Endgame

Rate this book
From the author's is all about endings and farewells, the closing of a chapter in my life, and a deeply haunting uncertainty of what comes next. I had dealt with my impending divorce previously, in my books Lost in the COVID Winter and Betamax, but now it was finally I was now divorced and staring down the barrel of the big Five-Oh.

There are many conflicting emotions when one experiences this, a sense of loss and loneliness, a nudging dread of time running out, of opportunities lost or wasted, yet also a sense of freedom, of new possibilities, of the dream of reinvention. The world has not ended, but remains as it was, waiting for you to discover its depths. A new energy crackles among the streets and color your dreams, even if your future remains deeply murky.

I think this album captures those many emotions. I continued to capture scenes and locations around Chicago throughout 2022, right up until Christmas, continuing to hone my skills, continuing to search for new discoveries, for those little landmarks that define a city, for those moments when people gather together.

The color design is very focused, almost exclusively painted with greens, reds, yellows and blues. I wanted something flat and direct, like broad brushstrokes, or the art designs of poster prints, comic books or Japanese anime.

And through it all, the steady gaze of a young woman, Anthony Lewellen’s “Lake View” mural. To me, she symbolizes my beloved college sweetheart Beth Ann. I am reminded of how inspiring she was, and haunted by the life that I could have lived. I speak to her as I pass and hope that she can hear me in the year 1993.

I hope you enjoy this album. Thank you very much.
