Dilly loved a good murder. Not a REAL murder. A made-up murder. One you would find in a murder mystery novel.
Sherlock Holmes was her favourite detective, so much so that she had named her dog Watson after his faithful companion. Dilly had trained her Watson to sniff out clues and follow scent trails. Something he would happily do for a dog biscuit. Or two.
So far, Dilly and Watson hadn’t had much luck cracking cases – beyond lost cats, or missing biscuits that turned out to have been eaten all along. But now the detective duo found themselves on a luxury ocean liner bound for London. A thousand passengers. A thousand nautical miles of ocean around them. It was the perfect place for a murder…

David Walliams is an actor and writer best known for his work with Matt Lucas in the multi-award-winning sketch show Little Britain. His debut children's novel, The Boy in the Dress, was published in 2008 to unanimous critical acclaim and he has since developed a reputation as a natural successor to Roald Dahl.
‘Dilly loves a good murder. Not a REAL murder. A made-up murder. One you would find in a murder mystery novel. Sherlock Holmes is her favourite detective. She even named her dog Watson after his faithful companion and trained him to sniff out clues and follow trails. But now the detective duo find themselves on a luxury ocean liner bound for London. A thousand passengers. A thousand miles of ocean around them. It’s the perfect place for a murder… Or two. Or three. Or four. Or MORE!’ I loved this book. I am a massive fan of David Walliams’ books so I was excited to get my hands on this book. Since I have read all of this book; and absolutely loved most of them, I went into this book with very high hopes. Thankfully, this book not only lived up to my high expectations, it well and truly surpassed them. One of the things I loved most about this book was that it was full of mystery and twists and turns to keep readers on the edge of their seats. I loved that the mystery didn’t take away from David Walliams’s wit and humour which is what I pick up a David Walliams book for. Another great element of this book was the fantastic illustrations by Adam Stower. These illustrations were funny and informative including maps, lists, and character information, which added an extra layer to this wonderful book. David Walliams has done a fabulous job with this book. It was fun and entertaining as well as moving and suspenseful. I loved every second of my reading experience with this book and since I am not the target audience for it I can only imagine how much young readers will adore this book. Super Sleuth by David Walliams is a must-have for all Middle-Grade readers.
I HAVE MILLIONS OF DAVID WALLIAMS BOOKS... AND I MEAN MILLIONS!! BUT WHEN HE WRITES A FLIPPIN MURDER MYSTERY! I'M JUST LOST FOR WORDS... SO GOOD THE MURDERS WERE FUNNY, THE FINDING OUT WHO THE MURDERER IS WAS EPIC! SO JUST A VERY BIG WELL DONE DAVID WELL DONE ADAM
I absolutely loved this book. It's a fun, quick and gripping read
I found myself very lost within the book. The story is extremely gripping with all it's quck going ons. There's always something happening. Small clues being dropped, bread crumbing the reader to the awnser. It's brilliantly done.
100% amazing. Lots of laugh out loud moments with lots of murder and plot twists. I would definetly recommend. I always loved asking myself "can I solve the murder before the detective?" whilst reading the book.
Oh how I enjoyed this book! I love love loveeeeed Watson. He reminded me of my little one Pluto. I enjoyed this book so much and even though it didn’t have Raj - my favourite walliams’ character , the book was still amazing! As always David Walliams did not disappoint one bit!
This was a funny, ridiculous (in a good way), not obvious (despite being for children) murder mystery. I loved our crime solving duo of Dilly and her dog Watson and the setting of a 1920's cruiseliner 'The Masquerade'. We get these fun diagrams depicting our entire cast of characters which was a fun addition. I had thought they could have been used as reference to figure out who the murder was (research a clue left behind for example), alas this was not the case. One other minor nitpick I had was Dilly's evil aunt. I just feel the evil parent/guardian trope is so over done (especially when it comes to David Walliams work). That aside however this was a wonderful time and I can't imagine any child not loving this after reading it.
💙🐶 BOOK REVIEW:- I loved this book so much. It is so cute and an absolute edge of the seat mystery for children (and well, me too🤭) I couldn't guess the perpetrator till the very end and then when it was revealed, another twist came along and I was like 😯😦😧😲😳🤯. Yes, that is exactly how I was, and you'll be too! Go pick a copy right now!!!

Super Sleuth is a cute, silly, easy to follow, short story with Dilly as our star detective and her dog Watson. I did not realize what I was buying when I purchased this book in the Bacelona International Airport. I just had promised myself to buy a new book to read on the airplane on my flight to London. There was not a huge selection of books written in English, yet, with this choice I was pleasantly suprised. The intended audience for this story is elementary and middle school kids. Ha-ha, I did feel like a kid again while reading it! The story flowed like a comic book, only with fewer sketches. And you know what? I did not figure out who the bad guy was before it was revealed within the pages of the story through Dilly's eyes. Bravo to David Walliams for a well written murder mystery.
