the reluctant mate is infact not Reluctant at all. maybe only for the first 20%.

safety :
- safe
- no cheating, no owd / omd
- no virgins, i genuinely expected both of them to be virgins since they've been in love with each other since highschool and knew they were mates. it was a bummer
- no mention of their past sex lives nor any mention of whether they were celibate during seperation.
- the lack of clarification on their celibacy status really bothered me, i know they loved each and were obsessed with each other and no way they fucked around after finding out they were mates, but then again they were also in love before the mating bond and still slept with OP so it's not reliable to assume celibacy.

Sofia reallllllyyyy frustrated me in this book, yes she was funny and i liked her in the first half but she did her own self dirty.
on 2 different occasions she swore and promised herself that she is strong and independent and a changed woman and will not be taking derek back, then a chapter later the dude has his head between her thighs ??? wtf sofia
not to say that what derek did was inexcusable, he was kinda justified even if his reasons were EXACTLY the same as Ryan from book 1-3 except Derek never publicly rejected and humiliated Sofia. but if Sofia wanted to blow things up and act dramatic the least she can do is hold her own for a bit not drop her panties the second Derek shows up .
but Derek did keep on making the same mistakes, first when he left for the military without talking to her despite him knowing what the military does to people and he might not come back, 2nd time was after he got back from the military after their date, dude just up and ghosted her, at first i was mad that he made the same mistake Ryan did with Mai but after seeing how INSUFFERABLE Sofia can be i started to think he did the right thing to cut her off and ghost her instead of explaining because that girl does not have a single rational brain cell and would have gotten herself into trouble by not leaving derek .
which brings us to the 3rd time he left her AGAIN because she was being difficult and wouldn't listen. so he had to tie her up .

I really liked sofia's character in previous books, she was witty, funny and a good friend, but she was very hard to like in her own book, it's like her mission in life was to make Derek's life as difficult as possible instead of actually listening to him and making plans TOGETHER.
but i did feel super bad for her after saying she felt unloveable since everyone left her aka her parents, Mai, then Derek.

things that annoyed me / were unnecessary :
- the amount of times Mai's situation was brought up or was on page, WE GET IT SHE'S PREGNANT AND ON BED REST AND DOESN'T LIKE RYAN CODDLING HER, we don't need to reread the SAME dialogue about it 15 times. we got a shit tone of Mai complaining but only one scene of Mason without Shya.
- Sofia's BBS, get it together ffs
-Derek taking so fucking long to explain shit to Sofia

things i LOVED :
- Lucian and Darla that's it , I WANT MORE OF THOSE ICONIC DIVAS
- also like that there was a new conflict/ plot because the one from previous books was BORRRRING

Everyone keeps saying that the mate bond is something that can't be broken, but Darek Shaw gave Sofia one picture-perfect night and then he ghosted her, and now she's determined to prove them all wrong...

Sofia has mastered the look of looking fine when she's really anything but. Running Three Rivers' hottest bar, keeping an eye out for her brother, and always smiling for her Pack – it's just what she does.

What she doesn't do? She doesn't trust Darek Shaw. Her so-called fated mate who choose the military over her, returned for one perfect night with her and then decided to ignore her for months. So, she built her walls so high and strong that there wasn't a werewolf alive who could scale them or get through them.

Now Derek has kidnapped Sophia to some remote cabin saying that it's “for her protection”. Danger is now hunting them and enemies are circling their Pack once again. Sophia now faces an impossible choice: She can either trust the man who broke her heart twice or she can lose everything – and everyone – she loves and holds dear.

Derek has been making the difficult choices his entire life. And he knows that with each choice he makes, a small piece of his soul is ripped away, but he knows that he would do it all over again if it means that Sophia is safe. And when he discovers that enemies are targeting Sophia, he doesn't hesitate for a second – even if it means that he has to tie her to a bed, he'll do whatever he has to to keep her safe from what's coming.

As Sophia and Derek fight to survive the conspiracy, one that not only threatens them but all werewolves, Derek soon realizes that there is only one fight that really matters to him, he has to win back Sofia's trust, and that's what is most important. As their enemies close in around them and Sophia's life is on the line, Derek knows that he'll rip through heaven and hell if that's what will prove his devotion – even if in the process it costs him everything.

The Reluctant Mate is a dual POV, fated mates romance that has protective alphas, fierce intelligent heroines, and you are promised a HEA. This book is perfect for fans of wolf shifters, forced proximity, and mates who are going to fight to the death for those they love. And the Reluctant Mate can be read as a standalone.
This is the story that I have been waiting a long time for. I have loved the Three Rivers series since book 1 and I have loved both Sophia and Derek since that book. And I have been wanting to know their story forever. And here it is, we finally got it and wow, it's oh so much more than I ever thought it would be.
Haunted by his time in the military Derek knows that it has caused him to make mistakes when it comes to his fated mate, Sophia. He also knows that he has a lot of work ahead of him to fix their relationship and regain her trust. But, he also knows that he loves her enough to give her the space she has asked for and she wants.
Sofia and Derek have known each other since they were kids and she has known that he was her fated mate since before he left for the military. They had the most perfect and amazing date when Derek returned, but then for reasons she can't understand, after that night, he just ghosted her.
Everyone Sophia has ever loved or cared about has left her, this has left her feeling like she isn't good enough and that she isn't lovable and will never be good enough to be loved, worst of all, it's left her feeling like she's not good enough to have anyone stick around for her, to have someone have her back and stand by her side.

