In fact, she wants everything.

The Honey Trap – the gripping psychological thriller by the best-selling author of The Stepfather and The Scorned Wife.
Chris is a down on his luck and disgraced psychiatric nurse. As fate would have it, he comes across a billionaire neurotic artist, Perry, when he is in the middle of a mental episode and helps him through it. He then receives a job offer to come live with Perry and join his healthcare team as a live-in nurse, which could help turn Chris's life around. But there are secrets Chris is keeping and temptations he must avoid. Especially when his employer's much younger, sexy trophy wife Kara starts to proposition him, not just for an affair, but for murder of her husband. Chris has a new beginning, and he really likes the friendship he has developed with Perry, but he also thinks he's fallen for Kara and must decide how far he's willing to go for love.
This was a psychological thriller with twists and turns in the story. Without giving anything away, I was able to deduct what was going on pretty early on in the story from the clues the author gave throughout, so it wasn't much of a surprise ending to me. It was still an entertaining story. Chris is a well written character, and Kara is exactly how you think she would be, but for how neurotic Perry was supposed to be, I had trouble believing his character at times. The author did a good job setting the scenes, and the internal dialog of Chris was helpful by giving more clues to what was about to happen. I would check out another story written by Theo Baxter.
I have become a huge fan of Theo’s and this book was good! I did feel that it lost its way a little bit in the middle. But we needed to see this conflict with Chris.
What a little twisted story this was. Not as in twists and turns but one person’s twisted behaviour.
I liked Chris until I didn't and then I did again. Kara was vile and Perry was just a kind trusting man. I guessed how the prologue fitted in but I still had surprises thrown at me. Some felt like they were added for effect and not sure how they realistic it would be but it added to the story and that’s all that matters isn’t it?
Great to see another book added to Theo’s catalogue of messed-up characters. I also loved the fact this was told from a male perspective which is unusual for Theo’s books. So I enjoyed seeing the female as the spider and the man drawn into the web from the man's point of view.
My review Chris is down on his luck. He was a part of the medical staff, but that quickly changed once he made a mistake and killed someone by being too tired to pay attention one night On Chris's way to nowhere, he discovers a man off the highway. This gentleman Perry is having an anxiety attack. His car has broken down. Chris provides aid and helps to calm the gentleman down. After dropping Perry home, Perry offers him a job as an live in aide Chris accepts. Perry has a wife who is way younger than him and also a knockout. She is also bad news! She begins to flirt with Chris every chance she gets. Chris knows this is wrong but somehow begins to see himself with Kara although she belongs to Perry Flirting turns into Kara, meeting Chris in his lodge in the back of the house, and eventually, they make love every night This is certainly not a good thing. Kara now is whispering that perhaps if Perry was no longer in the picture, perhaps if maybe too much medication was given to Perry and something would happen to him, then of course she and Chris could be together Is Chris this naive. Is he being used. Will he do the right thing, or will he fall into this bee's trap All sweets aren't food to eat, and perhaps you should be mindful of the hand that feeds you
Thanks to NetGalley for this ARC. Theo is now one of my go to authors! He has an easy writing style, and his books are just fun to read. This book has a little of everything from greed, manipulation to murderous intent. I was happy that this down and out protagonist had found a new job after his checkered past! But then he has to ruin it via an affair with his boss’s wife! The pace really picks up when she wants the ultimate-murder!
2.5 ⭐️ Decent, predictable, quick read. Even though I figured it out, some little hint things still made me want to continue reading because I might be wrong. I wasn’t.
I devoured this book in one sitting....wow loved tge plans, the manipulation, the outcome. Bravo couldn't have asked for anything better. Best book I've read in awhile.
Thanks to the author, the publisher and Netgalley for an early release of this book.
When pyschologist Chris helps a man called Perry, he is offered a job he cannot refuse. Then he meets Perry's wife, Kara, and they start an affair.
Things take a drastic turn when Kara tells Chris that she wants Perry dead so she can get her life back.
I'm a fan of Theo Baxter for the suspense he creates with really unlikeable characters. This was another of those, but it did fall a bit flat in the middle.
Kara was just a really awful person - only bothered about herself and her own personal gain. I felt really sorry for Perry. Chris was a strange one - at points I didn't like him and then others I did.
