Michelangelo is living in Tokyo, where he's become a big TV star. It's a pretty cool life, full of fame and fortune, but if he's being honest, Mikey misses his brothers and the sense of purpose they had together. Well, in a classic case of "be careful what you wish for", that old life looks like it's coming to find him when ninjas show up in his apartment armed to the teeth! Continuing the all-new ongoing series from writer Jason Aaron (Action Comics, Thor), this time joined by Detective Comics and American Vampire artist Rafael Albuquerque, this spotlight story on everyone's favorite jokester puts the second piece of the puzzle together for the future of TMNT.

Jason Aaron grew up in a small town in Alabama. His cousin, Gustav Hasford, who wrote the semi-autobiographical novel The Short-Timers, on which the feature film Full Metal Jacket was based, was a large influence on Aaron. Aaron decided he wanted to write comics as a child, and though his father was skeptical when Aaron informed him of this aspiration, his mother took Aaron to drug stores, where he would purchase books from spinner racks, some of which he still owns today.

Aaron's career in comics began in 2001 when he won a Marvel Comics talent search contest with an eight-page Wolverine back-up story script. The story, which was published in Wolverine #175 (June 2002), gave him the opportunity to pitch subsequent ideas to editors.

In 2006, Aaron made a blind submission to DC/Vertigo, who published his first major work, the Vietnam War story The Other Side which was nominated for an Eisner Award for Best Miniseries, and which Aaron regards as the "second time" he broke into the industry.

Following this, Vertigo asked him to pitch other ideas, which led to the series Scalped, a creator-owned series set on the fictional Prairie Rose Indian Reservation and published by DC/Vertigo.

In 2007, Aaron wrote Ripclaw: Pilot Season for Top Cow Productions. Later that year, Marvel editor Axel Alonso, who was impressed by The Other Side and Scalped, hired Aaron to write issues of Wolverine, Black Panther and eventually, an extended run on Ghost Rider that began in April 2008. His continued work on Black Panther also included a tie-in to the company-wide crossover storyline along with a "Secret Invasion" with David Lapham in 2009.

In January 2008, he signed an exclusive contract with Marvel, though it would not affect his work on Scalped. Later that July, he wrote the Penguin issue of The Joker's Asylum.

After a 4-issue stint on Wolverine in 2007, Aaron returned to the character with the ongoing series Wolverine: Weapon X, launched to coincide with the feature film X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Aaron commented, "With Wolverine: Weapon X we'll be trying to mix things up like that from arc to arc, so the first arc is a typical sort of black ops story but the second arc will jump right into the middle of a completely different genre," In 2010, the series was relaunched once again as simply Wolverine. He followed this with his current run on Thor: God of Thunder.

Issue No.2 of the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Run by Jason Aaron aka Vol. 6. The Brothes are seperated and after Raphael in Issue 1 we visit Michelangelo in Tokyo. He became a big celebrity TV-Star, TV-Ninja at Day and Restaurant critique at night but although everyone believes to know him he is also alone. What about his brothers and the Foot Clan?
Still incredibly well drawn and still not sure where this will it lead to.

Not as strong as issue 1 but still great. Seeing Mikey become a TV star makes a ton of sense. Art is great. Can't wait for more.

In the second installment of IDW’s new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle series, Michelangelo gets the focus after his broth Raph took center stage in the debut issue. It’s not a spoiler (IDW revealed it in the issue’s solicitation) to say that Mikey’s new normal includes him having become a mega TV action star in Japan. On the surface it seems like the perfect fit for Michelangelo, the most outgoing and personable of the former Hamato clan. But what we actually see is that this life couldn’t be further from the ideal life Mikey would have chosen to lead. Aaron packs emotional punches throughout the issue with Mikey’s internal dialogue revealing how he’s really feeling.

I’m really enjoying the turtle-of-the-week approach to these first four issues. Jason Aaron has been able to give unique introductory tales after the Turtles’ world was turned upside down when the previous series ended. Nobody was the left the same and one of the standout aspects of these first two issues has been Aaron’s focus on how trauma has impacted the mental health of each turtle.

For a foursome with such different personalities as the Turtles, they share a common element of experiencing their own forms of physical and social trauma that wasn’t always explored beyond the plots where they were incurred. It will be interesting to see each character deals with their own issues and hopefully they can finally reunite because even though they don’t always want to admit it, they’re mentally, and physically, stronger as a unit than they are on their own.

