Pentacles

Rate this book
Pentacles comprises one long story and four short poems by Sabarna Roy. The work delightfully bridges the gap between the mundane and arcane writings of today and provides an interesting, yet intellectually stimulating, treat for the discerning reader. New Life is a long story written from the perspective of a successful adult whose mother had deserted the family for another man. The teenage angst and the scars it has left behind on the psyche of the protagonist are subtly reflected in the character. The different elements and characters of the story are beautifully interwoven to produce an intense and compelling story of an adult haunted by the trauma of being deserted by his mother. The work is interspersed with thought-provoking views on issues like love and socio-economic conditions in India. The traditional rhyme and metre dominated poems are on love, loss and longing. Unshackled by the bonds of rhyme and metre, Sabarna s free verses evoke the stark reality of urban life, hitting you straight in the guts. The use of everyday urban imagery adds to the appeal of the compositions. The concrete prison of urban life and the unfulfilled desire to escape to a simple life is aptly brought out in The Tower. The other poems of the collection are more biographical in nature with the protagonist being the member of the fairer sex. The free verses sketch out their life story with its attendant pathos, poignancy and logic. The best part of all the compositions is that the reader will definitely identify with the poet and will, in one form or other, have similar stories to narrate.

“Pentacles” is book of loss, longing and love. Sabarna Roy created a world which has emotions, betrayl and heartbreaks.

The hero is scarred from childhood due to his family circumstances. His father was an architect and mother was an artist who never got along. They separated and this left an ugly impression on him. He was seeking comfort in Rohini.

The book brings about tribulations of a kid who is raised by a single parent. Love assumes a different meaning for him. The book is a breezy read but somewhat sad.

The first thing that piqued my interest was the cover of this book. It is simple yet hints of something distinctive. As the blurb said this book consists of one long story and four short poems. And I personally liked the four short poems more than the other one.

This book can be well described as a reflection of the situations that a person sometimes gets propelled into and recapturing them in an exquisite manner of experience and hardships.

Pentacles is the second book that I read by this author, the first one being Winter poems. The way in which this book is written is exclusive and sure enough it was expected because his writing style is one and only. I liked how the author talked about sadness and how your life doesn't stop at sorrows, it's a cycle where hopes and dreams follow along, where patience and virtue can make you an inspiration.

I would recommend that everyone must give this book a try.

A unique read

Pentacles consists of one long story and four poems narrating a short story along with them. Every poem is unique in its own way and quite a few of them were relatable. This book can be read in a single sitting. Few lines in the story are very heart touching and thought provoking.

New life is a story of King whose mother abondoned him in his childhood and how that effected his mindset. The author narrated the story in King's Point of view and the way he saw life after his mother left him was shown nicely. Seemanti and Rohini are also very strong characters and they had an important role to play. I liked chasing and 2001-2002 amongst all the four poems. The author focused more on content and the depth of the poem that I totally got involved in them.

The title is intriguing which was one of the reason for me to pick this book though I felt the cover could have been more attractive. Good usage of vocabulary and the story went with flow though there weren't many twists, the narration made sure that it was not at all boring at any point of time. Overall, I would recommend this one to all those who are looking for a fresh and different read.

It’s a short read. I finished this book in a single sitting, hence I will keep my reviews brief. As mentioned, the book consist of one long short story and four long story poems in free verses. I will discuss the blurb too briefly as it’s a short story so it will be spoilt for readers. I really enjoyed reading story “the new life” I liked how emotionally and beautifully the author has described that story. I liked the early life and interpersonal relationship dynamics of the family. Like I really felt that how author describes that “baba dies peacefully.” And “our lives changed after baba’s death.” I like the relationship dynamics with Rohini. Like that perfectly describes the impact of childhood incidents on dynamics of adulthood relationships and majority relationships nowadays follows the same path. I liked writing style of the author. Too beautiful. Good use of vocabulary and language. I loved the word and sentence plays. I wanted to read more stories. The concept is good. There are some scope of improvement in poems but as mentioned earlier, it’s written in free verses, so it’s perfect on its own. Overall good one. I really enjoyed reading.

