Watkins Glen Gladiators #2

In Difesa! (Watkins Glen Gladiators n.2)

Rate this book

In difesa!

This was a super sweet, no drama, sports romance which was a breeze to read and just a whole load of fun.

Although at times there were moments which felt a bit PSA about how people should behave and treat others, it never reached preachy levels and the bullying secondary story featuring Criswell's younger brother Benji was handled well.

Speaking of Criswell, this series has had me chuckling to myself so far with some of the names of the protagonists, although it makes a change from Tom, Dick or Aaron 😁

Carson, captain of the Gladiators, is a super sweet guy, although I have to say he didn't read like he was a 30-year-old, but I guess he'd had a fairly normal upbringing, lived in his own home and had a decent job, so maybe that was why.

Criswell felt more like his age, he's a bit younger but has had the responsibility for his brother since their father died in a drunken car accident not long after he'd turned 18. Life's been a struggle but he doesn't let it get him down. His sunny exterior matches his personality perfectly.

Theirs is an instant attraction with a very funny meet/cute but the relationship takes time to develop through casual dating and then into love.

All in all this really was just a smashing low angst, medium steamy romance which I thoroughly enjoyed. I'm looking forward to the next one in the series too, featuring the new gay pastor and one of Carson's ice hockey colleagues.

I feel bad leaving a one star review but it was so badly written that I couldn’t give it more. The interactions between both MCs were so freaking cringey and the whole thing read like bad fanfiction. Not sure I’ll try something else from that author if that’s standard for them.

This book was beyond cute. Criswell and Carson made such a cute couple. For a book that has toxic masculinity and bullying as subtle themes, it was really sweet and comfortable to read overall. This book was the warm and fuzzies all around. I really appreciate it, sometimes you just need to see two people love each other and be happy to get through.

This was a super sweet and fun read, very satisfying. Something from this author is guaranteed you got a good solid story.

Carson is the captain of an ice hockey team, a mountain of a man, he’s queer, kind, and somewhat lonely. He lives with his grandpa and his dog. Meeting Criswell at the Seneca Starlight’s Wine and Hockey Fundraiser, changed his life.

Criswell is raising his younger brother, and is the waiter at the event, he runs into Carson with a bowl of Union soup. Carson is quite smitten with the tiny ginger, it’s mutual.

Benji, Criswell’s teenage brother, is a gender-fluid kid, who’s quite creative with their wardrobe. There are punks at school who can’t handle his awesomeness.
Watch Carson being protective over Benji. Watch his grandpa being open-minded and supportive of Benji.
While it’s a story with a lot of fun, a sweet romance, and a lovely family, some moments made my eyes wet, it was such a wonderful read. I adored them all.

I REALLY wanted to like this since it seemed to be right up my alley ( aside from the sports part) buuttttt unfortunately this didn’t feel like a polished story … it felt more like someone with ADHD just writing out their stream of thoughts. 🙈

And that type of writing can be fun and quirky when it’s done sparingly but the whole story being like this is exhausting 🙈

VL Locey is really good at creating unique character voices, and I loved that this was a sports book where the athlete character is in the minor leagues and can’t solve all his problems with money. I’m glad Locey has stayed committed to telling minor league stories because they feel quite different from most sports romances. Locey also did a good job delivering on the “low angst” promise in the blurb. There was maybe not enough conflict here for me, but that didn’t affect my rating because this was intentionally written to be low angst.

Although I liked the characters, I just couldn’t buy them as a professional athlete and a man in his 20s. They read like people in their 40s (my own age group, so no insult intended here) with the interests, cultural references, and vocabulary that just don’t fit either character’s bio. (The hockey player uses the word “surcease” in his inner monologue, and while I’m certainly not saying that no hockey player could know that word, it really doesn’t fit with everything else we’re told about his character.) The book also gave me “the author changed the character’s physical appearance to match the cover image after writing most of the book” vibes, because the hockey player MC has a Madison piercing for some inexplicable reason (I highly doubt this would be safe for someone playing a contact sport), but it’s only mentioned at random times, and has a beard that’s mentioned maybe once? I really wish authors wouldn’t do this. It doesn’t matter if your character matches the cover photo. Everyone is used to playing the “wait, which character is this???” game with romance covers.

