Wow! Just Wow... A brilliant and fitting end to an outstanding series

Todd Fahnestock has outdone himself with this final installment of Eldros Legacy: Legacy of Shadows. Well written, gripping, and still bringing in new concepts to the end, this is probably the crowning achievement of his career so far.

Don't you hate it when books, films, and TV just end like falling off a cliff? What about when they spend most of the final episode covering pointless non-information? No problem with either here - the action is there to the end, yet Todd leaves you in no doubt what happened in every part of Noksonon and where every character stands at the finish. He even neatly adds in a few clues that could be the basis of new stories if he ever changes his mind, but without adversely affecting the book or the series. Masterful stuff.

So, do you need to read the other books in the series first? It would certainly be a better option, as it gives you the background on the characters and how they got where they are, but if you are good at suspending disbelief then it could be read stand-alone.

Finally, how many stars is it worth? I have given it five stars because that is the most available to me, but frankly that is not really enough. It almost makes me regret having given Todds other work five stars because now I have nowhere else to go! Suffice it to say that if I could have given it six stars I would have done.

This book is the conclusion of Fahnestock's Legacy of Shadows series in the Eldros shared universe. I've enjoyed the previous installments in this series quite a bit, and I was eager to dive back into Fahnestock's well-imagined world.

Slater remains my favorite character and, if anything, becomes more interesting and pivotal to the plot. My second favorite character, Khyven, finally faces a challenge he can't surpass with his skill alone. Luckily, he isn't alone. Every character that makes up this found family has a vital role to play. Without any one of them, our underdog heroes would surely fail.

There are a number of fun twists, plenty of action, and some tender moments as our heroes struggle, fail, and grow to their full potential. The climax was satisfying, but the resolution felt a bit drawn out...perhaps because Fahnestock needed to wrap up the whole series and not just a single story. I was pleased that Nevalos did not slip away unscathed, though for such an initially pivotal character, he felt like a bit of an afterthought by the end.

All in all, this was a satisfying conclusion to a wonderfully creative epic fantasy series.
