Anne Malcom has been an avid reader since before she can remember, her mother responsible for her book addiction. It would have been a fabulous read for me if:

🤔 insta love was better executed.
🤔 the mcs’ connection had been emotional and not so much carnal.
🤔 there were more chapters with Kane’s pov. He was awesome and I needed more of him.
🤔 the storyline was less focused on Avery and her struggles or issues. I felt Kane was left out (in general).
🤔 the lasf fourth of the book was either less experiential or pessimistic.
🤔 it had been proofread.

Yorumlarda Dark roman diyorlar. Dark romanın anlamını bile bilmeyen insanlar herşeyi Dark yaptılar ya kafayı yememek elde değil. Sadece öyle olduğu için okudum ki değilmiş ve hiç okumasamda olurmuş.

There is too much going on in this book. It felt like I was reading 3 separate stories. The timeline was confusing because the math was not adding up. I liked the idea of the book but not the execution. It was also way too insta love for me. All of a sudden they went from a one night stand to being in a relationship. No discussion at all. Beyond the main character being an “ice queen” she lacked personality or any defining characteristics. The author hinted at many traumatic events from each main characters’ past but just glossed over it. As if it was an afterthought to explain the character’s actions.

Chemistry 🥵🥵🥵🥵

Have you ever thought about what comes in a love story after the lust,the chemistry, the swoon, the happiness? Have you ever thought about the struggles your favorite romance couple may have to face, those only make them stronger and more relatable? Things We Burn by Anne Malcom takes us to the full circle of a love story.

New York's top chef Avery Hart and king of extreme sports Kane Rhodes immediately had a spark and explosions happened when their very different kind of worlds collide. But their worlds almost ended too because of the misfortune, the betrayal and the manipulation until they were brought back together by a new sweet little life. And their battles only became harder. The author concentrates on the ups and downs of motherhood here and how the small town of Jupiter became their shelter and their strength and their healer.

Anne Malcom writes top shelf book boyfriends and Kane Rhodes is no exception. He has seen trauma and loss and pain closely and so now he lives dangerously and freely. He is rich and famous and powerful but he still has deep seated abandonment issues. It came back with a vengeance when he had to go to prison while protecting his woman and Avery was forced to disappear to the small town of Juniper. It was whirlwind romance at beginning. Avery thrives on control and calmness. Kane is chaos and mess. But they fit with each other perfectly. Kane fell hard and fast and Avery fell slowly but deeply. It was electric and breathtaking and then..heartbreaking. Kane had to work through his anger and guilt and trauma while trying to be the supportive man Avery needed. Her life was thrown upside down. She never wanted to be a mother but now she cannot think about anything else. The author so beautifully portrayed the many facets of pregnancy and motherhood. The constant fear, the joy intercepted by helplessness and feeling of inadequacy, the continuous battle to figure out how to make your baby thrive without killing yourself in process...it was all there. It was very real and very inspiring and heartaching. Avery is so strong and compassionate and it broke my heart to see her so vulnerable and fragile. Kane is so deliciously alpha and he was impossibly tender and strong for his girls. I loved the town and meeting the old favorites.

This romance is unusual in that it has more plot development than most contemporary romances. it covers more years and more iterations, like a sexy version of a normal couple. The couple meet, give into their attraction, go from casual to relationship. Up til then, it's a normal-ish romance:

* opposites attract
* big-time careers
* extreme sports athlete, sexy alpha MMC
* casual affairs/ ladies man
* type A top chef, loner FMC
* both over 35
* big city (New York) setting
* casual to serious
* past trauma for both
* explicit sex
* he falls first

* ... and then things a dark turn when her former boss/ predator finds her again at her restaurant. The MMC goes crazy after the former boss slaps the FMC and nearly beats him to death. This begins a much bleaker part of the story where the MMC goes to prison for half a year. At the same, she finds herself accidentally pregnant.

And here comes the hated tricked-by-an-evil-friend/ business associate leading the dreaded miscommunication trope. It separates them for months, both thinking the other abandoned them, she left him in prison, he doesn't want the baby.

This is where she gives up her career and moves to small town Jupiter Tides, Maine. She is lonely and terrified of being a mom, but she tries to move on without him.

