Sloan Johnson is a big city girl trapped in a country girl’s body. While she longs for the hustle and bustle of New York City or Las Vegas, she hasn’t yet figured out how to sit on the deck with her morning coffee, watching the deer and wild turkeys in the fields while surrounded by concrete and glass.

When she was three, her parents received their first call from the principal asking them to pick her up from school. Apparently, if you aren’t enrolled, you can’t attend classes, even in Kindergarten. The next week, she was in preschool and started plotting her first story soon after.

Later in life, her parents needed to do something to help their socially awkward, uncoordinated child come out of her shell and figured there was no better place than a bar on Wednesday nights. It’s a good thing they did because this is where she found her love of reading and writing. Who needs socialization when you can sit alone in your bedroom with a good book?

Now, Sloan is a tattooed, purple haired mom of two kids, one of which was a thank you present to her husband for letting her get a Staffordshire Terrier with more anxiety issues than Sloan has, which is saying something. She’s been kicked out of the PTA in two school districts and is no longer asked to help with fundraisers because she’s been known to lose herself in a good book and forget that she has somewhere to be.

This review doesn’t just contain spoilers it is one big SPOILER.

Do not read my review if you liked the book because I don't want to hurt anybody's feelings, but a few may find some things offending.
This is my opinion and it should not make others hate this book.

Dumbest story ever, with so many clichés you won’t even find a single sentence which was creative or original. The story’s main theme is Lea’s and Colby’s relationship and that’s it. It isn’t cute, hot nor anything which could make a good romance, it is cheesy, boring, and predictable and I could go on and on until your ears start to bleed from all the bullshit.

Lea was this incredibly shy girl until she was introduced to Colby, a guy who is known and loved by everyone. He is of course every girls dream, and he kind of is a manwhore (at least this is what Lea thinks), typical, isn’t it?
We get to know that Colby feels the same way (jeez who thought?) but he would never ask out Lea because she deserves so much better (a “bit” cliché, don’t you think?). Colby sees that Lea is suffering because of his flirts but he thinks it’s better this way… what an ass, I mean do what you want but does he have to f*cking rub it into a girl’s face who is completely in love with him, and whom he loves too?

Then Lea gets drugged or something at a party and tells that she loves Colby, so they have to talk about this in the morning. When Lea wakes up and Colby is next to her, and she doesn’t have a lot of clothes on she thinks that they has sex and freaks out. Colby gets super hurt and when Lea’s best friend tells her that they didn’t do it, she apologizes and they talk thinks out with the help of a game they played in the past, it’s truth or dare (wow how original).

"With every question he asks, there’s more anguish in his deep voice. And I did that to him."

description

I can’t say anything to this one, I seriously can’t.

“Ask any of them,” he challenges without shifting his gaze. “They all know there’s someone else that I can’t hurt that way. The furthest I’ve gone with any of them is some heavy petting in my car.”

Oh god, what a gentleman. Is it just me who didn’t throw away her brain after this lovely sentence?

When they said like three truths and one dare the game ends which surprised me, because what is the title of the book? Truth or Dare… you’d think that it is important for the story… but hell no, the whole talking part could have happened without this ridiculous bullshit. The dare is Colby’s who has to take out Lea for her dream date, so it wasn’t even Colby’s idea to take her out… she had to ask for it… damn this just keeps getting more unromantic as the time goes.
The date was the most boring thing I’ve ever read, really the most.

“Is it too soon for me to tell you that I love you?” he asks during the bridge. I look into his amber eyes and see the depth of his words. The words won’t form around the lump in my throat, so I simply lift myself onto my toes, softly kissing each corner of his mouth.
“No, because I’ve been waiting over three years to tell you,” I admit when I can speak.

What the hell am I reading? This is neither sweet nor cute, this is worse than the cheesiest thing I’ve ever read.

So they get together and I thought: keep reading the end must be very romantic… but it wasn’t. It was a totally unhappy ending: Colby left Lea to make his dreams of becoming a singer come true so they had to start a long-distance relationship. To make matters worse this book is going to have more parts… I don’t get the writer, this is a short story, but if she didn’t have a cute ending why didn’t she write a complete novel and continue with the relationship of these two? Usually people don’t make series out of novellas.

