Tutto ha inizio quando Blueberry, mentre sta pattugliando il confine di una riserva indiana, è testimone del violento omicidio di due donne appartenenti a una tribù Apache. A commettere queso omicidio sono tre giovani bianchi. Le due vittime sono la moglie e la figlia del guerriero Rancore (traduzione un po' libera ma molto azzeccata dell'originale "Amertume"). Il duplice assassinio rischia, ovviamente, di accendere il naturale desiderio di vendetta degli Apache e una possibile nuova guerra nella regione tra bianchi e indiani.

Joann Sfar (born August 28, 1971 in Nice) is a French comics artist, comic book creator, and film director.

Sfar is considered one of the most important artists of the new wave of Franco-Belgian comics. Many of his comics were published by L'Association which was founded in 1990 by Jean-Christophe Menu and six other artists. He also worked together with many of the new movement's main artists, e.g. David B. and Lewis Trondheim. The Donjon series which he created with Trondheim has a cult following in many countries.

Some of his comics are inspired by his Jewish heritage as the son of Jewish parents (an Ashkenazi mother and a Sephardic father). He himself says that there is Ashkenazi humor in his Professeur Bell series (loosely based on Joseph Bell), whereas Le chat du rabbin is clearly inspired by his Sephardic side. Les olives noires is a series about a Jewish child in Israel at the time of Jesus. Like Le chat du rabbin, the series contains a lot of historical and theological information.

His main influences are Fred and André Franquin as well as Marc Chagall, Chaim Soutine, Will Eisner, Hugo Pratt and John Buscema.

From 2009 to 2010, Sfar wrote and directed 'Serge Gainsbourgh: Une Vie Heroique', a biopic of the notorious French songwriter, of whom Sfar is a self-confessed fanatic. The film, which draws substantially on Sfar's abilities as a comic book artist through its extensive use of fantasy artwork, animation and puppetry, was released in 2010 to general critical acclaim.

Sfar y Blain se atreven a meterse en los zapatos de Charlier y Giraud en una aventura de tono clásico pero sin renunciar a su estilo.

Personalmente pienso que es un acierto no limitarse a imitar los álbumes clásicos y apostar por algo un poco diferente. Puede que el cambio en el estilo decepcione a los que buscan total fidelidad al original, pero creo que eso hubiera sido imposible alcanzarlo con una mera imitación (Y tampoco olvidemos que la serie mutó enormemente en los años que pasaron entre Fort Navajo y Dust) Pese a lo elevado del listón creo que superan bien el reto y me quedo con ganas de leer los próximo tomos.

Un excellent Blueberry, dans la lignée des scénarios imaginés par Charlier: héros complexes, scénario politique autour des apaches, avec en plus un goût d’air du temps (le viol, la place de la femme). Les dessins ne sont pas ceux de Giraud, mais de Blain, ultra à l’aise, notamment dans le découpage (probablement travaillé avec Sfar) et avec des chevaux très vivants et une action et une ambiance de western crépusculaire. Vite, la suite!

Blueberry: Amargura Apache (Uma Aventura do Tenente Blueberry, #1), é uma releitura do seminal personagem de Jean-Michel Chartier e Jean Giraud, mundiamente conhecido como Moebius. É algo bem no estilo das Graphic MSP, em que personagens clássicos de um criador são revisitados por grnades nomes e destaques da nova geração. Neste volume os responsáveis são Joan Sfarr, do hilário e desconcertante O Gato do Rabino,q ue faz os roteiros e Christophe Blain, do interessantíssimo Christophe, o Pirata. O resultado, eu imaginei que poderia ser sensacional, mas confesso que me decepcionei um pouco. Por muitas vezes as cenas são de difícil entendimento, as lutas, os duelos, as cavalgadas. É provável que isso tenha sido provocado por minha pouca familiaridade com o estilo de narrattiva de quadrinhos franco-belga, que contém muitíssimos quadros por página e muitas fezes o texto fica acavalado e dá a sensação de verborragia e apressão. Mas isso é uma impressão minha, claro. Os desenhos de Blain, dessa vez coloridos, são fascinantes, seu Blueberry é muito mais charmos que o original (perdão, Moebius). Já Sfarr trabalha alguns elementos de gênero cuja preocupação certamente não existia na époica do Velho Oeste, estã ali por causa do público contemporâneo. Enfim, este quadrinho é um belo esforço para trazer Blueberry para as novas gerações, mas a mim não agradou o quanto eu esperava.

Le genre western sert souvent à mettre en evidence les changements de la culture occidentale. Dans cette aventure, on peut voir comme le rôle traditionnel de la femme commence à être refusé, et comme les hommes doivent apprendre à l'accepter. Les dessins sont magnifiques, et utilisent les onomatopées et la composition de la table avec beaucoup de créativité. La seul chose que je n'ai apprecié particulièrement est la présence de trop de cartouches: dans certains cas, je pense que ces comments du narrateur sont futiles.

Dois dos maiores quadrinistas franceses da atualidade, Joan Sfar e Cristophe Blain, se uniram para reviver o Tenente Blueberry, antigo personagem desenhado por Moebius e cultuado pelos franceses. Para quem acompanhou na época, duvido que este álbum irá decepcionar, pois a história aqui contada é fiel a todos os clichês do Western assim como às suas qualidades, incluindo humor, heroísmo, brutalidade e sensualidade.

Pra mim foi uma supresa ver a versatilidade dos dois franceses, tanto de Blain, que normalmente tem um estilo mais caricatural e de Sfar, que deixa de lado sua veia "caótica" para contar uma história mais linear, com heróis, vilões e romances.

A surprisingly good album, Star and Blain gets Blueberry without copying Charlier and Giraud's original series. The landscape and environment are recognisable, as is the main theme (emerging conflict between natives and whites due to certain dubious persons). At the same time there are some story elements that we have not seen in the series before, especially according to women, but it works well. This is a worthy successor to the main series.

Even though Christophe Blain's drawings are very different from master Jean Giraud's, if you you look at the pages from afar, it looks quite true to the original. Drawn as if Giraud would have has a lazy day or been in a hurry ;-). And the story is also a traditional Blueberry-story. I enjoyed reading it!

Förutom att Blueberry och Jimmy MacClure är med så har inte den här berättelsen mycket gemensamt med klassiska Blueberry.

Detta verk har fel ton. Rå, emellanåt på gränsen till vulgär. Teckningarna är okej, men inte alls i samma klass som tidigare verk.