Fortunately, when he gets out of prison, he immediately goes and finds her; unfortunately, there are some rough moments during their reunion as they are both scarred by the other's perceived betrayal. It gets worked out quickly; however, he is enraged that she was so easily fooled and abandoned him while he sat in prison. But slowly, he starts to heal from his incarceration and get excited about her pregnancy. He retires from extreme sports, and they both take some time out from their workaholic careers to discover each other again - they've both changed- and get ready for the baby.

The next chapter of their relationship is the birth and the intense months of parenting a newborn. This is described in such detail, you know it's from personal experience. The struggles of motherhood and maintaining a relationship while going out of your mind from exhaustion and an enormous sense of failure - I think many women can relate to this part.

Luckly, her man is a real man. While the newborn phase is really rocky, they both survive it with the help of her family and members of the community (couples from the previous books). But boy, what a rough patch.

However, there is danger from an unexpected source... and I'll leave that for you to find out.

This book definitely was not romcom material. The FMC has very intense insecurities, and the MMC has to live with his childhood trauma every day. But they communicate well with each other (except the prison part)... and the MMC is the man we all wish we had in our lives: rugged, good looking, honest, smart, grounded, loyal, charismatic, and hopelessly dedicated to his woman and his baby. Swoon, sigh.

If there’s one thing Anne Malcom is going to do it’s write an amazing story full of raw emotions in a love story that echoes that of real life. It’s not perfect, it’s gritty, flawed, and at times painful. Kane and Avery were a whirlwind romance from the start trying to bring together calm and chaos. It worked though, they found a balance until inevitably life happens. Though it didn’t happen for a good portion of the book and I was on edge constantly waiting for that shoe to drop. Anne Malcom has written another amazing story full of love and life, second chances, drama, and naturally spice.

Anne Malcom doesn’t just put her heart and soul into her stories, she gives us pieces of herself and that’s no different in this book as we dive into the challenges of motherhood. I am not a mother, but I have heard so many stories of my mom holding me while cried from colic and sobbing right along with me. If you are a mother, I hope this book will fill you with validation and the feeling of being understood.

I was a little hesitant about this book at first. While it is technically a dual POV, Kane’s POV was few and far between. A lot happened in this book and I wish we could’ve seen more from his eyes.

However, this book took me for a whirlwind. I tend to feel a lot of emotions while reading books and this book was no exception.

As a mother myself, it was really nice to read about postpartum, along with the challenges that come with it from Avery’s perspective. I felt like I was able to connect with her character a lot more because I’ve been there.

Avery and Kane’s story was full of beautiful and heartfelt moments. I cried probably way more than needed during this book but that’s okay.

Cannot wait to read more of her books!

I feel like this book was written backwards?? Like idk it was honestly great at the beginning, but it just took a total turn in the middle which immediately turned me off and made me not want to finish the book. Like if she was really going for the pregnancy trope then I feel like that should have happened within the first couple chapters and him going to jail in the first couple chapters as well. Idk I personally think that the whole jail piece shouldn’t have been added. Also home girl literally believed someone else over her freaking boyfriend. Like what??!!!! Idk how she ever could have believed that Kane didn’t love or want to be with her after he literally tattooed her name on his chest. And he repeatedly tried to make sure that they were ok and tell her he loved her. So after all of that how could she ever believe that he was with others and didn’t want to be with her?? Like what. Also she literally waited a day to hear from that lawyer girl and after she didn’t decided to dip and change all her contact info. Like WHAT????! Honestly there was just a lot wrong with this book and it’s honestly so saddening after wanting to read this book for so long. Also can we just talk about how after they had the baby their relationship just…stopped?? Like idk that just didn’t make any sense to me. It’s honestly like they just gave up on eachother but then they were having sex like two seconds after she finally said something. Idk that just rubbed me the wrong way and I honestly feel like they never resolved their issues about her up and leaving to a different state. Like nothing was the same after that. They didn’t talk, act, or even seem the same which is sad.

Anne, THANK YOU from the bottom of my mama heart for letting me get my eyeballs on this early copy. Thank you for encapsulating so perfectly those first blurry moments of being a parent. This feedback is freely given and all opinions are my own.

What will catch you quickly from this story is that you aren’t working with your average romance - you’re going to get passion, steamy scenes, an MMC who’s just the right balance of edgy and gentleman - but this is a story that’s going to take you through ALL the relationship steps that exist for our MCs.

