As a college student, Mia Browning shared a carefree weekend with drummer Ryan Blackstone. Soon after, Mia learned she was pregnant, a fact her politically-ambitious parents would not allow to stay true. A forced abortion left her broken and alone.
Ten years later, Mia has found healing and embraced a new life in Christ. Mia arrives at church one Sunday, to find that the new worship minister is none other than the blue-eyed drummer of her past.
Seeing Ryan again after all these years is complicated. Serving at the youth camp means they are often thrown together, creating an unexpected friendship. Growing closer seems inevitable, but will they both have the courage to let go of the past and move forward into something deeper?
For those days when life feels complicated, here is a book that invites readers to remember the truest thing about all of us: that we are loved by God and saved by His grace. This book is a warm hug, a lighthearted laugh, and an invitation into joy!
Kelli Galyean is a Christian speaker and author, whose mission is to encourage women in every season of life, for the glory of God. She lives with her family in Texas.
This is a fantastic book! It’s a great story of redemption. Ryan and Mia are such great characters! The writing is really good and all the emotions are there. This story was lighter than I was expecting for the topic it covers but that doesn’t mean you won’t find yourself crying, I know I did. Mia had a forced abortion when she was 19 after a weekend fling with Ryan. They separated afterwards so he doesn’t know about the abortion. They meet again 10 years later and they have both been Christians for years now, they have changed a lot but still have some healing to do. I love how they handled seeing each other again and that they became friends. And I love the support they give each other. This book is full of great Christian content. I did have a couple minor issues but overall this is a great story and I definitely recommend! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5
Content: Mia had an abortion at 19 so this is discussed/mentioned repeatedly, social drinking(no getting drunk), Ryan is shirtless gardening and she ogles him a little
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.
I don’t read much Christian romance (more into mystery) but this was great. I actually found myself staying up late because I could put it down! Loved it!!
I appreciate that this romance tackles difficult subjects from a Christian perspective and that it does so with compassion and grace. Almost written in the style of a journal without an epistolary format, readers get to meet Mia Browning and understand why she has been having trouble in the dating department. Despite her relational struggles when it comes to romance, Mia has a thriving and vibrant church community around her, depicting how church members can care for each other and truly be a part of the discipleship journey for newer Christians. The references to church ministry are delightful and a week at summer youth camp brings me right back to being a camp counsellor, providing moments of levity amid the more serious subject of abortion.
The characters are well-rounded, mature, and responsible, which makes for an enjoyable reading experience, especially coupled with snippets of hymns throughout the text. The messages of God's grace, forgiveness, and mercy are powerfully conveyed and lived out, most notably through Ryan, along with some amazing people from the church. This book reveals how true community can in turn provide strength and encouragement to Christians who may be feeling stigmatized because of past sins. If you're looking for a romance that portrays how God can redeem heartbreaking pain and turn it into something beautiful, How Can It Be? shows us that scenario in a moving way.
This was a great second chance romance full of faith and redemption. I really enjoyed Mia and Ryan’s story. I love how this story points to Jesus and shows that no sin is too big for God to forgive.
What kept me from giving it 5 stars was her blaming her abortion on her parents. And one point Ryan even said she had no choice. But she did. She was 19. She wasn’t a child. She could have told her parents no. No one held her down and forced her to abort her baby. She really needed to take responsibility.
I was given a complimentary eARC of this book with no expectations of a favorable review.
“How Can It Be?” is the accurate question! How can it be that this is a DEBUT novel? Kelli’s work reads as though it’s from a well-seasoned writer. I truly couldn’t put this one down. The writing is smooth, the story is gripping, the characters are real, authentic and endearing on so many levels. Just an all-around stunning work of Christian fiction that takes on the topic of abortion and the grace and healing journey that followed for our main character, Mia Browning.
Mia had a quick fling with a drummer named Ryan Blackstone during her college years which resulted in pregnancy. Her parents forced her into having an abortion. A decade later, with therapy and finding her way to a new life through Christ, Mia has learned to cope with the grief of her past. What she didn’t expect was to see Ryan up on stage being introduced as the new worship leader of her church one Sunday. Complicated doesn’t even begin to properly describe the situation now at hand.
