don't worry - but I love to make sure I read books in order if possible.

Wilde & Darque investigation team have been in the spotlight a lot lately.
Billie Wilde and her partner Ellis Darque are a team.
Tanko Abubaker has no home a fifteen year old asylum seeker and nowhere to run has now gone missing and he is not the first.
Kids are living alone in the asylum hotel and it shocks Billie, for this a work of fiction, comes to life from this unique story teller.
Backstabber is the best I have read in this series so far, that is so blinding with graphic details in every chapter, that will send shivers all the way down your spine. I LOVED IT.

When I started reading this book, I had no idea that it's part of a series.
Although I understood the book and enjoyed it, there was a lot of references to the past and what had happened in previous cases, and I think I'd I had understood all the backstory and characters, I would have enjoyed it even more.
A great read, with a fast paced storyline.
The ending was amazing and I felt like I held my breathe - and I didn't See the twists coming at all.

Great book, would highly recommend.

All the regular characters are back in this second book. Ash is now a DSI, still living in Billie’s basement flat although on better terms with his ex-wife Jas, and Boo, along with Ellis’s elder daughter Maya who dropped out of police training after her traumatic time in the previous story, is managing the Freedom Angels refugee centre to which Billie has donated a substantial inheritance. Dozens of vulnerable and traumatized child asylum seekers have disappeared around the country, including many from her own area in the last few months, after being homed in unmanned children’s hotels and falling prey to criminals, kidnapped into slavery by the gangs who trafficked them. At the centre Billie learns about another one, fifteen-year-old Nigerian Tanko, mute from fear, and is frustrated that her new role as PI limits her ability to get involved, even though the police have no resources or seemingly inclination to do so themselves, and so Billie is determined to find out more. Ash is called away to an RTA where another missing boy has just gone under the wheels of a truck, aged just eleven years old. What was he running from and will Tanko, who witnessed his fall, make it to safety? Meanwhile Billie and her partner, ex NCA operative Ellis Darque have a new case of their own. Porkie’s Big Eats Pies are being threatened and tampered with, and there’s only a week left before the poisoner’s deadline! Their undercover work doesn’t go quite according to plan, although it does reveal various motives for the threats and there are plenty of options including the animal rights protesters right outside the flagship outlet but is it that simple? To add to their problems, Ellis’s ex-wife Storm Benbow has crawled out of the woodwork after being AWOL for a year, just as he is about to get full custody of his other daughter, five-year-old Connie. Storm wants her back – over his dead body! – whilst older daughter Maya is under the sway of a nauseating photographer and is in danger of becoming a bit of a brat. All these threads converge as events escalate in a desperate race to save lives and foil a plot before Porkies really do become pies to die for!
This is a thoroughly engrossing story with a great plot and absolutely loads to keep the reader hooked right the way through to the thrilling end, excellently written and with some very topical themes. When Billie left the police, I did initially wonder if I would enjoy these PI stories as much as the previous three but apart from her status as a serving officer, not too much has actually changed as most of the old faces are still around, albeit some now in different roles, and the whole set up works really well. Jimmy the Hat is a wonderful character, probably my favourite in this story, although there are plenty of other great people who make up a kind yet formidable team around Billie. I do hope there will be more stories to come.

I couldn’t wait to read Marrisse Whittaker’s new crime thriller, Backstabber.
It has the author’s trademark fast pace and such unforgettable characters, many of whom appeared in previous books. It is still possible to read Backstabber as a stand-alone but why would you want to miss out on the amazing back catalogue?
I was thrilled to be back in the world of Billie Wilde and it was worth the wait.

Backstabber takes the reader into the world of industrial espionage, animal welfare activists and the shocking world of children asylum seekers who have disappeared from private hotels without trace.

Billie Wilde feels conflicted that her present job as a private investigator is not fulfilling her need to be involved in serious crime. Her former colleagues from the local murder investigation team are investigating the deaths of vulnerable victims who have passed through Freedom Angels. Billie Wilde has invested her time and inheritance to help set up Freedom Angels, an organisation to give child asylum seekers a safe place and she desperately wants to be involved in solving the case.

