What I loved most about this slim, niche cookbook focused on tinned fish were Danny Miller's illustrations. He is the illustrator responsible for the adorable Fishwife product branding and packaging. As for the recipes, they are well-written and most are accompanied by a tasteful photo of the finished dish.

It is worth mentioning that this cookbook is also a very clever marketing ploy with the majority of recipes calling for Fishwife products. The back of book states right on it that it includes 77 recipes for transforming Fishwife's products into something tasty. Certainly, one can swap out the Fishwife product for another brand however, kudos is due to Fishwife for this brilliant marketing move. The book will definitely help expand their market as well as drive more people to try other types of tinned fish beyond the familiar canned tuna, and I am always a fan of expanding one's food horizons!.

My only issue, being Miss Pickypants after all, is I had hoped the book would offer a wider variety of types of tinned fish recipes. Almost 43% of the recipes involved smoked salmon (26 of 77) and tuna (7 of 77) and many were somewhat routine for these main ingredients. There were around 4 recipes using tinned fish not made by Fishwife (octopus, mussels and cockles) and these along with the remainder of recipes were a bit more inspired. Despite this small, niggling concern, it is a very good cookbook and would be prefect for anyone tinned-fish-curious or anyone seeking ways to enjoy tinned-fish besides straight from the can.

if you’re anything like me, you open the tinned fish and just eat it right out of the tin. while i would certainly recommend that, i wanted more ideas for how to incorporate tinned fish into actual meals and The Fishwife Cookbook delivered.

from simple quickies like Smoked Salmon Dip, Juicy Summer Tomatoes with Sardines, and Smoked Salmon Baguette to more involved meals like Risotto with Tinned Octopus, Potato and Anchovy Gratin, and Fisherman’s Stew, this cookbook offers a wide range of uses for that tin of fish that’s been sitting in your pantry.

there’s pastas, soups, handhelds, snacks, burgers, salads, breakfasts; meals on the lighter side and heartier comfort foods. and of course, it would be remiss of me not to mention the adorable little graphics splattered throughout that give this cookbook an incredibly unique look.

if you’re a tinned fish lover and looking for more ways to incorporate your fishy friends in to full meals, i would highly recommend this cookbook. if you’re a tinned fish skeptic, i would strongly urge you to step outside of your comfort zone and expand that palate!

personal favorite Fishwife tin offerings: smoked rainbow trout, slow smoked mackerel with chili flakes, sardines with preserved lemon 🐟🍋🌼🌶️

A beautiful cookbook full of amazing recipes! I've been a fan of Fishwife for a while now and when I heard they were making a cookbook I knew it was something I needed to get my hands on! I was lucky enough to get an ARC from Netgalley so I'll be satisfied until it comes out and I can get my hands on a physical copy.

This cookbook is broken up into different sections for different meals and events. Every chapter features beautiful illustrations in the fishwife art style and every recipe and a mouthwatering photo of that dish. I haven't tried all the recipes yet, but I did make the mac and cheese and let me tell you it was amazing! I for one can't wait for this cookbook to come out!

Thank you so much to Netgalley and Harvest for an eARC of this book in exchange for an honest review!

I'll give this one star more than it maybe deserves for the simple fact that these are the kind of cookbooks needed. Tinned fish is making a comeback, and what to do with them is a question for anyone tired of eating it straight. It's great budget food. But, and there is the but, this is a little too self-promotional for my tastes. I'm glad this company is reaching this specific audience, but there is a balance between wanting to promote your brand and wanting to actually promote a specific cooking ingredient, and it goes a little too far for the former. Given there aren't many other cookbooks like this one out right now, though, in this more modern era of tinned fish, it will get that extra star for now.

This isn't a cookbook for me, but will make a lovely gift for a friend who eats a lot of tinned fish, although not the Fishwife brand. The recipes look very flexible and adaptable to all sorts of canned fish.

I would have taken half a star off for the odd organization of recipes but rounded up. With chapters like "In Front of the Fireplace", "Summertime", "Late Night" and "A Meal for One", while entertaining, it is impossible to find a recipe for a certain type of fish, preparation type, or kind of finished dish. Say you want to find a recipe for that tin of smoked salmon you have. Or for a pasta dish or a salad. Where would you look? Also, any recipe that requires a food processor wouldn't fit into my chapter of "Just a Quickie". That would be reserved for putting a condiment and tinned fish on a cracker. (For which the book has some nice recipes for.) Thankfully, the book has a very comprehensive index to help.

