Elora feels things she can’t explain, but hidden away in the Northern Mountains where her people fear anyone who touches the magic, she can’t risk asking questions.
That is, until her father’s drunken rage endangers her sister Tera’s life and the boy she’s loved since her youth tells her he suspects there’s magic in his bloodline.
Along with her best friend Shamir, Elora steals away with Tera and Jude to discover the truth about the blood running through their veins.
Of Hidden Blood pulled me in pretty quickly with its mix of forbidden magic, family loyalty, and quiet tension. Elora and Jude were easy characters to root for, and I liked how the story balanced emotional moments with the larger mystery surrounding the Order and their world. The setting felt vivid without being overwhelming, and the ending definitely made me curious to keep reading the series. A solid fantasy novella with a lot of heart.
Thank you to BookSirens and the author for the review copy, this is my honest review.
Of Hidden Blood by Cindy Gunderson is a quick but emotionally charged fantasy romance novella that leans heavily into forbidden attraction, mystery, and magical tension.
Despite its shorter length, the story doesn’t hold back—it throws you straight into a world where secrets run deep and desire becomes dangerous.
The dynamic at the center is what drives the story: a forbidden connection wrapped in magic, restraint, and emotional conflict. There’s an immediate sense of tension—like something powerful is being held back just beneath the surface.
What stands out most is the atmosphere:
* dark fantasy undertones * hidden truths and identity * forbidden romance energy * fast-paced emotional escalation
Because it’s a novella, everything happens quickly, but it still manages to deliver that addictive “can’t look away” feeling.
Of Hidden Blood: A Forbidden Fantasy Romance Novella is a quick, sharp hit of forbidden fantasy romance that wastes no time pulling you straight into its tension.
Even though it’s a novella, it manages to establish a strong sense of secrecy and danger right from the start. There’s this constant feeling that everything is being held together by fragile rules—rules that are already starting to crack. That “forbidden” element isn’t just aesthetic here, it actually drives the emotional stakes in a way that feels immediate and a little dangerous.
The romance is intense in a condensed, almost accelerated way. Because of the shorter format, everything happens quickly, but it still carries that push-and-pull energy that makes forbidden pairings so addictive. There’s attraction, hesitation, and a sense of inevitability that builds fast, even if it doesn’t always get the space to fully breathe.
I did find myself wanting more development in certain areas—especially around the world-building and the emotional grounding of the relationship. The foundation is intriguing, but the novella length means some of the deeper layers feel more hinted at than fully explored.
That said, the pacing works in its favour. It’s fast, focused, and keeps the momentum tight, which makes it an easy read to devour in one sitting. There’s no real downtime, just a steady pull through the story’s core tension.