I have read almost three books by this author and this one is the best of all. This book is a collection of a long short story and some poems.
The story is about a child whose mother leaves him and his father to go stay with another man she falls in love with. The story is narrated by the child himself. The teenage angst and the scars it has left behind on the psyche of the protagonist are subtly reflected in the character. The different elements and characters of the story are beautifully interwoven to produce an intense and compelling story of an adult haunted by the trauma of being deserted by his mother.
The traditional rhyme and metre dominated poems are on love, loss and longing.
.
While the story does create a feeling of sadness, betrayal and trauma from exemplary writing, the poems didn't stand up to the mark (for me). I have read some other poems by the author and had higher expectations.
Always looking forward to read more by the author.

There are always some authors we can always trust for the work they write; Subarna Roy is one such author for me. I was already convinced by his skills when I read 'Etchings of The First Quarter of 2020' and 'Winter Poems' and this time time 'Pentacles'. This book consisted of one long short story where the author reflected the pain and intense emotions of a son whose mother has left him and his father for another man. And then, there are four narrative poems in the end which are more like the tales themselves.
.
There's something about Sabarna Roy that I observed again, I have read 'The Outsider' by Albert Camus and its narration was something that I loved the most about it, in Sabarna Roy's case, I can see his work influenced by Albert Camus as well! It's not easy to set oneself on the flow but it takes some extra efforts to truly merge into the plot and the story.
.
The best moments are when the author adds many philosophical contents while the protagonist passes through the phases of his life. These are the contents that make the story more intriguing and provide thought-provoking elements to the mind.

" 𝘐 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘻𝘦𝘥: 𝘭𝘰𝘯𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘪𝘴 𝘭𝘪𝘬𝘦 𝘢 𝘵𝘸𝘪𝘯𝘬𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘳 𝘢𝘨𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘴𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘷𝘢𝘶𝘭𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘢 𝘯𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘴𝘬𝘺 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘮𝘺 𝘱𝘶𝘳𝘴𝘶𝘪𝘵 𝘪𝘯 𝘭𝘪𝘧𝘦 𝘩𝘢𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘣𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘮𝘰𝘷𝘦 𝘢𝘸𝘢𝘺 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘦𝘱𝘪𝘤𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘳𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘮𝘺 𝘧𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘢𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘭 𝘭𝘰𝘯𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘴."

With quotes like this, the author makes his readers ponder upon some very personal sensitive issues of their lives. Sabarna Roy is certainly an author I will always trust and looking forward to reading his written act of crime thriller.

Pentacles is a collection of story and poems with some brilliant narration.

New Life - The story speaks about a young boy( Kingshuk Sen)who at a mere age of thirteen had to witness the separation of his Mother and Father. His mother fell in love with someone else and moved out of the house leaving him and his father completely shattered. The young boy was always worried about three words abandonment, love and companionship.
Eighteen years passed and the boy grew up, his father had a peaceful death and his mother wished to meet him many times but he didn't.

The next chapter is about the love that bloomed between Mr. Sen and Rohini , a married woman and older to.

The next chapter is about a phone call from Mr. Sen's past. A call from the daughter of the man with whom his mother went.
And at some point they both have gone through the same pain. The difference of families and communities is explained brilliantly.
Then follows conversation with Rohini and then a phone call from his mother where he finally decides to meet her and discuss about his plan to enter NEW LIFE.
Next are some wonderfully composed poems about chasing, tower etc.
Tara is about his childhood friend whom he meets after 26 years, with whom he was in love and always thought that happy will be the person whom Tara would marry. But, now he got to know that she herself is unhappy woman living a melancholy life.
The pain of abandonment is so correctly stated in the book.

It consists of four poem and one long story.
The story revolves around Kingshuk Sen, whose mother left him & his father for an another man. He started to develop hate for his mother & break off all the contacts with her so that he might not hurt his father who always stayed his side. Despite of all mishappening he turned out to be a successful entrepreneur.
The way author writes the poem are soothing and relaxing as his poems are always narrating some stories which are refreshing and loving.