Mia avoids Ryan until it simply can’t be avoided any longer…especially once she realizes they’re both headed on a bus to volunteer at the same youth camp. Long overdue conversations are had, and I have to say, they were done SO well. Adult, mature, Christ centered conversations that will give you all the feels. Finding and growing in their Christian faith over the past decade has clearly changed both of their hearts and it was all just so beautiful and inspiring to read. A unique friendship forms between Mia and Ryan, and I assure you that you’re going to feel deeply connected to their story.
This book is a beautiful reminder that we all have a history that often includes a rocky road. Life is complicated and complex, but we are loved by God and can be saved by grace no matter our story. I look forward to following Kelli’s writing career because this book was incredible!
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

“Mia, you are an incredible woman. I look at you, and I see so much more than your past. You bear God’s image. You are precious, to Him and to me.”
_____________
Mia Browning lives with the regret, pain, and shame of having an abortion as a 19 year old college student everyday. Ten years later, with the help of counseling and finding forgiveness in Christ, Mia is moving forward with her life and has found healing in the midst of the pain.
When Mia very unexpectedly runs into the man whom she had her college fling with, Mia’s life is uprooted once again. To make things even stranger, he is the new worship leader at Mia’s church. Mia must come face to face with the man who changed her life ten years ago and reveal the secret she never had a chance to tell him years ago.
💭 My thoughts:
I have never read a book that featured characters facing the issues like in this book. I want to applaud the author for taking a difficult subject and diving head first into it. Abortion regret is real and the author explores this thoroughly.
This is a second chance romance but it’s a lot more, too. Mia never told Ryan about her abortion and must do so now, ten years later. Both have committed their lives to Christ but there is so much pain and regret. Counseling and forgiveness are a big part of their journey together and I enjoyed how the author tied together their faith and healing process.
This book has a lot of faith elements incorporated in, reminding the reader there is no perfect or sinless person and God’s grace, love, and mercy is for all who seek it.
Thank you to the author for giving me a complimentary copy of the book in exchange for my honest review.
Content: kisses only, no language. Social drinking, abortion is a big theme, complicated family dynamics.
I enjoyed this book so much. I laughed out loud at points and was STRESSING at points. It took me on the exact ride that any good RomCom should take you on. I haven’t really found anything quite like this book - it's packed full of solid Christian foundation and perspective right alongside the storyline. Mia (main character) has been through a lot and has landed in a healthy place through years of therapy as well as through the work of building a strong community of friends around herself. Through her inner dialogue you see her processing, struggling with old demons, fears and insecurities, but then reminding herself of what is true in the gospel, what is true about her identity and all the fruit of the work she’s done.
It’s a fictional story that tells the truth and I think every reader will have fun, feel encouraged and find this story relatable in one way or another! Can't wait for book 2!
I read over 250 pages of this book in 48 hours, with four young children at home, while packing for a move, cleaning, working from home and even snuck in a few chapters with my three year old on my lap during family movie night.
Kelli Galyean has made me laugh out loud many times over the years and I have kept her meaningful words close to me, literally (like on my fridge for months and months) or metaphorically, close to my heart, cherished in my mind.
Now I have her debut novel and I am astonished by her talent. I was rooting for Mia and Ryan and enjoyed the insights into Mia’s journey as the reader. What a treat. Thank you Kelli for sharing your work with the world!
A refreshing and uplifting read! A second chance encounter with the very last person Mia would ever want to see sends her into a whirlwind of emotions. With humor, dynamite dialogue, and dazzling insight, Kelli Galyean pens characters that you feel invested in from early on. Mia and Ryan's journey is one that leaves you reflecting on the past but also hopeful about what is yet to come. It's a reminder that we are not defined by our mistakes. It's an encouraging story that should be shared time and time again.