I flew through the last part of the book, with the twists that I didn't see coming and then wanting to know if Kara would be caught. I had guessed part of what was going on, but hadn't figured out how it had been put in place.
The name and the cover caught my attention while I was scrolling around on NetGalley to find a new read. This didn't turn out to be what I was looking for. With a title like that I was expecting a character with a seductive nature, a more matured lady with some experience to share with her 'victim'. Instead, we were presented with a 20 something brat that was supposed to convince me that she was a master planner that could pull off a murder. Just no... The male character clearly had been having a tough life and then stepped into a crazy situation, which he willingly stepped into, so I didn't feel much sympathy for him throughout the book as soon as it was revealed. The whole plot and twist was given away in the first chapter and it wasn't hard to put two and two together, the in-between details were provided as the book went on and the story felt flat. The one person I felt anything for and the most sympathy was Perry who was misused and mistreated by the people in his life. The title kind of makes sense when you know what the twist is in the book, but it's definitely a little misleading going in.
The Honey Trap is a psychological thriller with twists that will keep you engaged until the very end.
Chris Abram’s is having a rough time. Recently divorced and unemployed, he moves to a small town to work at a boarding school, only to discover upon arrival, that the job no longer exists. Now he’s homeless, jobless, and his only choice is to return home to his sister and rely on her generosity. When a chance encounter with a stranded and confused motorist turns into a job, he can’t believe his luck. Perry Bryant is an eccentric millionaire with some mental health issues. When he meets Chris, he likes him so much that he hires him as part of his medical team.
Kara Bryant is Perry’s much younger, and extremely hot wife. Unfortunately she’s also bored and sees Chris as her next diversion. Chris is thrilled with his dream job, until he starts seeing the way Perry acts with his wife, seemingly becoming a different and abusive man in an instant. As Chris is more drawn to this beautiful woman that is everything he has ever dreamed of, he puts his moral issues to the side and begins a torrid affair.
But will this hot romance lead to murder? How can he harm someone he really likes? Just how far will Perry go to make Kara happy? And will the secret Chris is keeping about his past, become his undoing now?
I enjoyed the storyline, especially the twists. I became invested in Chris and wanted to see just how far he would go to get his deepest desires. I liked the character development, including the other staff members. I was definitely drawn in and once the action picked up, I had a hard time putting this down. The middle of the book dragged a bit, but once it picked up again, it was hard to walk away from. I liked the writing style, finding it easy to read. Fans of Freida McFadden, Nicole Trope, and Kiersten Modglin will love the twists and turns.
Definitely a great read. I will be adding Theo Baxter to my must read lists.
Chris has a chance encounter with millionaire Perry Bryant and Perry offers Chris a job being his “personal mental health caretaker”. It’s a perfect job with one distraction – Perry’s beautiful wife, Kara. Soon they develop feelings for one another, and Kara soon has a small suggestion – kill Perry for her. Will he do it for love? I had previously read Not My Mother and The Lake House by Theo Baxter and thoroughly enjoyed them, so I was thrilled to get this book! It started out slowly, and then I almost didn’t finish the book. Christ was such a sucker and so easily manipulated by Kara, it was laughable. As I read on, I was hooked and wanted to see how it ended, and it did not disappoint! The twist at the end was a complete surprise, and I ended up loving this book! #NetGalley #Theo Baxter #InkubatorBooks #TheHoneyTrap
I really enjoyed this novel as it deals with a twisted story of appearance vs. reality! When Chris, who's been living in his car, takes a chance and helps stranded motorist Perry, Perry takes him home to his mansion and promptly offers him a job as he's neurodivergent and often has panic attacks and anxiety. What luck for Chris...until he meets Perry's gorgeous wife, Kara who promptly seduces him...and we're off! It's a wonderfully convoluted plot that has us constantly wondering who the "bad" guy is as everyone seems to want something! Had me gasping up until the bitter end! Thanks to NetGalley for this ARC!
Thank you Netgalley for a copy in exchange for an honest review!
I really liked this book. It had me intrigued from the start! I loved the mental health aspect and representation of neurodivergence. I loved Chris's character and thought he was the best portrayed in the book. This was a thrilling page turner, I kept second guessing my thoughts with each chapter. This was a great quick read!
"It's not everyday that you help someone with car trouble and get a job because of it"
This story seemed pretty predictable in most aspects including plot twists but overall it was engaging enough that I wanted to find out how it all worked out in the end. If you’re newer to the thriller genre I think this book would be a great one to try!
