There’s no place like home… until you stumble over a body in your yarn shop.

After spending twelve years in New York City, fiber influencer Sadie Sexton didn’t expect to find herself living back in her hometown of Hoochville, Tennessee. But when her grandmother bequeaths her beloved yarn shop to Sadie and her sister Charmayne with the stipulation that they must run it together for a year, Sadie and her dog Peaches find themselves back in the small Appalachian town.

Despite the somewhat contentious relationship with her older sister, Sadie is enjoying spending time with her childhood besties and Clementine Parker, her Grandma Mae’s best friend and the woman she thinks of as her second grandmother. But the enjoyment is cut short when she finds a body in the yarn shop and the prime suspect is none other than Clem herself.

Now Sadie is on a mission to clear Clem’s name. With her besties committed to helping in any way they can, she’ll stop at nothing to make sure Clem stays out of the slammer, even if it means cozying up to the town sheriff. Who just happens to be the same boy who broke her heart over a decade ago.

I liked most of the characters. They had quirky personalities and were kind of interesting.

I did not like Sadie at all. I thought she was obnoxious. I didn't care much for her sister Charmayne either, but the more I read about Sadie, the more I understood some of Char's feelings. I thought Sadie was arrogant, disrespectful, selfish, and condescending. I disliked the way she treated Reed. It seemed very rude to me that Sadie continuously made Reed aware she obviously did not think he was capable of doing his job.

Her behavior was not cute or quirky. I also thought Sadie was severely lacking common sense. At NO point did she ever seem to think she might be in danger by investigating a murder with a killer being on the loose.

Sadie's husband was a detective with NYPD. Did she interfere in his cases? Did she think he was incompetent and couldn't do his job without her assistance? How could she act like she wasn't going to accept what Reed was telling her? Supposedly she couldn't date Reed because his job was dangerous and she couldn't go through that kind of loss again. YET, she thought nothing of inserting herself into dangerous situations with absolutely no training or thought of consequences.

I also did not appreciate Reed thanking her for solving the case. She ran through Reed's case like a bull in a China shop, or a possum in a yarn shop.

I did like the twist at the end. I thought the narration was nicely done. I am interested in reading or listening to the next book in the series. I can only hope that Sadie is not as unpleasant. I could have definitely rated this higher if not for her character.

This was really good! i was hoping for more yarn and textiles, based off the title and Sadie's "big city job", but there are other books in hte series, lol. (a yarn junkie can hope right, lol) So, one thing i generally hate about cozy mysteries is the whole, "this only happens becuase she is nosy and magically has access to all this information." This book, is the exact opposite. Sadie was perfectly happy to let the cops handle it until it affected Clem. and even then, she kept trying to back off, but was super frustrated because every time she asked the sherrif wouldn't tell her anything. (which i get, but dude you want her to butt out, giver her a reason to butt out) And Sadie didn't magically have access to things. She had friends and connections and how she got her information was explained and logical and sometimes there were gaps in her knowledge becuase she couldn't get her hands on something. this book felt very real. And i love the friends Sadie has. they are so funny and supportive and not afraid to dig in and help. even if it's not one of the small group. How they treated Sugar, helped her says it all.

This is a terrific start to a new series! I was instantly drawn in and didn’t want to put the book down until the last page was turned. There is plenty of humor, suspense, and so much with the pages of the story that will appeal to everyone. I am looking forward to what happens next.

Cute mystery

I mostly enjoyed the book. Coming from Tennessee though, the double names (first and middle) were a bit much. Fun read overall.