Avery Hart, while being an incredibly accomplished chef in charge of the most exclusive restaurant in New York City, has a very dull social life. Thank god her bestie and life of the party Kiera convinces her to go out - the night that changes her life forever and sets her squarely in the sights of Kane “The Devil” Rhodes. This man is walking sex-appeal, oozing danger and chaos and ruggedly attractive. When he sets his sight on Avery, he knows without a shadow of a doubt that she has something special and he does what he does best: he goes for what he wants with reckless abandon.

While they get wrapped up in the new of chemistry-filled relationship, shadows of their pasts begin to weave into their happy bubble. When Avery discovers she’s pregnant, she panics and tries to find solace in the one way she knows how: to do it all herself.

There’s extreme passion, insta-chemistry laced with poignant moments of vulnerability, betrayal of the highest order and lots of guilt, regret, hurt and anger. But there’s also the most realistic pregnancy storyline I’ve read in a very long time, along with the quiet beauty of a village coming together to support a new mother in desperate need of a network to rely on.

If you like:
- When opposites attract and one of them is absolutely READY to be lost to the chaotic nature of a super hot new relationship
- The reality that hits when someone does what’s right morally, but out of bounds and off limits according to society
- The nitty-gritty, real life part of growing through changes in a relationship
- Small towns that cherish those who become part of the community
.. this story is for you. As a mom myself, this felt like the postpartum journey that healed me through my own incredibly challenging first pregnancy. While you don’t HAVE to read the first two books of the series to read this, you’ll enjoy this one much more if you understand the dynamic of the couples that make an appearance in Avery’s life.

4.5* + fav’s list

The main thing about this book is that it did not go the way I thought it would at all. I wasn’t expecting the way this story progressed and the rollercoaster of emotions I suffered throughout this book. It went to much deeper than I thought it would, but also had so many twists and turns. I went it expecting a sports romance in a small town and it was so much more then that. I’m actually thankful for this tiktok recommendation, it was way better than I expected.
The heroine was one of my favorites, she was powerful and worked real hard for everything she got. The hero was also incredible and a good person despite his difficult start in life. They had an off the charts chemistry from the beginning. There was basically a insta-lust/love, but at the same time it didn’t seem unrealistic. I’m usually the person that hates insta-love and lives for the slow burn, but in this case their crazy love worked. It felt undeniable that they were made for each other. They did have a lot of twists and turns in their story. The shift in the middle was very big and there was a time jump, but it all made sense, even if it almost felt like 2 stories in one.
It was my first book by Anna Malcom and I loved it. Her writing was so smooth and flowed so well, I was devouring this book without even realizing it. Honestly, I almost didn’t sleep just so I could finish it. It was that level of good. So, of course, this means it went to my favorites list and I have a very strong feeling that I will be re-reading this book in the future years. Besides that, I cannot wait for her to give us one of the side characters story, I was so intrigued by the hero’s brother and I really hope she can realize this other book soon. Overall, I’m very happy I gave this amazing story a chance.

Talk about a wild ride! Things start off hot, quick and intense between Kane and Avery, but even when the brakes are pumped on their journey, the intensity never truly wanes as they navigate what fate throws their way.

Kane and Avery. These two definitely kept me on my toes. Kane, I adored because of his blunt honesty and protective nature. Avery…I found her difficult to figure out in the first part of the book, not that I didn’t like her ~ I honestly did ~ but who she says she was vs. what I was seeing didn’t really do it for me, but the second half I got a much better feel for her and fell in love with her. Their journey is all kinds of insta and intense. That is really the only way I can describe them. They are opposites and yet they are the same, so it makes for a lot of fireworks in all ways between them. Their road is a rough one, but they find a way to make it through and come out stronger in the end.

This is a great addition to the Jupiter Tides series. Things get deep and intense and there are some triggers, but they all give depth to Kane and Avery and their character growth. As for the Jupiter Tides crew, I loved catching up with Nora and Rowan, Kip and Fiona, Calliope ~ who is a fav ~ and Tina and Tiffany. As for the knewbies…I’m all about Knox, I NEED more of him, so toes crossed that his book will be coming down the chute sooner rather than later.

