Hate Hex

Rate this book
Trixie Gardens is one average witch, thank you very much.

A down-on-her luck taxi driver in the paranormal section of New York, Trixie has spent a lifetime repressing her magic. Until one night, she meets a grumpy, devilishly handsome vampire in a dark alley, and she accidentally activates her powers by shooting the cork from a cheap cabernet bottle at his face.

It turns out the vampire is none other than Dominic Kent—the stormy, rough-around-the-edges billionaire who owns Trixie’s apartment building. When she discovers Dominic is trying to kick her out of the only place she’s ever called home (and did she mention rent-controlled?), it’s hate at first sight.

After Trixie puts a teeny, tiny hex on her new nemesis, Dom retaliates in a big way. It’s all clever enchantments and witty curses, until Dominic’s brother suddenly returns, hellbent on revenge. When things turn deadly, Dominic and Trixie must bond together to survive.

As Dom and Trixie fight to stay alive, they try to ignore the electricity crackling between them that’s got nothing to do with magic. However, before she knows it, Trixie finds herself wondering why the line between hate and love feels like it’s so thin it might have vanished entirely…

Hate Hex by Gina LaManna is a fast-paced paranormal romance with magical elements. The story follows Trixie, a witch who suppresses her magic, and Dominic, a vampire, as the main characters. Their intense relationship gives the book a Vampire Diaries vibe, with its mix of supernatural elements and simmering tension.

One of the strengths of Hate Hex is its pace. The story moves quickly, making it a simple, fun read that’s easy to binge in one sitting. I also appreciated the dual POV, which provided insight into both Trixie and Dominic’s perspectives, adding depth to the story.

However, despite the entertaining premise, this book wasn’t entirely for me. I struggled to connect with the characters, finding them somewhat annoying and immature at times. The world-building, especially when it came to the political aspects of the witch and vampire worlds, felt underdeveloped. With more attention to this aspect, I believe the story could have been more interesting and engaging.

Overall, Hate Hex is a light, enjoyable read with paranormal and witchy elements that is perfect if you’re looking for a quick read.

I would like to thank NetGalley, LaManna Books and the author for providing me with an eArc of this book in exchange for an honest review. <3

Unfortunately, this book was not for me. I couldn't connect with the characters at all. Trixie, I found to be woe me type of way. She has suppressed her magic for so long, and as the reader, the reason why is not shared for a while, especially the pivotal moments between a reader and the character. I wanted to understand her better and could only assume. Likewise, I couldn't buy into the stories as well. At least it was a quick read.

The redemping aspect for me was Trixie's roommate Emmy. She was a really good friend to her and seemed to give her the best advice.

A typical enemies to lovers trope with paranormal twist with the FMC being a witch and the MMC being a vampire.

Thank you to NetGalley for an ARC of Gina LaManna’s book and giving me the opportunity to read this and share my honest review.

If you're searching for a simple, quick, fun romcom this should be your cup of tea! The romance was pretty cute (even though it's insta-love) and the characters were lovable. I usually dislike multiple POVs in romance books but here it worked well towards making the story feel complete.

*3 HEXED STARS*

“There’s only one pain as great as losing someone who you deeply love, and that’s the pain of never giving it a chance.”

This was a very cute, pretty lighthearted and fast read, perfect for the autumn season and what I was in the mood for. Full of witches, vampires and other supernatural beings. There was some humor, a very vanilla romance and a light dash of suspense.

Overall, a cute read, but nothing overly special or anything to write home about. The ending was a little rushed and pretty predictable, and I'm still left with some unanswered questions. (What happened to Dom's brother in the end?)

I got an advance reader copy of Hate Hex through NetGalley, and I absolutely binged it. I would rate this book a 4.5/5 stars. I am manifesting a second book about Dom and Trixie as they continue to dive into their futures. The main character and her roommate had hilarious and fun interactions. The romantic tension between the two main characters also kept me turning the pages. If you’re looking for a great rom-com, I definitely recommend this one.

