Sometimes, the riskiest business deal is falling in love with the one you can't have...
When Daphne Delphine returns to Chicago's elite Gold Coast after her father's death, she finds more than grief waiting for her. Her family's retail empire is crumbling, her marriage is in shambles, and the only man who can help her happens to be the one she can't have—Cal Markham, Chicago's charismatic billionaire mayor and her late father's best friend.
They have history: one wild weekend in Hawaii a decade ago that neither can forget. Now, as Cal steps in to help save Delphine Holdings, that spark reignites into an inferno. But timing has never been their strong suit. He's fighting for his political future, and she's battling her brother for control of the family empire.
When Daphne's vengeful ex unleashes a scandal that could destroy everything, Cal must choose: his career or the woman who sets his world on fire. In the game of power and privilege, love might be the riskiest business of all.
EXECUTIVE DECISION is the first book in the Lakeshore Empire Series, perfect for fans of Succession and Rivals. This steamy, high-stakes romance features:
Age gap Father's best friend Billionaire Romance Second chance Political intrigue Family dynasty drama
Maude Winters is a romance author who writes cozy and spicy fiction. She’s a horse girl through-and-through and lives in the Midwest with her husband, horse girl daughter, and two dogs.
Maude has lived throughout the world but attributes her interest in writing about the intersection of modern politics, feminism, and royalty with her time spent in the UK as a twenty-something.
I was blessed with being sent an ARC and aim to give my honest feedback. Starting off with the forbidden aspect is a great lead in. Cal is in his 30s while Daphne is in her 20s and JUST starting at her dad’s company. Their lives are so interconnected it’s interesting to piece together. Going straight for the big guns and having that strong and bossy of an FMC was definitely new for me but I didn’t hate it at all. The 6 year jump and what you read happens to Daphne is insane and made me want to throw my phone across the room to be totally honest. Hitting the present day part it gets super slow going and I honestly have to fight to keep up and carry on. I am NOT happy with where everyone’s lives are at currently and I cannot wait for it to pick up and get to the good parts. Everyone’s lives went to crap and it’s eating at me to not jump to the good stuff to be totally honest. I enjoy the layout and the concept. How it was broken up into parts but the burn is slow and my heart breaks with how our strong FMC is right now. This book has taken me for a RIDE and definitely toyed with my emotions with the ups and downs, the 2 steps forward to only take 10 back it seems. The little details throughout are absolutely important and it hurts to keep going sometimes because of how slow it is (I’m an insta-love lover) BUT the ending is absolutely worth it and the little victories throughout are amazing. The character growth and them waiting until they are older to finally give in was the smart choice and you can absolutely see that when you get there. In the end we get our happily ever after and it ends the book beautifully. It was a messy love but the 11 year walkthrough and the 6 year jump had a huge impact in the storyline and definitely put their relationship into perspective fully. It’s not one of my top favorites and it definitely had my emotions on a rollercoaster but it was a sweet read and a beautiful love story for sure. I would fully recommend this for anyone that loves a slow burn romance. The forbidden aspect is tempting but the age gap is absolutely what sold me. I’m not sure what it is but I love a good age gap and they definitely have that!
Both of the MCs have very toxic relationships with their mothers.
Unfortunately, for me, there’s nothing sexy when a 50 yo guy says “I’m a big boy, mom” Sir, you’re in the later part of middle age, you ain’t a boy. Neither a big boy. You are an almost 50 y.o man.
They were both extremely rich BUT they didn’t have PA’s or something to do their grocery shopping and other similar jobs? Like… some of the things were not quite believable. HOW were they ridiculously rich? Cause I didn’t see it. Mentioning balls and galas and stuff like that ain’t making them rich. The overall lifestyle I read is making the characters rich, even if they are veeeery down to earth old/new money.
