Medusa and Cabbage are missing, lost through a tear in the fabric of the multiverse.
Cain goes to Sarpedon, the home of the gorgons, to discover a way to find them and bring them home. Before he can do anything, Hermes, the new king of the gods, sends his demigod children to trap Cain, Hannah, Fred, and Layla on Sarpedon so they'll be permanently out of the way.
After realizing escape is impossible, Cain and the others go through the tear and end up in a distant dimension that seemingly branched from Gaia Prime eons ago. They soon learn that this world bears little resemblance to their own in significant ways.
They meet a group of people with troubles of their own. In order to find Medusa and Cabbage and get home, they'll need to help these people fight off an insectoid invasion from another dimension.
It turns out these people are no strangers to mad gods and world-ending events, so Cain agrees to help them save this universe they call the Overworld.
They soon discover that the insectoids are only a small part of their problem. That there are far more sinister forces lurking behind the invasion.
And if they can't stop them, the infection will spread across the multiverse.
Worlds collide in this installment of the Cain series. In the quest to rescue the missing members of the Monster Squad, Medusa and Cabbage, Cain and company find themselves trapped on Sarpedon, the home of the Gorgons. The only way out is through the same tear between dimensions that Medusa and Cabbage followed, so Cain, Hannah, Fred, and Layla dive through that tear = and find themselves in an eerily parallel world. This world however, is populated with people who have serious issues of their own, but who will help Cain find his friends if Cain returns the favor and helps them with their battles. Those of you who have read the Overworld series will recognize and enjoy these characters. Luckily, it's not necessary to have read that series prior to reading this book. I have yet to finish the Overworld series, but still enjoyed, and was able to follow, this story. If you like a crazy imaginative world, with terrific characters, lots of action, more up and down emotions than usual (no spoilers!) and a tense and exciting story - grab this book!
I love the Cain and Overworld stories. This book brings the two together and is an enjoyable action packed ride. I hope there will be many other crossover books with the two teams of Supers saving the world.
I always appreciate not knowing how a series will end. This one was a chaotic whirlwind that introduced a few too many new characters for me to continually track everything. The ending was good, I enjoyed it.