After their parents left, Sofia was left with the job of raising her younger brother Jace, and running the coffee shop/bar in Three Rivers. Derek didn't just leave her once, no he left her twice. Once when he joined the military and the second time when he ghosted her after she honestly had the best night of her life with him. Making matters worse, even her best friend who is more like her sister Mai left her for 4 years. Thankfully for Sophia Mai is now back and is the pack Alpha with her mate Ryan, who just happens to be Derek's brother.

After Derek kidnaps Sophia for the 3rd time, leaving her tied up in a cabin where it's no surprise her enemies almost got her, Sophia decides that she is the one in need of a change. Derek goes racing after her and finally figures out where she is hiding, turns out it's with her boss, the owner of the bar (he has a rather large secret he's kept from the rest of the pack it turns out) and while they've been hiding out together he's managed to convince Sophia that he's never going to leave her again and at that moment they seal their own mate bond.

It's the ghosts of Derek's past that are bringing trouble to the Three Rivers Pack and the Wolf Council has been trying to deal with it. It's only after the battle and other troubles pass that Sofia and Derek finally return to their pack, they still know that their main enemy is still out there, waiting and watching them, and both Sophia and Derek know that they are going to have to face him at some point in the near future.

I loved and adored this book. It was amazing watching both Sophia and Derek grow so much in this book. Yes, in the last 4 books, Sophia has grown a lot but her growth journey in this book alone was just remarkable Derek, will always be the stubborn military man who needs to own up and realize that he's made some pretty intense and serious mistakes but owning up to them is the first step of earning back that trust.

I have been in love with Kira Nightingale's writing since I read the first book in this series and I have loved watching her writing just keep getting better and better with each book. When it comes to wolf shifter books, she is one of the best in my opinion.

And I have loved watching the journies that she has taken Mai, Ryan, Sophia, Derek, and everyone else on and I can hardly wait to meet Mai and Ryan's twins and read about all the adventures they are going to get up to. And I can hardly wait for it to be Sam's turn at a HEA and to find his own fated mate. After all this time, he deserves some happiness and peace.

Derek and Sofia

Wow! I met and wanted Derek and Sofia's story since book 1 of the Three Rivers series.

Derek is haunted by his time in the military, and it has caused him to make mistakes when it comes to his fated mate, Sofia. He knows that he has work to do to fix their relationship, but he loves her enough to give her the space she wants.

Sofia has known Derek since they were kids and has known that he was her fated mate since before he left for the military. When Derek returned, they had an amazing date, but then he ghosted her. Everyone Sofia loves has left her, causing her to feel like she isn't loveable or good enough for anyone to stick around for. She is raising her teenage brother Jace after their parents left and is running the coffee shop/bar in Three Rivers. Derek left her twice, once to join the military and when he ghosted her after the best night of her life. Even her best friend Mai left her for 4 years but has since returned and is now the pack Alpha with her mate Ryan, who is Derek's brother.

Sofia decides that she needs a change after being kidnapped by Derek and left (for the 3rd time) tied up in a cabin where his enemies almost got here. When Derek tracks her down hiding out with her boss (the owner of her bar whom has a large secret he kept from the rest of the pack) he convinced Sofia that he will never leave her again and they seal their mate bond. Ghosts from Derek's past are behind the trouble the Three River pack and the Wolf Council have been dealing with.

After a battle and other troubles, Sofia and Derek returned to their pack, knowing that their main enemy is out there and they would face him at some point.

I absolutely loved this book and loved seeing Sofia grow so much in these last 5 books. Kira Nightingale became my favorite author after reading her first book, and seeing where she has taken these characters so far in the series has made me love her even more! I can't wait to find out about Mai and Ryan's twins once they are born, but I'm even more excited to see Sam get his fated mate and HEA.

This book is a 5 ⭐️ star and 4 🌶 spice level read for me!

I’ve been dying to get my hands-on Derek and Sofia’s story, and let me tell you—it was so worth the wait.

This book took me on a wild, emotional rollercoaster. From the very first chapter, I was pulled right in. There were some parts I did not see coming, and the push and pull between Derek and Sofia had me feral for more. I’ve been rooting for these two since earlier in the series, and finally seeing their bond play out—messy, complicated, and so real—was everything I hoped for.
Not gonna lie, there were moments when I was seriously mad at Derek. His decisions? Rough. But you also get to see the pain and trauma he’s carrying, there is no excuse, but it made me understand him – EVENTUALLY! And the way he tries to make things, right? Okay, I see you Derek! 😅

Sofia is such a beautiful character. I loved getting more of her story—especially her relationship with her brother, Jace. She’s been through a lot, but she never stops fighting for the people she loves. She and Derek have a lot to overcome, but the way their story unfolded felt magic!
There’s also so much going on in the bigger world and we’re finally seeing just how deep the corruption goes.

