The atmosphere in this book? Creeptastic! It’s like you can practically feel the cold, abandoned beach resort lurking behind every corner. Plus, there's this perfect balance of mystery, teenage drama, and a bit of that eerie paranormal element that keeps you guessing. 👀 Is the killer human? Is it a ghost? The twists and turns will leave you second-guessing everything you think you know.
The mystery unfolds nicely, and even though I guessed a few things along the way, the twists at the end were still mind-blowing. Like, I did not see that coming. 😵
Now, let’s talk about the narration! Jennifer Jill Araya did an incredible job bringing the tension and suspense of this story to life. She perfectly captured the eerie vibes of the setting and really nailed the emotions of the characters. From Eden’s inner struggles to the creepy atmosphere, Jennifer’s voice made everything feel even more immersive and intense. 👏

Everyone knows the legend of Fairpoint Village, an abandoned beach resort. 25-years ago, a murder closed the place down and soon the ruins will be demolished for good.
Eden has heard the lore about Fairpoint all her life. They say anyone who sets foot there will be cursed to die, and that has happened a couple of times over the years, when students daring to explore the ruins where killed.
Before the scheduled demo can take place, an overnight party is planned for the ruins. Eden reluctantly attends to assist her friend, Henry, with doing some filming.
She's nervous about going, more because of the other kids that will be there as opposed to the lore of the ruins. Since Eden's Dad ditched town after taking part in a little white-collar crime, she's sort of been a social pariah.
Most concerning to her is being anywhere near her ex-best friend, Caleb. They were so close as kids, but since Freshman year, Caleb has barely given her the time of day.
Unfortunately, the party night takes a horrifying turn and now more kids are dying. Is it the haunting of the ruins, or something much closer to home, that is now stalking these teens and trying to take them out one-by-one?
The 1st-book I read from this author, They're Watching You, was only 2-stars for me and I was hesitant to pick up anything from Ichaso after that. However, when I read the synopsis for this one, I knew I had to give it a shot.
I'm so happy to report that We Were Warned ended up being a a very solid 4-star read for me. I can't even tell you how excited I was to be gripped by this one from the start.
It kept me entertained and guessing throughout. I thought the pace was great and I loved the character dynamics. There was a lot of drama, both with the kids and their parents, and I'm always down for that.
My favorite aspects were the mysterious lore of this town and watching Eden have to work together with a group of kids who didn't necessarily start out as her friends.
I thought Ichaso did a wonderful job with the characters, particularly with Eden and Caleb. Their relationship was complicated from the start, and I felt like all of their interactions felt realistic. The way that relationship changed throughout the book, also made sense and felt organic.
Additionally, I really enjoyed Eden's growth as a character. The way she started to come out of her shell and started to assert herself more with her peers as she gained confidence.
I did enjoy the conclusion as well, although certain aspects started to get a little muddled towards the end. Overall, I thought it was very well-executed.

Guess what? I finally LOVED a YA novel!!! Yay for me!!!
I was gripped to this story right from the start. From there, it never lets up!

Man, I was really into this book! It had all the right vibes for a horror story. The eerie setting and foreshadowing had just the right touches.
Read this if you love — Final Destination, I Know What You Did Last Summer, Scream

However kids have continued to party in the ruins because…well, if there’s a place, kids are going to go there to drink beer, smoke dope and have sex….not that _I_ ever did any of those things, of course. Pure as the snow, was I! But I digress.
Now two of the kids have been killed, leaders no to talk of a curse. And today Eden Stafford, a pariah of the high school is working on a documentary with another student when, again, tragedy strikes. Can Eden and her enemies figure out what is happening?
This is YA for YAs, definitely and I’ve rated it as such. It’s not bad from that standard, but not the greatest, either.