This book consists of four poems and a tale. Speaking of the story, it was a well paced stroy, urging us to complete it in a single go. The story starts with a boy losing his mother in the drastic way possible. And how he turns up to be, how his views on earth were impacted by the turn of events.

What attracted me most was the last bit of each chapter of story where he speaks about his take on things be it love, human characters, families and societies and money. It was so informative and enlighting.

The tale also potrays how a human and his ideals, his motives every characteristics of him can change within the lifetime. Uncertainty is the only certainty.

The poems were free of rhyming schemes. It was more of a microtale. All the poems had a theme and it was further divided within, like chapters. The vocabulary was so rich and the poems were so smooth to read.

The cover was so serene invariably matching with the content inside. It was a great light read...

.
This book is a collection of a long short story and four poems. The story is : New Life, and the poems are basically narratives.
The overall theme is emotional... It is not about the story or the actions of the characters but more about what the protagonist feels and what makes him do the things he does. The poems are on various topics that are really intriguing but still less talked of like the urban culture of residential flats, the hidden desires of a girl which may seem horrible but are just, pertaining to what she's been through.

Sabarna Roy's style of conveying is a little different from others and that is precisely why we love him. He talks of the topics which are less talked of and yet conveys the emotions strongly.
Well, when I read the blurb, I thought of the story to be one of a simple boy turning into a villain when his mother leaves his father and him for another man. And it was so too, but my major focus had been on the love.. Mother's love and son's love even if they were apart, even if he wasn't ready to meet her, yet he couldn't hear one wrong word for her.
The author redefines love. Love isn't simply being together or wanting to be together. Love isn't always romantic. Love doesn't include the wish to see the other person. Love isn't something you show off or even tell others. And most importantly, you are not meant to know who you love most deeply.

That said, now about the poems,
They are written as a narrative and don't include rhyme or rhythm, but they convey strong ideas. Urban life.. Comparison of residential flats with towers, the story of Tara (if you have read it, you know there is always a Tara in a classroom! If you know what I mean😜)

Altogether, it is a book hosting a lot more than what seems. A pleasant read for all.

This book is a gem that speaks about emotions and complications of life in concurrence of real life events. This book, consists of one long short story, ‘New Life’ and four poems, The Tower, Chasing, 2001-2002 and Tara.

Reading the book, the whole impression, personally, was that there was a sense of broodiness, but sharp frankness to all the thoughts and dialogues between characters, that etched onto the mind once read. It’s a mark that ‘New Life,’ the story in the book, makes while peeking into the mind of Kingshuk Sen, the protagonist. The story itself runs seamlessly from one event to another. His pragmatism and thought-process during the story, works like a breakdown after the intense incidents and serves prelude of what follows. The story aesthete seems more of an art-house movie, which makes a deep point without expressing much.

On a personal opinion, if any character in had a striking similarity to Kingshuk Sen, my pick would be Tohru Watanabe, the protagonist of Norwegian Woods. Similarities? The thought process, the distant, indifference towards occurrences in immediate surroundings (and maybe nihilism?) and the driving force of their actions caused by love and longing are the traits that stand out between these two; the differences being the age and the awareness of greatness of self between the two characters.

The poems written have a poetic flow to them, sprinkled with metaphors and strong social commentary. The portrayal of all characters (in the whole book) in the most extreme shades is displayed; sacrifices, rage, jealousy, love, with the same intensity, though in realistic tones. It may be the case that I preferred having a little more rhythm to the poetic style of Mr. Sabarna, but it delivers nevertheless.

I personally loved the poems in ‘Chasing,’ which expertly points the dichotomy that exists in our society about equality, the illusion of happiness that comes from the community, the cloaked long running peer pressure to keep up appearances and expectations. That poem hit me the most on a personal level.

The other common trait, that you realise subconsciously after reading ‘Pentacles’ once (or twice), is the need to belong to someone. The very trait that Kingshuk explains about ‘nuclear family and community’ and uses it to advantage for making way for his growth as an entrepreneur, is the very thing all the characters in his pen flows express.