A fun, quick, paranormal, witchy read. The storyline is engaging, with a strong emphasis on magic and romance. The side plot about politics did feel underdeveloped but not hard to follow. However, the FMCs point of view can be somewhat challenging to read from. Her reluctance to embrace magic isn't fully explained until halfway through the book, which might leave readers puzzled for a significant portion of the story. Once her reasoning is revealed, it does add depth to her character, but the wait feels a bit prolonged.

One notable aspect that might divide readers is the off-screen first kiss. For a romance novel, this choice can be a bit jarring, as it skips a big moment for establishing the chemistry between the main characters. The relationship development seems somewhat rushed overall and they go from acquaintances to being in love without much build-up.

Despite these points, the book remains an enjoyable read. It's perfect for anyone seeking a light, entertaining paranormal story that doesn't require a heavy investment of time. I appreciate NetGalley and Lamanna Books for the ARC!

Okay so Hate Hex? It was just... meh for me. Like it wasn’t terrible, but not great either. You know when you read something and it just feels hollow? That was this book for me. The characters? Couldn't connect with them if my life depended on it. And Trixie - oh boy. She was one of those characters that just makes you want to reach through the pages and shake some sense into them. Like, girl, please get it together!

Trixie is this witch who's basically as basic as they come. She's driving a taxi in New York's paranormal district (because of course that's a thing), and she's spent forever trying to pretend her magic doesn't exist. Then one night, she has this run-in with this broody vampire in some dark alley, and what does she do? Accidentally shoots a wine cork at his face with her magic. Real smooth, right?

Plot twist - turns out Mr. Tall, Dark, and Vampy is Dominic Kent, this loaded billionaire who - surprise! - owns her building. And because life loves drama, he's trying to kick her out of her rent-controlled apartment (the horror!).

Cue the instant hate-fest.

So Trixie's brilliant solution? Throw a "tiny" hex his way. Dom hits back harder, and they get into this whole magical prank war. But then Dom's brother shows up with some serious revenge vibes, and suddenly our bickering duo has to team up or die trying.

And naturally, because this is a romance novel, they're fighting this whole electric attraction thing while trying not to get killed. Classic enemies-to-lovers stuff.

If you're in the mood for something super light and fluffy - like, cotton candy level of substance - maybe give it a shot. But don't expect anything mind-blowing. It's more of a "I don't want to think too hard" kind of read.

Trixie Gardens, is a down-on-her-luck taxi driver in the paranormal section of New York. She is also a witch who has refused to use her powers since she was sixteen, and they have been building up inside of her ever since. Then one night, as she is walking back to her apartment, she runs into a grumpy, devilishly handsome vampire in the alley behind her apartment building and her magic accidentally shoots the cork from a cheap cabernet bottle at his face. Oops! The vampire turns out to be none other than Dominic Kent, the billionaire who owns Trixie’s apartment building and lives in the penthouse above her apartment. When she discovers Dominic is planning to sell the apartment building and evict everyone, she retaliates by getting her roommate/best friend to brew up a hate hex to show him just how miserable it can be to live in a crappy apartment, which is all she will be able to afford if she gets kicked out of her rent-controlled one. He retaliates by hexing her back, and it is game on. When Dominic's brother returns, hellbent on revenge, Dom & Trixie have to join forces to stay alive.

I am a huge fan of this author, and her Magic & Mixology series is my favorite of all of them. This book is in the same universe as those books, even if there weren't any cross-over characters. I loved Trixie & Dominic and Trixie's roommate Emmy, and hope this will be either a spin-off series, or they will be incorporated into future books in that series. This was a fun read that is perfect for anyone who loves fantasy fiction.. I highly recommend it.

Hate Hex is a quick & fun paranormal romance perfect for getting you into the spooky season mood. I enjoyed the hate to love romance between the witch Trixie & the vampire Dom, and all of their banter and hexing pranks. Since it’s on the shorter side, the romance happens a bit quickly, but the author at least provides a reasonable explanation for it.

There are a couple major plots going on - a political election in which Trixie and Dom are both (unwilling) candidates, as well as the threat of Dom’s unhinged brother Sebastian. I feel like these could have been focused on more rather than randomly becoming an issue every so often. Overall the resolutions were just okay, but I still thought it was a cute read and I enjoyed the romance.