Favorite character: -
Least favorite: Colby, Lea and all the others

The story idea: 2/5
The realization of the story: 1/5

My rating: 4.5 of 5 ⭐️

Four years ago Lea Baker was a bit shy and self-conscious when she met Colby Davis for the first time. But Colby saw something in her and took her under his wing and introduced her to all his friends. Before long, she was one of them and she and Colby were best buds.

Except that, Lea has felt much more than friendship for Colby all this time and has kept that to herself. Now that she is leaving for college and Colby is about to pursue his dreams, too much alcohol at a party causes the truth to slip out.

****

Fantastic writing by Sloan Johnson and a great start to what promises to be an amazing serial!

This is NOT a standalone book, but instead the first of a series, and a bit of a change of speed for Sloan Johnson, but what a nice surprise it is!

A young adult story, setting out at the beginning of a transitional period in the lives of two 'friends', who have just discovered that the depth of the feelings they have for each other can no longer be kept a secret. This, just as they are about to set off on their individual paths, which of course, creates some complications.

The novella provides the setting, context and the solid base on which I can easily see an entire series built. And with an interesting plot direction I am eager to pursue, I am already impatient for the next book to come out!

✨A moving, vibrant and tender account of transitions.✨

This was a cute and short story. But I felt it's been done way too many times. Usually with the roles reversed though. It was very cute and sweet and I will read more to see where it goes and see how the story ends for these two.

We meet Lea a girl who is madly in love with her best friend, Colby. She has been hiding it for years and she is tired of seeing him with differen't women so she decides it's time to move on. Little does she know Colby feels the same way. He has just been trying to find a way to tell her. That night at the party is the perfect time. He can't stand seeing Lea with another guy and she has one too many drinks and is possibly slipped something. He takes her home and takes care of her. He is truly a sweetheart and I loved Colby. I didn't really get the cowboy feel from him like Lea calls him. But still, sweetheart. Lea wakes up in the same bed with Colby and freaks out, thinking she would be another notch on his post. She is sadly mistaken and realizes that quickly. In the end, the two friends tell each other how they feel over a game of "truth or dare." And it was touching and adorable and I was proud of Lea for being so "ballsy" and forward. We learn Colby can sing and we learn that is what he wants to do with his future. He gets an opportunity of a lifetime and Lea tells him he has to take it, they will make it work.
Somehow I think this is going to be a long road for them and I was soo excited! they just got together and he had to leave and then it ends shortly after. I will for sure be reading the next one. Their friends also intrigued me, I would like to read about them. Also I felt it left out the whole who might've drugged her. That might be brought up in the next books. But I was just left hanging on that. All in all it was a very good read and I enjoyed it. I would read more of this series and more books from the author. This just wasn't anything overly special or that I haven't read a dozen times, hopefully that changes :-)

I usually steer clear of novellas.  But the cover and synopsis of Truth or Dare by Sloan Johnson caught my eye.  And I'm so glad it did.  Lea and Colby are best friends and roommates.  Everything seems great, except Lea's in love with Colby and he just thinks of her as a friend...or so it would seem.

Can you imagine?  You're in love with your bff AND you live with him AND you can't tell him??  Well yes, I can imagine....that was me once...sort of.  I at least put 3,000 miles between us.  Of course that eventually got sorted and we've been married for 15 years.  Loving your best friend is hard.  HARD I tell ya.  You have to fake staring, longingly.  You have to pretend you don't mind when they date other people.  You have to pretend...all the time.  It's tiring and sad and just HARD!

I enjoyed the set up the story and I think there's some amazing potential here.  Though being just a novella it's hard to sink your teeth in and become emotionally invested.  Everything is still new and you can't rush laying the foundation.  That would be my only issue here.  The story does feel a tiny bit rushed and I get it, I just don't like it.  I wanted to explore more of the characters background.  That way I could connect better.  I'm assuming there's more to come with Lea and Colby's story.  I can't imagine it would just end the way it did.  Gee, I hope not...

I've been wanting to read something from this author for a while now.  I'm glad I finally got an opportunity.  I'll definitely be back for more.

TRUTH OR DARE is the first book in a 5 part serial following Lea Baker and Colby Davis as they try to navigate the distance between them as the both follow their dreams. Now, I will say, I didn't realize this was a 5 part serial when I got to the end of this installment, so I was ready to become violent. But I've calmed down now that I know there is more and can't wait to see what is in store for our couple.