Stars: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ & 1/4 (4.25 stars) Read: September 2024
Series: A Work in Progress, #1 Format: Kindle e-Book Challenge Prompt: CNL’s #30 of 50 — a book I pre-ordered
Book #91 of 2024: This novel is the author’s debut so she is subsequently an NTM author also. The book cover has a pretty watercolour scene.
An early reader recommended this novel and the storyline appealed to me. I pre-ordered it and I’m glad that I took a chance. This is a very sweet story, albeit a difficult topic with the FMC having had an abortion 10 years prior, and before she committed her life to Christ.
I felt the author dealt with this delicate topic in a realistic manner and didn’t shy away from the trauma and difficulties that resulted from her parents ultimatum. I do wish the story would have included resolve with her parents for the selfish and cruel decision they forced upon her.
As much as I enjoyed the story, I did feel there was something lacking or missing somehow. It did feel a bit like the characters seemed younger than they were at times. Sometimes I felt like the story was going through methodical steps and was missing more character development and connectivity or something.
I did enjoy the community feel though it was a little too perfect at times. I quite enjoyed this novel and I look forward to the rest of the series.
✅ Second Chance Contemporary Romance ✅ Jesus changes everything! ✅ True friendship is a huge blessing. ✅ Our sin is never too big for God.
There are so many things I want to say about this book - it was moving, heartbreaking, and swoon worthy! This is author Kelly Galyean’s debut novel and it thrills with heartfelt friendships, moving and inspiring faith, and a slow burn romance that makes you sigh at the sweetness.
This book tackles some very hard topics including the question is my sin too much for Christ? We follow Mia Browning as she struggles with the shame she feels from choices made 10 years in the past. After a weekend with a boy at the age of 19, Mia ends up pregnant. When her mom finds out, she forces Mia to have an abortion so as not to muddy her and her father's aspiring political careers. Despair threatens to consume Mia but the faithful support and encouragement of her close friend Anna pulls her from the edge. Mia finds Christ and her life transforms. She starts the long journey of healing with the new found love and forgiveness in Christ. Fast forward 10 years and her life is turned upside down when the new worship leader of her church turns out to be none other than the very man whom she spent a weekend with so long ago.
I absolutely adored everything about this contemporary romance! The faith was moving and inspiring. It was so refreshing to read both the struggles and the triumphs these characters went through. The importance of forgiveness for others and one's self was beautifully played out. This book showed how important it is to have the right kind of friends and community surrounding us as we walk this path in life. No man is an island. No sin is too great for the love of Christ. No person is too far gone to be redeemed.
Oh, and the romance?! 😍😍😍 So beautiful! So swoony! 🥰
Thanks to the author, I was gifted an ARC of this novel. All opinions expressed in this review are completely my own!
Kelly Galyean's debut novel "How Can It Be?" takes a really tough topic and turns it into a novel of forgiveness through God's grace and brings the reader to a beautiful ending. This is a second chance romance where both the man and woman have come to know Christ since their first relationship many years in the past.
Mia had an abortion as a teen, the pregnancy a result of a whirlwind relationship with a man named Ryan. After their relationship ended, both became Christians, and that faith is what eventually leads Ryan to accepting a job at Mia's church. Neither knew the other would be there, but when they meet again, both deal with so many emotions, especially Mia who never told Ryan she was pregnant.
This is a contemporary, second chance romance with a strong Christian faith theme. Faith in Christ's forgiveness is apparent throughout and this is a book that gives hope to the reader and reminders that nothing is too much for God's grace. The author does a great job portraying real emotions in her characters and the characters are very relatable. She shows that not only do we need God's forgiveness and grace, but that therapy can be essential when dealing with trauma and there's no reason to shy away from that type of help.
This book is for a Christian audience with a Christian worldview. It will not be for every person out there but for someone looking for something filled with Christ's forgiveness and a sweet, contemporary romance, this book is for you. I personally enjoyed the book and look forward to seeing what Kelli writes next in this "Work of Progress" series.
I thank the author for a chance to read an ARC of this book. All opinions expressed are my own.