mystery thriller mixed with a bit of romance? give! me!! more!!!
i was hooked from the start. the pace was good, i really loved eden - she was a perfect fmc. but then lot of things started getting on my nerves, especially caleb. make up your mind? who's side are you really on??? something about him just felt off sometimes and that made me irritated (and i really loved him in the first half😩). i also didn’t really enjoy the ending, after the whole discovery, it seemed a bit rushed. and we were also left with many unanswered questions??
that being sad, it wasn’t a bad story and i still enjoyed it!! will for sure try other chelsea’s books <3

We Were Warned was an excellent read with an intriguing mystery surrounding an abandoned beach resort.
Eden Stafford has heard about the legend of Fairport Village all of her life and how anyone who sets foot on the property is cursed to die. But then Eden finds herself agreeing to help a film student with a project about the legend and that means going to the resort. After a student is found dead on the property and the police rule the death an accident, Eden knows she saw something suspicious at the ruins. But the only other people who agree with her are the people who have made her life hell for years. Can Eden really trust that they'll help her find the truth?
We Were Warned opens with Eden arriving at Fairport Village to help Henry De Rossi with his documentary about the legend of the resort. Before the end of the night a student from the high school is found dead on the property and Eden is sure the death isn't an accident like the police say it is. The premise of this one sounded like so much fun and I was curious to see how the whole curse thing would end up playing out. Eden ends up having to work with the group of students that have been tormenting her for years to find the truth as they were with her when something strange happened before the discovery of the body.
The students Eden is working with are Caleb Durham, Jameson O'Sullivan, Diego Rodriguez, and Victoria Whitlock. Initially she doesn't trust them at all and has a hard time agreeing to work with them to figure out what happened. After someone else dies, the group becomes worried they could be targeted next and they put aside their differences to figure out what happened at Fairport Village. At this point I had a few ideas of who was behind the deaths of the students and I was interested to see how Eden and the others would figure out who was responsible. The suspense picks up as the book goes on and the ending where the group confronts the person responsible is fantastically done. I was surprised by who ended up being behind everything and I was happy with how the situation played out.
Overall We Were Warned was a great read and I would highly recommend it if you're looking for an interesting mystery.

I loved Chelsea Ichaso’s release from last year and I excited when I saw she was releasing another book this year. Unfortunately this one I didn’t enjoy as much as the previous.
I’m not sure what exactly didn’t work for me. There were a lot of characters and dynamics you are introduced too and trying to navigate that as well as the mystery right away just didn’t flow or work. A lot of elements felt unfinished at times and not flushed out. Although this didn’t work for me, I am excited for whatever this author does next! I will always love YA thriller/mystery!

Okayy, it might sound like I'm overreacting but trust me when I say that I haven't read a thriller this fast in ages!! I literally listened to the audiobook in two sittings & when I wasn't reading it the previous day, all I could think about was getting back to the Fairport Village and the lore in here to find out what was really happening!!!!
To back it up, we follow Eden Stafford who accompanies the film club student, Henry & the entire senior year of high school to spend the overnight in the creepiest resort in their small town, Fairport Village. Henry plans to capture the place as part of his documentary in which he wants to explain the lore and the deaths behind the place, and Eden acts as his filming assistant. It's said that anyone who sets foot in the resort is cursed & will face their death very soon. And when one of their students dies, everyone panics that they're cursed as well and Eden is dead set on finding out what's really happening & also to find a way to save themselves.

