Stimmen:

Thorsten Nesch, is one of the coolest writers we’ve had on our blog, “Grolar” By Thorsten Nesch was one of the most original books last year, and he’s back with: “School Shooter“. Yes, you can bet that this will be a great book. Why do we say this? Because, Thorsten Nesch is one of those writers that packs his books with original, wild, unexpected plots AND valuable content with depth.

With a surprising start, Thorsten Nesch catches our attention and kicks the plot onwards with our main character. The narrative of Thorsten Nesch moves from 1st to 3rd person perspective with ease, and we don’t notice until we stop to think about what happened. This fluid shift and the simple description of the scenarios create a cinematic feel to the reading experience.

Readers will love how fast the book moves and the feeling of progress you will get when the chapters speed by due to the narrative of Thorsten Nesch. He made the book easy to read, enhancing our urge to reading more, and faster, which is exactly what he wants, because the tension rises by the paragraph. Very nice.

The emotions, perceptions, motivations and internal struggles of characters have depth and add weight to the story. It’s amazing how easy Thorsten Nesch can make the book interesting by showing what characters are thinking and feeling in that split second, and explain their background with so few words!

The characters’ unique approaches to the situation of crisis feels real. This allows us readers to identify more with one character or the other. The author also uses characters to show stark emotional differences between genres. It’s interesting to see how he can do it with subtlety and make it believable and clear.

Although the book is suspenseful, there humor from characters that fit their ages applied with logic and wit.

We love how the author let characters debate possible reasons why there are school shootings and try to make sense of it all within themselves.

After a while you realize the intentions of the author with this book. To show the uncertainty that “survivors” of a shooting have when trapped and how important it is sometimes to stay put. He also takes the chance to go into the thought processes of teens and kids, and how they process the whole situation emotionally.

The author, we assume, shows how poorly these situations are handled by the authorities, parents, and “higher ups”. It’s fascinating how “oblivious” most people want to be when things like this happen. There’s an important mention, of how the police is ready to intervene when it comes to small crimes but not so much in the big ones.

This book is interesting, and orders a deep reflection upon society and the standards of courage and integrity in our days. The lack of caring in people in general, and specially on our homes which creates criminals.

This story is a critical piece of work that everyone should read and reflect upon the depth of it. Excellent job by Thorsten Nesch. Grab your book and be intrigued by the social commentaries, that are brilliant, inside this novel. This is a valuable read with great plot-twist in the end, so grab your copy of “School Shooter” now and enjoy.

Pros:
Incredible way to address school shootings and the social causes of it without blaming
Incredible philosophical depth with an emotional touch to it
Perfect narrative and pace that rises and steadies itself when needed
GREAT ending, with an incredible plot twist and deep emotional messages in the end that made the entire read worth it
Great suspense scenes and build-ups that lead to thrilling scenes
Realistic characters with diverse personalities and depth

Cons:
The book could have moved a little faster in some parts

Lesson of the book: “Hugs save lives”

Favorite Character: Nina

Cover Score: 8.0/10

Book score: 8.4/10

‘With a sudden crack the intercom goes dead’ – experiencing tragedy and reacting!

Canadian author Thorsten Nesch is a celebrated German Young Adult novelist whose career advances include literary arts grants and writer’s residencies in Denmark and Germany, and he has been engaged for live readings in many countries at schools, universities, book fairs and other locations. His books, in English, include THE LOCOMOTIVE, THE TIME TRAVELLER, LET’S ROB THE COPS, FOR A SPIN, I AM YOU AM I, GROLAR, and SCHOOL SHOOTER – translated from the German by Heidi Goertz.

Though Nesch published this book in 2013, the past two years’ multiple tragedies of school shootings make this book even more relevant today. The content of the novel is, appropriately terrifying, but the author’s ability to create atmospheres of both horror and beauty is evident as he opens his story – ‘ 9:10 AM It only takes eight minutes and nineteen seconds for light rays from the sun to reach the earth. As the sun shines through the oak canopy, the green leaves stand out against the cloudless sky, and tied white Reebok sneakers dangle from a branch, turning in the soft wind. A sparrow lands on the laces and picks at the strings with its beak. Realizing this isn’t food, it looks around, sings a melody and flies down to the gum-laden sidewalk. The sparrow begins pecking at pieces of plastic that lie scattered on the pavement. A late student startles the bird. It flies away. The young man deeply inhales the smoke from his last cigarette and throws the smoldering butt on the gravel next to the sidewalk…’ And from this dreamlike quality of scene painting, the student enters the hallway of the school, greeted by the sound of a gunshot – and the story leaps forward.

That terrifyingly realistic opening marks the beginning of this tale of horror. Or as Thorsten supplies a view of the plot, ‘During a school shooting six highschool kids flee into the library of their school and barricade themselves, but it turns out one of them is the shooter ...’ Delivering his story in a minute by minute manner enhances the immediacy and impact.

The book is described as being a Children’s Violence Book, and the writing is straightforward and easy to read, so that description can be accurate. The content, however, creates an impact about events and possibilities today, and in that vein, this is a book that should be read by adult audiences, with the hope that such tragedies can be better understood and prevented. Excellent writing - Thorsten Nesch proves, here, that his talent is solid – wherever he chooses to write! Recommended.

The Review

For so many reasons, this was one of the more difficult novels I’ve read in recent months. The fear and anxiety that one can only imagine experiencing as a student stuck in such a life or death situation are captured here in the author’s work. The chilling nature of the atmosphere the author crafts really pulls readers into the narrative, while the character development was rich and well developed, with each character or “suspect” in the thriller adding depth and emotions into the narrative as readers try to figure out who is behind the heinous crime.

The theme and message of this narrative were no doubt the heart of the novel. The horrors of school shootings are something that has become more and more prevalent in recent years, and the emotional way the news hits so many of us as children become targets in places that should be a safe haven made this story feel monumentally more important now than ever before. The examination of how students interact with one another, the need for better mental health and social services to help students and end instances of bullying, and of course the terrible way gun laws enable people to access weapons that have no business accessing them, are all felt heavy as the narrative progresses.

The Verdict

Haunting, emotional, and thought-provoking, author Thorsten Nesch’s “School Shooter” is an important and memorable read for those who want a balance of thriller fiction with discussions around how students are cared for and how to best utilize gun control laws to end the frequency of these shootings. The author's ability to bring readers into the narrative and feel the pressure and emergency of the situation the novel presents will have readers invested in this narrative heavily.