It seems that Billie may be regretting her new career choice and it is not long before she becomes a major player in the murder case after meeting Matteo Scalera from the National Crime Agency who is part of the investigation.

As Wilde and Darque become embroiled in the investigation of threats to poison food sold by Porkies Big Eats chain and the murder investigation by the NCA gathers pace it is not too long before the two cases collide. In a catastrophic climax Billie will need to evaluate her life and career.

What a thrilling read. 5 stars from me!
Thanks to the author and Bloodhound Books for an arc in return for an honest review.

Review

There is a lot of action in this book, with the two investigations going on simultaneously. This involves some overlap, near misses and coincidences, which ended up a little bit much for me at times.

There are references (not spoilers) to earlier events, so it may be worthwhile reading the first book before this one, although this one is perfectly enjoyable as a standalone.

The book is well-written and, despite the difficult subject matter, I enjoyed it!

Thanks to the author,  and Bloodhound Books for the eARC of this book.

Who can you trust in a world full of back stabbers?
Just like the previous books featuring Billie Wilde you will be hooked from page 1...
Billie is back again, along with Ellis her business partner in their Private investigators roles. This time they've been tasked with finding out who has been sending death threats to the bakery and the investigation leads to dressing as pigs, a hit or two to the face, pies full of glass and if that wasn't enough, Billie involves herself in a case of finding missing asylum seeking children. It's a race against time for all parties involved and working out who is back stabbing who?
The way the characters link and the story rolls around show just how well thought out the storyline has been, a few shocks along the way and helped by the characters coming to life with the way Marrisse writes, helps set the scene well.
If you read one book this year make it this one.
Yet again another spectacular book by Marrisse and I for one would Love to see this (along with the previous books!) on the big screen!

This is book five in the Billie Wilde series but reads very well as a standalone. Former high ranking cop Billie Wilde is now a partner in a Private Investigators company alongside her friend Ellis Darque. Whilst he is happy with the everyday mundane investigations Wilde is looking for something a bit more challenging.
Taking on a contract with a large pie making company following death threats to the company whet the appetite a bit however Wilde is more concerned with the disappearance of asylum seeking youngsters from special hotels.
A frenetic paced book with lots of action and mystery as is the norm with this author and her characters. There are killings, one of the partners being thrown in jail, injuries to the other partner. Domestic upheaval, twists and turns and above all a thrilling climax.
What's not to like!

WoW...........Backstabber: by Marrisse Whittaker was a superb book from start to finish it was a gripping crime mystery and it was full of brilliant twists and turns throughout and very addictive which made it hard to put my kindle down.
All the characters were excellent and were great especially as they all fitted in within the story. Which was great as I have not read any books within this series before it became an enjoyable read and a great standalone book.

The book cover was chilling and just caught my eye and was excellent cover for this book!

This book was so good!!!! I highly recommend it.

At last! A crime thriller that breathes fresh air into the genre with an original and gripping plot, rather than yet another whodunit. The story is realistic and gritty and concerns a practice this country has every reason to be ashamed of - our appalling treatment of immigrants, most of whom have travelled here under utterly terrifying circumstances. The characterisation is very evocative, capturing the plight of young immigrants fleeing one version of hell only to find themselves in another.
Billie Wilde is a character already well known to fans of Marrisse Whittaker, and several other characters from previous novels appear here, in a fast-paced, page-turning novel that is a real cut above the rest.

Another shocker in the spin off from the Billie Wilde series… but this time the surprises may also be for Billie?
Marrisse Whittaker has yet again managed to home in on a topical subject that is current….and very disturbing!! As always, she deals with the subject matter in a manner that pulls no punches – but also lets us consider all sides of the story, and her superb development of characters draws us in to their point of view.
There is lots of content and details to absorb, but the emphasis in this book is, I feel, more on relationships…But who EXACTLY is doing the Backstabbing?… and will we be satisfied with the outcome…or left wanting more?

