Unnatural. One word to sum up werewolf Kyle Larsen—his mood swings, abnormal body, and choice of female.

The first two, he blames on the vampire venom.

The third, though? No, feline shifter Brook Nicholls was all his doing—a female of whom the pack will never approve.

As part of the Coalition, an organisation with even stricter rules than the pack and a rigidly warped sense of responsibility, Brook comes with a whole lot of opposition of her own.

No wonder the two of them keep their relationship secret for as long as they can.

Now, distanced from his family by his own indiscretions, Kyle’s left to fight battles he’s unsure how to win—some of them even against his own pack.

Is one woman really so important that he’s willing to defy his Alpha for her?

If his heart has any say in the matter, the answer will be yes.

It seems as though this series alternates between Urban Fantasy and Paranormal Romance with each new installment. CAGED’s plot was very action-y while as UNNATURAL’s focused more on love; there’s still plenty high octave moments in this novel, but ultimately the entire story revolves around Kyle and Brook’s relationship. I finished book 3 thinking “hey, these cat shifters aren’t half bad”, then I met the rest of Nicholls’ family. As much as I enjoyed learning about the inner workings of the Coalition, there were times when their views on women made my blood boil, and I kind of wish the main couple’s HEA had included the Pack slaughtering all of the kitties. J.A. Belfield definitely succeeds in creating antagonists that you’ll love to hate.

I took an immediate liking to Brook in CAGED, and have been looking forward to reading her story ever since. Little did I know that she’s actually the complete opposite of her entire race, so with the exception of Nicholls, I won’t be adding these shifters to my list of favourites anytime soon. I enjoyed learning about their world, and thought the author did a good job of incorporating feline traits into her characters, but at the end of the day that doesn’t change the fact that at their core, cats are selfish cruel animals. Brook’s sole purpose within the Coalition is to bring kittens into the world which is appalling enough in itself without adding ridiculous chauvinistic rules into the mix.

Nicholls is expected to Chose a mate by her 25th birthday, get knocked up, give birth, and then repeat the cycle all over again with a different Tom. She’s basically a glorified broodmare. And, that’s not even the worst of it! When her parents find out that she’s been sleeping with a dog in an attempt to escape her fate; they beat her, lock her in a cellar, and play sick mind games. Turns out her own family are even bigger monsters than the vamps that kidnapped her in the previous installment—out of the frying pan and into the fire. Her first glimpse of freedom actually comes in the form of a harlots ball, or as the Coalition likes to call it, a “Seasonal Party”. Needless to say, this book made me angrier and angrier with each new chapter I read.

Kyle just didn’t do it for me the way the Holloway boys do, so it’s probably a good thing that this novel focused more on Brook’s story than on his. I liked the Ethan and Sean moments, and was a little surprised to see Gabe already mated. I’m guessing that happens in one of the novellas that I have yet to read—or at least I’m hoping that it does, because I really love his character. Belfield is relentless with the cat/dog clichés and humour which I adored! And, by the end of this book there wasn’t a doubt left in my mind as to why I prefer werewolves over panthers; give me loyalty and family instead malice and insolence any day. The only exception other than Brook was Clive, and I’m still not 100% sure what his motivations were.

UNNATURAL casts touchy subjects like prejudice and sexism in a paranormal light, and demonstrates that HEA’s are possible, even between cats and dogs.

I would love to gush & gush & gush - on & on & on about the emotional awesome epic-ness of this story, but a full review must wait until the official ARCs are released.

What I CAN say about this beta read is that no Holloway Pack fan will be disappointed. Ms. Belfield brings a whole new level of story telling for this book's MC. It's gut wrenching, turmoil galore, action, suspense, rage, love, tears.

While sneakily thrilled I am one of the first to read it, my heart goes out to all of you who must wait. Anticipate it, folks. Gear up & get ready.

This book will knock your socks off.

Loved it! When's the next one going to be available? I want . . no need more Holloway Pack!

INITIAL THOUGHTS
Well to say I have high expectations for this book is an understatement. I have loved every other Holloway Pack novel I have read so of course am totally relaxed in one way as I know I'm going to be reading a great standard of book, yet I'm on edge and highly anticipating what will happen in this book.