The resort and the lore surrounding it was creepy from the start, and the way the story is told to you sends shivers down your spine (trust me, listen to this on audio & you'll get what I mean)...I even had to stop at the halfway point on the first day cuz I cannot bear to listen to it at night🥶🥶 This unsettling vibe persists throughout the novel and keeps you on edge as well, and I was also amazed at the way the author was able to grasp my interest from the start till the finish line!!! And the chapters end in cliffhangers too making it so hard to put it down unless you don't want the answers immediately which will never be the case in this book cuz YOU WOULD WANT THE ANSWERS OR THE SUSPENSE WILL DRIVE YOU MAD!!
The characters were well-written & rounded too & extremely relatable if you think about the time when you were a teenager. They're not perfect in any opinion cuz who in their high school was?!! And that's what I loved about them cuz they were written realistically - flawed, whiny at times, jealous, but also incredibly headstrong when it comes to getting answers or doing things they're warned not to do!!! And Eden definitely has captured my heart by being strong & persistent throughout the novel by going after the mystery to find out whether the killer was a supernatural entity or a real person. She never stops even when faced with threats cuz she wants to find the truth about what caused the death of the person she trusted, and I liked this tenacious quality of her.
And I gotta admit I wasn't a fan of Victoria & Jameson at the start but they really redeemed themselves in the end imo & I did like this reluctant gang of mystery solving teenagers!!
And I gotta applaud Jennifer Jill Araya for bringing life into the story through her narration!!! The characters' pauses, tension, fear, mockery, & everything was perfectly executed by her and it was like I was compelled to keep listening to the audiobook bcoz of her wonderful narration. I gotta admit that I'm gonna be checking out more audiobooks narrated by her.
Overall, if you're looking for a YA thriller that has both supernatural & mystery combined with an incredible FMC & an amazing audiobook, you have to check this out!
Okayy, it might sound like I'm overreacting but trust me when I say that I haven't read a thriller this fast in ages!! I literally listened to the audiobook in two sittings & when I wasn't reading it the previous day, all I could think about was getting back to the Fairport Village and the lore in here to find out what was really happening!!!!
To back it up, we follow Eden Stafford who accompanies the film club student, Henry & the entire senior year of high school to spend the overnight in the creepiest resort in their small town, Fairport Village. Henry plans to capture the place as part of his documentary in which he wants to explain the lore and the deaths behind the place, and Eden acts as his filming assistant. It's said that anyone who sets foot in the resort is cursed & will face their death very soon. And when one of their students dies, everyone panics that they're cursed as well and Eden is dead set on finding out what's really happening & also to find a way to save themselves.

The resort and the lore surrounding it was creepy from the start, and the way the story is told to you sends shivers down your spine (trust me, listen to this on audio & you'll get what I mean)...I even had to stop at the halfway point on the first day cuz I cannot bear to listen to it at night🥶🥶 This unsettling vibe persists throughout the novel and keeps you on edge as well, and I was also amazed at the way the author was able to grasp my interest from the start till the finish line!!! And the chapters end in cliffhangers too making it so hard to put it down unless you don't want the answers immediately which will never be the case in this book cuz YOU WOULD WANT THE ANSWERS OR THE SUSPENSE WILL DRIVE YOU MAD!!

We Were Warned is a spooky and atmospheric read! The plot is incredibly layered with murders, the ongoing fallout from an embezzlement scam, and teenage angst, all woven against the backdrop of small town lore.

The Mystery Gang (minus a goofy yet loveable anthropomorphic animal sidekick and questionably painted van) if they were really bad at the one thing they were supposed to be good at and Fred hooked up with Velma instead of Daphne and was really g0dd@mn annoying about it the whole time. a fast paced, YA mystery that left me completely shocked! i really enjoyed reading this one. at every single turn, i just wanted more and more! this plot was incredible and unique, i was amazed!

I’m so incredibly frustrated by the ending.
It’s probably just a personal preference, but I get annoyed when we have that whole “villain reveals all” monologue like you see in old superhero movies. It also annoys me when the main character suddenly has an epiphany and now knows every single truth and lie in the mystery. Again, I think it’s a me thing, as it seems a lot of mysteries go that way. You’d think I’d learn, but…
I also feel like there were some loose ties in the end that I wouldn’t have even thought of had the MC not put them in my head. So, that was rude.
Other than that, the angsty drama was pretty flimsy and I’m not sure if I actually even liked any of the characters. However, the book is YA and I’m pretty sure teenaged Lindsey would’ve really enjoyed it, so I suppose that’s what matters here.