This is a second chance and blah blah, but really there wasn’t any real drama. Just not mature reactions from a 30+ yo woman and a 45+ yo man. If you want your MCs to act as Young Adults, maybe write a book with more appropriate ages? When I read about characters that are older than me, I expect to find some maturity in their thinking process and how they handle their feelings and situations. Both MCs are hiding like teenagers from their mothers until 70%. Like.. we are talking about a man at his late 40s. LATE 40s. And a FMC at her middle 30s. Like, WHY is it a problem your mom found out you’re on the pill? Why do you even explain it to her? WHY are you talking to your mother on the first place? She is the one that forced you to get married to the abusing husband!!
Multiple mentions about her ex husband telling bad things about her in the news etc. he is a political figure himself. Like, literally, he gets divorced because he abuses the FMC. How exactly is HE dragging her name down? Again, things don’t make sense. He gets his AP pregnant. He cheated. WHY is it soooo hard for her to get a divorce from him? There are some mentioned about him making it hard and asking for more money and stuff like that, but again WHERE is the super rich old money FMC that is SO smart etc etc?
Now, my other major problem was the chemistry. Telling me that the characters have chemistry ain’t working from me when I get both POVs and I still ain’t filling it. They start having a more or less a relationship around intimacy and then they start saying ILY. Like, how? You have interacted like 15 times so far in the book and 10 of them was just BAD, imo, intimacy that both MCs were trying to convince me that was GREAT AF. Well, good for them, I guess ?
Oh, and I won’t even mention the stupid plot with her ex. Like, she was abused. She got cheated on. He got another woman pregnant. He released a revenge video and she was feeling OH SO HELPLESS while she is an attorney. Like..come on now, people…
Tropes: age gap, dad’s best friend, forbidden romance. Triggers: DV (not with the main couple), cheating (not the main couple), revenge sex tape leak (not the main couple), parent death (cancer), and infertility.
Instantly hooked me! This story was so addictive and I couldn’t get enough.
I absolutely loved the storyline. It was complex and multilayered which had me in a chokehold. This was a story about right guy wrong time, heartbreak, and a family learning to come together after such a great loss. But most importantly, this is a story about a woman picking up the pieces of her life and a man who helped her learn to love herself again.
The characters all had so much depth. It was easy to connect with them and fall in love.
Cal, specifically, was perfection. A man willing to do the dishes? Raw, next question.
Besides his unwillingness to conform to standardized gender roles, this man went out of his way to show Daphne her self worth and never once tried to steal her shine. And he made it all look so effortless! Cal is a king!
Now, poor Daphne was really going through it the entire book but I still loved her. It was incredibly easy to see why Cal felt the same. Despite life constantly taking Daphne out at the knees, she never once sounded like a whiny baby over it. She took it all square on the chin and reacted exactly how I would expect someone to IRL. Yes, she would cry at times and would have to take a step back to protect her peace, but she didn’t make everyone else miserable around her in the process. Nor did she throw pity parties and try to make everyone feel sorry for her. I absolutely loved that about her.
The supporting characters were equally full of depth. I won’t say they are all likable, but I definitely appreciated how even the smallest of characters had so much personality. It really brought the story to life.
The spice was spot on. There is nothing sexier than a man who understands consent and boundaries and boy does Cal get it! If Daphne was uncomfortable with something that was enough for him to take a step back. I also loved how he took the time to gain Daphne’s trust before pushing her to go further in the bedroom. Every intimate interaction between them was whatever Daphne was comfortable with and he never once complained or asked for more. Again, Cal is a King!
Despite my obvious obsession with this book, the ending did fall a bit flat for me. Children seemed to be a major component in the story whether it be fertility issues, a surprise pregnancy (not the MCs), or exes with babies needing a sitter. Not to mention the conversations about having kids between the main couple…. So tell me why they never had a baby??? Like, not even in the epilogue. I was so disappointed that the story presented every neon sign pointing in that direction and it didn’t even happen.
Also, I just flat out needed more. It really seemed like all of a sudden the characters were just like, “okay, we can be happy now” and went on about their day. NO! After everything these two went through, I desperately needed to really see them be happy together. Yes, this did end with an HEA and we get a crumb of their future, but I didn’t want to settle for a crumb! I wanted the whole damn cookie!