I really didn't know what to expect when I started listening to this story By new author to me Ramey James..I thought it was a romantic comedy..lol..But No it was totally different than what I thought.
Now I don't usually listen or read books that aren't romance..I love romance and so never feel the need to try anything else, because romance has everything that I want.
Alpacas and Alibis is not a romance and I didn't mind it at all..this is a murder mystery story based in a small town...It reminded me of those shows on TV you watched in the 80's like murder she wrote etc..
Anyway Sadie is the main character and our super sleuth poking her nose in when she is not supposed to..Sadie is back in town for 1 year after her Gran dies and she is there to run her Gran's shop with her sister Charmayne.
Then one night Sadie finds a dead body in the shop and the murder weapon is a knitting needle the main suspect is her gran's best friend Clementine Parker.
Clem is like family to Sadie and along with her group of friends she is determined to prove Clem's innocence.
This doesn't go over too well with new sheriff Reed Hawkins the man who broke her heart...So of course Reed and Sadie clash at every turn because of her interferring...There is a spark between them but nothing happens as Sadie will not be involved with anyone working in law enforcement...The reason is because of her deseased husband who was a cop.
What ensues is a bit of an adventure as we follw Sadie try to solve a murder and getting into trouble doing so..We are introduced to the quirky characters of the small town of Hoochville..and we are left with the prospect of another mystery in the future.
This whole book was fantastically Narrated by Tiffany Morgan who performs ALL the characters in this book...she really makes the story come to life with her voice acting talent and I loved listening to her.
Alpacas and Alibi's is a wonderful audiobook and it was such a pleasure to listen too..full of twists and turns, wit, humour and suspense...I am now totally invested with Hoochville and all the characters in this town. I enjoyed Ramey James's writing and I can't wait for more.
Loved it.

If you grew up enjoying the Dukes of Hazard series, this book is for you! If you have no idea who the Duke’s are but you like kick ass women who stand by each other and are supportive without being mean or hateful this is for you too.

Charmayne and Sadie Mae are sisters, whose parents passed while Sadie was in high school. Her sister Char was a newlywed and refused to take her in after their parents died in an accident. So Sadie lived with her grandmother Mae until she went off to college. She met and married a NYC detective and had her dream job… until one day her husband was killed. Just as she’s getting past her loss her beloved grandmother Mae dies leaving her and Char equal parts of her yarn store. Char is fit to be tied! However, the girls must run the store together for one year before ownership changes can be made.

Upon arriving from bowling Sadie trips over what she thought was a mannequin… nope it’s a dead body! Before the Sheriff can enough arrive her sister Char charges in. After identifying the victim she promptly cast suspicion on Clem, their grandmother's best friend. Throughout the story we meet the ex who broke her heart, the male school friend who always has her back, and the girlfriends who are more like sisters. The cast of characters will leave you with tears sliding down your face at their antics and a smile over how much they care! Honestly, the murder portion became secondary to me. I was more enamored with the relationships between all of the characters. And just when you thought the book was over… I’ll be damned if the authors didn’t drop a bomb and get you hooked right back. I flipped pages like you wouldn’t believe!
The next book, Buttons & Blackmail, can’t arrive soon enough for my liking… because I wanted it yesterday!

5 stars an all around wonderful book with characters that will draw you in and not let go.

Finding the Truth . . .

Sadie Sexton left her career in New York to return home to Hoochville, TN, when her grandmother died and left her a yarn shop which she and her sister, Charmayne, were required to run jointly for a year. Reunited with Clementine Parker, her Grandma Mae’s best friend, made up for having to deal with her grouchy older sister. But returning from bowling night with her friends, Sadie entered the back door of the semi-dark yarn shop to retrieve a crochet project she had been working on earlier -- and tripped over a woman’s body in the dark! The stranger had been stabbed in the eye with a knitting needle and did not survive.

