Izzy King has a reputation. He's the wild one. The fun one. The one who does what he wants. And if he’s a little broken under his fun-loving façade, well, that’s nobody’s business—especially not Split Rock Ranch’s long-time vet, Dr. Keegan Reid. That guy is the worst. Izzy keeps his distance—that is, until his boss decides they need to work together to care for a group of rescue horses. Whatever. Izzy will do what he does best and ignore the situation until it goes away.
Keegan Reid knows what he wants. He’s happy with his practice, his dogs, his cabin, and volunteering with the local animal rescue. What he doesn’t need is chaos—and Izzy King is chaos incarnate. Yet somehow, that doesn’t prevent him from picking up the verbal gauntlet every time Izzy throws it down. There’s something about Izzy that won’t let him turn the other cheek.
Izzy and Keegan might fight like cats and dogs—but everyone knows that high emotions often hide explosive chemistry. Keegan thinks they’d be a good fit if Izzy gave him a chance. But apparently, that old saying about leading a horse to water also applies to stubborn ranch hands. Izzy’s got a past that makes him prone to bolting, and Keegan needs to decide if he wants to tame another feral creature.
Something Unavoidable is book six in the Split Rock Ranch series. It includes an age gap, sass and banter, smoking chemistry, and two guys who don’t hate each other as much as they think they do. It can be read as a standalone but the series is best read in order. Look inside for important CW.
Rory Maxwell discovered romance novels on her mom’s bookshelf when she was probably too young to be reading them—the reward for being a nosy kid with great reading comprehension. The magic of a dial-up internet connection led her to the wonderful world of MM fanfiction a few years later and she fell in love with the genre. In 2019 she woke up with a plot bunny, opened a word doc, and started trying to figure out how this writing stuff worked.
Rory grew up outside of Washington, DC, moved away, and then came back for reasons she doesn’t fully understand. An artist and writer, she always has too many exciting ideas and not nearly enough free time. One day, she hopes to escape to the mountains and open an LGBTQIA+ friendly bed and breakfast where she can work from home and write as much as she wants. In the meantime, she splits her time between her day job and writing MM romance with heart, heat, and happy endings.
Well, who would have thought that it would take a new-to-me author to make me SOB, cry literal big fat tears, for the first time in I don't know how many months? Animals were involved, so no surprise there: those last few chapters HIT HARD.
Anyway, this was a delight. "Something Unavoidable" was an enemies to lovers romance done seriously right, with the right amount of animosity and misunderstandings and annoyance to make the transition to lovers believable (and not completely impossible!); the protagonists were WONDERFUL. Both of them are snarky and grumpy in very different ways, and I loved seeing them come together and find the ways they manage to fit. Keegan was fabulous, so damn assertive and domineering and protective, but also kind and patient (without being a doormat!), while Izzy was literally the human equivalent of a stray cat, hissing and spitting: he attacks first because he's afraid of being hurt, he sleeps around because he's touch-starved and doesn't think he deserves more, he's an asshole but hides such much heart and kindness. Ugh, I loved them both. Their dynamic was absolutely FIRE. I won't lie, the reason I wanted to read this book was because it had a D/s relationship (and fisting was mentioned). Who am I to resist? I'm glad to say that the steam did not disappoint, even though I maybe wanted a smidge more just for funsies. I loved how well they fit together, and I loved their dynamic both inside and outside the bedroom. Seeing them go from strong dislike to love was a treat.
I loved the side characters: I'm not sure if I'll read all of the previous books now, but I'll definitely give a few a go. A few characters intrigued me, and since quite a lot of the secondary romances on page had Daddy kink, I'm going back on my promise to never touch a Daddy romance (apart from a select few authors!) to see if Rory Maxwell can make that short list. And of course the animals: I'm a big animal softie, so no surprises there, but without spoiling too much, I shed most of my tears because of them and their bond to their humans. UGH, so cute.
This book can definitely standalone in my opinion. Sure, you'll miss out on a few backstories, but if you don't mind that, you definitely won't feel lost. I highly recommend this romance!
TWs/CWs: sexual assault (past, secondary characters), suicide (past, secondary character), grooming (past), panic attack, heavy drinking, sexual relations while drunk (not between main characters), animal mistreatment.
Thank you GRR for the ARC. This is my honest review.
I loved this book so much. The tension, the dialogues, the push and pull, the emotional take, it was fantastic. Izzy had trauma buried deep in himself and he didn't know how to get out of it, he was drowning. And then his enemy forces himself into his life and everything turns upside down. I loved Keegan, he was patient with Izzy and he was there for him even when he pushed him away. He became his rock and gave Izzy the courage to finally turn the page in his past. They were so good together, they understood each other and they were so adorable and hot together
Something Unavoidable is the sixth book in the Split Rock series by Rory Maxwell. I did miss the previous book, but was able to join right back in with the group here. The relationship is new to the series, but many of the previous characters are present and their stories are intertwined. If you like knowing everything about a series, you may want to start back a few books.