Knowing me, I am totally blowing it out of proportion, but at the end of the day, I’m just a girl who gets attached to fictional characters. I’m not sorry about that.
With all of that said, I really loved this book. I adored the characters so much, I don’t think I could ever get enough of them. If this got turned into a series where we followed the characters mundane lives all the way to the end, I would devour it and probably still demand for more.
I definitely recommend this book to anyone looking for a deeply relatable story with so much depth you could drown in it. Especially if you are someone who loves a fictional man who fully understands consent. Cal is your guy!
Despite my rave of this book and my definite recommendation, I still advise everyone to read the triggers before jumping in and avoid reading if it may disturb your peace.
This was my first book by this author, and it won't be my last! Daphne Dalphine is such a strong fmc, and I loved how bossy and straight up she was. Being a woman in a man's field is tough, and she showed us readers that she has a spine of steel. I loved how outspoken she was, and even though she was a nepo baby, she worked just as hard as everyone else (maybe except her brother, haha.) I liked reading about a fmc that wasn't ready for kids at that time. She loved working, and I really appreciated having this aspect in the book, as many female readers are also in the same boat. She constantly had to prove her worth and fight her own battles in the present (time of the book), yet not once did she make excuses, and not once did she give up, and I LOVED her for that. Women work so hard to prove themselves in the workplace, especially in a man's field. We don't gett to cry in public, we save that for on our own. We don't get to throw a pity party, we put our heads down and we work. I loved seeing this kind of representation.
Cal Markham, Daphne's father's best friend and a billionaire mayor, he STAYS winning. I loved how work-driven and passionate both characters were, but I also loved how Cal always wanted Daphne to shine. A billionaire, mayor who does the dishes......SIGN ME UP! Cal was very supportive of Daphne and through everything that happened, he was there when she was picking up the pieces of her life that literally blew up, and he was there to help remind her how important it is to love yourself.

This was my first time reading a book by this author, and it definitely will not be the last. I really enjoyed everything about this. I love a good age gap, billionaire romance and this one was great. Honestly, I felt the ex husband should have gotten more karma than he did. Loved the family dynamics of both main characters. Definitely recommend!
I loveddd this book. I appreciated it for what it as and was expecting a fun time where I was entertained for most of it. Safe to say that was not this book. I was ADDICTED. I have exams I'm supposed to be revising for and instead I could not put down this book. I had a fantastic time and was disappointed when I finished this book way too soon. I can't wait to pick up another book by this author.
I'm a big fan of age gap and billionaire romances, so I jumped at the chance to read this one. I'll be honest, I struggled a bit with this book. Don't get me wrong, I read it in 2 days because I was intrigued with the plot, but the writing style just felt 'off' to me. In Part 1, I found myself going back to make sure I didn't miss a whole page of reading since the topic would change in a conversation without warning or any sort of logical transition. I mean, I'm known to switch topics in a conversation since I have ADHD, but this wasn't the same. It was like two different plots were being written in the same pages, so it was extremely hard to follow (and I see I'm not alone in that). The writing did improve after Part 1 though, so keep going.
Also, the dialogue itself was a bit odd given Daphne was 20-something in the beginning and then was still in her 30s the last 3/4 of the book. Who in modern age says 'cannot' every time and not 'can't' in casual convos?I have to assume that since her mom was a 'Lady' from England that she was simply raised on 'proper English' that you'd come to expect if you were listening to rich English aristocrats speak. It made her seem pretentious, in my opinion and not someone relatable. Her siblings seem to converse like normal modern day Americans under 50, so she was the only anomaly with her hate for contractions and her need to use words that are not part of everyday vocabulary (I think she used 'infantile' 3x in one part).