All in all, this book is the type that says more with less. It has the capability to explore, relate and empathise with the characters, despite the questionable actions. This is a great read and an engaging one, making sure you’ll read again, just to make sure you didn’t miss anything. I’m sure you will do that, because that’s how quickly the time and pages pass by when you read this.

I thank Half Baked Beans and Frog Books for publishing this book and review about it.

"People who succumb to trauma are celebrated and become heroes. In the process people who create trauma are pardoned and forgotten for life."

⚡The above lines gives us a gist of this book. The book "Pentacles" is of 118 pages published by Leadstart publications. Sadness is in everyone's life but life should not be stopped because of it. The story shows the difficulties of life, how we have to face it according to the situation even if everything is lost and we have to start life fresh.

⚡ The protagonist of the story is Mr Sen, a successful entrepreneur. He is lonely since the age of 13 because of a frightful past. He was to live with his father after his parents separated. Still he tried to lift himself up and start his life afresh with his father. He presents himself in such a way that he did not let other feel pity on their situation.
✔️This book shows that how life changes with different situation in life but it has to go on despite few rocks on the road.
✔️It shows several human relationships especially in adulthood and what impact those relationships have on the child.
✔️Single parenting is shown.
✔️Different ladies at different stages of his life is portrayed.
✔️It is a story of an adult women who leaves her husband and son. But the child stood strong even after his mother leaving him.
✔️The cover is appealing with beautiful butterfly on it.

⚡1long story and 4 short poems are there. His versus shows how to achieve freedom in life. Happiness Should be the main motto of life.

Review-
I have read most of Sabarna Roy’s book & honestly according to me “Pentacles” is one of the best of the lot. And I just came across this is author’s 2nd book after “Winter poems”. This book speaks about love, longing and effects being brought up without your mother. And this one is a flash read which the readers will finish it in a single sitting.
As the blurb says the book has a collection of one story ‘The New Life’ and four poems. Narrated by a grown up successful guy, the story is about his childhood where his mother leaves his father and him for another man. The angst and emotion of the teenager was shown here. The scars he received was inevitable. He has grown up now but he is still haunted by the dreams being deserted by his own mother. His emotions were too much raw. Everyone is this life has their own set of problems. But life shouldn’t be paused because of it. The story is a perfect blend of fiction of reality, where it shows despite inevitable loss in your life you have to get going.
The poems were about love, sacrifices, jealousy, and rage and with a bold portrayal of the socio-economic condition of India. As I always say, Roy’s poems are never rhythmic but worth a read. Intensive truly!
Overall, this book will make you feel tight from the core of your heart and make you explore different thoughts. The narration is quite exemplary and the plot of the story is engaging. Thumbs up for the cover. Looking forward to read more by Roy!

Pentacles

Cover is beautiful, it has been well designed. Title is catchy & feels appealing to the readers. This book comprises of a long story & four short poems. Plot is catchy, author picked realistic situations which reciprocate with our everyday lives. The grooving point centres around the fact that no matter what may happen or what anyone says - one must never give up in their lives.

Writing style is good. Language is simple. Narration is okay. Story is interesting. It's emotional, sensitive & touches the chord of reader's minds. Characterisation is okay. That's the only thing I liked about this book.

I felt the poems could've been a bit better. Being a poet myself I feel very skeptical enough when it comes to reading, analysing & judging poems. They don't follow any theme or figure of speech. They're mostly extrapolated in free verse style. Though the story was good. I felt the poems didn't particularly fit into this book. They don't seem to be playing any decision factor considering the theme & plot embedded into the context here.
Overall, a dissatisfactory onetime read.

Pentacles comprises of a beautiful long story and four short poems in free verse by Sabarna Roy.
The work wonderfully bridges the gap between the mundane and arcane writings of today that provides an intriguing and lovely treat to the readers.

The story 'New Life' is written in the perspective of our protagonist. It is about a successful adult whose mother had left their family for another man. The teenage angst and the scars that this has left behind on the protagonist are subtly reflected in his character and personality.