Rafael Albuquerque and Marcelo Maiolo step in on art and color duties after Joelle Jones and Ronda Pattison nailed the first issue. Albuquerque & Maiolo provide visuals that play of Mikey’s gilded life well, with bright lights and flashes being used to provide a juxtaposition against the darkness of night when the issue takes place. The action is fluid and the character designs look great, but it all felt a tad hollow compared to the gritty tone of the first issue. Perhaps this was a specific decision for this issue to underscore how empty Mikey currently feels, but I suppose we will see how Albuquerque approaches future issues once he takes on full-time art duties starting in issue 5.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #2 closes with its last few pages tying it into the debut issue & sets the stage for what’s to come. Leonardo will get the spotlight in the next issue and I’m keen to see if Aaron will continue this trend of tying the stories together or if we’ll need to wait until these first four issues are complete for our first look at the series main plot thread. Even without that immediate common thread, these first two issues are still can’t miss issues that will serve as the foundation for all that is to come.

I love the art here. The writing and characterization is clearly influenced by The Last Ronin which is interesting to see in less dire circumstances. It worried me at first because I don't want writers to start making gritty Michelangelo the default, but that's not really what's happening here. Instead, what we're seeing is a sharp contrast between how Mikey sees himself and how he presents himself to the world; between his thoughts and his actions. I'm curious to see how this will play out when all four brothers are reunited.

Another 4.5 stars on this one, easily. That's two terrific issues to start this run, and I hope the third continues the trend, as Leonardo was my favorite of the four growing up.

Mikey is the least serious of all four from what I remember, but this was a more mature story for sure, not quite as dark as the first one, but close.

The art, the colors, the pacing, the action, the story, it all works in this one. Cowabunga!

First Ralph now Mikey, I’m loving how gritty this rendition of the turtles is. Mikey is a worldwide super star now, but what’s fame if you can’t enjoy it with the family and friends you love?

I got flashbacks to Johnny Cage during the fight scene here and it was pretty damn awesome, it was also nice to get a peek into Mikey’s mindset too as he is perhaps the turtle I’ve always felt the most distant from.

A really well executed book, a loved every panel, every word bubble. Jason Aaron clearly knows what he’s doing here. This book was beautifully done. I cannot sing the praises of this book enough, it felt fresh, new, different but familiar. Get this book.

Still loving the art, gritty individual stories, and mystery about how it started (and where it’s going!)! A slow build I can’t wait to see pay off.

Amazing art work like always! This book is about Mikey and what he’s been doing. But it takes a crazy turn at the end that will continue in book 3, about Leo.

Return to New York, Part Two
Super Mutant Turtle Power Go!

"You spend your whole life fighting ninjas who wanna kill you, it's hard to suddenly pull your punches, you know?" - Michelangelo of Clan Hamato

The story is still interesting with a bit of turtle action but it more so acts as introspection for Mikey and a degree of history for he and his brother's split. I'm not saying it won't work but I always enjoyed the playful, humorous side of the turtles, with slapstick violence, but the drama angle has been the main focus for quite some time now. Rafael Albuquerque's art is fair but celebrity Mikey and dinner jacket Mikey and leather jacket Mikey is kind of weird to see. Mutants in the sewer will always hold a fonder position in my heart. So far, each issue's artist does a cover version that has a cool theme between the two (Covers H and E, respectively) but they don't run consistently for someone who uses a subscription pull at the comic shop.

As the star of

#1, Raphael in Teenage Mutant Ninja Inmate
#2, Michelangelo in Super Mutant Turtle Power Go!
#3, Leonardo in The Way of the Ganges Mud Turtle
#4, Donatello in Grit & A Stick
#5, Heironymous Hale in The Law of the Foot
#6, Brothers Hamato in Four Busted Knuckles

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2024-) #2, Return to New York, Part Two: "Super Mutant Turtle Power Go!"

A solid follow up issue to the new TMNT run by Jason Aaron. Just as the first issue was Raph focused, this issue is centered on Mikey who now lives in Tokyo as a TV star given the relative fame the Turtles have gained in recent years. Now soft and content on his fame, Mikey lives the life of a celebrity and has hung up the nunchucks for good. But when a gang of ninja raid his penthouse suite, will Mikey still have it in him to win the fight all by himself?

It's an interesting counterbalance to the more recent stuff in The Last Ronin which spotlights a very different side of Michelangelo. There's a lot of small character stuff peppered in this issue that just works really well. And Raphael Albuquerque's contribution as the guest artist is very nice as well.
