A half millennia ago, Siolene’s enemies took everything from her, including, they thought, her life.
Against all odds, she survived in cryo stasis, and thanks to the pirate captain who rescued her, she built a new family and a new life as Queen of Ajen.
But old enmities die hard, and when the lives of her children are threatened, there is only one choice left for Siolene must trust in her found family, in her husband, and in his enigmatic fixer as they return to face the enemy on his own ground.
It may cost her everything she’s built, but Siolene cannot fail. One way or another, she will keep The Conqueror’s Promise.
Kacey Ezell was born in South Dakota in 1977. Her parents joined the US Air Force in 1984, and she grew up around the world on various military bases. When she was seven, her mother gave her a copy of Anne McCaffrey’s Dragondrums, and shortly thereafter, Kacey decided that she wanted to be a dragonrider when she grew up. In 1999, she followed her parents into the “family business” and graduated from the United States Air Force Academy before going to pilot training. As dragons were in short supply at the time, she reasoned that flying aircraft was the next best thing. She earned her wings in 2001, and has over 2500 hours in the UH-1N and Mi-17 helicopters. From the time she was a small child, Kacey made up stories to tell to her friends and family. In 2009, while deployed to Iraq, she wrote the military-themed supernatural story “Light”, which was accepted for publication in the Baen Books anthology Citizens. She was asked to consult on John Ringo’s 2015 novel Strands of Sorrow, and wrote the cover story for the Black Tide Rising anthology set in Ringo’s zombie apocalypse universe. That story, “Not in Vain” was selected for inclusion in the “Year’s Best Military SF and Adventure Fiction” anthology produced by Baen Books. In addition, she’s written a story called “Gilded Cage” for the Four Horsemen Universe anthology A Fistful of Credits, and her story “Family Over Blood” will be included in the upcoming Forged In Blood anthology set in Michael Z. Williamson’s Freehold Universe. She and Christopher L. Smith are currently collaborating with John Ringo on a new post-apocalyptic steampunk trilogy from Baen. Kacey writes science fiction, fantasy, horror, noir, romance… etc. fiction. She lives with her husband, two daughters, and two cats.
I recently finished The Queens Fixer, by Kacey Ezell, and I must say that the amount of whelming experienced during those few hours was significantly over what I expected. First, you're whelmed with sadness. Then you're whelmed with anger and bitterness with just a touch of stubbornness for flavor. Unexpectedly you get whelmed with a feeling of acceptance. You feel like you have a pretty solid take on what's going on and then you suddenly get whelmed again with surprise, tinged with just a little bitterness. The whelming just keeps happening.
If only there was a word that could accurately describe how the whelming just happens over and over and over again. Superwhelming... No, that seems wrong. Megawhelming... not quite right either. Oh well, I guess I'll just have to leave it up to the good folks at Websters to come up with a word that has this exact definition.
a: to cover over completely : submerge
b: to overcome by superior force or numbers
c: to overpower in thought or feeling
I'm actually quite surprised they haven't done it already.
Moving on, the first book not only grabbed me by the scruff of my neck and dragged me through its chapters, it then put me in a headlock and forced me to read the entire series. I was blissfully unaware that cybernetic bully books even existed until this one caught me unaware, and woefully unprepared, for the brutal reality of the world in which we now reside. I learned this lesson and felt more resilient to the unknown experiences that lay ahead in the next four books in this series.
Will I survive the experience? That remains to be seen but the new feeling of hope that swells in my breast may see me through, but only time will tell.
Note: I may also tell, if I live. Or, if my spirit is summoned. Or, if I am raised as an undead that can speak, type, or write. Or, if I have actually already read the other three books, built a spaceship, traveled to another planet and carved a review in 50 ft tall stone letters in the base of a mountain just waiting for the day humanity will discover my legacy.
Note 2: I recently woke from the medically induced coma I was placed in so my mind could recover from the level of epic awesomeness contained in the four sequels to this book and while my mind is still unable to fully comprehend the level of wordsmithing that went into producing this series, there is one word that comes to mind when I think of them.
That word is "Wow!".
Summary: Buy this series, not because you have to, but because I'm telling you to.
If you like the space opera genre, this trilogy is a must read for you. The complex interplay and dynamic story arc was reminiscient of the same heights within CS Friedman's, In Conquest Born. I was invested in each of these characters which are skillfully written, and cheering them on through the books. Additionally, as someone who reads a decent number of books, I always applaud unique concepts and an nano-agrarian technology based on bloodline was a critical concept through each of the books. Highly recommend!
The worldbuilding is dark, since the villains become even more evil and kill a lot of innocent people. Siolene and Zan are adorable and magnificent, and the ending was everything I hoped for (more would be a spoiler). Named (and liked) characters die, which made me sad. The book is well-written with a twisty plot, surprises galore, and a happy ending. I recommend this series.
This is the third book of the Ashes of Entecea series and I was once again transported into the world of the authors. This book brings together many of the characters introduced in the first two books and continues the fast paced action we have come to expect in this adventure. Assassination attempts, kidnapping, space battles, and pirate rescues. What more could you want?
Conquerors promise the third volume of the Ashes of Entecea delivers on the promises hinted in the first two books. I look forward to more adventures in this setting!
I am a bit behind because I am enjoying the audible version. I like that the 1st and 2nd books built strong characters for the third book to combine them. I am looking forward to the next in the series! Thanks for the stories!