“Loneliness is like smoke. It starts from a definite point and ends up everywhere indefinitely. It eats up the soul, actually chews it to miniscule shreds, from inside and out.”

The various elements and characters present in the story are beautifully interwoven to produce an intense and compelling story of an adult haunted by the trauma of being abandoned by his mother. The story is definitely thought-provoking and hints at topics like love, heartbreak and socio-economic conditions in India.

There are beautiful poems in this collection (The Tower, Chasing, 2001-2000 and Tara) which portray different aspects of life. Some of them are more biographical in nature while the others are about love, loss and longing.

The author is undoubtedly an amazing storyteller. The only con for me was the pacing of the story which I felt was a little slow.
Overall highly recommend!

I love how beautifully the author was able to capture the protagonist’s plight and how the author portrayed the reflection of that trauma in everything the protagonist did. The way the author has discussed themes like love, vulnerability, PTSD, pain etcetera is commendable. The editing is done really nicely, loved that there were no mistakes. The writing styles was beautiful and poetic, but not poetic to the point where it was complex, it was easy comprehensible and I enjoyed every bit of it. I am still struggling to understand why the author thought of adding the poems to this book; they did not make sense to me. The story by itself was mesmerising and the poems by themselves were good but when you put them together in the same collection, it doesn’t make sense because they don’t go together. Overall, I am going to judge both the poems and the story separately and conclude that this was a good book and everybody should read this.

🌷🌷🌷⁣

"Pentacles" by Sabarna Roy is a heart-felt and soulful amalgamation of four poems and one short story especially relating to the protagonist Mr. Sen who dive in through grief and emerge as the victorious being through his mental harmony. The poems are metaphorically unique and the story portrays grief, overcoming and impenetrable depth of certain emotions which are usually unexpressed and unsaid but are thoroughly known by all at few or the other places. ⁣
I loved the philosophical take of the narration and enjoyed the story with a constant metro ride. The poems were freestyle and somewhere different in perspective which I feel that there might be something in some restraints that the words were not flown encouragingly yet the writing style is imperative in its own domain.⁣

The story and the poems are contrasting in nature and the blend of words are difficult to comprehend at some places. Although the narration is metaphorical and philosophical yet the domination of emotions in the poems is lacking somewhere which gives the book a bittersweet perspective to it. ⁣

Favourite Thoughts: ⁣
🌷Companionship is the presence of an observing soul near you who does not regulate or monitor you. It consumes you wholesomely, sensually.⁣
🌷Human characters are amplified by their reactions to trauma. People who internalize trauma are celebrated and become heroes. People who succumb to trauma are shunned and become victims.⁣

The book is recommended for those who prefer light read with a unique essence! ⁣

Name of the book - Pentacles by Sabarna Roy.
Stars given - 4 on 5 stars.
My take on the book-
So this book has one story and has a few poems as well.
The poems we're nice but as someone who really adores rhyme blank verses made a tad bit restless. I read another book by the writer, which was collection of poems and they me really likey.
Coming back to the story, I was kinda underwhelmed by it.
The ending, at least for this particular story, needed to have a proper conclusion, it just ended like a short story leaving me searching for answers. And I really didn't like the protagonist, I understand that we all are the product of our environment and society plays a big role in how we end up growing up but certain things are a big no no for me like physical violence in any way - however big or small.
Overall it was an okay read for me.

Did not expect anything less than this when I knew I was gonna read a Sabarna Roy book. Having read a few books by him before, now I'm used to his unique plots and style of writtings and know what I can expect from his works. Yet it still surprises me every time I read a new book by him.

He very meticulously manages to pay with his characters' emotional side. He always writes about contradicting topics in a way that we can't anymore decide whether its  right or wrong. His characters always show us those confusing emotions, feelings, relations. The kind that happen a lot in the society yet are not really accepted by the very society and infact are tainted as sins or wrong doings. But after reading his books, I can no more firmly say that its 'right' or 'wrong', it all goes down to perspection. And last but not the least, his philosophy on all of those feelings and topics are cherry on top. They are too deep and trust me they can be very confusing at times yet you'll still want to read more of it!

