Short novel set in a world where dragons are real.

This felt like a short book adapted from something longer, though the format works just fine for the story - it did feel like it could have been expanded.

Yara visits her sister in hospital as often as she can, her sister is ill, quite badly so, affecting her parents' attention, the need to move, and now Yara'a behaviour at home and school.

This sister sees the slim chance to help things in an unexpected way, when she happens across the last dragon alive in the world at the moment it lays an egg. This could be the final dragon the world ever sees... and Yara has heard stories that it has healing powers if touched. But the authorities are after the previous object too. Even though no dragon egg has resulted in a birth for hundreds of years.

Racing to protect both the egg and her sister's life, Yara must trust in new friends to look after those she loves and even help the whole world.

A lot to cover in the short page length? Yes, but the author does fit it in. There's a rushed ending of sorts though, with some details glanced over that I wanted more of.

It's a good look into the world of long-term childhood sickness and the effects it has on other family members.

It's a good start to books on this world of dragons, the history/background is touched on and I definitely wanted to know more. Will there be further books based on this world, Ms Ho-Yen...?

For fairly young readers due to its length, though the subject matter may be a little upsetting for some. For ages 8 and above.

A middle grade fantasy about friendship, sisterhood, the environment and dragons.
Yara is acting out at school because she has to be perfect at home, her sister is poorly in hospital and her parents can't give her the attention she requires.
There is a magical dragon floating around and it lays an egg near Yara and she has to battle against the dragon police to look after this egg and keep it safe, so she can try to get it to her sister to make her better.
Yara isn't always the most likeable, but she is dealing with a lot and underneath just wants to make her sister better. She makes friends with Bertie and working together they are stronger.

This has been sitting on my shelf for ages.

It is an ideal step into novels for those wanting to read something a bit longer. It's got a few beautiful illustrations throughout which break up at the text and add a bit of visualisation to the story.

The story is set in modern times, but there is one single dragon still alive. The main character Yara has had to move to a new school as her sister needs treatment. As you can see from the cover she discovers an egg, what it is exactly and how she gets it, you need to read to discover.

Properly the 2nd dragon kids book I really enjoyed and couldn't put down.
The plot about the dragons and what happened to them was good.
The character choices were amazing too.
Really did like the ending but am hoping there will be a sequel.

Can't wait to read the other works from this author.

The start of this was great and held so much promise. As it went on however I just found it dragged on. I also wasn’t 100% happy with how the ending went.