I received an ARC in exchange for my review.

I absolutely love how this author tells a story!
Throughout this book I have chuckled, been charmed, been very angry and was in awe of the characters. I fell in love with them and rooted for them.
Criswell and Carson could not be better suited for each other. Their attraction for each other, ease in which they go about their relationship and their acceptance from friends, family and coworkers is wonderful to see.
Like I said at the beginning of this review, I chuckled quite often at the descriptions of people and situations happening by Criswell and Carson, and while reading the conversations they had with themselves!
Their sense of humor, teasing and love for each other made me smile a lot while reading their love story. Their romantic scenes were also very well done and very enjoyable.
Shout out to all the Benji's out there. Always be yourself. Always be proud. You are amazing!
I highly recommend this book.
I very much look forward to the next book in the series!

I'm so happy we got Criswell's book. He stood out from book one and is such an adorable character. Carson is such a wholesome good natured good guy who deserves all the love, they both do. The addition of Benji's story and existence cements the love they all share and the good they will do for the diverse gender fluid community. There are many lessons to be learned.
I really enjoyed this book.

Riletti i precedenti volumi!! 🤩

This is a sweet, low angst hockey romance featuring the captain of a minor league hockey team and a fabulous out and proud waiter with a gender fluid younger brother he is raising. The path of the romance is sweet and smooth, and the only angst comes from a bullying storyline for the high school age younger brother.

I enjoyed Carson and Criswell and the way that not only the MCs but the other queer members of the hockey team had no qualms about being open and clear about their sexuality. Can’t wait for the day that is more of a reality in professional sports. The storyline about Benji, Criswell’s younger brother, is an important one. It was so frustrating to read how unhelpful the school was. Sadly, that storyline is a reflection of the current state of things in too many places.

The hockey action was fun to read as well as the descriptions of the team dynamics. At points the writing was a bit stilted or awkward. Not quite sure why as I’ve read quite a few of this author’s books and don’t recall feeling that way. Not a major issue but definitely noticeable.

This series is a sweet, quick read series. We can already see the foreshadowing of three future couples. I’ll look forward to reading their stories.

**I voluntarily read an ARC and this is my unbiased opinion.**

A charming story in the Hockey series ! We have opposites, low angst, and humor in Watkins Glen, NY, home of the AHL Gladiators Hockey team.
Carson, 30, Team Captain, tall, dark hair,

hazel eyes, a trim beard, and hunky with piercings and tatts. Carson watches over his grumpy grandfather and has a Peke-a-Poo, Penelope.

Criswell, 20s, is a freckled ginger with

bright eyes, 5'3", 110 lbs., is raising his gender fluid brother, Benji, after their folks died. He's a waiter on the riverboat dinner cruises.

Carson and some of the team members go on a

charity dinner cruise. Criswell is the waiter that collides with Carson, which leads to their budding relationship. Later they make a date, talk and get to know about each other.

When these guys can find time, they go on a few more dates, and then fine they are super compatible in sexy times, too. Criswell isn't shy in the bedroom and they are vers.

Criswell's brother is being bullied in school, and he stands up to that. Carson deals with grandfather's fights with the neighbors, but the elder man gets along with Criswell and Benji just fine.

Carson trains hard and plays harder.

He and Criswell have fun together and all of the characters are dynamic and lively. This story isn't very believable, but it is hugely entertaining, with lots of humor and banter.

The men are deeply thought-filled, and caring to everyone. Carson witnesses Benji being bullied and intervenes.

This is a wonderful tale of opposites attract and how their romance blooms.

It's heartwarming and happy.
ENJOY !

Sweet, gentle low angst romance

Rating: 4🌈

V.L. Locey’s low angst, contemporary hockey romance series, Watkins Glen Gladiators, continues with Defending the House. It’s a very sweet story, comprised of 30 something Carson Dries, Captain of the Gladiators, a caretaker for his grandfather and owner of a peke a poo , and a younger Criswell Dobbs, waiter and guardian of his high school genderqueer brother .