I like the atmosphere of Split Rock Ranch and I like catching up with all of the MCs as the series progresses and I was looking forward to a return visit once again. I found the prologue in this book frustrating and that set me up for an uneven reading experience, however.
Izzy is a brat, and he despises Keegan. Underneath Izzy’s bratty exterior where he shows himself as a cool guy, always looking for the next opportunity for a hot encounter, you’ll find something completely different.
Keegan is the Split Rock Ranch vet. When several hurt horses need attention, Izzy’s boss shoves Izzy to Keegan.
“Look, you need the help, and he needs a project. Just try not to kill each other.” Easier said than done!
Oh boy, Keegan wants to spank Izzy, because he’s really getting on his nerves. Why does Izzy always turn his words into something negative? Working closely with Keegan sets Izzy on fire. Nothing can stop his urge to get over with it, a BJ should do.
On their way where they get closer, Keegan understands there’s something huge going on in Izzy’s life.
Keegan has some amazing dogs, one especially, Riley, a service dog who’s constantly attaching herself to Izzy. Izzy suffers from panic attacks, sweet Riley is of great help. But ha! Izzy is still a brat, still with needs, and wants them fulfilled by Keegan, he likes Keagan’s dominance.
“Baby, you never stood a chance.”
So far the short version. The long version is way more complicated and way more emotional.
That was quite an experience, and impressively written. The build-up of this story was perfectly done. It’s hard at times, and super emotional, it brought me to tears, but there are also easy-going times, and steaming scenes to find! Both main and secondary characters are lovable, (including the dogs and the horses). To be honest the whole series is wonderfully executed! The author did a great job!
There are content warnings, be sure to check them.
Thank you, Rory for my copy of Something Unavoidable. This is the 6th book in the Split Rock Ranch series; it can be read as a standalone but I definitely recommend starting at the beginning.
I have wanted Izzy's story since he moved into the loft at Split Rock Ranch but I was not ready for his past 💔 I am not a content warnings reader but for some it is a must. Izzy & Keegan are forced to work together after Keegan asks the people at Split Rock Ranch to foster some animals he has helped rescue.

Review for (Split Rock Ranch-4) Something Unavoidable by Rory Maxwell
Izzy, a wild child who wants to have fun, does whatever he wants. I loved the way Izzy was written with human emotions and that this book was just about having fun and heated moments. I wanted to cry for Izzy because he was broken and in pain. I can't say enough about authors that write real things that we all have gone through and that you can get to the other side and receive what you are meant to. Then there is Dr. Keegan, who works at the Split Rock Ranch as a vet. Izzy isn't, umm, that crazy about Keegan. Then these two men are put together to help some horses. Oh, I love books that have horses. This story just kept building and building into a very well-written story. I just couldn't put it down till I found out what happened to these two men. Well done, Rory Maxwell. I need more.
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.75 Spice: 🌶️🌶️.75 The hurt/comfort trope in this book was so stunningly written. There was a really accurate depiction of anxiety and trauma (check the TW) but Keegan and Izzy were perfect for each other. I loved reading Izzy’s story POV and hearing him learn to trust the world again. This was an absolutely stunning story!
Hands down my favorite book in this series! Something about this story hit me right in the feels, it was such an emotional and sweet ride. Izzy has been such a wild card throughout this series and I loved his journey to healing. Keegan was the perfect man to tame is bratty side but at the same time show him that he deserved so much love ❤️. I adored the animals in this story, especially Keegan's dogs, they added so much heart. I would absolutely recommend this book it was fantastic.