Thank you to LaManna books for the ARC!

I really enjoyed this book. It is such a fast read and I absolutely love Gran. Sometimes side characters just steal the show for me lol!

It’s a paranormal romance, kind of in line with Bride by Ali Hazelwood but with a lot more comedic romance. I recommend you to give it a try!!

Trixie is a witch who is trying to repress her powers and Dominic is a vampire that is drawn to her eventhough everything around them is getting complicated. Dominic is the new owner of Trixie's apartment complex and is kicking her out of her home, but not only that, she is now in the running for a position she doesn't want and can't seem to stop thinking about Dominic and runs into him everywhere.
Dominic knows he shouldn't want a witch, but for some reason he can't stop the feeling that she is meant to be with him. He knows she hates him, but he vows to keep her safe with all the crazy things that are going on around them.
I liked both of the MC of this book, but I just didn't feel connected to them in any ways. This was a fun light read, but it did jump around a bit and I felt like some story lines were left unfinished. If you are looking for a light, paranormal read for the spooky season, this is the perfect book. 3.5 stars.

Hate Hex is a fun, light hearted paranormal romance. We have Dom, the rich, handsome and protective vampire; and Trixie, the alcohol loving Uber driving witch. Throughout the book you can feel how playful their relationship is with their banter and back and forth hexing of one another. The side “quest” of Dom’s brother brought an element of mystery to the book that was a great, fun addition! The story has good conversations and is paced well for the length of the book.

This was a quick, fun, and quirky read! I really loved the banter and tension between Dom and Trixie. The romance felt a bit rushed; it went from enemies to lovers turned insta-love a little too quickly for me. I wish it had slowed down a bit so I could enjoy the hex pranks a bit more. Overall though, it was still an enjoyable read.

I LOVED this paranormal romance by a new to me author! It's an opposites attract, enemies to lovers romance between Dom, a billionaire vampire and Trixie, an NYC cab driver who has suppressed her powers and does not want to get dragged into an election for the wild card spot on the Circle of Supernaturals. Full of romance, adventure and suspense, this was a fun listen perfect for fans of authors like Erin Sterling and Ann Aguire!

Just finished reading an advanced copy of a book that was just released on September 1st called, Hate Hex. This was a cute, light-hearted, easy to read romcom that is perfect for spooky season! This was an enemies to lovers story with hilarious banter and undeniable chemistry between these paranormal characters. I am definitely hoping for a sequel because this couple (and the side characters) were fun, adorable, quirky, and I need their story to continue! I read this in less than a day, I just couldn't put it down. 💜📚

Okay being totally honest that it’s been a few weeks since I started this and I left it 90% done until today so I don’t super remember the beginning lol but I needed something to keep me awake while I drove to and from my parents house a few weeks ago so I purposely picked something lowkey stupid and this was perfect. The characters were all annoying to me and ummm idk what else to say… I obvi listened on audio but I’ll say it anyway okay bye

Cute romance but don’t tell me the plant loving witch is called Trixie Gardens and the domineering broody vampire is called Dom. Also don’t love that the love interest just swoops and solves all her problems with money. Like this is a world with magic and you’re still fixing problems with money????

I love a good paranormal romance. The premise of this book seemed fun. The plot is a bit underdeveloped though. For instance, they go from hexing each other, to loving very quickly. It is closed door BTW, for anyone looking for spice levels. The plot introduces family and others without full explanation until after the fact...similar to the FMC's refusal to use her powers. We don't find out why until later. I thought they had chemistry but there wasn't enough of a connection to say love. This book just was not well flushed out enough for me to be into it.

2.5, rounded down. This had the bones of a good book - which makes sense considering it was 250 pages and would have been much better at 350. But the pacing was terribly off. The beginning starts too quick, but quickly finds its footing. The next 25% is a fun (if enjoyably predictable) romance. But despite being so short most of the middle lags. The jump from we hate each other to we love each other is way too quick. Almost as quick as Trixie getting over all her angst and becoming a super charged witch over a single cup of coffee. The end was rushed and chaotic and the reason for the “win” was laughable nonsense. Had there been more pages there could have maybe been more prep, more foreshadowing, more something. I would be down to read a longer book from LaManna in the future, but this length was too awkward to tell the story she wanted to tell completely and believably.