Fortunately Sadie’s high school ex-boyfriend Reed Hawkins, who is now the Sheriff, had given her his business card and home number. She called him and he raced to the scene of the crime. While he was questioning Sadie, her sister Charmayne pushed her way in and exclaimed, “Clementine finally had enough and killed her!” -- which of course pointed a finger at Clem, the woman Sadie loves like a second grandmother, who becomes the primary murder suspect! Will Sadie and her friends insist on helping to prove Clem’s innocence? Will Reed try to stop her? Or will they track down Ruby Potts’ real murderer? You won’t want to miss this adventure penned by an awesome duo of authors! For those who prefer the audiobook version, the narrator, Tiffany Morgan, will bring the “reading” experience alive for the listener. She does a great job with the voices to personalize the story and make it easy for the listener to get an accurate impression of what each character is like. It helps to set the mood, familiarize the reader with the characters, and offers a pleasant way to “read” and enjoy the book.

Mostly enjoyable. I was a little bothered by the character of the characters. The protagonist's sister is vicious towards her throughout the book. I do hope later books in the series provide some clarity and hopefully resolution. The interactions between them were so over the top without a clear understanding of why. Also, the protagonist and her friends spend an excessive amount of the time in the book either gossiping or drinking. A mention here or there, no problem. But the book definitely overemphasized these, portraying them as traits of an ideal lifestyle. Normally town gossips are cast by elderly ladies. But here, two younger women almost compete to see who has the biggest scoop on the town. Gossip is so destructive, and while, yes, it is helpful when trying to solve a crime, I don't like that it is outright celebrated here.

And at times it did get a bit ridiculous. I almost put the book down when the protagonist and her friends thought it a great idea to use inner tubes to chase down a guy in a boat... Needless to say, that chase did not end well. Nevertheless, I continued reading.

I really liked the new story opportunity that opened at the very end, leading to the next books. Because of that new and intriguing storyline, I would be up for trying the next in the series though the characters were not my favorite.

“Mind your own knitting”

Ohh I absolutely loved this new mystery series!! Sadie finds herself back in Hoochville, TN working alongside her sister at a yarn shop and finds herself investigating a murder case to clear her second grandmothers name.
I absolutely love Sadie and her besties. They are a hoot and had me laughing with their funny banter, and small town antics. There is a possible love interest or two but I feel like Sadie needs some time to heal and discover herself. I really enjoyed the mystery and I couldn’t figure out who was behind it. I’m very eager to find out what happens next with the revelation that was revealed towards the end. I hope to see more of Peaches, and Sadie.
I thoroughly enjoyed Tiffany Morgan’s narration. I did listen to the audiobook at a 2.2x so YMMV but I thoroughly enjoyed the tones and inflections used. I felt like she portrayed the many emotions that the story invoked in Sadie. Tiffany kept me engaged till the very end!

A very special thanks to the author for the gifted ALC.

Alpacas and Alibis by Ramey James review due 8/15/24
Sadie & her Girl Gang

What a good collaboration! The girl gang and the authors.

Sadie needed to work with her sister to maintain the yarn shop her grandmother had bequeathed to them. She and her sister did not get along even before a dead body was found in the shop. Sadie is determined to rescue the woman accused of the crime. She was their deceased grandmother's best friend. Sadie knew her well and knew she could not have done it.

Having returned home for her grandmother's funeral and to comply with her wishes, she now had a murder to solve as well as dealing with the local police, and the man who she once loved the sheriff.

The story has it all, mystery, danger, romance, great characters, and more. I pride myself on figuring out the culprit in most mysteries I read. I couldn't guess this one. Good luck if you try.

There is at least one more book in the series. I hope that is just the beginning.

A great start!

When two of your favorite people come and create a book baby, you know it is going to be good!

I always say that Ms. Chase writes the friends you want to have in your life. This book is filled with laughter, woman-power and the sayings of my southern upbringing. It is as satisfying as a warm hug.

Sadie is New York transport who is dragged back to her hometown of Hoochville, reeling from the 1-2 punch of losing her husband and the grandma who raised her. She and her older sister are forced to work together to run their grandmother's yard shop. After a year, one of them can buy the other out and it is questionable if they will be able to repair what's left of their tenuous relationship. Seriously, what climbed up her sister's derriere and died?