I’m trying to find a way to describe exactly how low key this story is. Because if you are going to expect a romance with some real obstacles or barriers that appear, or major problems or issues that arise that the main characters have to overcome, this isn’t that story.

Some tales are like small rivers or streams. They have eddies, pools of varying depths, currents that rush over small areas, falling rapidly, only to find a pool and calm itself before moving smartly on .

But Defending the House is more like a canal. One without locks. It’s a smooth, gentle, relaxed ride from start to finish. No obstacles, nothing to get concerned about. A fun, quick, enjoyable experience.

Carson Dries “meets cute” Criswell Dobbs over a spilled bowl of onion soup. A romantic relationship quickly ensues. Criswell has a teenage genderqueer sibling, who’s getting bullied in school. Carson has a grumpy grandfather and a quirky adorable dog.

Locey, who writes both hockey and families so well, has crafted two here in need of each other. And gently, without any drama, lets them be together.

My only quibble is that the story just sort of ends. Spoiler alert. They agreed to move in together and meld families.

And that’s it. No epilogue. No scenes afterwards.

So for me it feels a bit unfinished. A shame because I like the characters. I just needed something more. Maybe a chapter to see how the families were doing together.

But this is sweet, and romantic.

If you’re a fan of the author and the series, grab it up .

Carson and Criswell are an unlikely, but perfectly matched couple. Carson is the Gladiators captain. He’s friendly, talented, seasoned and incredibly handsome. Criswell is a waiter on the Seneca Starlight paddleboat. He’s twinkish, funny, hardworking and loyal.

Carson is attending a casino night gala of sorts on the Starlight. He was running late because of parking and is a little more flustered than usual. When he turns around from the bar too quickly and runs into the waiter, he finds himself wearing a whole lot of French onion soup with his previously immaculate tux.

Criswell has already dropped a salad into someone’s lap. Now he’s covered a humongous hockey player – in a tux, no less – in boiling hot soup. His life flashes before his eyes, sure that he’s about to meet his maker. He isn’t expecting the giant man to take the blame, find him at the end of the evening to inquire about when he would next be working and then return the following night with his grandfather to enjoy a meal in Criswell’s section. He really isn’t expecting to have the hockey captain ask him out!

Carson and Criswell embark on a beautiful journey of love, self-discovery and family. Carson and his family fully accept Criswell’s brother’s gender fluidity and go out of their way to make both brothers feel welcome and part of the family. The two men, while different in looks, jobs and families, are very obviously made for one another and their low-angst love story was a treat to read.

I received a complimentary copy of this book and, as always, my review is honest and unpaid.

Sweet, steamy and entertaining small-town M/M romance
This was a really funny book (“toot sweet”). You’ll understand when you read that line, but there are lots of them throughout this book. Cleverly written, well-edited, a little preachy but outstanding story of two unlikely guys finding each other. First, we have big, buff, ice hockey player, Carson Dries (rhymes with trees) and then, twinky, femme Criswell Dobbs who has a gender fluid brother Benji. Lots to unravel in this book and lots of passion about the instance of gender identity.
Carson has just turned 30yo and wants something more lasting in a relationship. After having onion soup dumped all over him by the cutest, sweetest twink he has ever seen, Carson gets tongue-tied in front of 22yo Criswell the server. Thus begins their adventure to romance. Carson has a crotchety old grandfather and Criswell has Benji to contend with. Will their romance go smoothly in the small town of Watkins Glen?
It was refreshing that the jock wasn’t afraid to be himself and not hide his being gay. Also, the author has a nice mix of gay and straight guys on the hockey team. There are other gay guys on the team and I think we’ll get their stories in time. I know the next one is about DJ and Gabe the new assistant pastor at the local church and openly bisexual. If you like low angst and sweet M/M romance, you will want to read this book and series. I volunteered to review an ARC of this book through Gay Romance Reviews. The cover model is the perfect Carson!

