Everyone keeps saying that the mate bond is something that can't be broken, but Darek Shaw gave Sofia one picture-perfect night and then he ghosted her, and now she's determined to prove them all wrong...
Sofia has mastered the look of looking fine when she's really anything but. Running Three Rivers' hottest bar, keeping an eye out for her brother, and always smiling for her Pack – it's just what she does.
What she doesn't do? She doesn't trust Darek Shaw. Her so-called fated mate who choose the military over her, returned for one perfect night with her and then decided to ignore her for months. So, she built her walls so high and strong that there wasn't a werewolf alive who could scale them or get through them.
Now Derek has kidnapped Sophia to some remote cabin saying that it's “for her protection”. Danger is now hunting them and enemies are circling their Pack once again. Sophia now faces an impossible choice: She can either trust the man who broke her heart twice or she can lose everything – and everyone – she loves and holds dear.
Derek has been making the difficult choices his entire life. And he knows that with each choice he makes, a small piece of his soul is ripped away, but he knows that he would do it all over again if it means that Sophia is safe. And when he discovers that enemies are targeting Sophia, he doesn't hesitate for a second – even if it means that he has to tie her to a bed, he'll do whatever he has to to keep her safe from what's coming.
As Sophia and Derek fight to survive the conspiracy, one that not only threatens them but all werewolves, Derek soon realizes that there is only one fight that really matters to him, he has to win back Sofia's trust, and that's what is most important. As their enemies close in around them and Sophia's life is on the line, Derek knows that he'll rip through heaven and hell if that's what will prove his devotion – even if in the process it costs him everything.
The Reluctant Mate is a dual POV, fated mates romance that has protective alphas, fierce intelligent heroines, and you are promised a HEA. This book is perfect for fans of wolf shifters, forced proximity, and mates who are going to fight to the death for those they love. And the Reluctant Mate can be read as a standalone.
This is the story that I have been waiting a long time for. I have loved the Three Rivers series since book 1 and I have loved both Sophia and Derek since that book. And I have been wanting to know their story forever. And here it is, we finally got it and wow, it's oh so much more than I ever thought it would be.
Haunted by his time in the military Derek knows that it has caused him to make mistakes when it comes to his fated mate, Sophia. He also knows that he has a lot of work ahead of him to fix their relationship and regain her trust. But, he also knows that he loves her enough to give her the space she has asked for and she wants.
Sofia and Derek have known each other since they were kids and she has known that he was her fated mate since before he left for the military. They had the most perfect and amazing date when Derek returned, but then for reasons she can't understand, after that night, he just ghosted her.
Everyone Sophia has ever loved or cared about has left her, this has left her feeling like she isn't good enough and that she isn't lovable and will never be good enough to be loved, worst of all, it's left her feeling like she's not good enough to have anyone stick around for her, to have someone have her back and stand by her side.
After their parents left, Sofia was left with the job of raising her younger brother Jace, and running the coffee shop/bar in Three Rivers. Derek didn't just leave her once, no he left her twice. Once when he joined the military and the second time when he ghosted her after she honestly had the best night of her life with him. Making matters worse, even her best friend who is more like her sister Mai left her for 4 years. Thankfully for Sophia Mai is now back and is the pack Alpha with her mate Ryan, who just happens to be Derek's brother.
After Derek kidnaps Sophia for the 3rd time, leaving her tied up in a cabin where it's no surprise her enemies almost got her, Sophia decides that she is the one in need of a change. Derek goes racing after her and finally figures out where she is hiding, turns out it's with her boss, the owner of the bar (he has a rather large secret he's kept from the rest of the pack it turns out) and while they've been hiding out together he's managed to convince Sophia that he's never going to leave her again and at that moment they seal their own mate bond.
It's the ghosts of Derek's past that are bringing trouble to the Three Rivers Pack and the Wolf Council has been trying to deal with it. It's only after the battle and other troubles pass that Sofia and Derek finally return to their pack, they still know that their main enemy is still out there, waiting and watching them, and both Sophia and Derek know that they are going to have to face him at some point in the near future.
I loved and adored this book. It was amazing watching both Sophia and Derek grow so much in this book. Yes, in the last 4 books, Sophia has grown a lot but her growth journey in this book alone was just remarkable Derek, will always be the stubborn military man who needs to own up and realize that he's made some pretty intense and serious mistakes but owning up to them is the first step of earning back that trust.
I have been in love with Kira Nightingale's writing since I read the first book in this series and I have loved watching her writing just keep getting better and better with each book. When it comes to wolf shifter books, she is one of the best in my opinion.
And I have loved watching the journies that she has taken Mai, Ryan, Sophia, Derek, and everyone else on and I can hardly wait to meet Mai and Ryan's twins and read about all the adventures they are going to get up to. And I can hardly wait for it to be Sam's turn at a HEA and to find his own fated mate. After all this time, he deserves some happiness and peace.