Everything I've mentioned above is there in this book too. This book consists of one long story and four short stories. I dont wanna go in details about the plots. They are the kind you'd better read yourself directly. The 1st story though, the long one is especially good in my view. Also, among all Sabarna Roy books that I've read till now, this one's definitely taking the top place for me. Do give this one a try if you like exploring such genres or something different from usual.

Book : Pentacles
Author : Sabarna Roy
Pages : 84
Format : Kindle

As mentioned in the blurb , the book is compilation of 1 short story and 4 free verse long poetry ! I am into both poetry and prose but i would point it out here because it wasn't making any sense ! I liked the characterisation done in the story ! It's not really a strong Character or a weakling but perfect to potray his journey of life post his parent !

*What I like?*
- Correct use of emotions
-Inspiring content
- The message by the book " No matter what struggle do help us reach success"

A soft read !
I would rate it 7/10

This was another thought-provoking collection by Sabaran Roy.
The story dealt with one of the major issues today, or rather, an aspect of a larger issue that is overlooked. Separation or divorces have become a more frequent occurrence today. Be it in real life, or reel life, we hear the words so very often. But how frequently do we ponder over the implications of this separation in the children's lives - the ones affected majorly by it. There was a lot of philosophy in it as the protagonist went through a period of self-analyzing and self-discovery, more or less.

The poems were overall well-meaning. However, I admittedly did not like the narrative and freestyle that the author adopted for them. This is also principally why I am rating this 3/5 stars.

A little less engaging read

This book comprises of one long story and four short poems.

The use of modern themes in daily life contributes to the compositions' appeal.

For me, this was a good one-time read. The story was too dragged on at times. At some points I was very invested in the narration but most of the time, I was struggling to figure out where is the story heading to. Maybe I don't possess the mentality to grasp the intense complexity and web of emotions in the story. I did enjoy the pieces of poetry which tells me that the author is a better poet than a prose writer. Coming on to language, it was simple, so it was quick to read but I would have loved if the story was a little more consistently engaging.

I've read other books too by the author and they were all amazing so, I had high hopes for this one too. It was overall a nice read. It contains one long story and four long story poems in the free verse. Language is easy and simple. The author has purely shown the teenage angst and scars left over the protagonist. The author has well expressed the issues like love and socio-economic conditions in India. The story is beautifully interwoven to produce an intense And compelling story of an adult hunted by the dreams of being deserted by his own mother. The book is filled with traditional rhyme And poems on love, loss and longing. Recommended!!

It’s a short read. I finished this book in a single sitting. Really enjoyed reading the story “The New Life” because plotting was phenomenal.
Made me feel like I'm in the moment when Baba dies peacefully and how our life changed after Baba's death.
I liked the story but it was a bit predictable but still, there were parts which made me wonder why would anyone do that!
I wanted to read more stories. The concept is good.
I believe reading these poems can hit anyone with nostalgia and transport them in a whole different world of theirs.
Overall a good read.I really enjoyed reading.

The story revolves around the protagonist Mr.Sen who is a renowned entrepreneur. He hardly received love from his parents as they got seperated when he was 13 .He stayed with his dad after the separation. He had a strong will and hence never stopped himself from succeeding. He worked hard and accepted his life the way it was.He never liked taking people's sympathy and that is what shaped him in becoming a strong poweful man.

The book contains one long story and 4 short poems. It highlights single parenting. You might feel the vibe of the book as sad but it is just because the author wants to show that sadness cannot ruin a person's life if the person is dedicated. In short the mesaage from the book is that happiness is the key to success. The stories are framed in such a way that potray how life changes with time .

I loved the cover as it is really soothing to look at . The language was lucid and the message that time heals everything was very clear from the book. The book could have been better if the peoms rhymed as i love poems that rhyme.Waiting to read more amazing words from the author.

After leaving, his mom paid innumerable visits to him but he refused to see as he thought meeting his mom could hurt his father.