If you love second chance (or third… or fourth 😅) romances, steamy moments, and shifters with real emotional depth, The Reluctant Mate totally delivers. It was heartfelt, intense, and left me dying to know what’s next. Bring on the next Three Rivers book—I’m so not ready to leave this world yet!

Derek & Sofia - will they finally find equal footing?

Reading through this series we already know Sophia and Derek are mates but are refusing to acknowledge the bond. Now it is time to find out exactly what is holding these two back.

You get to see what Derek went through while in the military. It has really shaped who he is now and feeds his fears.

We also get a little more backstory for Sophia and how she ended up caring for her brother Jace.

Plus we are still dealing with the Ripple crisis. Now there is a bigger threat with it on the horizon. As past, present and future collide we experience all the brutality and rage Derek hides.

Neither of these characters makes it unscathed but it does lead to more details about the Ripple crisis, attempts for cures, and even some of who is behind it. Plus we see from Derek's twin, Sam who is finding out just how corrupt the wolf council truly is.

That ending really leaves a lot of questions in the air and I can not wait to see what is next for the shifters from Three Rivers.

The reluctant mate

Finished reading Derek and Sophia’s story.

I enjoyed it but not as much as the first few books in this series, for me it felt rushed and some parts of the book I wish it went into it a bit more, there’s one character being a dragon shifter- seems rare to have dragon shifters and I wonder if it will be gone into more in the next book as it mentioned a witch’s curse.

Derek was being the overprotective mate but not really communicating with Sophia. The reason he was acting the way he did and the actions he took, I feel like communication is always key in a relationship and I just couldn’t see that with them till after the mating bond snapped into place.

I am looking forward to reading the next brothers book in the series

Omg! Y’all!!! This is one of my favorite books of the entire series, if not my top favorite!! Sofia and Derek did NOT disappoint. The banter is there just like I hoped. Definitely had some unknowns filled in, was very grateful for that.

I feel like Sofia got to find more of herself and grow a bit more through this, and eventually figured out things she was missing, you’ll have to read it to find out, I’m not giving anything away. 😉

This book had me all in my feelings, even crying a few times, I absolutely loved it!

This was a fun crazy ride filled with mystery, romance & thrills. I love a second chance romance (er... thrid or maybe even fourth in this case) & this one did not disappoint. There were a few points in the book that I hated Derek & his poor decision making skills, but he groveled & proved himself to me (and Sofia). I'm also loving the side characters in the series & how we get to see them again and again. Overall a great shifter read & I can't wait for Sam's story next!!

I really enjoyed this read. I’ve been waiting for this couple and was so glad to finally read their story and see them get their happy ending. I loved the uphill battle their story had. They truly believed in each other. They were amazing and really deserved each other.

worth the wait

Ahhh… I’ve waited months for this release and it was worth it. The action, excite and love story continues in The Reluctant Mate. We also find out why Dereck was basically pushing Sofia away…. Read the series, you won’t regret it..

Ugh this one was the worst one out of all of them. I just couldn’t connect to either character. It bothered me so much. I wish it was still in Mai and Ryan’s prospective. They were sooo good. I am officially done with this series, I will not read more of this one

I was looking for a rejected mate story - which this is - but there's a bigger story of drugs and prejudice and stuff which is far more complicated than I want to read right now.

This was my first Kira Nightingale book and I loved it! It's part of a series of interconnected standalone's and a trilogy--Shifters of the Three Rivers. While it's not necessary to read them in order, I kinda wish I did and will definitely be going back and reading the rest of the series!

This book was all about, second-chances, fated mates and hidden secrets. The whole story line is so interesting, there are so many hidden twists and turns and I'm really impressed by how well the different surprises/plot points fit together so well. This book definitely has a lot of characters from the previous books, and future books in the series. A lot of our background happenings aren't really resolved in this book, which makes you want to dive into the next interconnected standalone with the next couple to see what happens.

Our couple, Derek and Sofia do get there hard earned HEA in this book though! These two have been through it, in more ways than one. They each have their own wounds, Derek suffering from PTSD after losing his best friend at war and Sofia dealing with a lifetime of abandonment-even from the one person who should've never left her, her fated mate, Derek. Sofia is shut off from him, too hurt by everything that's happened. Little does she know, Derek had very good reasons for everything he's done and he's going to prove it to her.

I really adore this action packed book and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a really interesting Shifter romance!

I’ve been waiting forever for this one !! And it did not disappoint ! Derek and Sofia’s story is full of adversity, bloodlust, hot sexy times and the dogs of war being called to Three Rivers ! It starts off with a few reveals you don’t expect and segues into hot times between Derek and Sofia then ends with Derek and Sofia fighting for their lives … again ! Talk about a rollercoaster ride, this story gives you everything except Mai having the twins ! That had better be how book 6 starts !! This is truly one of the best in the Three Rivers Pack Series !! 5✨’s !