MY REVIEW
I received an e-arc of this one from JA Belfield via her publishers J Taylor Publishing in exchange for my honest review.
The cover shows a large black cat, whom we met in the previous book. The large angry looking cat is Brook, so I know she is going to be involved in this book somehow.
Would the cover make me pick the book up in a bookstore? Yes, I really enjoy reading shifter books and I love, love, love J.A. Belfield and her writing style.
Once you read the blurb you find out it is a story about Kyle and his chosen female partner.
Kyle has been a bit of a love them and leave them type. That's exactly how hie relationship with Brook began and was meant to end. Kyle and Brook share their trauma and what they went through in the previous book, at the hands of the vampires. They were both changed by that experience.
Though both Kyle and Brook know they should not be compatible as a couple but both feel an instant and instinctive draw to each other that neither can walk away from. They are also both aware their families will not be happy about their union but still they cannot be apart.
The Holloway Pack discover the relationship first and to say they are in shock is a modest description of their reaction. When Brook returns to her feline pack it seems the relationship has also been discovered by the coalition (the felines at the top, who make the rules). Brook's family literally take her hostage until they can arrange a party to pair her with one of their own pack. Which may not sound so bad except that she is expected to have a kitten with the chosen one and then will have to choose another mate and another and keep re-producing to increase the pack. Brook feels nothing but contempt for the other Toms, all bar one, Clive. Clive has been a friend since they were children. . . could the answer lay in choosing Clive? Could Brook perhaps escape once she has chosen without having to "seal the deal" with Clive. After all it is Kyle that Brook truly loves.
Without going into much detail, things go according to Brooks plan, she does get away, only o be kidnapped by a Tom who wants her to breed with him to improve his position in the Coalition.
Clive and Kyle end up working together to find the feline they both love. So do they rescue Brook? Do the other Toms help or interfere? How do a Dog and a Cat work together? Which family turns out to be the most supportive?
There's a great scene in the book with Sean and Kyle talking about soul mates and how much and intensely it hurts when they are kept apart. This book also shows the deep friendship between Kyle and Ethan. It also shows a potential troublemaker in the pack in the shape of Dan and his lack of understanding towards Kyle. Beth, and Jem don't feature a great deal but when thy do they show where the real strength of the pack lies! I also love the fact baby Lia has the whole pack wrapped around her little finger!
So did I enjoy the book? Oh yes, I totally loved it! Would I recommend the book? Of course I'd recommend to all readers who love a great shifter book. These books have a fantastic family feel. Make some time to sit and read this one, you won't want to put it down I didn't!Would I read another book in this series? Yes please just tell me when! What more can I say I adore this brilliant series!Would I read other books not in this series by this Author? Yes I love J.A. Belfield's writing style as well as well as her characters.

I got a copy in exchange of an honest review

In my opinion this is the best book in the Holloway pack series so far. After reading the third book Caged I wanted to know more about Brook and the cat shifters and when I heard Julie actually has written a book about this I was beyond excited. Okay so it’s actually told from both Kyle and Brook’s perspective, but that makes it even better.

Even though I got interrupted a lot while reading this, as soon as I picked it up again I couldn’t stop reading and I wanted to read more and find out if Kyle and Brook got their happy ending or not. Even though it has less action than the previous books, it is really good. There is a lot of problems Kyle and Brook has to overcome and both families seem against them at first. The book starts off when Kyle and Brook already are in love with each other, although I would’ve liked seeing the feelings between them develop, I did like how the story started. A lot does happen in this book and I liked learning more about Brook and the cat shifters. I got angry at the cat shifters a few times, because really they are so strict and I don’t like how they treated Brook. I am sure there is a good reason for this, but sometimes I wished they would just act a bit more nicely towards Brook or even listen to her.

With every book in this series we learn more about the characters, while at the first book I had difficulties keeping the males in the pack apart it does get easier with each book. Although I have to admit that a lot of this book is about Kyle and Brook and the other characters play a lesser part and I still confuse some of the pack members with each other sometimes. I did like seeing Ethan from Kyle’s perspective especially because in Caged we saw Ethan’s perspective and after reading Caged I do see him differently. I did think Kyle acted a bit stupid sometimes and something I just wanted him to think things through before doing anything. He got himself in a lot of trouble that could’ve be prevented if he just opened up and told someone about it. I really liked the romance between Kyle and Brook, I think they are really good for each other and I liked reading about this seemingly unnatural couple.