* I received and ARC from GRR, this is my open and honest review *
So I have to admit that as excited as I was about this book, I ended up being a little weary at the beginning. It took me a couple of chapters to get into this one because of the dislike that Izzy and Keegan originally had for each other. However, I ended up loving this book even more than I thought I would! I love the way that Keegan works to figure out Izzy's moods and works to gain Izzy's trust. I love that even though Keegan doesn't originally care for Izzy, he learns that he wants to protect Izzy at all costs and to help him through whatever he is going through. And I love how we start to figure out that Izzy's moods and his "need" for sex is more of a defense mechanism than anything else. Once things started to change between Izzy and Keegan, I could not put this book down. I love the way that Keegan breaks down Izzy's walls and the way that he supports him in any way that he can, but is also weary of how Izzy will react. And I love the relationship that Izzy builds with Riley and that she because Izzy's service dog! It warms my heart that she catches on so fast and that Keegan starts to reward her for the work because he knows that it is one of the best ways that he can support Izzy. I love the week that Izzy spends at the cabin with Keegan, I think that is what ultimately solidifies the bond that the two of them have and is what helps Izzy to finally break down all of his walls. I love the scene where Keegan starts to figure out and pull Izzy from always thinking he needs sex and instead just needs someone to be around and hold him. I love that even though everything with Josh causes Izzy so much anxiety, he is finally able to come forward on his terms and share his story in support of his friends. I think that this is so important, and I love that he tries to do it without Keegan because he knows that it is the last barrier between him finally getting the kind of relationship that he has always longed for and kept himself from having for so long. And finally, the end! I mean could it be any more perfect. Izzy realizes after Keegan picks him up that he doesn't need sex from Keegan but that he needs someone to just be there with him and to be held and finally has the courage to truly ask for what he needs. And then Keegan makes him face Emma again which that conversation just melts my heart because Emma says all the things that Izzy needs to hear and finally makes him realize that he was as much a victim as Emma and Sammy were. I also loved finding out that Emma married Stew and then for Emma to have kept Blackbird for Izzy all this time, hoping that one day Izzy would come back for her! It was everything I wanted from the ending, and I couldn't be happier about Izzy finally getting back in the saddle and getting to go on the trail rides at the ranch. And I also love that we get to find out about Archer finally moving to New York and Alice getting more independent and living on her own at her happy and safe place at the ranch! So, I guess it's obvious that this book was absolutely everything I was hoping for with Izzy's story and I cannot wait until the next book is released in order to continue this series!!

It seemed like this book took forever to be released, I was so anxious for it. So here we go.
Did it disappoint? No. But it didn't hit the spot.
As always in a good development, the author managed to keep the chronological order aligned with the other books. Amen. The writing continues to be good, simple (When I say simple, I don't mean empty, but free of excesses, fancy words, unnecessary embellishments, irritating cuts, etc.). We return to the beautiful setting created by her, which even without seeing it, I can easily imagine. The secondary characters, new and old, didn't overwhelm the book. This one was more intense, the dramas were based on traumas that generate more anguish, although the author expressed everything briefly, but without throwing it to the wind. It was very emotional. There was a bit of hot/cold here, but it was faster, which didn't bother me so much.
I was mad at Keegan. That sums it up pretty well. He was the epitome of the hypocritical, alpha male know-it-all with Izzy in the beginning. I hated it. His actions helped shape Izzy's future, even if he already had the trauma, he could have gone down a less self-destructive and dangerous path. Because yes, it's not wrong if someone wants to be around with different people one night after another. His body, his rules and all that Jazz. But it's still dangerous, especially the way he did it, often drunk and as much as Hunter tried to protect him, demanding identification for every single case he went out with at night, it was still risky. So, would he be different if Keegan had stayed with him in the beginning? No. But, as it turned out later, it made an impression on him, because he wanted his first time with Keegan, and the way he said it was quite revealing, his excitement at pretending that this would be his first time and with the man he had chosen not because of something or pain, but because of the real and genuine attraction he felt for the vet. Oh, right! He's just overvaluing the first time. YES. Some people don't care, others do and that's okay. I know there are a lot of cultural issues here, but I can't get my head around it, parents who leave their children in the hands of acquaintances or third parties, without the slightest supervision. That to me is a blatant NO. The worst thing we see in real life, and the stories are simply terrible. The book showed a bit of this: Izzy, as an impressionable teenager, was left in the care of an abuser in sheep's clothing (it seems like I'm reading a real news story). He was molded to the guy's will and it wasn't even worse because he fell in love with the guy and didn't experience the trauma of having his body violated like his friends did. But that doesn't diminish his trauma and pain in any way. Even more so because when he found out everything, he was already an adult and felt responsible for the acts committed by the monster, in addition to suffering for having feelings for the guy who was capable of committing so many atrocities. Tough. This book could have been a little longer. I thought the ending was rushed. After all the suffering Izzy went through, the least it could have been was more of her happiness and the beginning of a possible cure. There was no interaction with her parents, it was just mentioned. And even her interaction with her mare, whose departure was yet another trauma in her life, was very summarized.
Dual POV. Izzy and Keegan. Contemporary. Pain/Comfort. Small Town. Ranch. Pets. Horses. Animal Rescue. Mentions animal abuse. Mentions sexual abuse. Mentions abuser's suicide. PTSD. Past traumas. Panic attacks. Anxiety. Deep emotional issues. Difficulty moving on. Self-sabotage. Distancing from parents.