Another great feature included--which all cookbooks should have--is a list of the recipes included in each chapter. That helps with the odd chapter titles. Each chapter also starts with a lovely illustration in the style of those on their tin boxes. Those illustrations are also used with recipe templates, like "Deep Dive - An Ode to Tinned Fish Chowder" and "Deep Dive - The Weeknight Tinned Fish Bowl" where general instructions are given on how to put together that type of dish using what you have on hand. These might be the most useful features to create a nice meal for when you have an assortment of ingredients on hand.

There are also beautiful photos of most of the finished dishes which is always a plus. This will make a nice gift; it's a beautiful and hopefully, useful to the recipient, cookbook.

My nuclear family was not a tinned fish family aside from the ubiquitous canned tuna fish. My mom grew up on the Gulf Coast of Texas and loved fishing and crabbing, so we frequently had fresh fish on the table for dinner. It wasn’t until I got to grad school that I met people who bought tinned fish other than tuna. I enjoyed it, but I didn’t really know what to do with it on my own. I was attracted to The Fishwife Cookbook by its colorful and happy cover. I am somewhat intimidated by tinned fish. I’ve enjoyed it when it’s been presented to me, but I’m never sure I’ll actually like it and I know I can’t eat a whole tin by myself. The thought of leftover tinned fish in my fridge does not appeal.

I liked The Fishwife Cookbook. It did the thing that I needed it to do. It gave me a wide range of recipes, plus a few guides on how to enjoy tinned fish without a recipe. It has given me the courage to strike out on my own in the world of preparing tinned fish. Having the company cookbook also made me more willing to spend the money on a few of their products. My favorite are the smoked salmons – original and with chili crisp. I really enjoyed the smoked salmon dip. It was quick, easy, and went well with veggies and potato chips. With a glass of crisp white wine, it made a nice dinner for one, and the leftovers held up well the next day. The smoked salmon with chili crisp isn’t terribly spicy, but it has a nice funk that paired well with rice and veggies for a rice bowl. The crispy potatoes on herbed yogurt with pickled onions and smoked trout was very tasty with my preferred combination of crunchy, creamy, funky and bright. The tonnato though, is the most likely to become a staple. It’s rich and unctuous, pairing well with roast veggies.

I really enjoyed exploring an area of food that I wasn’t familiar with. The cookbook is out in February.

I received this as an advance reader copy from William Morrow and NetGalley. My opinions are my own, freely and honestly given.

If the illustrations don't make you pick up this book, then you are crazy. This is one of the prettiest cookbooks I have ever seen. The illustrations are the best style and the photographs are gorgeous.
But those aren't the only great things about this book. There are so many special touches that make me keep coming back to it. The deep dive suggestions on making plates and pizzas really show how easy it is to mix tinned fish into your regular meal rotations. And not only that, but the recipes are so simple, in a perfect way. The ingredient list is full of easily accessible items, with an item list that is small. These can all be made very easily and quickly. Most of the recipes have photographs with them, or a little illustration to go along with the ingredients.
I love the chapter headings, like "In Front of the Fireplace" with their illustrations and quick description of the reason for these meals. There is a great mix of tinned fish flavors and uses. I love all of the ideas and inspiration and can't wait to keep making these recipes.

A clever fishy marketing tie-in…and also a good source of seafood recipes…

The Fishwife Cookbook: Delightful Tinned Fish Recipes for Every Occasion by Becca Millstein and Vilda Gonzalez is a quirky fun cookbook made by a company that also produced its own high quality canners seafood.

I figure became aware of this company due to a taproom carrying their products, so when I came across their cookbook, I had to check it out.

The cover art matches the style of their products and its spread throughout every section of the cookbook (along with some find food photos).

Most of the fare is light but their also have a few heavier dishes for if you’re really hungry.

Every dish includes a fishwife product as part of their recipe, whether something common like tuna or salmon to more exotic like octopus or anchovies. Naturally, if you don’t have access to fishwife brand seafood, then you can probably do more common canned fish in a pinch, but I discourage that.

Definitely worth giving a try if you like options for what to do with canned fish in your pantry…

The Fishwife Cookbook's illustrated cover, like the packaging on their tinned fish, absolutely stands out and catches your eye. There are illustrations throughout the book as well, keeping up the fun factor - especially the idea pages like for a summer picnic or a snack board.

As tinned fish has grown in popularity over the past several years, it's really nice to have a cookbook that give you ideas (and recipes) of how to enjoy them beyond opening the tin and eating with crackers as part of a snack plate. I particularly liked the olive oil fried bread recipe that I then topped with softened butter, radishes, and then draped over some tinned anchovies - yum! I have my eye on a salmon burger too.