I really liked Cal. He was older and her father's best friend. But he wasn't so old that to me their relationship seemed odd. I liked that he was always trying to build her up when others tore her down, including her abusive ex. What I didn't like was how he chose to ignore or keep her as a dirty secret for so long. I'm not a fan of politics and don't typically read books that have politicians for this very reason. There's just so much fakeness that they have to portray in public in order to be seen as likable and it lessens their authenticity.
Daphne came off as a strong and independent woman in the beginning. Then she married a douche and he really did a number on her confidence. She did a total 180 after Part 1 in this book and became meek. I'm glad she found herself again (through the help of Cal) and learned to defend herself. This book had some tough moments in it that broke my heart, that's for sure. I admire her courage to stand up for what was right and not let a bully take her down.
The ending was cute, but I would have liked to have seen an epilogue that was further into the future. They go from secretly dating for a short time to only being out in public for a short while before he proposes. And the book ends with that. I feel like I needed more to truly believe in their HEA.
While this book wasn't for me, for those who love political romances, you'll likely enjoy this one. Be sure to check out the trigger warnings though since there are some not so pleasant parts included.
Tropes: age gap, dad’s best friend, workplace tension, forbidden romance Content warnings: domestic abuse (not involving the main couple), infertility, parental death, cheating (side characters), emotionally manipulative exes
From the very beginning, this book had me hooked. There’s something about the “forbidden but magnetic” vibe between two adults who know they shouldn’t cross that line, and yet... here we are, falling right along with them.
This story isn't just about a taboo connection — it's about two people dealing with grief, trauma, and self-worth in very different ways. The emotional weight was real, and I appreciated how Maude Winters didn’t shy away from tough topics. It felt raw, honest, and unfiltered.
Cal? Total dream. The kind of man who not only listens, but hears you. He gave Daphne space when she needed it, showed up when it mattered most, and never once tried to control or “fix” her. The way he handled intimacy and consent? Effortless and respectful. That should be the bare minimum, but damn did it make him stand out.
Daphne, on the other hand, went through it — and yet never lost her voice. She was tired, hurt, and guarded, but still kept pushing forward. Her journey felt very real to me. She didn’t need saving — she needed someone who saw her fully. And Cal did that.
The emotional tension between them was intense, but balanced by quiet, tender moments. I loved how they supported each other without codependency, how the heat never overtook the heart of the story.
My only issue? The ending wrapped up too neatly for me. After everything they endured, I wanted a bit more time basking in their happiness — just one more chapter, one more glimpse into their future. It was a satisfying HEA, but I would've devoured a longer one.
Still, I adored this book. It gave me all the feels — longing, heartbreak, healing, and so much tenderness. If you're a fan of forbidden romance done right, this one definitely delivers.
Would I read more about these characters? Absolutely. I’d follow them into a boring, everyday domestic sequel in a heartbeat.
Highly recommend if you're looking for a romance that digs deep, respects its characters, and makes you believe in the slow rebuilding of trust and love.
Maude Winters is switching gears from European Royalty to American Royalty in her new Lakeshore Empire series. Executive Decision is an addictive blend of corporate intrigue, sizzling romance, and whip-smart dialogue that kept me turning pages as fast as I could.
The Delphine family is considered as elite as a family can get in the United States. They rule the retail industry from their flagship store in Chicago with custom shopping experiences. David Delphine Sr leads the company, with his determined daughter Daphne poised to ensure its future success.
Executive Decision unfolds over eleven years in four parts. It starts with twenty-four-year-old Daphne, who is heartbroken from a breakup with her British boyfriend. She unexpectedly enjoys working with her father’s friend, Cal Markham, who is thirteen years her senior. During a wedding trip to Hawaii, their connection intensifies despite the age gap.
The chemistry between the Cal and Daphne crackles from the first page they appear together on, but what really impressed me was how fully realized both characters were outside of their romantic entanglement. Daphne is motivated, intelligent, and has her imperfections, while Cal exhibits authority without resorting to stereotypes. Their power dynamics evolve in believable and satisfying ways, lending the romance genuine emotional weight.