✔️ friends to lovers ✔️ healing ✔️ Christian fiction ✔️ found family ✔️second chance ✔️close proximity
This book was absolutely heartwarming and wholesome. I loved every single bit of this! And this is a debut?! Unbelievable. I read it in just a couple of hours because I was so engrossed in the story and I just needed to know more about Mia and Ryan.
How can I even put Mia and Ryan's relationship into words? Their healing process was a beautiful thing to read. I also loved how they got to know each other again and fell in love again. And their struggles and fears were so real. But I loved how both of them were brave enough to overcome them and how strongly they held to God's hand. They let him be first, let him heal what needed to be healed, and let him work in their lives, their pasts, traumas, and relationship.
I felt so seen by the whole community of faith here. I don't think I've ever read a book to which I related so much in that sense. The friendships here are everything a friendship should be, truly precious.
But most of all, this was such a beautiful reminder of God's undying love, faithfulness, mercy, grace, power and just the beauty of his nature. Also, I loved that the main point here was healing after abortion. I think it's not something that's widely talked about in church even though it's heavily important, especially, on how to open our hearts and having Jesus' grace towards women who have gone through something like this.
If you're a Christian, I highly recommend reading this book. As for me, I can't wait to read more books by Kelli.
Thank you so much to the author Kelli Galyean for giving me an eARC for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
How can it be this is her first book and it BE so good?
I read mostly Christian non-fiction “smart books”, as I like to call them. I love to hold a book, read each word and be surrounded by colorful highlighters and pens. I’m encouraged by those who give time and thought about scripture and who God is.
How Can It Be is a fictional book that equally encouraged me. Through strong character development and imagery, I felt I was apart of their friendships. So much REDEMPTION in this book, even in the little details. How do you navigate church community and dating? If you have a teen or single, this book will encourage you through the lead character’s story on how this CAN be done. How do you move forward when you “gobsmacked” by your past? This story gives hope even when your past might be shameful, ugly and difficult to own. Includes many characters we see in the church today; amazing church mothers, youth leaders, singles, multi-gen..
The author is gifted in showing through these characters how it CAN be when you trust, you surround yourself with Godly women, you ask for forgiveness and you practice patience.
Because the characters are so well developed, I’m looking forward to the author’s next books as she delves into the lives of others we met in How Can It Be.
This book deals with heavier themes like abortion and addiction. All of this is done through the redemptive lens of Christ.
This is her debut and I’m honestly blown away. The story is paced really well, the dialogue is quick and comedic, and the book is edited thoroughly. I enjoyed this so much.
Kelli gave me a heads up that the youth minister in this book is a bit… much. 😅 And he for sure is. We need to see his glow up one day, sis, because the bones for his story are there— he just needs to mature and meet his match. 🤣
I really enjoyed the perspective this book provides on what it must be like to be someone with choices in their past that lifetime Christians just don’t know how to embrace. There are church people who deal with these harder themes well in the book, and there are church people you just wanna serve a knuckle sandwich!
I LOVED that Ryan is a leader for Mia from the jump. All of the moments with them together were just 🤌🏻. There was so much tension and yearning… again, cannot believe this is her debut.
You can find this book on Amazon. Thank you to the author for sending me a digital copy to read. I’m anxiously awaiting the next installment.
Ok. I generally do not like Christian fiction, mostly bc of the fuzzy theology. But this is the first christian fiction book where the theology of salvation was actually really clear. Now there was one reference to “forgiving yourself” (sorry people, it’s just not in the Bible), and a lot of “therapy” whereas I’m a biblical counseling gal. But I really can’t complain overall. The story: Typical. Ending is no surprise. Writing is just Ok. It’s a sweet story. The main character is dealing with a past abortion, but she truly knows and has received the forgiveness found in Jesus. My only gripe - and again, this is common in Christian fiction books, is that the main male character is basically perfect. Dumb. But overall decent story. I only read this bc Jen Wilkin recommended it 🤷🏼♀️ Not sorry I read it. Wouldn’t have missed it if I didn’t. Haha
I absolutely loved Mia and Ryan's story! It’s such a tender tale about two people who, after years apart, reconnect in an unexpected way. Both have found faith in Jesus, but Mia is caught off guard when Ryan shows up at her church, forcing her to confront her past with him. The journey takes us from the pain of sin to the beautiful transformation that comes with forgiveness and redemption.