[I received an advanced copy of this book. All reviews and ratings are my own.]

I have been waiting (impatiently) for Izzy's book since he first showed up in this series and it did not disappoint. If you've been reading this series, you already know that there is more to Izzy King than he shows the world. I've always thought of him as that untamable wild horse that just needs the right handler to reach him, and it's a pretty apt comparison. Meanwhile, Dr. Keegan Reid - Split Rock Ranch's vet - has a strong aversion to people in general, and especially dislikes the kind of pandemonium that seems to follow Izzy around.
From his first introduction in book 1, Izzy has been all wild charm and sharp edges, his brash, chaotic energy clashing brilliantly with Keegan's steady, no-nonsense demeanor. But their chemistry has been undeniable, and their interactions filled with sharp banter. And when they are forced to work together, their interactions are charged with a tension that absolutely leaps off the page.
Where this book truly shines, though, is in the moments when the layers of both characters are pulled back. Izzy's wild, rebellious bravado hides a tender vulnerability that's handled with so much grace and care, and watching him wrestle with his past is both heartbreaking and inspiring. And Keegan is the perfect foil to Izzy's storm, even as his calm strength and quiet determination are constantly challenged. Their dynamic is truly compelling - whether they're fighting over rescue horses or sharing quiet, emotionally fraught moments, you want them to figure it out.
From the location of the book to Keegan's dogs, every choice made by Rory Maxwell seems to have been done carefully, ensuring that they are integral to the plot and not just window-dressing. Split Rock Ranch adds a backdrop of warmth and familiarity, and the rescue horses and dogs are the perfect symbols of rebuilding trust, healing and second chances.
If you love enemies-to-lovers, grumpy x sunshine pairings, redemption arcs, and love stories that feel like they've been earned, Something Unavoidable is an absolute must-read.
Something Unavoidable is the 6th (and possibly final?) book in Rory Maxwell's Split Rock Ranch series, and to me, one of the most emotional ones. Fortunately there was a content warning section in the beginning of the book to let readers know, as some scenes may be triggering to some. For me, I found them healing. Well, at least when I finished reading the entire thing.
The two MMC are Izzy and Keegan, who have been mentioned plenty of times in prior books. While they have been around as secondary characters to help their friends find their HEA, finally their turn! Izzy is Micah's (one of the MMC in the first and second books of the series) former roommate from college, who he now works at the Split Rock Ranch with him. Keegan is the town veterinarian, so they're well acquainted.
But not as well acquainted as they each want. Izzy's behavior leaves him to become well known in the gay community, something Keegan isn't a big fan of. But who is he to judge, right? Keegan becomes suspicious that something may have happened to Izzy to make him behave as such; turns out Izzy has a shared past of sexual abuse with his former horse riding peers and it's bringing into the present.
Along with a very traumatic riding accident that changes him into a very distrusting young man, and pushes Keegan away. Yet Keegan sees through that. It's a very acquaintance to one-sided enemies to friends to lovers with daddy vibes between the two but they still have a lot of emotional healing to go through.
Here is where it may be triggering, not extremely so, but situations such as Izzy faced can be very relatable, (I know I related to them), can also be healing for others as he works through them. There are various ways to deal with the things, but I feel therapy helps the best and I'm glad that is brought up in the book as well.
A little more serious than the other books, it still has the same love and spiciness that the author is known for. Even with a touch starved young man who thinks he doesn't deserve love, and an older man, who's ready to show him that he deserves all the love in the world. Fortunately with the support of their friends, featured in the earlier books, they learn to work through any obstacles.
I'm so glad Izzy and Keegan got their own story. Everyone at Split Rock Ranch deserves love and happiness despite their past trials and tribulations. My Honest review is absolutely 5 ⭐ and look forward to read more of Rory's books!
Izzie and Keegan have known each other for five years, and Izzie believes they have hated each other the whole time. Keegan is the vet that cares for the animals at Split Rock Ranch, and Izzie is a ranch hand at the ranch, one who works with the horses. Izzie is a real mess, always looking to hook up, avoiding any real entanglements or chance of anyone getting close to him. Keegan is older, and he doesn’t hate Izzie, it’s just easier to avoid him as much as possible, since no matter what he says, Izzie turns it into a criticism of himself, so interactions are always tense. But Keegan knows there is something bothering him hidden deep inside Izzie which he protects fiercely at all times. Despite the obvious attraction to each other, it is constantly tamped down so the conflict is always there. When Izzie starts spiraling over frequent texts and phone calls, Keegan knows he needs to do something to help this man he has come to care for so deeply. Izzie has kept secrets and agonized over past events for years, finally getting to a breaking point and Keegan is determined to find a way to break through and fix what he can.