Winters presents a narrative that is both emotionally resonant and highly engaging, achieving a rare balance in contemporary romance. Highly recommended for readers who love their romance with brains, bite, and just the right amount of heat.
I received Executive Decision for free. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
I honestly don’t know how I got on this list to read this book but I’m exceptionally happy that I am. I suspect it was the ‘Chicago family retail’ part of the blurb along with ‘Political Intrigue and age gap’ thing that caught my attention either on TT or IG at some point.
So, I am a Chicago girly and Daphne’s family feels like if the Pritzker Family and Marshall Field’s family had babies - her family would be the outcome. Even the department store descriptions is the freaking Marshall Field’s State Street store…. And you can’t tell me otherwise.
Anyways - this book plays with your heart strings, makes you sit with uncomfortable moments and themes that you should indeed read the content expectations before you read. The FMC goes through a lot. I would not be able to handle what she does and that makes her a freakin’ goddess in my mind.
Cal, seems lost at the beginning… the ‘I checked all my professional boxes and I still feel meh’ type but he was raised by a mother who built her own empire so he knows how to treat his princess…even when she tried to push him away. He finds fulfillment when he finally allows himself the freedom to what is forbidden (he is the father’s best friend).
I enjoyed this and I need the next Lakeshore book… like ASAP so I can gaslight myself into thinking my favorite department store still exists for a few hours… even if it isn’t mentioned much.

This was my first time reading Maude Winters and I really enjoyed it.
I am a sucker for some of the tropes in this book - age gap, forbidden romance, workplace tension and add dad's best friend into the mix. I was racing to read this.
There is so much more to this story than just a taboo romance. Cal and Daphne deal with so much from grief, trauma, cheating and self-worth to name a few. It was an emotional journey. I love how Maude didn't shy away from the tough topics and they were dealt with so well.
Cal - the man that he is - is everything Daphne needs. He not only listens to her, but he hears her. He showed up when she needed him most, but also gave her space when she asked for it. He cared so much for her and respected her like no one else has before.
Daphne. This girl needs a hug. She went through it all. She was so tough and came out the other side no matter what was thrown her way. She never lost sight of who she was and what she wanted.
Although it took me a while to get into this book, by the end I wanted more. I would have liked to see more of their happiness together - just another chapter - as Cal and Daphne came so far and as soon as they were no longer being secretive with their relationship, we got the epilogue.
Overall, loved it and look forward to reading more of Maude's work in the future.
- Father's Best Friend - Age Gap - Forbidden Romance - Second Chance - Workplace - Billionaire Romance - Scandals
This story delivers a swoon-worthy blend of forbidden love, political intrigue, and emotional healing. Daphne is a powerhouse of a heroine—ambitious, sharp, and determined to make a name for herself despite being entangled in a life that’s slowly breaking her spirit. Watching her reclaim her strength is both heartbreaking and inspiring.
Enter Cal: her father’s best friend, a billionaire with secrets of his own, and the man she never truly got over. Their chemistry is undeniable, intense, and absolutely electric. What starts as a one-night memory turns into a second chance neither of them expected—and probably shouldn’t take. But love doesn’t care about rules or reputations.
Expect scandal, dynasty drama, and a romance that burns slow but fierce. It’s got all the tropes we love: Age gap, Father’s best friend, Billionaire romance, Second chance, Forbidden love, Political intrigue, Family dynasty drama, and that one-night stand that meant everything.
This book pulls you in with emotion, sass, and just enough spice to make you blush. I laughed, I teared up, and I rooted so hard for Daphne to get the love and power she deserves. Add this to your TBR for May 23rd—it’s the kind of story that lingers after the last page.