This book is filled with old fears, new hopes and a concerning amount of booze considering it is set in a dry city. I can't wait to see where the authors take us next!

I have been provided with a review copy of Alpacas and Alibis from the author and I am voluntarily leaving an impartial review. Alpacas and Alibis is the first book in the brand-new A Sadie Sexton Hoochville Mystery series and this was an interesting way to start off a new series. This was an enjoyable story. The characters were quirky and really easy to get along with. I really found them interesting and loved everyone’s interactions. You could tell there was true friendship and love between most of the characters. My only complaint is that not a lot happens in this book and I believe there were some unnecessary scenes so if the story had been reduced in size about 30-35% it would have been a much better story and wouldn’t have dragged at certain points. Other than that I really enjoyed this book and would definitely read more books in this series.

This is my first listen from Ramey James. Loved it. It will grab your ears and you’ll listen till the end . The author wrote a story that had great word building. The characters were engaging.
Sadie Sexton didn’t know once she went back home she would have an adventure on her hands . There is lots going on her grandmother burial , sharing a store with her sister . But the main thing is she doesn’t believe her grandmother best friend Clementine murdered a lady . Clementine Is charged with the murder, but the murdered lady husband is acting very suspicious.
Who actually murdered her . Grab it and you’ll love the story. I sure did
This is actually my first listen by Tiffany Morgan. She did all the scenes and Characters great

This book was a quick read with an interesting story and engaging characters. It has a murder mystery with several twists. I enjoyed the humor.,

I loved this debut novel and can't wait to read the next book in the series!! The characters are well written and I had no clue who did it until when it was figured out by Sadie. I had a clue but felt like no, it can't be him. I hope at some point in the series Sadie will give in to Reed. Although I do understand her fears. The friend group is one I would love to be a part of. I look forward to reading more about the twist at the end. Due to both my personal and professional life, I find this twist intriguing. It's a topic not talked about enough, and I can't wait to read more about it! I already pre-ordered book two and can't wait until November!!

Fun and new sleuthing crew to follow

Sadie and her crew are hysterical, adventurous, and get into some crazy shenanigans... Just the kind of crew I dream of being in. There is enough snarky humor between Sadie and her sister to keep the tension. Add in the spark of a love triangle to keep some passion going between Sadie and two guys and I am hooked! Fans of Jana DeLeon and Angie Fox will find this series as addictive as theirs. The southern references are comical and the age range for the cast of characters make this likeable for all generations. Can't wait for the next adventure!!!!

I was hooked from the beginning! Sadie goes back home after her grandma dies to help her sister run their grandma's yarn shop. When Sadie literally stumbles on a dead body things get very interesting. Sadie has three great friends that help her out and always have each others backs. These four gals make life interesting. Sadie realizes the sheriff is her first love and is keeping a distance kind of. Hoochville is such a great town with the gossip chain. This book made you laugh with their sayings and wives tales. The ending was a surprise and I am looking forward to reading more of this series! Found a new author that is going to be one of my favorites!

Funny First in the Series

Set in the small town of Hoochville, this first in the Sadie Sexton series had me laughing out loud over and over. The characters display fierce loyalty to one another, while Sadie’s grumpy sister Char is someone you just want to hate but can’t. With Sadie leading the way, she and her group of friends look for the real killer to free her grandmother’s best friend, Clem, from suspicion. With investigative plans that seem like a good idea, hilarity ensues with Sadie and her friends. There’s a unique twist at the end that has me ready to pick up the next book in the series.

The mystery didn’t captivate me on this one. It was a soft mystery and gave older Nancy Drew. Yet the writing was good but the characters were hard to connect with and with ALL the double names it was hard getting everyone straight. To the very end I’m still not sure who everyone was and it felt lik there were new characters being introduced well into the end of the book. It was too much for me. The main character and her sister were so mean towards each other and equally didn’t give off “good” vibes. The love triangle didn’t add anything for me especially since it didn’t go anywhere with either man.