Lots of angst for Izzie with this one, a move from hate to love with a sensitive caring man, past events that linger and color Izzie’s whole approach to life and his sense of self, close and caring friends from the previous books, an intuitive dog named Riley, and the reappearance of an old friend that made for a tearful reunion (on my part) and helped Izzie find the peace and forgiveness he needed and deserved, all gave me a very satisfied feeling at the end of the book. Characters were very easy to get involved with, the world building for the ranch and surrounding area and the world that Izzie knew before helped with understanding where Izzie and his trauma came from, and the persistence of those who knew Izzie to help him get the closure he needed gave me a sense of completion in the best possible way for Izzie. A great addition to this compelling series with memorable and interesting characters.
I received an advance copy of this book and this is my voluntary review.
This is my first book by this author and I wasn’t disappointed with how this turned out. Granted I didn’t have any high expectations going into this. I’m glad it was a nice read.
This is a hate to love MM romance who two MCs who are both grumpy in their own rights. I believe Keegan was justified in his assumptions of Izzy and he wasn’t really far off with how he chose to keep Izzy at arms length. Although the further you read, you come to realise why Izzy is the way he is and why he seems to be on this path of self destruction.
I wished the author would’ve went into more detail with the mental health aspect instead of making it some sort of mystery and glossing over it. We didn’t really get much time in Izzy’s head to know what was going on there, there was more of tell on the aspect of his mental health and what happened, and barely any show. By the point we started seeing glimpses of how this affected Izzy we were almost done with the book and that was a miss with the whole hurt comfort aspect and mental health Rep because we didn’t really get the hurt comfort per se.
I loved Keegan and Izzy’s relationship. I loved the push and pull, love the man Keegan is. Loved how mature his character was and just how he handled things with Izzy. He gave Izzy space when it was warranted even though he felt uncomfortable doing so, but it was what Izzy wanted and he respected that. I loved that Keegan wasn’t an overbearing lover, and didn’t overwhelm Izzy with affection but instead he slowly eased Izzy into being affectionate and soon it became Izzy’s new norm.
I really loved seeing Izzy unravel for Keegan, telling him his truth, finding enough comfort with Keegan to finally be vulnerable with him. Overall these two made a beautiful couple and I loved their relationship. And I love Riley the dog. 🥰🥰
*I received a complimentary ARC copy of this book and this is my honest review.
MY OPINION: I hope Rory Maxwell keeps these books coming because I do love this series. There is a very good chance this one is my favorite. I like the stories that aren’t on the ranch itself, but coming back to the barn was nice. As always, we see all the characters from the previous books, and it's great to see how they are doing and how their lives are progressing. Regardless, I think you would find reading these out of order, or this title as a standalone.
The tropes we are dealing with here are mainly hurt/comfort and age gap. The gap isn’t addressed much beyond acknowledging its existence. It’s 10-12 years, which is good. Izzy is in his late twenties, while Keegan is nearly forty. Personally, I think this is the only way Izzy will be happy; he needs that maturity and control.
Keegan sees the man that Izzy is and is there for him. The two of them are certainly nudged by the split rock family, finding themselves working together more than they would want to. At least both of them recognize the attraction between them.
Throughout the book, we learn about the secrets Izzy has to deal with, bone-deep pain, and emotions that never really got to come out. Keegan is there for this man who gets under his skin. They find themselves unable to do anything but fall in love.
There is a lot of emotion here. Quiet support. Simple kindness. Doggos that are very good boys and girls. I love Izzy and his personality, even though he is ‘broken,’ but with Keegan, his pieces are held together. They find an HEA, and it feels victorious.
There is so much love, and A LOT of spice. Well, maybe not, but to me, it felt like a lot—no complaints either way. As I said before, this might be my favorite of the group, even though all of them are great. There are no new Daddy’s, but some other very eye-opening spicy moments.
Read this series, but this book. For me, Izzy is special.
Izzy & Keegan This book had me "all up in my feels" (not my favorite expression, but it works in this case🙃). Since we were only given bits and pieces of Izzy's past in the beginning, as his story emerges it evokes quite the range of emotions.
Izzy is an interesting character because he definitely presents himself as an over-sexualized sweetheart, but really the latter part is the only truth. He knows how to live his life, but he never understood that there was an actual issue with himself until Keegan was able to open him up. Keegan had his finger on Izzy's pulse for most of the book. He could see Izzy struggling and just had to figure out how to help, and not just in every intimate way possible.
Keegan struggled through his own feelings much of the book because while he never hated Izzy, he was always unsure where he stood with him because of the animosity Izzy showed him for so long. Once he understood where Izzy's issued stemmed, they were able to connect on a more even level and their relationship was able to take off and grow steadily from there.