The world building in this book is mainly about the cat shifters. In this book we get an idea of how the cat shifters life and we learn a bit about their society and the Coalition, although I still would’ve liked learning more, because I think it’s really interesting to get information about another supernatural race. Also there is something surrounding Kyle that didn’t got explained as well as I would’ve liked.

To conclude: I think this book is the best book I this series so far I really liked learning more about Brook and the cat shifters and I really liked the romance. I really like Brook and I like learning more about Kyle. The world building mostly focuses on the cat shifters.

Kyle and Brooke. Two people who shouldn’t be together. A werewolf and a cat shifter should not be a couple but the heart won’t be denied. The only thing standing in their way – their families. They try to keep their secret for as long as they can but their families intervene. Hers a bit more aggressively than his pack. Now Kyle must fight alone to get back the woman he loves before her family makes her Choice for her.

To have Kyle and Brooke be a couple brings to mind a quote from one of my favorite movies:
“dogs and cats living together... mass hysteria!”

Hysteria is an understatement and it is from both sides of their families but not from them. They are a great couple together. You can feel the bond between them which made me fall instantly in love with their story. The actions of everyone else, was interesting. Having an affinity to cats I would think they would have the better understanding of Brooke catty around (Pun intended). However their rigidly warped sense of responsibility and the way they treat their women definitely moves them into the very bad characters. The wolf shifters were a bit better behaved. If I had one regret to this book is I don’t have a complete understanding of how and where the vampire venom comes into play. Minus that tidbit, Unnatural really worked for me.

This is my first book in the series and while I do think I missed out on some previous happenings, over-all I find this book worked well as a stand-alone. The story definitely has merit and is well worth the read.

I received this book from JeepDiva for the express purposes of an honest review. The opinions and rating of this review are solely mine and in no way was I compensated.

J.A. Belfield surely knows how to keep me on the edge of my seat and keep my eyes riveted to the pages as they fly by. The suspense surrounding Kyle and Brook was killing me and Unnatural ended up being yet another installment in the Holloway Pack series earning two thumbs up from me. I think I may say that with each book in the series but it's true, I've loved each story and the characters in them. Everyone in the pack and even some outside the pack are just so great. I mean sometimes you will want to yell at them but ultimately you always walk away loving each and every one of them. I look forward to spending more time with them in book 5!

Another amazing tale of love and passion and friendship. And of course, it's full of sexy werewolfs!

I love that every character Julie writes has a different 'voice'. It doesn't matter if it's Sean or Jem or Ethan or Brooke or Kyle or one of the other hotties, all of them are written different.
I think this is a great skill, not many writers have! But Julie does!

Unnatural was a great read! Kyle, just like all his packmates, makes you want to be the female he loves. Makes you want to be the female he desires!

I can't wait for the next Holloway Pack sequel!

3.5 to 4 stars
I received this book in exchange for an honest review.

Unnatural is the 4th book in the Holloway Pack series (not including the novellas, which I have also read). The book that started everything has a new name and cover (as does Unnatural). Darkness and Light, also (now) known as Called was about Sean and his mate Jem. This book started my love for J.A. Belfield's writing and wolf pack stories. After the first book, I quickly devoured the other books in the series (which generally center around other characters with the Holloway Pack family). I'm not sure why I waited so long to read Kyle's story, especially since it picked up right after Ethan's book, Caged.

Kyle, a member of the Holloway Pack was also caged like Ethan, as was the heroine in this story, Brook, who happens to be a shifter, a panther. Brook being a panther, not a wolf or a human is obviously an issue for Kyle's family. But as they say, the heart wants what the heart wants, and Kyle's heart wants Brook.

While I once again enjoyed the banter between Pack members, especially Kyle and his best friend Ethan, I'm not sure I was sold on Kyle and Brook at first. And, I felt pretty badly for one particular character that was so hopelessly in love with Brook. At times I was hoping she'd end up with him. Clearly, though Kyle was in love with Brook (not a spoiler), and in the end, I was happy with where the characters ended up.