Sometimes you CAN go back home again! Sadie Sexton leaves NYC after building up a successful career and life there. She's back in Hoochville TN to hopefully leave some heartbreak behind her, and because her grandmother's will stated she and her sister need to run her yarn store together for a year before making any ownership changes.

Sadie is enjoying meeting up with her old friends and spending time in the store - until she finds a body there after hours. Now Sadie and her friends have to find the murderer and clear the name of her grandmother's best friend, which plenty of wacky adventures, friendship and potential love interests taking place along the way.

This was a really fun book, and I especially liked the second mystery being solved at the end and think it will be a great story line for the future books in this new series.

Audiobook: A cozy murder mystery set in a small town. The main female character is smart, patient, observant, and dedicated friend out to prove her friend’s innocence. Some unexpected twists and a fledgling triangle romance make for an interesting and entertaining story. The whole cake scene had me chuckling! Shenanigans of long time friends are entertaining! The narrator did a good job bringing the story to life! I received a free copy of the audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

I would like to thank the two authors who created such an interesting book! Not only is the mystery excellent but the hidden room story line is excellent as well. I like the group of women who hang together who were involved in solving the mystery! There is action, humor and possible romance but that remains to be seen. I look forward to more books in the story line. If possible I would like to see the addition of a pattern in the end of the book as it takes place in a yarn store. I love mysteries but I am also an avid knitter and crocheter, just added interest.

Alpacas and Alibis is a fun cosy mystery with a side of knitting, which is right up my street. Sadie finds a dead body in her yarn shop and turns PI trying to clear her friend’s name.

There’s lots of interesting characters including her disgruntled sister, an old flame who is now the sheriff and her trusty group of friends.

Fast-paced and I really enjoyed this and the murder mystery element left me guessing; and I really appreciated all the knitting bits through the book. There was quite a bit of humour too - watch out for the file and the alpacas!

So the story was entertaining, kept me in and wanting to listen. Knitting needles to the eye? Ouch!!!! The characters were funny - I loved the girlfriend group and the relationship between Clem and Sadie.

I listened to the audible version - so my review includes my thoughts on the person reading the story.

Audible narrator sounded like it was AI generated- flat monotone and breaking for breathe in weird spots. Maybe it was the first book they narrated? The voices made to sound like the characters were done well and made me laugh - but the internal dialogue was just Bad.

Fun friend group

I enjoyed the strong friend group and the “no girl left behind” mentality. I usually love this author’s books but if I wasn’t familiar with the author I probably wouldn’t continue with the series. I just couldn’t suspend belief enough that someone married to a NYC detective would investigate in such an amateurish way. The back and forth with her sister became a bit tedious. And I didn’t like the mixed signals she was giving Reed. Having said that I might give book 2 a try since it’s in KU

I loved my first visit to Hoochville! I really enjoyed this story! Sadie and her friends have such a great time when together and the best of relationships, where it's like they were never separated for a moment. The antics they get up to, and the tricks they play, really makes you feel their dtrong bond and love for one another. The story kept me laughing and wondering "who done it" with quite a few twists and turns, and an ending I never saw coming. I'm can't wait to see what the girls get up to in book 2!

Welll, murder, yarn & sister friends with a sheriff thrown in as well as a country feeling.

Enjoyed this murder mystery with a group of rapscally gal friends, a yarn store, & sibling rivalry. I crochet a lot. This mystery interested me for that reason as well as the whole gal friendship part. Each there for the other for doing what was needed to help. Loved Sadie Mae’s persistence in being there for her grandma’s friend as well as her friends being there for HER as well. Great little free clean read.

The Haves with Country Club and Snobbery only when when of the hicks goes away from town and comes back married to a Have. Well the Have note are generally surprised when she won't address any of her old friends anymore - until she can't as in ends up dead in a yarn goods store.
Well worth the whodunit read. I never did figure out the reveal. Well done.
