Amil learned what it was like to lose a lot at a young age. Life has given her every reason to turn cold, but her heart remains warm through it all. She sees the best in people who have nothing but bad intentions for her. Her personality is true to her nickname; Care Bear. Being soft in New Orleans is like waving a red flag in front of a bull. She’s the perfect prey for people who don’t have her best interest at heart. Sadly, we all know an Amil. A young, black girl growing up in an inner city who’s vulnerable and unprotected.
This book was good! Cion can tell a story with just the right amount of drama, toxicity, realistic aspects, and twists. I was engaged from the first page. I can’t wait for the second book!
The whole time I was reading this I really felt slimy pervy vibes from Terrel. In the back of my mind I was waiting for a complete violation. All in all, thos is all just a big misunderstanding but I have a feeling that things are going to get worse before they get better. Part 2 me please
One thing for sure and two things for certain, Cion Lee’s books are always going to have DRAMA and this book did not disappoint. Secrets usually have a way of making its way to the light and nobody learned that lesson better than Qaylo and Amil.
Qaylo and Amil truly loved each other, but they’re young, in love for the first time, lack emotional intelligence, and are codependent on each other. All of which is a recipe for disaster when it comes to a long-lasting and thriving relationship.
This book provides a great example of how family dysfunction can damage people and relationships, how hurt people, hurt people, how pride and ego can lead to the loss of relationships (familial, friendships, romantic, etc.), and how trying to get your lick back doesn’t tend to work out very well, especially when done from a place of raw emotions. There’s a lot of tragedy, hurt, poor decision-making, and hard lessons learned in this book.
Amil, unfortunately, is one of those individuals who learns a lot of lessons the hard way, and that tends to change a person. I am curious to see how it changes her in the next book. Yep! Cion left us with a to be continued 😩 She got me all emotionally invested in Amil and Qaylo and now I have to wait to see what happens next. Thanks, Miss Cion 😒
The reason for taking off half a star is due to grammatical issues such as misspelled words and incorrectly used words, peppered throughout the book.
Ok things that annoyed that didn’t have any to do with the story, the use of then when done should haven been used. Any maybe that’s how they actually speak out there but that got on my nerves. And the other grammatical errors. And I don’t mean the use of slang as I know this was a hood book.
Anyway I really liked Amil. I hated all the things she went through in life and hope she can provide a good life for herself and child. I wish the author didn’t ruin the relationship she ended up developing with her sister.
I liked Qay for the most part. I wish he was able to keep his dick in his pants or just ended it with Amil until her was mature enough to be faithful.
I appreciated how everyone stood up for their family and hope some relationships are mended. Looking for to jumping right in on book two.
The way Cion pulls you in with her realistic scenarios and characters, you become one with the book!!
Don’t have us waiting too long for the 2nd sequel to drop.
Your work is like a song you play on repeat!!
I don’t like giving anything away when I give reviews. Because you may like something I don’t and vise versa. If you like, young hood love, crazy relationships and drama, this is the book for you!! It kept me entertained with every page. Cion knows how to tell a story!! Patiently waiting for the sequel ❤️
This book was definitely top tier and I can’t wait for part two. Amil and Qaylo definitely had me on a roller coaster with their young love 💕 It definitely brought me back to another time period with the nostalgic moments of what it is to be young, free and in love while still trying to find yourselves with all the extra sad things you go through. I look forward to getting my hands 🙌🏾 on part two eagerly. Great Job Cion
I came here after being introduced to Qaylo in Campus Chronicles and was in for a ride.
Qaylo and Amil are young, inexperienced in love, and trying to make it. They both have had traumatic childhoods and find solace in each other. But life comes at them fast and they are both learning things the hard way which is frustrating, but it kept me engaged. This was a good read and I'm looking forward to seeing how their story plays out.
My first read by Cion Lee and the grit and grime of this tumultuous drama filled page turner is gripping. You'll be drawn in with so many secrets and lies of betrayal. Is Care Bear gone forever? Will Amil survive the tragedies of her last few months of high school? You want be disappointed.
I tell ya, the younguns bring all the drama. Immaturity and hot headedness is a lethal combination. I was happy to see Alivia and Amil get closer and I hope they can be close again. I love Qualo and Amil's love story. But that creep snake Tarell turns my stomach. I love stories like this though with strong family ties and ride or die friends.
growing up around this time, the songs, had me really enjoying this book.. the drama, the real life grit of this story had me into it! the ending had my heart broke, and now i’m curious to see what is going to happen next. Amil and Qaylo both young and in love, but Taquita and Tarell don’t trust them chileeee.. smh..
Honeyyyyyyyy, if this ain't some Jerry Springer ish, i'on know what is LOL. Tarell has to go. I never liked him since day 1. Granny Georgia sick, Alivia low key don't give a damn. QAYLO QAYLO QAYLO. You're getting that you deserve. I'm speechless and so glad Amil heard everything with her own ears because he did her dirty. I'll be back after part 2.
I can’t believe she did that to me! That she got me that invested, my feelings that involved! Just to turn around and do me like that! No nope I refuse to accept it where is part 2
Ummm I think I want everyone to be okay … this was crazy & emotional… therapy is needed for everyone! Just give me a happy ending with the leads okay Cion! Lol, but great book! Just fix it 😩
I was captivated immediately by the title and further entranced by the pages within. I have laughed, cried, and wanted to fight. The characters were relatable and I enjoyed the infusion of New Orleans vernacular and culture. Can't wait for part 2.
Lord knows this is some crazy stuff!! Please say it ain’t so!! Why in the world would he continue with that ole broad and why would she sell that ole man!! These some sick people preying on kids!!
This book was good but a lot to take in. Amil is too smart to be do dumb. That old man is about to take advantage of her. I can't wait to see if she bosses up or ends up like her mom.
