MINISERIES PREMIERE THE NEXT CHAPTER OF THE COBRA THREAT BEGINS HERE.? James McCullen Destro XXIV is the man behind M.A.R.S. Industries, the undisputed leader in providing high-tech weapons to world powers…for the right price. But the emergence of Energon has changed everything. As Destro’s ambitions grow, the “Crimson Twins” Tomax and Xamot Paoli emerge to destroy their competition, and Cobra Commander realizes his current ally could be his future greatest enemy. Acclaimed writer DAN WATTERS (UNIVERSAL CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON LIVES!, Loki) and artist **ANDREI BRESSAN **(DARK RIDE, BIRTHRIGHT) change the balance of power in the Energon Universe forever.
Dan Watters is a UK based comic book writer. His first book, LIMBO, was released through Image Comics in 2016. He has since written THE SHADOW at Dynamite Comics, and ASSASSIN’S CREED and WOLFENSTEIN for Titan Comics.
Currently he is writing the relaunch of LUCIFER for Vertigo’s Sandman Universe, as well as DEEP ROOTS for Vault Comics. Deeply rooted in London Town, and firmly of the Devil's party.
"It would appear that I am at war." -- the closing dialogue of the grinning title character
Introductory / teaser issue of a forthcoming volume - due November 2024 - featuring the chrome-domed international heavy weapons supplier / manufacturer who often runs afoul of the heroic G.I. Joe special forces unit (although they don't make an appearance here), this brief and violent opening segment seems like a promising start. For fans of the old Marvel comics line and/or the mid-80's animated series this even features those creeptastic identical mercenary twins Tomax and Xamot, who still have that unsettling character tic of finishing each other's often-conceited proclamations.
I really enjoyed the storyline and the conversation between Cobra Commander and Destro. Considering this focuses on Destro who is an arms dealer, this is on the violent side. No cartoon laser beams here.
I like how Destro “communed” with his ancestors and I am looking forward to seeing what they told him.
4, anticipating the next volume, stars.

Dan Watters, Andrei Bressan, Adriano Lucas, & Rus Wooton kicked off the new Energon Universe limited series with a bang! The first issue drops us right into the action and Watters’ script doesn’t hold back. This was a fast-paced thrill ride from the first page to the last.
The highlight for me was how Watters wrote the dialogue between Destro & Cobra Commander. It’s perfectly captured, showcasing their complex dynamic & tenuous alliance. These two are going to be so much fun to watch together.
Bressan’s art is reminiscent of classic GI Joe comics, with awesome depictions of the action & character faces that convey a ton of emotion. For a man with a metal face, Destro’s reactions are so detailed & perfectly convey his reactions to certain situations. Bravo to Watters for letting Bressan’s art do a lot of heavy lifting in that area, rather than fill the pages with too many words. Lucas’ heavy red color palette adds to the intensity of the action & Wooton’s lettering keeps the text easy to read without taking away from the visuals.
One potential drawback is the sheer amount of new plot lines introduced. New readers may need to do some additional research to feel grounded in all the connections to G.I. Joe lore, but it’s well worth it.
Destro #1 is an action-packed, instant classic and a great start to the series. I’m eager to see where Watters and team take us from here, especially with how much this series appears to tie into the larger Energon Universe.
Unlike the Scarlett issue I read just before this I found this much more interesting. I feel like Destro is just going to be much more interesting compared to Scarlett based off this first issue. The little bit of stuff I’ve read by Dan Watters before this I liked so I have some hope that this will be a good miniseries in the end and this first issue was a good start.
Destro was always one of my favorites as a kid. His looks were radical and he was a total bad ass. This series does him justice. He’s a businessman working in the shadows supplying weapons. Totally relatable haha. I gave this four stars because while you see him scheming and planning, there isn’t a ton of character development. Interested to see where this goes
When I read G.I. Joe the voices of the Sunbow cartoon come back to life. Destro 1 is a great first issue in line with Duke, Cobra Commander and Scarlet. Skybound has once again hit it out of the park.
And Interesting. I am liking it so far. I didn't grow up with GI Joe, as I was born right at the end of that era, but here I am. Wishing I did get to see the original cartoons. This is really cool. I love it.
