Emma White was at an illegal drug club with her date William. She did not know it was illegal, but all the thick hazy smoke hit her in the face when she tripped over someone, made her think that this was no ordinary tobacco smoke. That someone she tripped over was Gavin Phillips and his first impression of her was, she does not belong here. She was so upset that her date would dare bring her to something illegal that she told him she was leaving. As she walked towards the door, the police started entering to raid the club. She sat down on the floor with her head in her hands with despair coming over her in waves. How was she to explain her being in jail to her mom? Gavin seeing her so dejected held out his hand and offered a way out. She took it and escaped the club. A few blocks later Emma thanks Gavin after refusing his offer for a drink, calls a cab and leaves him. Gavin was desolate. No other woman had ever affected him like this and he was so sorry she left. As he was walking around, a cab pulled up and Emma got out. (How did she know where to find him if he had been walking around with no direction) She changed her mind and decided to have that drink as a thank you and took him to a neighborhood student pub. The pub was full of students and music. Gavin finds a table in the corner and the next thing dear readers he was pressing Emma against the wall, pulled down her top and pulled up her skirt and gave her a gigantic orgasm. This is where I pause. I think the author left something out here. They were in a public place, full of students and he practically got her naked, all against a wall with NO ONE noticing. Excuse me, something is definitely off here. After this orgasm they walk out and she leaves him again.
One year later, Emma is leaving to go to Los Angeles. She just received a drama and acting scholarship to a University there. Her sister Sarah is hysterical and does not want Emma to leave her. Sarah is still emotional and despondent over 1) a broken marriage 2) a broken wedding or 3) jilted at the altar, to a billionaire by the name of Adam. Take your pick; all three were attributed to her state of stress. As Sarah takes Emma to the airport the histrionics continue. In my opinion this is way, way beyond normal, maybe the family is a little dysfunctional?
When Emma arrives in LA, her roomie Holly arrives to pick her up and takes her to Holly’s house where she will be renting for the next 2 years. Her boyhood friend, Tristan calls her to take her to dinner and sites see Hollywood. Tristan looks really good and he is doing well as a MMA fighter. Later Holly bullies Emma into going to a hot new club that night. In fact it was so hot, no one can get in without an invitation. Emma, Holly and her boyfriend arrive. Holly and Emma go to the door, but are refused entrance. Emma hears a voice behind her that says, “I can get you in”. As she turns to look at the man that went with the voice, she is speechless to see it is Gavin. Gavin gets them in, attends to his business appointment and whisk Emma out of there and to dinner.
This starts the wooing of Emma by Gavin. He takes her out to wonderfully expensive places, buys her extravagant gifts and Emma keeps telling him not to spend so much of his money on her because he surely cannot afford this lifestyle on a Private Investigators salary. How she knows he is a private investigator I have no idea, I could not find that conversation anywhere in the book. He tells her continuously, that he gets all this for free because his clients owe him. Doesn’t she get a little suspicious of the fact that everything is a freebie from his clients?
The book spins a lovely tale of romance and love until the very end when some shocking truths are discovered and Emma falls to the floor devastated. To be continued. Major cliffhanger.
I will buy the next book because I am a sucker for cliffhangers. I received my ARC for an honest review. In the body of the review, I have stated where some parts just did not flow cohesively or did not make sense. The story is choppy in places and interesting in others. I hope P A Jones edits these parts before final printing.
