The little village of Tiruchengodu in central-western Tamil Nadu serves as the setting for the Tamil novel Maadhorubaagan, or ""One Part Female."" The plot centres on the lives of Kaali and Ponna, a young couple without children, whose prayers, longings, and dreams for a child come together on the hill in Tiruchengode that is home to Ardhanareeswara, the Hindu god Shiva's one-part female form. How Perumal Murugan writes engrosses the reader in the narrative from the first, bringing Ponna's suffering and Kali's fear to life. The story, told in the vernacular of the village people, describes the social exclusion that a childless couple experiences and the lengths to which it drives them.