If you enjoy sports romance and are looking for a light, easy read, definitely check out Defending the House. The 2nd installment in V.L. Locey’s Watkins Glen Gladiators series delivers a low angst, opposites attract romance between a brawny team captain and a clumsy waiter. Their meet cute is unfortunate yet adorable, and I love how there’s a spark from that first moment they connect.

I really like that this series follows a minor league team. There’s mention of the Calder Cup & pro call-ups, so I’m assuming the Gladiators are in the AHL. The dynamic at that level is different than what we see in the pros, and for once, it’s nice to see guys who aren’t flush with cash and are still working hard to get noticed. I also enjoy seeing how small towns rally around their teams and treat the players like local royalty.

The romance between Carson & Criswell is really sweet and satisfying. Each has his own commitments and challenges which create adversity and tug them in different directions, so it’s nice to see them come together in a way that’s supportive and lacks a lot of drama. Their conflict isn’t tied to their relationship, something I absolutely love when it happens in romance, because it means their issues bring them together rather than tear them apart. In this case, they mostly revolve around homophobia & bullying, both of which unite them in a way that ultimately makes them stronger.

Another great book in this series!

I hadn’t even finished the first chapter of this book when I was laughing and smiling at V.L. Locey’s trademark wit and humor. While this story has some very serious undertones (bullying of a high schooler) it is filled with light-hearted moments.

Criswell has been caring for his younger brother since their father died when he had just graduated from high school. It’s been difficult but he wouldn’t have it any other way. Benji is gender-fluid and is the victim of bullying at his school.

Carson is done with hook-ups; he wants a partner to share his life. He feels an instant attraction to the cute twink who dump French onion soup all over his tux. They hit it off and begin dating.

I loved the family vibes in this book. Criswell and Benji are alone but Carson and his family accept them fully and welcome them as part of their family. Carson really cares for Criswell and he is happy to have Benji as his new little brother.

This was a really great story with almost no angst at all, lots of fun and humor, and I really enjoyed reading it. I’m looking forward to reading the next book, Dump and Chase.

An advanced copy of this book was provided to me at my request; my review was voluntary and not influenced by the author.

I loved this opposites attract, low angst, romance between a hockey captain and a waiter. Carson and Criswell are both likeable characters and the story has a strong focus on family and the team as family. I enjoyed their story of their first meeting through to their HEA.

I love the idea of a paddleboat restaurant travelling around the lake as meals are served. It says a lot for Criswell that he works so hard to provide for Benji. I like his friends on the boat, although the purser needs a good taking down. Criswell and Carson’s first meeting is fun. I liked how Carson immediately took responsibility and their instant mutual attraction. Their dates, and getting to know each other, are sweet.

The supporting cast are wonderful. I particularly loved Benji, his friend Bethany, and Carson’s grandfather. I also liked Carson’s teammates especially Greco, who is a hoot. I’m looking forward to their stories. I love how they all rally round for Benji when he’s bullied at school. I loved the growing friendship between Benji and Carson’s granddad. I liked Carson’s parents too, and how they immediately include Criswell and Benji as part of their family. I loved the link into the author’s other series.

Defending the House is a really sweet, low angst romance between hockey player, Carson, and waiter, Criswell. There's instant attraction between the two men and it's so lovely that there's no drama between the two. That comes for Criswell's teenage brother, Benji, who he is guardian for. He is gender-fluid and experiencing bullying at school which we read a little of as well as the struggle with getting support from the school.
Criswell has a few worries and pressure to keep a roof over their heads but Carson brings a lot of happiness to his life from when he bumps into the larger man and spills soup all over his suit. Carson is taken with the younger man immediately and is adorable in wanting to get his attention. They are equally sweet and hot together, once they pass the third date of course. Along with Benji, Carson's Grandpa is a great addition to the cast. Both bring a lot of heart and fun to the story. There's also a great hockey team that treat everyone like family. I definitely need to go back and read the first book of the series and look forward to more from V.L. Locey.