Perseverance... I loved Calvin aka Cal in this story, he is such a wonderful, sweet man, a true gentleman, lacking a bit of self-worth until he finds his voice. Daphne is a smart young vivacious woman with huge dreams, but not all dreams are easy to reach. Cal and Daph lives become so interconnected from the moment she starts working at her father’s company, their decade difference may be a deterrent, but true love always rules out even when world apart and if it takes 6 years of trials and tribulations. Daphnes’ life is turned upside down when family, society and self-doubt push her into a future she didn’t see coming. Trigger warning…This story touches on a lot of difficult topics like social etiquette pressure, manipulation, repercussions of choices made, influence, blackmail, society and family scrutiny, as well as cyber defamation of character. The worst trigger… physical and psychological abuse. It’s a good story, especially if you’re into politics, intrigue, elite society, secrets and domination. DNC Mayor Cal and heiress Daphne’s journey is not an easy one but by the end it teaches us to be true to our own feelings, love oneself above all and fight for what you want. I voluntarily reviewed this after receiving ARC
Executive Decision by Maude Winters is a bold and captivating romance that blends high-stakes passion with an engaging, character-driven narrative. While the genre is rich with similar storylines, Winters distinguishes her novel through a distinctive voice, well-developed characters, and a plot that offers more than just heat—it delivers genuine emotional investment.
From the first chapter, the chemistry between the leads is electric, making the novel undeniably “spicy,” yet the sensuality never overshadows the depth of the story itself. Winters strikes a compelling balance between romance and plot, ensuring that the emotional stakes remain as high as the physical ones. The pacing is brisk, making it easy to get swept up in the tension, both romantic and otherwise, and difficult to put down once the story is underway.
What truly sets Executive Decision apart is its originality within a familiar framework. The narrative introduces unexpected elements and fresh dynamics that make it stand out in a crowded genre. With its compelling storyline and addictive energy, this book not only satisfies but also leaves readers eager for the next installment. It’s a promising start to a series that clearly has more to offer.
Executive Decision" dives headfirst into the high-stakes world of Chicago's elite, proving that sometimes, the biggest gamble isn't in business, but in matters of the heart. When Daphne Delphine comes back home, she's got a lot on her plate: a family empire on shaky ground, a marriage that's gone south, and the undeniable pull of a man who's completely off-limits. Cal Markham, the city's mayor and her late father's best friend, is the only one who can truly help her, setting up a dynamic that's just begging for trouble. Their shared past lights up a fire that's hard to ignore, and as they navigate the treacherous waters of power and privilege, you're left wondering if love can really conquer all. The story really digs into the complex6ities of their lives, showing how their individual battles for control and political survival intertwine with their burgeoning feelings. It's a compelling ride as Daphne fights for her family's legacy and Cal grapples with his public image, all while an old scandal threatens to blow everything sky-high. This book is for anyone who loves a good drama where the stakes are always high, both in the boardroom and the bedroom. It’s a page-turner that keeps you guessing about who will come out on top and what sacrifices they’ll make along the way.
Daphne Delphine is returned to Chicago after a disastrous marriage and the death of her larger than life father. Her family’s business is failing and she wants to try to restart her life with a more central role in the company. She also is desperately trying to keep herself distant from her former one night stand and current Mayer, Cal Markham. Unfortunately, Daphne’s ex husband has a mean streak and her family is fractured. Can she pull her life together and help save the family business?
I loved so much about this new series but the best parts are the characters. This is definitely a character driven story and both Call and Daphne have a lot of baggage they have to dig through to make this thing work. Call is her dad’s best friend and now a very public figure, on top of that she just spent years as the wife of a very public figure and it did not go, or end well. Daphne is also at odds with her brother over who should run the company and how and if that wasn’t enough drama, throw in her really horrible ex and her estranged relationship with her mother. Call is the ultimate supportive MMC. He has a lot of issues and life is pulling him in a lot of different directions but what he knows for certain is that he doesn’t want to miss another opportunity to have Daphne in his life. This book starts in the past and time jumps about 6 ish years and what a difference 6 years makes…. I enjoyed this book and I can’ wait to see what happens next with the Delphne’s. High Drama with just the right amount of spice. Great read.