This book was so good! I read it so quickly. To quickly summarize, Perry is an artist who suffers from a few disorders. He is very successful and supports a much younger and beautiful wife. One day he has an anxiety attack in the side of the road and Chris comes along and helps him out. Now, because of that good deed, and his medical history, he accepts a live in job for Perry. Perry’s wife seems to be attracted to Chris and him to her. He tells him not to fall for her. But he doesn’t and it goes from bad to worse. I thought I had everything figured out and while some of it I did , the major plot twist got me! Baxter did an amazing job writing these characters. I could even imagine the staff at the house. He also did a great job making you like/dislike characters. The internal dialog that Chris has is also very helpful for hinting and understanding what will happen. This is the first from this author (3rd 5 star book from this publisher) and won’t be the last!
I liked the storyline and the writing style flowed well. Something about the book didn’t have me hooked however I still enjoyed it and loved the ending.
The Honey Trap by Theo Baxter Rating: 4/5 Release Date: 30 June 2024
Kara is resolute in her desire—to become a widow.
To Chris Abrams, Kara Bryant embodies everything he desires: passion, beauty, intelligence. Yet, she's married to his boss.
When millionaire Perry Bryant offers psychologist Chris a role in his healthcare team, it appears to be the perfect opportunity for Chris to leave behind his past mistakes and begin anew.
But then he encounters Perry's wife, Kara, who leaves him breathless. It soon becomes evident that she desires him as intensely as he desires her, and more—much more.
In fact, Kara wants everything.
She proposes a sinister request: to assist her in her husband's demise. Despite his reservations, Chris finds himself succumbing to Kara's allure, prompting him to question everything—his friendship with Perry, his sense of loyalty, and even his own moral compass.
As a newcomer to Theo Baxter's work, I found myself pleasantly surprised. While the novel initially took its time to build momentum, I entertained the thought of setting it aside for later. However, I'm glad I stuck with it.
The characters were finely crafted, and the plot unfolded smoothly. I'll definitely be keeping an eye out for more from this author in the future. Overall, a well-written story with a solid and engaging plot.
Thank you so much to NetGalley, Inkubator Books and the author, Theo Baxter, for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest and fair review.
I can’t resist reading this authors books, I can never fault him. Every book is a different story yet every single time he manages to completely shock me. I must admit, I really love the stalker, bunny boiler type of thrillers from Theo. He writes magically, he has a way of getting you stuck in that moment and you can’t breathe, then bang! This was a slightly different book, he was brave with certain aspects of life. He definitely pulled it off in my opinion, a smashing book.
As you know, I have a good collection of books by this author now and I'm yet to be disappointed by one! I always jump right in because I know I'm going to get a great read! The Honey Trap is yet another classic psychological thriller which had me hooked from the start!
When we meet the characters, Chris and Perry meet in such an unusual way and their connection grows swiftly. I think from that point, I knew that this was going to be a unique one. Millionaire Perry, hires Chris to be part of his staff and things look like they're going to improve for Chris after an incident ruined his career as a mental health nurse. The only problem is Perry's wife, Kara....
I love Theo's writing style. This is quite a classic theme - millionaire husband, younger wife. She wants his money and grows impatient. But the setting, characters and hotline always makes for a read that's anything but classic. I love the moral dilemmas that are created here and, especially when dealing with mental health issues, I liked that this kept the narrative current.
This is again a fast-paced read with lots of twists. The ending caught me by surprise, although I definitely should have suspected something!
Another great book to add to my growing collection by Baxter and I can't wait for my next one....
When down on his luck Chris Abrams meets Perry Bryant it’s the perfect opportunity to forget the past he’s running from. Disgraced by the medical fraternity, psychologist Chris becomes part of Perry’s medical team. But when he meets Perry’s wife it soon becomes one’s clear exactly what she’s after. For much of the book although I did feel sorry for Chris, I also found him quite gullible and easily swayed but the more I read, the stronger he seemed to become. Perry was a great character and I found myself empathising with him a lot of the time. But the main person I loved to hate was Kara. Manipulative and self-cantered, I could barely believe the lengths she would go to get what she wants. There were plenty of twists and I found it was impossible to put the book down until I found out what happened to all three characters. The Honey Trap is another brilliant book by this amazing author. And if you haven’t read anything by Theo Baxter yet, then why not?