This book was told in both first person POV and third person, which was weird at first, and hard to get used to. You get Kyle's POV (first person), feeling what he feels, but then when we got Brook's POV, it was in third person. I really had a hard time getting into it at first, but as I read it, it felt natural, especially towards the end when the two POV's alternate quickly every couple of pages (and even every couple of paragraphs). I can see why the author choose to do the alternating POV's the way she did.

The best part of this book, though and something that I have enjoyed about all of Julie's books is her writing. She knows how to write suspense, humor and sexy times. Her writing is very real (even with fantastical creatures like wolves and panthers). I will definitely read more of this author's work, especially since in this series the books and characters are linked. You become invested in these characters and want to see where they go.

Great read

This was an amazing installment to an amazing series. I had such a hard time putting it down. Brook and Kyle's story was so intense, but at times had me madder than hell at what all they to endure, together and separately. There is a lot going on with Kyle, because of what he went through in Caged, that didn't get a lot of answers, so I'm hoping that gets touched on in future books because I'm really interested in where the author will go with that. Looking forward to continuing with this series.

Holy kitty cat!!! Yes, we know how much I love all those werewolf boys, but now, there's a kitty in the mix, and no, we aren't going to only be chasing them in trees :) We all met Brooke in Caged, when Ethan made me love him a little more. BUT, Kyle is the hero for Brooke, and I couldn't agree with that more. AND it's got both Kyle and Brooke's POVs so it's quite awesome! And we get a look into more supernaturals and how they live.

Kyle is still having some trouble from those damn vampers. And though Gabe had it worse, Kyle is a little too pigheaded to ask Gabe about it, or hell, he won't ask anyone for help. He confides in Brooke, but not his pack, and now this is causing some major interruptions. Mistrust, caution, suspicions. There are several times when I totally wanted to majorly backhand Kyle. Serious. I thought Ethan went easy on him, as he is his best friend, but you know men, they always wanna do it on their own, their way, and A LOT of bad things that happened to Brooke may have been avoided if Kyle just got off his damn prideful high horse. With that said, I SERIOUSLY CHEERED! I wanted him to get his HEA with Brooke. I NEEDED it, not just for his own sake, but for her too.

Brooke has the worst life EVER. You know how I said Jem had it horrible with her first husband, well WAIT, just wait, until you meet the family that surrounds Brooke. I am going to KILL both her mother and father for her. I swear it. I am totally now in full crazy person mode just thinking about all the horrible things they did to Brooke, AND WANTED to do even more! Brooke is definitely a great heroine. She's strong, she's willful, she's going to put those dogs in their place, and she's pretty, both in human and in kitty form. She's also a shifter, not a were, and I very much liked her differences. I also felt sorry for her friend Clive, but I'll let you read to know about him. It's quite an amazing turn around for Brooke, and I am seriously glad!

Ok, this may have been the hardest book of the group. Brooke and Kyle both have some horrible things they go through. It's quite an amazing journey. I am not quite sure how to say more without revealing things, so with that, I will say, get this book, get this series, and be amazed! It's so worth it! ;) 5 AMAZING KITTY AND WOLF PAWS!!!

Kyle

I didn't really know much about Kyle or his personality until Ethan's book, but I really like him! He may have been carefree before, but since his capture, he is a brooding, take nothing from no one bad a**! And I loved it!! He stands up to anyone who stands in his way when it comes to Brook. It was hard to "see" what happened to Brook and the almost situations also. Thankfully, everything works out in the end. I also love getting sneak peeks into the others' lives. :)

Book 4 in the Holloway Pack, not including the little extra's published, is Kyle's story.

I have to start out by saying that I love Brook. She was introduced in Book 3 "Caged" and I was fascinated with her quick changes, her sassy attitude and her fearless energy.

Kyle is a wolf and Brook is a Panther, dogs and cats do not mix, but apparently fate has other plans. Neither one of their families approves, but Brook's family turns out to be bat shit crazy. With lots of suspense this story will definitely hold your attention.

Unfortunately the ending did not live up to the hype for me. It was too quick of an end and I feel like there wasn't enough resolution for the couple as a whole.

Hopefully there is another .5 installment later that will finish out Kyle and Brook's story, it's just a bummer it wasn't all included in this one. Either way I am still plan to continue on with the series. The Holloway pack is a true family that cares for each other, and you can't help but fall in love with everyone.

I received a copy of "Unnatural" in exchange for my honest opinion. THANKS!!