They are both at the charitable fundraiser aboard the boat. Carson is the team captain and a hockey player who is all dressed up in his tux and ready to do his part for charity. Criswell is a server who needs the job and is horrified when he runs into Carson and douses him in soup - French onion soup. And then Criswell is shocked when Carson does not pitch a fit but actually covers for his mistake and flirts. These are both men with hearts of gold and both are caretakers. Carson is trying his best to keep his grandpa, who is his next door neighbor, out of trouble while he takes care of him as best he can. Criswell has his teenage brother to care for and raise after his father died and mom disappeared. They are the makings of a loving blended family and a lovely romance in a small town between two very different men who are looking for love and commitment. And they have a lovely cast of friends, family and teammates to help them along the way. 4.5 stars for a lovely story of acceptance and community that kept me smiling.

This is the second book in the Watkins Glen Gladiators series but it can be enjoyed as a standalone. This is the story of Carson Dries and Criswell Dobbs. Carson is the Captain of the Gladiators hockey team. He has just turned 30 and is looking to leave the dating scene behind. He wants a relationship. He also wants his grandfather (whom he is keeping an eye on) to stop fighting with the ladies next door. Criswell is a waiter on a dinner cruise boat on the Seneca Lake. He is a young 20 year old who stepped up when his father died and became a guardian of his younger brother Benji. It is always the two of them against the world. That becomes a little more difficult when bullying happens at Benji's school because he is gender-fluid. Meeting someone when you spill pipping hot onion soup all over them sets the tone for this book. It is fun and sweet. Next to no angst to be found. I really enjoyed this story. It is like putting on a warm and cozy sweater. You feel good reading it. The book is well written and easy to read. I look forward to the next book in this series.

This story is book 2 in the series and again has really believable characters that have great personalities. Carsen is the cool and calm captain who meets Criswell during a charity dinner after an unfortunate incident. Criswell is an amazing person, he works hard to keep himself and his brother housed and fed. He deserves to find Carsen and actually find time for himself. This story revolves around Criswell and Carsen getting to know one another, it is a slow burn but the two of them have such a connection you can feel how they feel about one another. The two of them are vers despite Criswell being a lot smaller, so those looking for smaller tops may like this story. There is of course hockey running alongside the story and also Criswell's brother, who deals with a lot of bullying issues at school. These two are just so sweet together, Carsen is such a gentle person, off the ice, and it was lovely to watch them fall in love. This is such a great book, I really enjoyed it!
There are plenty of funny, sweet, steamy, and heartwarming moments for Criswell and Carson, our MC's who are absolutely perfect for each other.
There is also some mid level angst as Criswell's brother Benji has bullying issues that the high school only gives lip service to addressing until it reaches a point they must intervene.
Criswell has struggled to provide for himself and his brother, but he manages and does it all while maintaining his bright, sunny, sassy self - unless snippy comments in his head or fiercely defending Benji are required.
Carson is a sweet guy who looks after his grandfather - another spirited character - and has many great friends and hockey teammates who are like family.
Criswell and Carson have an instant attraction, despite the awkward meet-cute, but they take a bit of time to get to know each other before the steaminess begins, finding a genuine connection that leads to a deep love, and a sweet HEA.
I received an ARC through GRR, this is my honest review.

Hot soup spilled all over a gorgeous man is absolutely not the way to make an impression. Criswell finds himself absolutely mortified when this happens to him. He’s a waiter on a dinner lake cruise. Carson is the victim of the hot soup incident. He’s immediately smitten with the good looking ginger waiter. He’s so taken that he immediately books a dinner cruise for his grandfather and himself. Carson is the captian of the hockey team in Watkins Glenn.
One would think he has everything but that is a facade. He wants someone to share his life with. That isn’t the reason he’s so taken with Criswell.
Criswell’s life is one diaster away from a total meltdown of his life. Dating is so far down the list that Criswell is amazed that Carson is asking him out.
The secondary characters are flat flipping wonderful and totally add to it.
When you sit down and read a book from start to finish then the author has done an excellent job. If you’ve read any of Vicki’s books then you will enjoy this book.