Okay, if you are after a character who you can scream and cuss at, Kara is your gal! I think she is now my most love to hate character ever! Awful but so fantastic to follow.
This is such a tense read, it made me think about each character and who was to be trusted or not! The actions of some are unbelievable and I wonder if Chris is the most gullible person ever!
The twists were so exciting to follow as they unraveled and I know have a new author to binge.
I found this plot fascinating! There were such excellent characters and I trusted none of them - in fact I developed quite the hatred of Kara as the book went on. I really enjoyed reading this one and found it hard to put down as I needed to know what was going to happen next! There was part of being that wanted the ending to be slightly different but it didn’t take away from my enjoyment. I have read others by this author and this joins the long list of ones I’ve enjoyed!
The last 15 pages changed my review from a 2/5 to a 4/5! Let me explain - I was consistently annoyed with every character except Perry! Perry is definitely an interesting character both in personality and medically speaking. While he is seemingly difficult, he is aware of this and has tried to make accommodations to deal with these issues. I was definitely concerned that Chris, and everyone else, would take advantage of Perry without him realizing it. I was annoyed with Chris, Kara and Morrie, all for different reasons! First up, Chris. I wanted to believe in Chris as a good guy who just made a mistake. Nurses make mistakes and he just happened to make a mistake on a patient whose family had the resources to ruin his career. I wanted to believe in him, but after falling for Kara’s manipulation I was so frustrated with him! It seemed obvious from the beginning that Kara was a gold digger, a liar and master manipulator. As a psych nurse, he should’ve recognized these signs immediately and not allowed himself to fall into her trap! I spent the majority of the book just balking at his ignorance!
Again with Kara, she is the WORST. obviously only married to Perry for his money, she doesn’t even try to hide her distain while happily spending all of his money. Her behavior is all over the place, from sweet to enraged to seductive in a minutes notice. The ending was so satisfying for a character who was just a straight bitch. What an evil person to use someone’s difficulties (autism, panic disorder) against them.
Morrie was just frustrating but not nearly as bad as the other characters. He is “old school” in his treatment of Perry, telling him to get over himself and deal with his anxiety. Chris was much better in calming Perry and speaking to him in a therapeutic but respectful manner. He clearly only cared about money and was not shy about saying that. Instead of being glad his patient was receiving great care from Chris and his mental status was improving, he felt threatened that Chris’s presents would cut his hours. Glad he only was present for a little bit of the book!!
Spoilers below! 👇🏼👇🏼👇🏼
Damn the ending really shocked me. I honestly didn’t expect Perry to be alive and well much less that he and Chris planned Kara’s demise! Everything made SO much sense after finding out Chris was working with the police while Perry pretended to be unresponsive. I continually wondered how Chris planned to record Kara’s confession without incriminating himself. If he recorded her then took it to the police, what would stop them from charging him with attempted murder as well considering he gave Perry the meds? This finally made sense when we find out Perry isn’t actually brain dead! What a shock. I loved it. I loved the way they got revenge on Kara and stopped her from doing this to anyone else. It was obvious she felt no remorse and would do whatever she had to get what she wanted. A great twist!!
Here is my review for The Honey Trap by Theo Baxter
This is an intriguing read but I managed to get into the book straight away from the start. It’s an interesting story about Chris, an out of work psychiatric nurse or psychologist, used to working as part of a team but lost his licence in Nebraska when a girl died because he was drunk on the job. He couldn’t get a job anywhere local so went to New York but the school had been closed down for abuse so he lived in his car for three months trying not to get caught by the police. One day he came across a motorist who had broken down but was in the middle of an anxiety attack. Chris found his pills and managed to talk him out of it and took him home. He offered the job to Chris that evening and it came with live-in accommodation. Perry had a lovely wife, Kara, who Chris tried his hardest not to fancy but it didn’t work and it turned out, she fancied him too. She wanted them to have an affair but Chris was worried about Perry finding out and what it would do to him. The staff then witnessed a really bad fight between Perry and Kara over a dropped crystal glass which was irreplaceable so Chris ended up going after Kara and talking to her. He found she never really loved Perry, just his money and the freedom of never working for anything. Will Chris give into her demands? Morrie warned him off and Chris is worried about losing his job if ever found out. It’s a good psychological thriller and will keep you guessing. It's a bit of a page turner as you want to know what happened next. The plotting is brilliant and the writing is superb. Theo Baxter writes some brilliant psychological thrillers and they are worth reading.