Lea and Colby are best friends and roommates. They seem like an unlikely set of friends, but they've been stuck to each other's side since meeting in high school. Lea loves Colby, despite his man-whorish ways and wishes he would look at her like he looks at all the other girls in their small town. What Lea doesn't realize is Colby's feeling for her are the same as her's for him, except he doesn't think he's good enough for her. So he stays away and flirts with lots of girls in hopes that Lea will be pushed away and find a nice guy to settle down with. Of course, all this changes when Lea has a little too much to drink at a party and hero Colby swoops in to save her and take her home. What happened that night is enough for him to man up and let Lea make the decision about being with him or no.

This installment sets up the storyline for the rest of the serial. Colby, at Lea's insistence, heads to Nashville to pursue his dreams of being a singer while she stays home to finish up college. You can see where the angsty part of the storyline is going to come in and I'm looking forward to see how the author spins the rest of the story. Colby and Lea has such low self-esteem when it comes to their relationship that I'm sure there will be lot of misunderstandings and miscommunications before they get their HEA. I, for one, am looking forward to that.

A good, quick read with characters I instantly liked and can't wait to follow.

Truth or Dare...do you remember playing that game when you were younger? It's a game that allows risks to be taken and exposes hard truths that maybe wouldn't ordinarily be told. For Lea Baker and Colby Davis, the game gives the two best friends an opportunity to fess up to feelings that have always been there; it gives them a chance to become what they've always wanted to be - a couple.

Truth or Dare by Sloan Johnson is the first novella in a 5 part serial following Lea and Colby as they try to make a go at a relationship and still follow their individual dreams. Part One sets up Lea and Colby's back story and provides insight into what each character thinks and feels about the other as well as what life has been like for them. Every book that I've read by Sloan does a fantastic job at exposing the characters' inner turmoil, and this one is no exception. The dual point of views allows readers to get inside Lea and Colby's minds and try to understand why they have held off exposing and exploring their true feelings. Because it's a novella, we are not given as in depth an understanding of all that Lea and Colby feel, but I know that readers will be given those insights as the other parts are released. Emotions are high all the way through this short read, and they will no doubt continue to be as they try to make a long distance relationship work, dealing with all of the doubts and insecurities that go along with a connection of this nature. I, for one, can't wait to see what happens and experience all of the highs and lows that Lea and Colby are sure to face.

I'm not one to get into novellas because I usually feel like I'm robbed of something in the story. Well let me tell you, you won't feel that way at all with Sloan's novella Truth or Dare. I will tell you I actually cried at the end. CB and Cowboy were crying, yeah well me too. This is a heartbreaking story. Here I was through the book going from nervous to anxious to swooning to worried to excited to broken. Such a Full gamut of emotions for a novella. And it was perfect. I mean it. This truly is amazing. Sloan does an amazing job getting you to connect with the characters right away, feel their turmoil over their emotions and break with their decisions. She makes you fall in love with not just our main characters, but their best friends too. And the story flows so effortlessly. Well done Sloan.

Lea is in love with her best friend Colby. She sees herself as a girl that is a little overweight with nerdy glasses and frizzy hair and thinks that he only sees her as one of the guys. Plus he is constantly flirting and hooking up with other girls which makes her crazy.

Colby is in love with his best friend Lea. He knows that she has feelings for him too, but he won't let her give up everything to pursue a relationship. Instead he avoids it by flirting with other girls, but the hooking up...not so much.

Then one night they go to a party. The next day they play a game of Truth or Dare that changes everything.

I absolutely LOVE Sloan Johnson and everything she writes.
I can't wait to see what happens next with Lea and Colby.

I give Truth or Dare 4 hearts!

This is a cute, short read…..
Lea and Colby have been best friends for years and are now roommates….. Both of them are two scared of losing their friendship to admit how they really feel.
But one night….. Changes everything…..
This little novella is jam packed with every emotion as you are taken on the journey of Lea and Colby…. From friend zone to lovers….
By the end I loved Lea and Colby and laughed and cried right along with them….
This is the first of five novellas for this cute couple…. I am looking forward to reading more about them as they navigate their new relationship status across long distance…..
This is a must read…. It may be short but it will draw you in from page one and keeps you right wanting more to the very last page.