Sourcefire Books has been releasing some of my favorite thrillers lately. I’ve kind of stepped away from young adult reads for a bit and they pulled me right back in. I’m definitely now ashamed to admit that.
A spooky urban legend, mysterious murderess all dressed in black, and a badass lovable main character who deserves it all.
This one here blew me away. Yes, the ending was very predictable but the atmosphere was amazing and the story have me glued to the pages.

Even though this book wasn’t for me, I can still say it’s a good mystery thriller especially for a young adult audience. It has the same vibes as teen Netflix shows like Riverdale. The author’s writing doesn’t feel juvenile at all—she did a great job telling the story, and the mystery at the end was sooo good. I didn't see it coming!
But what kept me from fully enjoying this book was the characters’ lack of logical decision-making. I tried to be patient. Really. But when the characters make decisions with the IQ of a potato, it’s hard not to scream internally. I keep reminding myself they're teenagers and this is YA but I’ve read middle grade books with more emotionally grounded characters.
The romance also felt off. The main character, Eden, was insufferable. Her feelings about Caleb changed every other page. One minute she’s done with him, the next she’s all over him. Girl, please, make up your mind. Also, are we just going to forget that Caleb let his friends bully Eden for years? Then suddenly, we’re supposed to root for them as a couple? I just couldn’t buy into it.
What made it worse was Caleb’s female best friend—who’s constantly clinging to him and clearly blurring boundaries. If he truly liked Eden, wouldn’t he at least set some clear lines? It felt like common sense was missing. And the fact that he never got mad at his best friend for manipulating him into thinking Eden hated him? That really bothered me.
Anyways, do I recommend this book?

This book grabbed my attention from the very beginning with its eerie and mysterious atmosphere. There were moments when it felt like I was reading a horror story, which genuinely freaked me out in a good way. I loved how unpredictable the plot was, with so many twists and turns. Overall, it was an incredibly gripping read, and I had so much fun reading it!

All I want in a YA thriller is for the mystery to be fun and this book delivered! Though the writing was a bit clunky at times (a bit confusing or it felt out of character slightly) I still had a fun time trying to figure out who was behind it all!
I was also quite surprised (in the best way!) to see the author didn't shy away from having real big stakes, I felt the characters were truly in danger.
I'll look at the author's other books 👀

don’t waste your time on this book. the writing sounds like a 6th grader wrote it. the plot was weak and character development was awful. the whole book was easily predictable and could’ve been half the length it was.

Now this was actually a bit spooky. It's more of a thriller than horror, but some scenes were very suspenseful. In the last two books I read, the teens made all the wrong choices, but in this book, I was pleasantly surprised - they actually made decent deductions and always went in pairs/groups everywhere.
The pace was so good, there were literally no boring gaps or filler content. Multiple times throughout the story you're gonna get some new information and you're gonna have some theories but you're probably not gonna guess what actually happened 😂 The plot twists at the end especially made this book one worth checking out.

It was surprisingly clean and not gory. I personally thought that it was going to be a bit of a supernatural thriller, but it was more of a normal... thriller? I hate to call it a thriller because I wasn't really spooked at all. There were lots of instances of teenagers being incredibly brainless (like, oh! Let's sneak into this decrepit house without telling anyone at allll, this will be GREAT!), but overall a perfectly passable read!

The plot and the concept were both really good and I did enjoy it. However the characters were where this book struggled. I didn't connect with any of them, most of the times I was just frustrated at their choices since they all seemed to be lacking some common sense with the decisions they made. I will say tho the romance was pretty cute and I didn't hate it but it just wasnt enough to get me to like the characters.
Like I mentioned the plot is good, I couldn't tell who/what was responsible during the book which was good.
I really like the audiobook narrator they did a very good job with the book.

I was under the impression when I picked this up it was written for an adult audience, however upon reading it is clearly written for teenagers/YA. I don’t mind teen screams as a genre for thriller/horror/slasher but the tropes were predictable and the writing at points was cringy. Not a terrible storyline overall but clearly this was written for a younger audience than myself.
