Brooke Martin is an EMMY-winning anchor and reporter. For 15 years, Brooke told the community’s stories and asked the hard questions of those in charge. From an Oval Office interview to a conversation with a neighbor who just lost their job, Brooke has had a front row seat to both the impressive and the important stories that make up our lives.
But none impacted her more than her own. Shortly after announcing her second pregnancy on air, Brooke and her husband received a fatal diagnosis for their daughter, Emma Noelle. For 8 months, Brooke carried their daughter while publicly walking through grief and ultimately loss. Brooke is now working to show others how life’s fires have the ability to bring new growth, greater beauty and everlasting hope.
A beautifully written and important book full of Gospel truth. For anyone who is walking through pain or loss, grab these words and hold tight. Brooke is testifying to Gods work in the real world and in her real life. Absolutely stunning work.
3.5, rounded down to a 3. This book was recommended to me. While I don't usually read popular Christian nonfiction, I was curious and am glad that I read it. Likes: Martin used images and stories that resonated with me and prompted me to think more deeply about how God is moving in my own grief. I feel more curious and open to meaning-making within my own story. Dislikes: I found Martin's theology of sin to be lacking and hyper-individualistic, leading to some "try harder" messaging. I felt that overall, there could have been more careful theological work and more nuanced conclusions. Overall: I am grateful for Martin's words at this point in my journey, but I'd be hesitant to broadly recommend.
Such a fantastic book, one I will absolutely be keeping around for reference, re-reading and lending to friends. A few chapters into the book I resolved to grabbing a pen and underlining the many, many profound thoughts and truths that filled the pages of text.Brooke offers so much more than a nice cliche response to suffering, but rather serves up meaty truth that lifts up and emboldens one to hope for so much more whether currently in a difficult season, in hindsight of one or while walking alongside someone in their season of grief.
Incredible read. It’s hard to find a book that walks you through thoughts and questions that we have in the midst of suffering and trials but maybe don’t want to say out loud. Beautiful and raw testimonies that point you back to a foundation of truth. Highly recommend this book no matter where you’re at in your life journey. It can be helpful for yourself or helpful to lead others in pain. 5 stars!!!
This book is a must to read for anyone! Whether you have experienced trials or not, we all will go through hard times and this book helps you to understand why we can't always have a "rose garden" life, but can grow and find purpose in our suffering and move forward in spite of it. I ordered several to give to people that are struggling and I will read it over again!

If you have suffered loss of any kind, this book has great truths to guide you through the pain of grief. I highlighted many passages and will use this book as a reference for anyone who needs someone to listen and share their pain. Highly recommend.
By chapter two I had to reach inside my bedside drawer in search of pens and highlighters. I started underlining, circling, and staring all over the pages. Brooke dove deep into all the layers of how we survive trials through God's grace and love. Beautifully written, and highly recommended!
This book has heart and is very accessible. I loved the overarching metaphor and it worked well throughout. In some areas, I wished for deeper content.
This is an amazing relational book about how to grow closer to God. It was so good that I plan to read it again. The personal experience of the author makes reading this book a very real testimony to God's love.