🔎 I never intended to start and finish this book in one evening, but here we are! I couldn't put it down! 🔎 This is the first book by David Walliams i have read, and what a fun book it was! I am definitely older than the demographic it is aimed for, but it was such a fun read, I sailed(no boat pun intended) through it! 🔎 I loved the illustrations all the way through, the characters, the plot, it was fun! I did, however, work out whodunit, but i hadn't worked it all out, so that's always a treat! 🔎 If you want a gripping murder mystery, this is not the book for you, but a fun, light hearted murder with memorable characters, a d the hopes on more books in the series, then yes. 🔎
Super Sleuth is an amazing book. I love the mystery and it gives you a sense of not knowing what’s going to happen and that’s hard to achieve,oh and when Dilly finds that fox is not fox’s real name its wolf! Also to top that off he’s the murderer when I was at the middle of the book I thought Auntie Gladlys was the murderer which she was well one of them.I also love that when Dilly explains that Wolf is the murderer it’s shown like in her book of clues because if you look at the sides you can see lines. So I’m basically saying that I love the book and everything about it,I can’t wait to read more!🤩
David Walliams is a popular author among students in our school. He is not my favourite but he also didn't write his books for an adult like me! I can see how kids like these outrageous fast past books full of laugh out loud moments (for kids not an adult like me;). Somethings are a little questionable like drinking champagne and getting drunk (some adults in the book) but again kids read this differently and it's clearly portrayed as a bad choice and in this case one that will get you killed. I can understand the kid appeal and im sure this one will be another hit among his kid readers (or maybe some adults too.)
I really enjoyed this book it helped me get out of my reading slump. I liked how the characters were written and how well they all worked together. This was such a good book I liked the settings of the book and how it was all solved on a ship. David knows how to right good children’s books. The main character Dillies is such a smart young girl to solve the mystery on her own with her side kick the dog Sherlock. I really wish they would be a second book to this one as it would make such a good series. Xxx
Super Sleuth by David Walliams is an entertaining and lively mystery, with plenty of laugh-out-loud moments and clever twists.
I really enjoyed the power duo of Dilly and Watson — their teamwork and relationship make for a fun read. David Walliams’ dynamic writing style keeps the pace moving and makes it easy to get into, whether reading alone or aloud.
It’s full of suspense and silly humour in equal measure, which makes it a great choice for young readers who enjoy a good mystery without it ever getting too serious. A solid, enjoyable story that’s sure to make kids smile.
Such a great hit by David Walliams. I mean I don’t normally read his books, but when I saw this in the bookshop I just couldn’t resist.
Dilly is a young girl around 9ish and she loves murder mystery’s. She also loves reading books and combines them obvs. She goes on a cruise with her aunt and soon to be Uncle and what she doesn’t know is that murder is lurking just around the corner, with not as many as you think.
It is a crazy and hilarious read with lovely illustrations!
I like the nods to mystery novels throughout. The character of Dilly is heartwarming and engaging. The plot twist was also well executed and although I partially suspected the person, I did not suspect how they did it. The 1920's time period was also executed well. You can tell he did a lot of research on the time period. The murders are also very creative! I rather enjoyed the comedic writing style of David Walliams. I thought it fit the book well.
A wild, somewhat silly and also a bit dark, murder mystery for kids. I enjoyed reading this book with my son, and neither of us saw the final twist coming. I think fans of murder mysteries will enjoy this even more, as I suspect there are references to that genre we missed (the books mentioned within made us laugh). The 1920s setting also gave us lots to talk about, along with the central mystery itself.
David Walliams was my favourite author when I was in Grade 6 and 7. The fact that I got to meet him on his book tour was amazing. His recent book super sleuth was a murder mystery and since I loved murder mystery books I decided to give it a shot. It is a very lighthearted book meant for ages 10 to 12 But overall a fun read and would recommend it to any David Walliams fan or if your looking to read a lighthearted murder/detective book sort of like the kiddish version of Sherlock Holmes
Dily and her dog, Watson, are sailing on a cruise with her Aunt. There are a number of murders aboard the cruise, except for the ships chef, the victims are super sleuths trying to solve the murders but each one becomes the victim. Dily and Watson are on the case to solve the mystery but Dily becomes the prime suspect. Read the book to find out who the murder(s) was.
Another excellent story from David Walliams. Great characters in the story and a fast paced plot. When I thought his books were maybe getting a bit tired, this comes along and really entertains. I may be nearly 50 but this book makes me feel like a kid again. Would have loved to have read this when I was a child. Highly recommend this to anyone who wants a fun murder mystery story.
The story is set in the 1920’s and centres around Dilly who loves Sherlock Holmes, so much so she has a dog called Watson who has been trained to sniff out clues! When the pair end up on a ship set for London, they finally get the chance to solve their first whodunnit.
It’s super exciting, full of mystery and intrigue, twists and turns.
Soooo good it was a bit hard to hook on to at the start but it wasn’t that much of a struggle like most murder mysteries the huge twist at the end just made me upset for not making this a whole book series… if David Williams could see this i would ask him to make a series for this book, it deserves it.
its been ages since i’ve last read a david walliams book but yippee! reading this made me so happy :) i loooove the illustrations and different fonts and eccentric characters in these books <3 the endings are all so wholesome too! i really should reread his older books to feel more whimsical again :)
To be honest I like his more out of the box books like gangsta granny or boy In the dress because everyone nowadays is doing murder mysteries and why did he change the artist and the event was funny when he came to Australia
His most mature and more grown up written book for years. Has he finally realised the kids from 08 are adults now and don't wanna hear about 'bottom burps' repeatedly?
Highly recommended. I hope next we get another World's Worst book, preferably Pets 2
An intresting classic murder blended with a mix of cheekiness and fun from the multi-million bestselling author David walliams. It really scratched my brain on who could of done it, also expanding my knowledge on the early 1900's. I loved it!