I loved the evolution of their relationship as they each discovered more commonalities with one another. All couples/relationships in the Split Rock Ranch series have their quirks, kinks, and special issues, and Izzy & Keegan's story added another layer to that pile. I love the varying types of people/characters that Rory Maxwell writes. They all come across fascinating but relatable. As with any great series, I find myself wishing I could live in that storybook world and hoping that the stories never end.
The ending and epilogue of the book had me reading through non-stop blurry eyes. It wasn't an unexpected ending, but I still wasn't prepared for the intensity, however beautiful the sentiment.
Something Unavoidable is a fantastic book, and I loved diving into Izzy & Keegan's complex situation and relationship. They were fun characters to spend time with, while visiting all the other MCs in their element. You don't 'need' to read the books prior to this one to enjoy it, but it definitely helps fill out the story so you know who all is interacting.
I received an advance copy of this book and am volunteering my honest review.
I’ve been a fan of this series since the start and for a relatively new author I feel like Rory Maxwell has grown as an author with each book. I’ve always felt quite invested in these characters, but this is the first one where the back story of one character actually brought a tear to my eye while I was reading. This is Izzy & Keegan’s story, and a lot of the story focuses on Izzy and events in his past which explain his trust issues, need for affection and all the hook ups. The other main character is vet Keegan, who is older and more settled with his life. Despite being part of the same ranch/friend group, there is a bit of an enemies to lovers trope with them due to an incident/misunderstanding that happened when Izzy first came back to town. I liked the snarky banter between the two, which continued even when their relationship developed and Izzy’s bratty behaviour becomes a sign of his affection. There’s a lot to like about this series - the supporting characters, who are mostly main characters from the earlier books, the setting of the ranch and the plots of each story. The only thing that let it down slightly for me, is it feels like there are some jumps in the story - I won’t elaborate as it gives away some plot points but it almost feels like a chapter got cut that would have made the timeline of how things progressed between Izzy and Keegan seem a bit more natural. In the context of the earlier books I also have some continuity questions - but this might just be me not remembering details as it’s a while since I read them. If Izzy is from Split Rock, why is he treated more like a friend of Micah’s from uni than a long term town resident where everyone knows his Mum and Dad? But this doesn’t detract from the story for me, it just makes me have timeline questions re the whole series. I am looking forward to the next book and am excited to see more of Asher, Marco and Damion.
This was a strange story as Keegan saw what Izzy needed and gave him that as he helped him to sort out his problems. There's was a strange love that seemed to work. Lots of emotions and feelings in this story. This was an MM story with mature content.
This book is brings out so many intense emotions! Izzy's past and it's repercussions broke my heart!! His trauma, his guilt, his avoidance of dealing with it, caused him to be a reactionary person - he used alcohol and hookups as a way to get out of his head, and when that option wasn't available, he used anger. He was a dichotomy in his characteristics - fun loving and sassy or overflowing with anger and lashing out. His friends were amazing and tolerant of him, but getting worried. Keegan has his own anger issues, but they mainly come about from being overworked and just done with bad people doing horrific things. He works hard at his veterinary practice and volunteering to save abused animals, and it takes a toll. He is a very caring man when it comes to animals and the people who are close to him. Izzy and Keegan know how to push each other's buttons and frustrate the each other, but their interactions also betray an attraction that they try to dismiss. Giving in to their explosive chemistry is the start of a new dynamic for them, leading to genuine conversations, surprising revelations, and a true connection between them. Izzy has a lot to deal with and Keegan is the right man for the job. Their journey is intensely emotional and hard earned, but so worth the wait! There are also many great secondary characters that add depth to this story. It is a good read on its own, but is better to read the series in order so you can better understand those other characters and how they all interconnect.
I received an ARC from GRR, this review is my honest opinion.
I received a copy of this book for free for my honest opinion.
I really liked Izzy and Keegan’s story. It’s the 6th in the series and of the books that I’ve read, they just keep getting better.
We meet Izzy in book one and throughout the series is portrayed as a happy, flirty, good time guy. He doesn’t talk about his time before before the ranch, just that he has experience with horses.
Keegan is one of the town veterinarians and is friends with Ryan from book one. He’s none or be grumpy with humans but extremely good with the animals.
What I love about how Izzy is written is he uses his cheerful, flirty, outgoing, shameless personality as a crux to cover for a deeper trauma that he doesn’t want his friends to know about. Sometime when characters are portrayed that way it’s hard to have them do the 180 to give them more depth. That’s isn’t the case with Izzy, the author does a great job of easing us into Izzy’s issues, letting them come thru slowly. The reader is talked thru the panic attacks he suffers from while Izzy is thinking or living them, so we sometimes only realize he is having one at the same time Izzy does.