This is clearly a niche cookbook, and fills the niche nicely.

Harvest books provided me with a copy of this cookbook; the opinions shared are my unbiased review.

I adored this book! It’s perfect for anyone looking to get creative with pantry staples or indulge in some fancy tinned fish. The ingredients were all refreshingly accessible—I never once thought, Gee, my grocery store won’t carry that, which is something I’ve run into with other cookbooks.

The illustrations were nostalgic and pleasantly colorful, adding to the book’s charm. I also loved the regional stories that accompanied some of the recipes—they gave the book a wonderful sense of atmosphere and history. I’ll definitely be trying out several of the dishes I discovered in these pages.

If you’ve ever struggled to find the perfect recipe for that lovely tin of sardines, look no further—your search ends here!

I had heard that Fishwife was doing a cookbook and I am here for it.

I love their colorful packaging and the book is just as colorful and whimsical.

I will eat every single one of these recipes. My Norwegian Grandmother introduced me to tinned fish and I’ve never looked back. The memories of my dad and I grabbing a few tins and a sleeve of crackers and headed to the beach to fish.

I am never without a few tins on the boat or kayak. They are just good straight out of the tin or all dressed up with some good sea salt, rye bread, olives and pickles.

Just looking at the cover makes me smile.

I must admit that this book was anchovy heavy, and for someone who's not a fan of anchovies, those recipes were a hard pass. However, I have 22 recipes I've noted and can't wait to try!
I love the idea of taking a pantry staple, tinned fish, and making it into something fancy, delectable, and more versatile than we realize and appreciate that the author stays reasonably true in regards to the ingredients which add to the authenticity respective of Southern/Southwestern Europe.
A note to simplify for others:
Crème fraîche is essentially the European equivalent of sour cream. There is no need to be afraid of an unfamiliar word. Same with the spices. Google and amazon can assist you with learning about and purchasing new spices.
Overall, I enjoyed this book and look forward to trying some of the recipes. (My fiancée, the genuine pig, however, is apprehensive, haha.) I think these would make lovely budget lunches for the office and nice refreshing summer dinners.

I'm already a Fishwife fan. I think the way the book is organized is not ideal. It's almost hard to follow? I guess because the recipe doesn't start with a photo, and some of them are just cute drawings. But I began by trying the szechwan smoked salmon udon. Only, it literally said it would be quick, easy ingredients you'd already have in a pantry. Not the case. For one, I dont eat peanuts usually so I just ignored that. I just used umami soup stock, sesame oil, and some soy sauce mixed with the tin fish sauce, with bamboo shoots and a hard boiled egg, and served that with seaweed. Thats just all I had. It tasted fine, but my partner did say it smelled bad. Can't wait to try other recipes.

I love how this book is set up. I also love how things come together so quickly with tinned fish. The recipes are easy to follow and have few ingredients which leads to the ease of making food. I particularly liked the meal for one chapter. The deep dive pages are my favorite in this book for bringing everything together. The Matcha Ochazuke with Smoked Salmon was mind blowing. The Foil Dinner with Chili Crisp Salmon was easy and the clean up was nonexistant.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an advance copy of this cookbook!

I don't know if I'm a tinned fish girlie - but this cookbook made me consider exploring tinned fish! Yes, the cookbook is going to give preference to the Fishwife brand - but that doesn't surprise me at all. The cookbook is extremely aesthetically pleasing, and I looooooved the illustrations.

Definitely recommend!

I received an e-copy of this book for free from NetGalley in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.

This cookbook is incredibly niche and weird, and the illustrations give me Strega Nona vibes, whom I would give my life for. So clearly I'm a fan. Do I buy tinned fish? Rarely. Have I heard of Fishwife? I don't think so. But I'm hooked 🤣

As someone with a previous aversion to tinned fish, I was skeptical at first about the nature of tinned fish alone, and further the potential to cook with it. I really loved the beginner approach the cookbook takes as it walks the reader through pantry curation and then some low life recipes to get started with these ingredients. Great gift!

The Fishwife Cookbook is a solid collection with some real standouts—the Martini, Savory Miso Oats, and Smoked Salmon Frittata are sure to be favorites. I did wish for more elevated recipes, as a lot felt pretty basic. That said, the photography is stunning, and I’m definitely getting myself a hardcover copy just for the pictures.

I mostly liked this book because all the recipes can be made with tinned fish which is pretty cheap. The recipes are pretty basic but with the addition of ~tinned fish~. It’s all around a nice summer recipes book with some fun additions like a super fishy martini and tinned cockle pasta.
