EDIT : I originally gave this 4 stars in 2016 when I was 19... Now at 26 I'm rereading this and wtf. My changes in thought definitely reflects the maturity level of the characters: the fact that they resonated so heavily with me at 19, and conversely now baffle me is an indictment of how glaringly one dimensional they are. Jessica is in her late 20s and yet thinks like an immature, insecure 18 year old. She violates the privacy of her partner, looks at photos she isn't supposed to, looks through his phone, etc. I could go into so much more but basically, rereading this pair of books now in my mid-20s, I'm not even close to as dazzled as I was before. The books are still decent, but not what I remember. The characters are exhausting at times, the plot is weak compared to the first book, and the constant wishy washy nature of Jessica and Kyle's relationship is ridiculous. They're almost 30. Grow up.
Previous review, 2016 : This book is such a lovely sequel to the perfect first book. Yes, it's definitely not as good as the first one but it's still nice, easy read. I absolutely ADORED how this book starts only two days after the end of the first book! I hate it sometimes when authors don't answer all my questions and leave things open, but this sequel answered all my wishes! I got to learn what happened between Jess and Kyle, how Alex reacted to Jess's marriage refusal, and I loved learning about the next mystery that resulted after the attack in the last book. This book duo was fantastic because it ends beautifully, cleanly, and happily predictable (I say this because I kind of knew how it was going to end, but it wasn't super obvious the whole time and there was a lot of questions whether or not things were going to work out the way I had predicted). Just like the first book, I reacted so much while reading this book: laughing with Jess, groaning at Kyle's refusal to give up Avery yet understanding his intentions, cursing Melanie for her manipulation, and trying to solve the mystery along side Jess. I love how multi-faceted these characters are; for example, Melanie is of course manipulative towards Kyle, but it's clear that her intentions are meant to be good because she just wants a loving family for her daughter. In my opinion, none of the characters were cookie cutter, unflawed, anything like that. They were real to me and the story was incredible. I really identified with Jess's trust issues and her battle with jealousy. I can understand how some people may not have liked Jess because she was a little insecure, but not everyone is a perfect badass who does everything right. Some people have anxiety and worries and aren't completely comfortable in their own skin. I loved Jess and loved seeing her grow; when she took charge of her life and turned the tables on the villain I was so happy for her. I was thrilled with how this book ended and so happy for Jess and Kyle. Yes it wasn't as good as the first one but it was a great ending to the story.