This is written as an enemies to lovers but in a way when I feel Keegan just wants to get along so he can do his job, yet cannot help sparring with Izzy since Izzy has a chip on his shoulder for Keegan for some reason.
Keegan sees so much more of Izzy than Izzy realizes, and he is exactly the man to help or just be there for him, help him move forward.
Plus lots of sexy times.
Really good series, I hope more people give it a chance.
SOMETHING UNAVOIDABLE is the sixth book in the Split Rock Ranch series, and the second I have read. You don't have to have read the others, but you might want to. I definitely do!
Izzy is a brat, pure and simple. He has his reasons, which come out in the book, but to say he was a troubled character to begin with is, I think, putting it mildly. Keegan is the vet who rubs Izzy the wrong way simply by existing. Keegan isn't a doormat though, and there's only so much he will take before pushing back.
This was not just snark, sass, and s3x, there was so much more to it, including grooming, gaslighting, and abused animals. And no, it's not all doom and gloom either. I loved the relationship Izzy and Keegan had, with all the banter and arguments that came with. At the end of the day, though, Keegan is the one Izzy ran to, and the one who helped put Izzy back together again.
I'm not usually a fan of bratty characters, but Izzy grew on me. And I loved how Keegan was with him. Tender and caring when needed, dominant when they both needed. I thought this was a great addition to the series, and look forward to reading more. Definitely recommended by me.

What a piece of work Izzy is! Beyond snarky, he lashes out with venom, even to his friends. They just accept Izzy as-is, and try not to react to his uber grouchiness.
Keegan is a ranch vet who specializes in horses. Apparently he also specializes in Izzy, seeing past Izzy's thorniness. He's smitten with Izzy, seeing and noticing Izzy for the first time.
The book is heavy on the BDSM Dom/sub scenes. Those are detailed so clearly, you can easily imagine it. So, you were warned. lol Also, the angst level is high. Izzy suffers from trauma and frequent panic attacks. There's also a scene with badly abused animals. You'll be horrified.
You'll come to love Riley. She's so smart and intuitive. With Riley, Keegan's other two dogs, Lucky and Chance, the dogs rule the roost. Beware Sunny, a rescue pony. The other characters are from the previous books in the series, so they are all supportive, wonderful, and very likeable.
I was enthralled by this story and I really enjoyed reading it. I recommend it.
I rather enjoyed this 'enemies-to-lovers' romance.
Izzy is the wild boy whose MO is 'a guy a day keeps anxiety away'. It is clear to everyone that Izzy is running himself into the ground and desperately needs help to tackle his attitude and fears from the past. Keegan is brilliantly cool, calm and collected (mostly😉). It's blooming amazing how he manages little by little to get under Izzy's skin, ground him and allow him to be himself.
Together they create a lot of chemistry, even though it expresses itself in acerbic verbal battles at the beginning. Tbh, I don't quite understand why Izzy 'hates' Keegan so much. Just because he made one condescending comment five years earlier? Izzy certainly knows how to hold a grudge!
I mostly enjoyed their power play with minor BDSM elements in the bedroom. There's no doubt about the amount of heat and sizzle between them, even if I'm unsure if 'anxiety treatment by sex' is a really good idea, but then, the author does explain why this is ok for Izzy.
I really adored the dogs in this story. Clever, intuitive Riley and stern half-wolf Chance made me grin and chuckle, ooooh and ahhh!
On the flip side, I was marginally confused by all the secondary characters (all the MCs from the previous books), but if you have read the series up to this point, you should be fine.
Izzy to others came across as loving his life, always up for a good time. He enjoyed everyone's company except Keegan. Something Keegan did really upset Izzy and Izzy never hid his distaste of him. This story just like Izzy's wall to protect himself takes time to tell. I really enjoyed that not know all the secrets at once and it did keep me wondering why Izzy disliked Keegan so much, even though they have had a connection from the moment they were introduced . Learning about a younger Izzy brough to light, a topic that has been in the news lately and was written with compassion that I just wanted to give Izzy a hug and was routing for him to get the love he deserved. Keegan was great for Izzy, he had a lot of patience and when Izzy bought up walls, he knew when to push to get Izzy to open up and a shout out to Riley, what an adorable dog. when they finally got together their relationship was on fire but also you could see how much Keegan and Izzy cared for each other. If real life had not got in the way I would have read this in one sitting as I was so engrossed in the story. catching up with the rest of the characters. This was a good addition to the Split Ranch series and I hope we get more especially a story about a certain artist
As much as the romance genre celebrates its tropes, how authors never hesitate to make those tropes serve their stories without losing the heart of what readers expect is one of my favorite things about the genre. Izzy and Keegan are never traditional enemies the way one might expect from an "enemies to lovers" story; however, Maxwell uses fantastic characterization to give them the same epic clashes and dramatic encounters that will clearly lead to something much more as the men finally see each other beyond the surface. This book can be read as a stand-alone, but I think the secondary characters shine better as a community if you've met them previously, allowing me to fully appreciate the support they provide for Izzy's mental health. Though Izzy undergoes the more dramatic journey in this book, Keegan's quieter arc is just as important and satisfying when the two men feel safe enough to accept the love that might be reluctantly offered but definitely feels unavoidable at the close of this lovely happily ever after.