📖 Book Review

Backstabber by Marrisse Whittaker
Bloodhound Books, 15th July 2024

Although this is book five in the series to feature private investigator Billie Wilde and her partner Ellis Darque, it reads well as a standalone. In Backstabber, the duo face the unique task of investigating death threats against a local bakery, as someone has messed with their pies. But Wilde and Darque clash on how to handle the case. Both personalities come across well, and you get a real sense of their back stories from hints that are dropped. It's enough to make me want to read the series from the beginning.

Billie also tries to discover what is happening to young asylum seekers who are disappearing without a trace in a politically-charged sub-plot. The emotive subject matter had me on the edge of my seat throughout, and the author's fine attention to detail is superb. This is an outstanding crime thriller!

I didn’t know this book was part of a series when I started reading it, so there were quite a lot of references about previous cases from the past that I didn’t get, but even so the book can be read as a standalone, but not getting the full context on the background of the main characters.
His book was really a page turner with lots of twists and turns and unexpected surprises. It grabs your attention and doesn’t let go of it until you finish the last page and say “wow, this was really good”.
I highly recommend the book, and now that I know is part of a series I’m going to start reading the series from the beginning.

This is another great book in the series. The title is very appropriate.

Billie and Ellis are tasked with finding the person who is threatening a pork pie business which starts to escalate beyond mere threats. At the same time, someone is abducting children from an asylum centre and this tragic story also starts to horrifically escalate. This side of the story was quite emotional and shocking. There's a lot of personal turmoil also for both main characters and the ending...wow! Not sure what is next in store for the PI team but I can't wait to find out.

This was a good suspenseful read. Upsetting storyline with unaccompanied young asylum seekers being kidnapped and forced to work and murdered. Former crack DCI Billie Wilde and her partner in the Private Investigator Agency they set up, Ellis, are unofficially on the case alongside investigating potential pie poisoning at Porkie's Pies. However unlikely, the two cases overlap, alongside Ellis' custody battle for his young daughter. Plenty of action, jeopardy and emotion. And a hint of romance. #backstabber #bloodhoundbooks

I received this book for free from Bloodhound Books.

This book is part of a series, but I feel it can be read as a stand alone.

Although this book is a work of fiction, I feel it very poignantly tells the story of young asylum seekers.

It really opens your eyes to what is going on right under your nose.

I really struggled with this book - but I had not read the prequel to it, so I found that there were references to previous events that I had no clue about, and relationships that were obviously set up in previous books that it became aware I needed to know.

Wow. Apart from a couple of bits that didn’t quite seem to read right, this book had me gripped. The plight of the poor children but also the background narratives were so good. Its sad to know things like this happen now in the Uk and yet as a country we turn a blind eye.

Billie Wilde has another case to solve, but this one is not quite what it seems. The usual crew are all involved, and each has a part to play in the story.North Northumberland is a brilliant backdrop to the adventure. The pace is great, ramping up towards the end. A great read.

I read this book without knowing it is book 5 in a series. I thought it was good but I want to go back and read the others in the series so as I can get a better feel for the characters but saying that it has good characters and good storyline. Think I’ve just found a new series to get into.

(Disclaimer: I was sent an ARC copy from Bloodhound Books for an honest review)

Billie Wilde is a private investigator. She and her partner are asked to investigate when someone is trying to sabotage a big company which manufactures and sells pies.
In the meantime Billie is also involved in an organisation taking care of unaccompanied child refugees which is run by a friend of hers. When a group of thesey children are kidnapped by child traffickers she wants to find them.
I enjoyed the book but hadn’t realised it is actually the fifth in a series. You don’t need to have read them all but there are references to Billie’s previous job as a police officer and obviously a lot of history between her and the other main characters.
The relationship between her and her business partner Ellis is a bit dysfunctional especially with his five year old daughter insisting on calling Billie “mummy”.
The two stories run along together with some sad scenes involving the main child refugee who escaped from his war torn village for a better life in the U.K.
There were a few convenient coincidences to interactions between characters but overall not a bad conclusion.
I now have the first book in the series to read to see if I can make a bit more sense of the back story.

It’s my first book by this author and I know there have been other books in the series and while there are references to the earlier ones, I now have to go and read them which isn’t exactly a hardship because if they are anything like this one, then I have a lot to look forward to.