4.5 stars If you are a mom you need to read this

If you are a mother, read this book!

I have long awaited for Anne Malcom next book after having a little one of her own. You can tell with the Jupiter Tides series it really echoes a lot of her personal life, and this book took me through it as a mother. Kane is a daredevil in real life, and Avery is the put together Michelin chef. They meet, and his Chaos teases her control lifestyle. It was different than most of her books, having them burn hot for a good portion of the book, and I knew when Anne going to drop the emotional hammer. We'll it dropped and then the rest of the book really to me focused on Avery and her journey with becoming a mom. It mirrored a lot of the thoughts I had after having my son. I was in tears with words she had Avery say out loud. I said to myself over and over. Kane was such a great mmc that he burned so hot but then protected so fiercely. I loved seeing the rest of Jupiter tides characters again. The ending had me holding my breath. I will say now all I want to know is Knox! This book was heavy mentally from the get-go with Kane and Avery trauma and how they dealt with that in their adult life. And I love how real her couples are.

Honestly so many pages I practically skipped the end. The start of it was fast paced in the sense that a lot of events had happened within a short space of time then obviously she got 🤰 and although the author had mentioned it at the start of the book… it legit became a pregnancy help book I honestly couldn’t read all that. Ig for new mums that like a lil bit of dark romance it could be a great book. Also the “my woman” every two friggin seconds made me actually want to throw up it was cute the first time all the rest just made me want to gag because then he started sounding like a dumb caveman that couldn’t string sentences together 💀.

Things We Burn🔥🏍️🧑‍🍳

Things We Burn is a part of the Jupiter - small town series and is a great story❣️

Avery gets invited to a social event with her bestie. She doesn’t really want to go as she’s been working all day and needs to be up early the next morning. But when she locks eyes with a sexy, tattooed man across the room, she’s suddenly not so upset her friend dragged her out.

Kane is the complete opposite to Avery, while she’s cool and composed, he’s fire and warmth🥰 But he’s able to reach her in a way no one else has. This story is complex and full of real life experiences such as motherhood and everything that falls under that umbrella as well as relationships and how they change during this phase of life.

Loved Kane and Avery and I’m hoping there’s a book for Knox as he also deserves a HEA🤞I received an advanced copy and willingly leave my honest review❤️‍🩹

Really loved the first half of this book; their dynamic was everything and you could feel how intensely they felt toward each other. Second half was good, but parts were ok or just didn’t hit the mark for me. However, extremely empowering message in the second half that made it much better. I cannot wait for Knox’ book though, I fear I may eat that one up :)

Tropes: golden retriever mmc x black cat fmc, obsessed/possessive mmc, he falls first, second chance, accidental pregnancy, found family

THIS BOOK 😍😭 IF YOU ARE A MOTHER, this book will take you back to the early days.

This book was a journey for sure.

These two met and the feelings were just undeniable.

Avery is a Michelin chef in NY and Kane is an extreme sports athlete. Their life and relationship goes from casual, hot and intense to into a relationship and feels very normal.

Until something happens and shadows of Avery’s past show up seep into their bubble and Kane goes to prison for protecting her. While there, she takes off to a small town- Jupiter Tides and we get to see some of the previous characters.

There is so much passion and so many REAL & RAW moments in this story. In their relationship and struggles of early motherhood.

4 ⭐️ 2 🌶️

Opposites attract • chef x extreme sports athlete • he falls first • surprise pregnancy • big city to small town

I really loved this story between Avery and Kane - his devotion to her from the beginning made me giddy. My heart did break at what happened when Kane was sent away and I had to hold back tears as I got super emotional during it. Then I felt the “being new parents” part of the story was written so beautifully and I also struggled with my emotions as their experience as parents mirrored my own. Such a beautiful story and so well written!

Because I’m obsessed with the men Anne Malcom writes I obviously loved Kane!!

The end of the book was not as good as the first say 80% of the book which I absolutely loved. But the pregnancy trope was done so well (can’t say the same for a lot of other books)

I love the Jupiter series and I’m also excited for Knox’s book 😍

Given the slow start and overly detailed inner dialogue and based on the authors note, and my skim forward, this was going to be a book that’s too heavy for me. Think I’m going to pass on this one. Decided not to finish after 6%