I was interested in this book the moment I read what it was about. I enjoy a good crime novel that puts you right in the middle of the incident. However, I expected more from this...
First of all, the main character being down on his luck and helping some random person on the side of the road who just happens to give him a job, is the most random and unlikely thing ever. I will give props to originality though. The way the wife, Kara, acted even without knowing her husband had "issues" is a huge red flag. But then for her to instantly come onto Chris and talk him into killing her husband, how could he not have seen that she is a walking hazard..? Parts like that, in the writing is what makes the story somewhat difficult to keep reading. I was just annoyed that the main character didn't see what she was doing right in front of his face.. I get that it is a story, but it is supposed to be a suspense thriller.. it did not follow through.
Near the end, there is a comment made by the cops about how "this is all part of the plan" and I was suddenly back pedaling.. what plan? This was not mentioned at all previously, other than the Prologue, but I feel like that should have been left out. Leave the reveal that they are in on the whole thing until close to the end when they grab the wire from him. That would have been a bit better, because Kara had just confessed to everything in the most perfect way!
I do think that the end was dragged out a little bit too long... She was arrested, Perry had a talk with Chris and his work carried on.. then maybe an epilogue of the trial and how that goes down. Then you wouldn't need all the extra fluff in between that was boring to read, it had no impact on the story.
Overall, it is an okay book. I do think that Theo Baxter is an author who is good for the Young Adult category and creates easy to read books stepping into the Thriller suspense drama, without having details that would scare readers off.
How far are you willing to go for love? Would you kill someone just to prove that you love me? Let's see how far Chris is willing to go shall we?
In this book Chris Abrams is hired as an in-house nurse to help take care of Perry Bryant. He used to be a practicing psychologist until he gave the wrong medication to a young girl, and she passed away, so he saw this job as a second chance to prove himself. His job will be to issue his medication or talk him through a panic attack or just to talk to him in general and discuss any problems he might have. Occasionally they go on business trips. They also have another nurse to help Morrie, but he is an older man. While Chris lives on the estate Morrie goes home when not on duty. The only other person living in the house other than the cook and maid is Kara the young wife to Perry and she is gorgeous. She talks to Chris too, but it is probably out of boredom.
Chris takes daily walks around the estate and sometimes Perry joins him when he is not painting. Perry is not only a billionaire, but he is a painter as well. Occasionally Kara will join him when she is not shopping or getting her hair or nails done. It was on one of these rare walks that they ended up in the boathouse and Kara seduced Chris. Of course, it did not take too much convincing as she was everything he had ever wanted. And the affair begins. This continues until one day she asks Chris to help her kill her husband. She has it all planned out all he has to do is follow her instructions. Will he, do it?
I got this book from BookSprout and will be happy to leave my review.

I have read all his books and have not been disappointed by any of them. If you like an excellent thriller with a terrific twist, I can't recommend Theo Baxter more. I want to thank publishers Inkubator Books, author Theo Baxter, and Zooloos Book Tours for sending me a copy to read and review.
Thank you to Netgalley, the author, and their publishers for sending this book to me for free in exchange for an honest review.
I went in blind (aka my ADHD erased the blurb from my brain) and I think it was better that way. I kind of knew where it was going based on the character interactions but it was fun to ride that tension until it was said out loud. So, if you haven't read the blurb yet, don't do it and try to go in as unspoiled as possible!
In saying that - there's very mild spoilers below.
I enjoyed this! The first quarter of the book was hard going because the whole time I was thinking which I guess is a good thing. Better that than a character that doesn't evoke any emotions I suppose! A bunch of stuff happened and I was so shocked to see I was only 25% of the way through! The pace didn't slow down too much which was good. I read the other 75% in one sitting and there was a tipping point for the twist where I still didn't understand what the twist was 😂 I thought I had accidentally skipped a section and even went back a few pages to see if I had. They explicitly reference the twist and I still didn't click because I was glad there was a positive ending even if it was a bit unbelievable. I got a lot of satisfaction in the scene and I liked how quick the end wrapped up.