*I was gifted a copy in return for an honest review

THIS is the 1st NOVELLA in a series of 5. Truth or Dare walks the reader though just a few weeks in a long relationship of Lea Baker (aka CB) and Coby Davis (aka Cowboy). I really enjoy this simple easy read and found myself wanting more. Sloan is a great writer, who expresses emotion even in a too short story. Well written and lots of feelings about finding love, being friends and supporting each other. What more can you ask?

As I started reading this book I fell in love with every thing about this book. This book was full of so many different raw emotions that pulled on my heart strings . I could not put this book down .

Lea Baker and Colby Davis both try to find what they feel for each other . Because they both don't want to hurt their friendship. Neither if them want to stand in each other way from their dreams of the future .

But can they fight what they both their hearts want.

I truly fell in love with this sweet but raw emotions book. I can't wait to read more from this other .

This is the first installment of a five-part serial.

My Review

This is a Novella. #1 in a 5 part series.

Truth or Dare is a nice little short but sweet read. It’s a story of best friends Lea “CB” Baker and Colby “Cowboy” Davis that are in love with one another but neither party has expressed their feelings. This short little read is power punched with emotions of laughter, love, heartbreak and angst. I even had a little tear in my eye at one point in the story. The book is moderately angsty only driving me crazy for a few chapters or so. For such a short book the love scenes are pretty darn steamy. This storyline has been done many times but I like the twist of what direction the characters take.

The story flowed very good Ms Sloan paints a lovely visual in her descriptions making me feel as though I am on the sidelines. I really liked this book but I was definitely left wanting more. With the book being a novella I was aware there would be a continuation at some point so I took that into account when I read it. I am really excited to see how this story continues. I loved Colby his character was very well written.
I will be buying the other parts of the series to see if Colby and Lea get their HEA. Please say they do…

Quotes:

“It was never about not wanting you. Never.” – Colby

“I’ve thought about what it would be like to have you this way, but even the best dreams couldn’t compare to the reality. You’re beautiful, laid out like that for me.” – Colby

The way he hovers with his face inches from mine, staring into my eyes, is almost enough to bring me to tears. “So. F**king. Beautiful,” he groans between punishing kisses. “And all mine.”

I so completely and utterly LOVED this New Adult serial by Sloan Johnson. Since I am not a huge fan of cliffhangers, I do not often read serials. But now, after reading Truth or Dare I feel I must be missing out! Sloan was able to grab my attention from the beginning and make me fall in love with all the characters in story.

Truth or Dare revolves around a pair of best friends, Lea and Colby, who happen to also be room-mates. These two bonded in High School and have only become closer as the years go on. Scared to mess up what they have and scared that their futures are taking them in different directions neither one will own up to the feelings they have for the other.

This was very much a coming of age story of two best friends deciding if having everything they ever worth the possibility of losing all that they have. Deciding to take that next step from a friendship that has lasted years and life changes is difficult and this story proves that.

I really enjoyed watching Lea and Colby try to deal with the feelings they were having and the ramifications of their actions. Truth or Dare found just the right mix of fun and excitement and emotional stress. I thought the idea of all of this coming to fruition from a game of Truth or Dare was unique and exciting. As a young girl I can clearly remember playing games like this and just wishing something exciting would come out of it, so for me this was a youthful fantasy come true. Sloan wrote the beginning of a fun but beautiful story that I cannot wait to continue.

I was provided a copy by the Author/Publisher for an honest review.

First let me just day that this is the first book that I read from this author.

I just finish reading this book and I felt in love with it, I love the characters, this is a short story so I am gone keep this short since I don't want to give anything away.

This is the story of Lea and Colby, they are best friends/roommates, they being roommates for a while and the same with being best friends, but every time that Leah see him with some one else she gets mad, only her other best friend know the truth about how she really feels for Colby, on the other end Colby also have feelings for her but he haven't say anything, on one of the night that they when out with their friends, that was the night that he seen Leah with someone else, when Colby seen the condition that she was he decide to take her back home, that was the night that he made a decision that he was gone tell her how he felt, the following morning what they both where to expected was that their feelings where mutual.

I really enjoy and love reading this short story, and I hope that their is a second book cause I want to know whats gone happened next with them. Author Sloan Johnson THANK YOU for introducing me to this amazing characters and this awesome book love it.

