Inspector Tomas Skender of the Balar Constabulary is hunting for the Tailor, a deranged serial murderer that stalks the cobbled streets. The killer’s latest display – a macabre creation of parts of victims sewn together – gives Skender new leads. Clues that will surely reveal the identity of this monster.
Welcome back to the cursed town of Balar where monsters lurk, and everyone harbours a dark secret. Not all is as it seems.
Thirteen interconnected short stories await the bravest readers.

Marcel M du Plessis is an author of literary fiction, horror, fantasy, and satire. He has worked as an editor, teacher, and content creator. He adores all things classical (music and movies) and all things nerdy (something with a controller or something with a set of dice). Good stories mean everything to him and he hopes to entertain and surprise you.
This is the second book in this horror series set in Balar, a mysterious town set somewhere in the Carpathian mountain range. In this book we get to revisit some old friends (?) and meet several new characters. In the first book, we are introduced to the town and its inhabitants through a series of interrelated short stories. In this book, these characters, old and new, are brought together to begin a more or less continuous narrative introducing one central mystery and many other side mysteries. As in the first book, there are many fresh takes on familiar monsters and themes, and Du Plessis manages to ratchet the suspense throughout the book, so that by the end I am left wanting more. I can’t wait for the next installment!
A huge thank you to Marcel du Plessis for giving me a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
I really hope this series continues because I NEED to know how this ends. Who is the Tailor, what happens to our brave detective, what was the Order etc.? I feel like the author made a very successful effort to give a more clear through line to the stories v. the first book, to the end that I truly care about our heros. Each story within the collection is unique and provides its own scare without being dull or repetitive.
Reading this has made me jump back into the first book, The Curse of Balar, to see what details I missed on my first reading.
If you're reading this, I sincerely recommend supporting Marcel by picking up a copy of the first book, and this one. I hope you'll find the pairing as addictive as I have.
This was such a perfect read for the spooky season! I’m a mood reader, so with the cold weather, rain, and gloom it was such a great setting for me to fully appreciate this book. I absolutely love Marcel’s writing style. He produces a gothic atmosphere with such psychological depth and creates vivid imagery to create suspense and emotional depth and have his reader’s lock in. He is very talented. I love how all these characters and stories interconnect and come together. You have to make sure you are paying attention otherwise you may miss something important. This is a series I would love to read over and over again to pick up on anything I may have missed the first time. There are so many layers and such depth. I loved seeing it all come together, and with the ending of Book 2 I can’t wait to see where Book 3 takes us. I highly recommend this series!
The author (Marcel M. du Plessis) has an Edgar Allen Poe-esque writing style that had me absolutely captivated! I loved reading through and piecing things together- can’t wait for the next book to see if my theories are correct! I wish I could write a review half as eloquent as this book/writing style, but I can’t use words right now 😂