I was laughing out loud when I read this. My hubs asked what I was reading, and I said, ‘Gina’. Because of course, I’m on a first name basis with an author I’ve never met. Ms. LaManna creates characters that feel real. I loved this book and recommend it to LaManna fans and all future fans.

This feels like I got the rough draft version of this story, before all of the nuance and details were added in.

Which is depressing because despite all of the following issues, this story had a lot of potential to be really cute. I do enjoy the world, and I wanted to learn more about it. The side characters are all charming. Both the FMC and MMC are interesting characters with interesting stories. The magic was interesting, the hexes were hilarious, the danger at the end was good (and I wanted to know more about what happened to Sebastian).

But instead of a fully realized story, I feel like I got someone's spiral notebook with a half-baked idea they dreamed up in a NyQuil induced fog 3 nights ago.

What follows are some of the issues I encountered:

1. Trixie's last name is GARDENS...and she likes plants. How...cute.

2. The author actually uses the word "un-alived" unironically. More than once. I swear to god, TikTok is a cancer to our society.

3. While I can appreciate the info-dump about Trixie's past that occurs halfway through this book, the fact that she's dumping to her GRANDMOTHER is weird. Surely Granny already knows what went down between her daughter and granddaughter???? Even if she wasn't allowed to meet Trixie until she was an adult, we find out that they have known each other at LEAST a decade. Why couldn't the author use this moment to bond the MMC and FMC together? To make Dominic understand why the apartment is SOOO important to Trixie?

4. Oh wait. WE DO. We get to hear Trixie's sob story TWICE because she insists on telling Granny first, before spilling to Dom the VERY NEXT DAY. This seems like poor editing, honestly. Why did nobody catch this? This book isn't even 300 pages long and we have to endure this backstory trauma-dump session TWICE.

5. The brother stalking Trixie makes no sense. Dom and Trixie have given nobody any reason to think they're even remotely friendly to one another, let alone that she's IMPORTANT to him. So how did he know to spook Dom with the dead woman as a warning? The plot of this book is so fucking flimsy.

5-a. Not to mention it takes 40% of the entire book to even GET to the brother's stalking part of things.

6. The way this woman jumps back and forth from "Dom's the worst I hate him he's ruining my life" to "I just don't know what it is about him he gets me all hot and bothered in my pants he's so beautiful" gives me whiplash. There's zero character development or plot progression on this front because she's so GD wishy-washy throughout the ENTIRE story.

7. If Dom hates his brother and the apartment they share ownership of so much why is he living there? If he's rich enough to live anywhere why live in the one place he's trying to get rid of?

8. It feels like there's entirely too many plotlines going on in this too-short book. The fact that they've both won bids for this wildcard leadership position. The murderous brother on the loose, the hate-hex war, the selling of the apartment, her repressed magic... there's too many logs in the fire here and because of that none of them are getting proper attention.

9. Uh. How is the announcement that they're in love and together supposed to keep things on the down-low so Trixie doesn't get targeted by Dom's brother? This book makes literally no sense.

10. So. Levian, the shoe-in candidate, hunted down a vampire that NO ONE ELSE could find, to make a sinister deal with him, to take out his political competition-who-doesn't-even-want-to-be-there, because he was afraid of losing the race Trixie wasn't even competing to win? Of all the ridiculous things....

11. We never get to find out what happens with Sebastian. Just that he's being "studied". Borrrriiiinngggg.

12. Dom proposes after just 2 months. 2 MONTHS. He can't convince the woman to move into his penthouse apartment with him but she accepts a proposal of MARRIAGE right away? Weird.

Y'all, I'm sorry. Everything's so surface level and being held together by spit and dental floss that I can't, in good conscience, give this a higher rating. 2.5 rounded down.

