There is a vast history of the development of the art of acting. Professor Cleberg blends this history with practical application as he provides thirty-eight observations that arose while he was preparing his role for a production of Lauren Gunderson’s play, The Book of Will. Citing many traditional acting techniques and devices, Cleberg provides insights about how an emerging actor can “learn the rules in order to learn how to break the rules.” Through specific examples, the author demonstrates how breaking traditions inspires new discoveries.
Simply put, Steve has constructed a fascinating performance manual. Any experienced performer will see not so much new information as reminders. And to think, all of this came about through journaling while working a production! We should all be doing more of this.