Executive Decision had a plot that kept me interested, and I really appreciated Daphne’s journey — the way she lost herself and slowly found her footing again was compelling. I also enjoyed the age gap dynamic between her and Cal. That trope worked well here, and I liked how Cal was always trying to lift her up.
But overall, the writing style just didn’t work for me. The dialogue felt too formal, and the characters used each other’s names so much it started to feel unnatural and repetitive. While I was never bored, I did find myself struggling to stay connected at times because of how the story was written.
The political discussions were another downside for me. I read to escape real-world issues, and the politics pulled me out of the story. That’s more of a personal preference, though — the author is upfront about writing politically driven stories, so I can’t really fault her for that.
In the end, it wasn’t a great fit for me and I think it needs another round of editing due to grammatical errors, but I think readers who enjoy political themes and more structured dialogue might get more out of it.
This was my second read from this author. Thank you, Maude, for this ARC in exchange for my review.
Daphne is an intelligent woman belonging to a wealthy family of Chicago. She is business savvy and wants to make a name for herself. Her character is strong in the beginning but then takes a turn after marrying an abusive asshole. Cal is Daphne’s father’s best friend and business associate. He roots for Daphne when everyone else doesn’t (including herself). He helps build her confidence back up. Their relationship starts off as a secret and then becomes public at an inopportune time. Ultimately, Daphne and Cal get the HEA that they both deserve.
The dialogue was hard to follow on this one. The conversations shifted without warning and the wording was just off for me. I often felt confused and as if I had missed a key part of the story, but would reread previous pages and not find the information there.
Though this was a miss for me, keep doing your thing, Maude! You have the wonderful ability to give women strong personalities and voices.
"Executive Decision" by Maude Winters is a solid, enjoyable read that strikes a nice balance between suspense and character development. I particularly liked how the MMC (Main Male Character) wasn’t your typical arrogant, broody corporate guy. As much as I usually enjoy the broody type, I appreciated the refreshing shift in his character—he was intelligent, driven, and not an asshole. It made for a more relatable, grounded dynamic between him and the other characters.
The book keeps a good pace and the plot holds your attention, but there was something about it that left me feeling a little like there was more to be desired. I’m not quite sure what was missing—maybe a bit more depth in the secondary characters or a more intense emotional payoff—but despite that, I still found it enjoyable.
All in all, it's a great read for anyone who enjoys a smart, fast-paced business thriller with strong, likable characters. It didn’t quite blow me away, but I definitely had fun with it and would still recommend it.
Tell me why I literally just ate this whole book up - one sitting, no breaks. I mean this book had me hooked on the tropes list alone:
Age gap Father’s best friend Billionaire romance Second chance Forbidden love Political intrigue Family dynasty drama One-night stand / past fling Scandal
It was a solid high-stakes mafia romance that had me staying up all night to finish it. It had emotional depth, and the characters had personality. I loved that the FMC was actually such a bad ass, which is hard to come by in a mafia setting. I also enjoyed that their dynamic was equal and came across as genuine. I would 100% recommend this book to friends - can't wait for the next installment!

5 ⭐️ 2🌶️ I devoured this book! It typically takes me a week to finish a book, I slammed this down within about 26 hours! What a way to start off a new series, and I can't wait for the others to follow! I love the in depth back story we got on these two and I really feel it was needed with how much went into this story; a simple prologue would not have been enough.
Daphne is such a strong woman coming out of a very toxic and abusive relationship while dealing with the death of her father and his legacy potentially going under. She had a lot on her plate and the way Cal supported her and always made her feel worthy and loved was so heartwarming. I love these two together so much! I can't wait for her brother Davey's story!
Executive Decision by Maude Winters is the first book in the Lakeshore Empire Series. This is a billionaire romance and isn’t considered to be a dark romance but there are some triggering events so please read the trigger warning.
