Cardinal Richard James Cushing (a.k.a. Richard Cardinal Cushing), Archbishop of the Diocese of Boston
Ordained a Roman Catholic priest on May 26, 1921. Appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Boston on June 10, 1939; Archbishop of Boston on September 25, 1944; and created a Cardinal on December 15, 1958.
Known for his support of ecumenism, the reforms instituted by the Second Vatican Council, civil rights, and assistance for the developmentally disabled.
He officiated at the weddning Mass of John F. Kennedy and Jaqueline Bouvier, presented the prayer invocation at Kennedy's presidential inauguration, and officiated at the Mass of Christian Burial for President Kennedy.