Disclaimer: I received a digital review copy of this book from the author.
Firstly, let me say I got this book from gay romance reviews and this is me leaving my honest review. The old saying don’t judge a book by its cover that’s what I was left thinking about Izzy. When we have met him in previous books he always came over confident sassy and a player. I think we have felt the tension between Izzy and Keegan from the very first book. But we learn that Izzy had been through something when he was younger and he was still suffering with the guilt. Keegan and Izzy have got a pull push connection. And I’ve got to say I couldn’t put this book down. It wasn’t the book that I thought we were gonna get because I really did think that Izzy was this different person but really he was just masking the pain, and I’m glad that he found Keegan who was his supporter with his beautiful dog that became Izzy therapy Dog. Riley really knew when Izzy was gonna have a panic attack he knew when he needed to be there for him. The passion between these two is off the charts and even though Izzy tried to fight it in the beginning they have a deep connection and I just cannot wait to continue this series.
Izzy is the wild one but beneath that devil may care exterior is a load of hurt and issues that need a careful hand to help him navigate his way forward given the aftermath of trauma he continues to navigate. Izzy butts heads with Keegan, the grumpy veterinarian with a sweet side who just wants to work with his animals and hang with his dog. Keegan was not looking for a challenge, but working closely with Izzy helped Keegan see that he was worth the work and helped him manage Izzy's tendencies to push him away while Keegan was gently and firmly bringing Izzy closer so that they could work together on building the future. Their relationship takes time and patience to flower and it was so cool that the author wrote them as still a work in progress - it takes a long time to lower the walls that Izzy has built and for them to find their communication rhythm. By the end of the story they were in such a good place. So glad for them both! I received an ARC from GRR and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Ooooh Izzy and Keegan! This book says enemies to lovers, grumpy/sunshine on the tin.... and those things are in here, but it is so much more. It's about two folks with walls up, some internalized trauma and it's very real present day effects, and finding a space to be vulnerable.
Izzy has always been the spitfire wildcard of a side character, and delving into his 'whys' and trauma was handled gently, yet earnestly by Maxwell. I really appreciated the balance that was found between respecting those truths while still creating a spicy, enjoyable love story. Keegan is a grumpy softie of a vet and I just loved every second with him. Plus, he's got some adorable dogs?! Always a big green flag for me.
Due to some of the themes and issues in the book make sure to check the CW before diving in. I think you could read this book standalone and be okay, but you'll really get a fuller backstory if you've read them all.
This book hits hard. Rory Maxwell puts you through a wringer here. There is so much for Izzy to unpack about his past and to see how his behaviour is self-distructive.
I love the found family at Split Rock Ranch. Like in previous books, it's very much a story about re-discovering yourself and also trusting yourself.
Keegan does not want to be attracted to the mess Izzy is, unfortunately the chemistry between them says something different. They are explosive together.
It is quite hard to see how Izzy is tethering at the brink of panic attacks until he can't hold it anymore. The background of his story is actually very close to real live and some current scandals. But it's also great to see how Keegan is supporting him, not judging and helping him to see the truth behind Izzy's experiences.
I would have loved to see Izzy getting professional help outside the four legged variety (despite loving the way Riley adopted him).
I really enjoyed the entire Split Rock Ranch series, and look forward to any future books that may continue the series. Rory Maxwell's writing is terrific, and all of the characters are interesting people whom I enjoy spending time with on the page. Izzy and Keegan's story starts out as enemies to lovers, and their road is quite rocky at times. A couple of times I noticed an unexpected jump in the narrative, where I felt as if some additional context was missing. I appreciated how the author explored Izzy's relationship trauma / victimization, although it was difficult to read at times, and how he found healing through his relationships with Keegan and Riley. Their journey to their HEA was heartfelt and engaging. The intimate scenes in particular were very well written. Finally, eventing is my favorite horse sport, and I rode at the lowest levels when I was young, so I enjoyed reading a book that featured this wonderful sport.