As a novella, enjoyed seeing how Lea and Colby came to terms with their feelings for each other.

Lea has been in love with her best friend Colby for years. She has not had the courage to tell him how she feels. She’s been sitting back watching him date all the other girls in town. She wishes he felt the same way but will not jeopardize her friendship with him for the sake of her heart.

Colby best friends and roommate to Lea needs to leave town so that Lea can find a man worthy of her. He thinks she deserves so much more than he can give her. Although he won’t admit his feeling for her. He loves her enough to leave town. He would also rather have her as his best friend than lose that with a romantic relationship.

Once they admit that they love each other, they are given a few weeks before Colby has to make a decision to move to Nashville to follow his dreams and leave Lea at home while she finished school. Will their love be able to handle a long distance relationship?

Super cute novella. They were both intriguing characters. Maybe a little stubborn to admit their true feeling for each other but enjoyed the story. Of course when things were getting good the book was over. Just leaving you wanting more of Lea and Colby.

Truth or Dare is a shorter book, more of a novella that reminded me of my own days of hanging out with friends in our "spot" and sharing lots of memories that we would remember long into our adulthood. I was reminded that while we were all in a hurry to grow up, the really great times were those when we were young.

I think a lot of readers will be able to relate to crushing on a friend and patiently waiting for him to notice you. The story was real and there were no flashy moments or fluff. It was a well-written, emotional story about two friends who have feelings for each other, but both are holding back for different reasons. Sometimes life throws a few obstacles in your path and you have to get creative, face the facts, and tackle your dreams. My heart raced in all the right spots and felt butterflies when secrets were revealed.

This novella was still full of moments and lines that packed a punch. I had to hold back tears a time or two as I rooted for both Lea and Colby the entire story. My only complaint is a silly one, I want more!

I didn't like it.
The characters are incoherent.
It ends in a cliffhanger.
Most people don't think like this.

PS: My review is like this because I had a huge review but my net went down and I lost it (pun intended). So... yeah, I'm that lazy. I won't rewrite everything...

ARC Was Given To Blog For An Honest Review

First, let me say that author Sloan Johnson is a work horse. This lady can pull a story out so fast and have in her reader’s hands faster than I can say supercalifragilisticexpialidocious. The amazing thing is they are always great books and each so different. This new story is right up there with her other books.

Her new book Truth or Dare is a serial, what this means it is a complication of short stories that will go on basically until the author decides to bring it to an end. You can look at it almost like a television series.

I was caught up in the story from the very first paragraph. I am not going to go into details of the characters or the story too much since the book is so short. I will say that it is full of love, life and decisions. Just when you have the love of your life would you be willing to let them go to follow their dreams? How selfless can you be for the one you love? These are the questions the book made me feel. How would I be in this situation, what would I do? The answer for me is that I have no idea what I would do, so I am enjoying the fact that I will go along this journey of discovery with Colby and Lea as they figure it out and maybe I will find that their choices would have been my choices.

If you have not read any of Sloan Johnson’s literary work yet, then you must. Each of her stories is so diverse and can be completely different than the last book or series. I like that about an author it shows true talent. The next book in the Truth or Dare Series is Unexpected Truth will be available soon.

I suggest reading her sexy Isthmus Alliance series: Unexpected Angel, Unexpected Protector and Unexpected Consequences. She also has a riveting and emotional love story coming soon called Fragile Bonds.

I received a copy of Truth or Dare in return for an honest review.

3.5 stars for Truth or Dare.

Hmmmmm, now at the start of this book I really struggled to settle down into the story. Why was I reading about crowds gathering on a hill? It kinda felt like I was in a Need for Speed scenario and at a place all the 'bad guys' hang out including the hierachy of parking spaces...... I don't know why this was given a lot of air time about the meets and 'the gang', a small dose would have been ok but it seemed to take over a bit - but that's just my opinion.

Then......

Colby and Lea grew on me, once I got past the start I became emotionally invested with them. I've got to be truthful, it lost some rating because of the start and honestly this story is nothing that hasn't been done before and then it lost a bit more rating purely for the shortness. But as much as I have some lows with Truth or Dare I definitely have some highs too. Like I said this story has nothing really that sets it apart but once the emotional factor kicked it, that was it, Truth or Dare then went into another level. This had me swallowing tears, it's very emotional and it left me absolutely 100% wanting to know what happens next.