Daphne Delphine, our FMC, is an educated, hard working, daddy’s girl, boss. This story is told in a span of a decade, so you get to see her character development and how she goes from being a naive young woman to a broken wife and finally to a boss who knows what she wants. She sets boundaries and learns to use her voice. She has horrible events happen to her but no matter how broke she feels, Cal sees past all of that and only sees her strength and her beauty.
Cal Markham, our MMC, he’s Daphne’s dad’s best friend, business partner and confidant. He loves hard and although he falls for Daphne early on he knows he can’t have her. He is loyal to a fault and years after his amazing Hawaii trip with Daphne he is now the Mayor and the most eligible bachelor that everyone in the room turns their head to look at. But he only has eyes for one woman in the room and she is single again.
I enjoyed this book, the character development everyone had was appreciated because not only was it for the main characters but the side characters also. The Delphine daughters made me laugh several times, they stick together no matter what and i loved that. This is a HEA, thankfully because after what Daphne goes through, that’s all you can wish for her to have. The chemistry that she and Cal have is so strong. I can’t wait to see how the rest of this series unfolds.
I received this as an ARC and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Cal and Daphne are incredible! Cal makes sure the he has 100% consent in everything they do and makes sure she gets the most amount of pleasure she can. He is there to help her even when they arent together and to be a rock for her. He always tries to do what's best for her even if it potential means sacrificing his future career. While he knows it's wrong to go after his best friends daughter he can't help it. And Im so glad he can't. The ups and downs of this book had me LITERALLY dropping my phone at my work station and walking away just to return within seconds to start reading again. I devoured this book and absolutely love Cal and Daphne's story and seeing them grow and find each other years after a one off weekend.
I loved Executive Decisions so much that I devoured it in two days. It is the first book by Maude Winters that I read and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I liked Cal and Daphne a lot. It was refreshing to read about mature adults in their thirties and forties dealing with issues like a terrible divorce process, abusive ex-husbands, fertility problems, sibling rivalry, parent-children relationship. Daphne is a strong and ambitious woman, who wants to prove her worth to her siblings and parents. Cal is confident, compassionate, protective, caring and ambitious. His devotion to Daphne is moving and heart-warming. I loved their journey to love that had many obstacles and kept me in suspense. The book is spicy and romantic, emotional and exciting. It was a wonderful and engaging read!
Executive Decision is a sizzling, emotionally rich forbidden romance that completely hooked me! Daphne and Cal’s chemistry is undeniable—complicated, intense, and full of longing. The age gap and their shared past make every stolen moment between them even more electric.
Daphne is a strong, relatable heroine navigating grief, family drama, and high expectations, while Cal is the perfect mix of powerful and tender. Their connection feels both inevitable and off-limits, which makes it all the more gripping.
Maude Winters weaves in just the right amount of political intrigue and emotional depth to keep the pages turning. The tension, the stakes, and the heart? All there. I loved it—and that ending has me dying for book 2! A compelling, steamy start to the series.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for providing an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
As much as I wanted to stay immersed, the writing didn’t quite hold me. The dialogue often felt like a dress rehearsal for a courtroom drama — overly polished, oddly formal, and heavy on the name-dropping.
The political content also pulled me out. Not because it wasn’t well-intentioned — it clearly was — but because I personally read fiction to slip out of the headlines, not back into them. That said, the author doesn’t hide her agenda, so fair play there.
While it wasn’t a match for my tastes, readers who enjoy structured prose and characters who speak like they’re always five minutes away from a press conference might find it a better fit.
Thank you to the publisher/author for the opportunity to read this book as an ARC! I feel this book had a lot of potential but it sort of fell flat for me. Daphne seemed like she was supposed to be this well fleshed out character but I just couldn’t connect with her. The abuse seemed slightly out of place and a bit more nonchalant in the grand scheme of things. The storyline was sometimes difficult to follow because of the time jumps. This may be what made it difficult to connect to the story for me. This does have a bunch of loved tropes like father’s best friend and age gap romance. While the romance and spice was good, the overall story just wasn’t for me.