I LOVED THIS BOOK. It’s cute, it’s funny, it’s unique. I thoroughly enjoyed every second of this story.

I’m not going to give a recap of the storyline, because you can search that online. However, I will tell you all the things I loved about it.

The FMC, Trixie, is nearly 30 and a mess. Holla at all the near-and-or-around 30 year old millennial messes out there. She’s with us. Her whole “I’m so sad and I repress my magic thing could have been incredibly annoying, but the author handles it super well. Trixie’s growth moves along at a wonderful pace, where you can recognize her struggles and trauma, without it becoming maudlin and overcoming the entire story.

Speaking of pacing, this book is exceptionally well paced. It doesn’t rush, but it’s not incredibly drawn out. It moves along at the exact pace you need it to. Slight slow burn, but with an oddly human infusion. That rush of dating someone at first and getting to know them - this witch and vamp are totally, geekily human about it.

We love Dom. Love him, ok? He’s like the grown up billionaire Eddie Cullen we millennials need in our aging days. The banter between Trixie and Dom (it’s not a spoiler, ok, we know it’s going to happen!) is perfect. It’s fun & light, even when things aren’t all that fun & light.

You know who else we love? Grandma Betty. She’s a baddie and I am not taking criticism on this.

This is borderline cozy fantasy. The drama is dramatic, but it’s paced so well and couched so well, that you don’t have the heart-attack inducing anxiety from a massive fantasy. It’s like cozy fantasy meets witchy New York.

It’s so, so good!

Hate Hex was a fun, lighthearted paranormal romance with lots of laughs! Trixie and Dom’s prank-filled, push-pull relationship was packed with witty banter and playful hexes, making for a great “enemies-to-lovers” dynamic. Dom, the rich, protective vampire, and Trixie, the Uber-driving, plant-loving witch, are a perfect opposites-attract match. The world-building was done well, and I felt transported into the supernatural world that was created.

The story also dives into Trixie’s past, which helped explain why she’s so hesitant about using her powers. Her connection to her apartment was touching, and her backstory added some depth to her character.

While Dom’s side quest involving his brother added a bit of mystery, it wasn’t super compelling. The plot isn’t particularly deep, but that’s not really the point here—it’s all about the fun, flirty tension and the classic opposites-attract romance. And I have to say, the “constant excitement” hex from Grandma Betty was hilarious!

Overall, Hate Hex is a solid read if you’re in the mood for a paranormal romance that doesn’t take itself too seriously. It’s light, humorous, and paranormal read.

This was the first book I read by the author, it was quite light to the point of lukewarm. I think that the plot wanted more building and the description of the book refers you to a more dynamic story. It tells us that the protagonists join forces against Dom's brother and that they fight to stay alive and with their alliance they discover attraction. with this description I imagined that I would see a fight for survival, Trixie and Dom chasing his brother and somewhere in the middle hate evolves into attraction and then love. I didn't see any of that, i was never convinced in the book that Dom really hated Trixie and no matter how much the author tried to justify how quickly they fell in love, she didn't convinced me about that either. There were characters in the book without depth who were simply in the story to serve some scene in the book and to somehow continue the story, I think one of those characters was Trixie's grandmother .

This was going to be 4 stars up until I hit the 75% mark. Then shit got weird.

Trixie and Dom were technically “enemies to lovers” because they got off on the wrong foot when they met, in addition to hexing each other. But once they decided they liked each other, it went from 0-100. Like insta-love to level 11. It just gave me the ick immediately. But up until that point, everything had been cute and fun and witchy.

Also when Sebastian “kills” Trixie and Dom sees her lying there, he starts spouting all this crap about how he’s never felt pain like this before in his 300+ years of life. Like, chill out buddy… you met her 3 weeks ago. Him proposing in the epilogue was the final straw. You’ve known her for 2.5 months. It’s too soon pal. And she spent the first several weeks hating your guts.

I normally enjoy all the fated-mates, touch-her-and-die type tropes, but the insta-love really ruined them for me in this book. If the first 3/4 of this book hadn’t been enjoyable, it probably would’ve received 2 stars.