Then just when it gets really good it ends! So yeah I kinda screamed at the kindle and gripped it hard as I really wanted to chuck it! So I'm going to whinge it was too short (yeah I know it's a novella but I can want more!) But then isn't that a good sign because I wanted more. I was happy with the content, the path their story travelled and I thoroughly enjoyed the connection I got with both Colby and Lea and would happily have read another couple hundred pages! I will definitely be reading the next book.

Colby rescued Lea rescued her from high school hell by taking her dorky, overweight, glasses-wearing self under his wing and including her in the popular group. Now she's a junior in college, living as his roommate and in love with him. They were best friends who were terrified of the feelings they were avoiding. Because of their love, they both wanted more for each other.

This was a sweet story with likable characters. I loved that they weren't perfect. They had flaws. They were normal, everyday people; Lea a college student and Colby an aspiring musician. The story had a very natural flow that was nice for a shorter book. Nothing felt rushed or forced in anyway.

A lot happens and is resolved in this short story, but it does end on a cliffhanger with new questions that are left unanswered. It was packed with emotion and endearing moments that can only be shared by two people who know each other inside and out.

I would happily read the next story in this series. It was a great read for an easy afternoon. I look forward to learning about the next chapter of Lea and Colby's lives.

I give this book 4 stars and would pair it with a hard lemonade.

Lea Baker has been in love with her best friend Colby all through high school, and into her college years. They are best friends and roommates, but Lea is at a point where she realizes she can't keep loving him and accepting his friendship as a substitute for what she early wants. Lea has no idea that Colby has been in love with her too, and the only reason he hasn't revealed his feelings to her is because he knows that her future is to finish college, and his is to move to Nashville to pursue a career in music. He wants her to be in a relationship that she deserves, and he doesn't feel that he is that person. Additionally, he doesn't want to hurt her even more when he moves away.

This book was short and sweet. I thing the alternating perspectives helped the reader understand both characters and where they were coming from. It was hard to see them both suffering and feeling like they couldn't be open with one another about the depth of their feelings. Unfortunately it took a rough night and some unfortunate circumstances to bring them to a point where they stopped hiding from one another. The ending of the book felt real, and hopeful. I enjoyed this story and would recommend it to anyone looking for a quick friends to lovers read. 3.5 stars.

Sloan you are such a TEASE!!!! This novella and the first book in this series was amazing! Most of the time I feel ripped off and that I wasn’t given enough information to hold me over till the next book. But not Sloan she makes sure to take care of her readers and gives us enough to keep crawling back to her books! Sloan has a great way of making you connect to her main characters and giving them kick ace friends too! This book is crazy short but is totally worth the read and I can’t wait to jump on the crazy roller coast that is Lea & Colby’s relationship. I hope they make it but I know there will be some drama in the mix and I hope they win the battle. I give this book 4.5 stars

I knew I should have waited until the next book was done or maybe the whole blasted set of them. I loved the book but hated the ending because I am just not good at waiting! Colby and Lea are definitely a must read couple but I feel heart broken right now because the ending was sad for me because I hate when I have to wait. Okay temper tantrum over! This story has begun amazingly. These two are two of the most lovable characters and the angst is normal angst, nothing far fetched or stretched beyond practical. This is a beautiful story of two wonderful people. I can't wait for the rest of the story.

I loved this novella on friends that find more. I was hooked and could not put the book down!

Lea and Colby have been friends for years. They are even roommates. Yet both have been hiding their feeling from each other, not wanting to ruin the special bond they share. After a night of partying, emotions run high between the two of them and they decide to take a chance. The only problem is, Colby finally has the opportunity to chase after a life long dream. Will he throw it all away for Lea or will he have to leave the one girl he has ever loved behind?

So so good! I absolutely love anything Sloan writes. You can't go wrong!

Truth or Dare? I DARE you to read this and not feel something. TRUTH...this novella has some of every emotion. I connected with the characters right from the start and was pulled in to the story. It was a change from Sloan's normal writing because this is a story of young love. These friends are learning about themselves and each other on their journey. It is a sweet story and a great start to the series. I look forward to reading we're the journey will take them.
