There are literally thousands of books on the subject of Jazz

This was one recommended to me by a professor and a performer at Appalachian State University

I stole this textbook from a roommate and read it cover to cover. It gave a wonderfully detailed history of this type of music and its many off-chutes. I found it extremely entertaining while reading it, but forgot almost everything I read the second I finished. And sadly I still can't distinguish bop, from cool, from third stream, from hard bop.