This story truly gave me all the feels and left me with heart eyes! If you enjoy a book that explores themes of brokenness and heartache, yet also highlights faith, friendship, and love, I highly recommend this book. Wonderful second chance romance! ❤️
Just a heads-up: the book does touch on some heavy topics, including the consequences and aftermath of unplanned pregnancy and abortion.
Kelli weaves together this beautiful love story with so much joy and tenderness, you won’t want to put it down. She handles sensitive topics with so much grace and courage, never shying away from difficult truths. Be prepared to cry, laugh, and shimmy your way through the pages. Each chapter encourages and reminds you of the beauty of Jesus and His love! Kelli is authentic to herself and the characters, transporting you to their community and making you feel like you’re a part of the crew. This uplifting book is a must read!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book! Kelli has a gift of describing things so well, I felt like I was in the story, experiencing all the action. It's a great love story about a couple, but it's also such a sweet story of community within the local church. I found myself wanting a church that loves me so well. What a beautiful picture of how Christ uses the body of believers to draw us to His side...or, if you're as well-versed in hymns as Mrs. Galyean, His precious bleeding side. I can't wait to read her next book!
I have become an audio listener only over the years - this is the first physical book I have read in a long time. It was so good! It is a beautifully written second chance love story about two people who show that Gods love and redemption is available to everyone and has no end. This book was wonderfully funny. You will fall in love with Mia and Ryan’s story. The characters are relatable and real. It was one of the best books I have read all year. I cannot wait for the next book in this series.
How refreshing to have a Christian fiction novel set in modern times that encompasses both a sweet love story and the utter dependence on Jesus. The characters were well formed, the plot was written beautifully alongside the reminders of the work Christ did on the cross for our freedom. I needed to hear these truths and having my heart encouraged along with diving into the depths of an amazing story…wow. This might be the author’s first but I’m hoping she will have many more to follow this book because I am hooked!
How Can It Be took me on an emotional roller coaster ride, but it was a beautiful reminder of God‘s faithfulness. I loved how the author wrote the faith elements without sounding overly preachy, how realistic the character characters were, and how amazing the church community was. I do wish that Mia and her parents could have reconciled, but I understand that not everyone gets the closure they deserve. This Christian novel was well written, filled with biblical truth, and that redemptive ending was pure perfection!
I finished this book in one evening! I could not put it down! Kelli had me laughing, crying, and worshiping all in one book! She handled sensitive topics with such grace, and reminded the readers about what God says about them! I was encouraged, convicted, and reminded about the truths of God… all while laughing and crying my way through this book.
This book is truly excellent and I am hoping that this isn’t the end of the story! We need more!!
I struggled a little in the beginning with the writing style, but i pretty quickly fell in love with Ryan and Mia and their story. There was always more to unwind between them. The focus was always on God and His faithfulness, His forgiveness. I loved it. A very good emotional Christian romance. Single POV. I normally don't enjoy single POV but I didn't miss Ryan's POV. It still felt very full.
This book is full of heartwarming moments & inspiring proclamations of God’s love and faith. The message of forgiveness, mercy & grace is one that can resonate with everyone. The cozy romance, friendships and found family are all delightfully endearing. The characters are relatable and entertaining. I didn’t want the story to end!
Oh my goodness. I loved everything about this book. It took a tough topic and dealt with it gently, but realistically. I absolutely loved the redemptive theme and the freedom found in Jesus. I will recommend this book to everyone! The side characters were great. The youth pastor in this story was spot on!
This book left the sweetest mark on my soul! Mia and Ryan fill the pages with healing, second chances, forgiveness, romance, joy…and every feeling under the sun! They will burrow into your heart and make a home. I didn’t want their story to end!
What a beautiful romance written from a Christian perspective filled with grief and struggle but God’s redemption story. I loved the picture of Christian community as well. This hooked me reading the first and second time, so so good! Can’t wait for the next!!
