What a great start to this series! Edwina lives with her Aunt, Uncle, and cousin Bennett. She has recently lost her father and is grieving. Miles is a friend of Bennett. Miles is also grieving over the loss of his wife and their unborn child and also his brother. After Miles comes for a visit with Bennett he meets Edwina. Edwina and Miles soon realize they can help each other grieve and have healing.
I really loved this story! It is so beautiful! Edwina and Miles get along so well and the wit and sarcasm between them is so fun. But not only that they help each other heal from their grief, even though Miles has a tougher time. I just loved how their relationship progressed. I also loved Bennett and the aunt. I am excited for the next story with Bennett! Overall, this is a great romance and I definitely recommend!

“Everyone struggles with their own battles, but that doesn’t mean we give up on finding happiness.”

••ARC Review: 5 stars! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

“Love is a choice. You must make it every single day.”

Dear Lady Edwina Lockwood is not only struggling from the loss of her father, but also the loss of her place in her home. Things only worsen as she realizes her uncle sees her as only a great burden. Her previous life of happiness and feeling loved are gone. And it seems any hope for a happy future is quickly fading away. Noble Miles Burke, Earl of Hilgrove, had a life filled with all the happiness he had ever dreamed possible, and in one breath it was ripped out of his grasp. He feels that he is destined to be alone, and that is better than risking excruciating loss once again. That is until his childhood friend Bennet Lockwood, Earl of Dunsby, invites him to stay for a fortnight…

“Love doesn’t always make sense. In fact, falling in love when you least expect it is the greatest kind of love.”

An Unwitting Match is the beginning of The Lockwood Family series. This is a light-hearted, clean, and lovely romance set in the Regency era with a lovely happily there after. It’s a dear story about coping with grief and finding love. There is an element of danger and drama mixed in adding additional layers to this story which has such heart, humor, and depth! I loved seeing how Lady Edwina offer Miles unexpected but much needed solace. Watching how Edwina and Miles spend more time together, find comfort in each other’s company, and both finding peace was heartwarming! This dear story is worth the read! 📚🙌🏻❤️

"You are more than your past. You have a future. You just need to know where to look for it."

I struggled some to get into this book, but it didn't take long to be drawn into the story. 🩷
Miles and Edwina's individual grief and struggles was soooo raw and heartbreaking, but so sweet to watch it slowly melt away and see them each learn and try again, together and apart. They start out as good friends and learn to open up and let go, even if it's very slow. 🩷
I laughed so many times throughout it, the banter between the siblings and also Miles and Edwina was the sweetest. 😅
It's a great reminder to always embrace life and always choose to just love, walk through the heartaches with someone close, and never close up to life. 🩷
A very enjoyable, sweet clean read that I highly recommend! 🩷

Sweet, period romance

Edwina and Miles’ story started out as two grieving friends of Bennett. Edwina, his cousin, lost her father, and Miles lost his wife, unborn baby, and brother. Both lost in deep mourning, as they interacted with each other they had a lovely fall that started as friends, and grew to much more.
Lovely romance, mysteries in a backstory about the estate, and good supporting characters made this a fun read. More of a 3.5 for me as a reader, but rounded up with the lovely cover.

Miles and Edwina are two broken people who come to be happier and learn to love each other. Their love story is beautiful. It is both healing and refreshing. I love that Edwina’s family anticipated her falling in love with Miles and even did a little matchmaking.

This is a sweet, regency read. Our heroine Edwina is in mourning over her father when her cousin’s friend comes to stay at the estate. Miles is in mourning over the loss of his wife, unborn child, and brother. These two find a sort of kindred spirit in one another. There is plenty of banter as Edwina is very headstrong and Miles is logical and steady. Edwina’s uncle seems to have something against her and that leads them on a merry chase as the story develops. It is a sweet read with friends and family. Some parts I just didn’t believe with the romance and dialogue. However, it all ends well and gives us a good look at future characters in the series. The romance is just kisses, intimacy level 1. 3.5 stars rounded up to 4.

This book was (insert dreamy sigh). It may fall in the Regency Romance genre, but this one had something special. The two main characters are both dealing with grief, intense life-altering grief. Though the causes and circumstances of their grief are quite different, they are both forever changed. And acceptance of grief in all its forms and for all its reasons is a topic that is personally important to me.

Lady Edwina Lockwood is not only struggling from the loss of her father, but also the loss of her place in her home. Things only worsen as she realizes her uncle now sees her as only a burden. Her previous life of happiness and feeling loved are gone. And it seems any hope for a happy future is quickly fading away.

Miles Burke, Earl of Hilgrove, had a life filled with all the happiness he had ever dreamed possible, and in one breath it is all ripped out of his grasp. He feels that he is destined to be alone, and that is better than risking excruciating loss once again. That is until his childhood friend Bennet Lockwood, Earl of Dunsby, invites him to stay for a fortnight.

This story dives into grief and its complexities. It displays how individuals uniquely cope and how others can help those grieving continue living. Edwina and Miles needed people (and a goat) outside themselves to motivate and guide them through their pain. I truly appreciated how they both found times that they connected to each other because of their grief, but also how comparison of their individual grief caused tension and frustration.

However, does this book only talk of grief? Absolutely not. There is flirting and romance, redemption and forgiveness, and a sprinkling of mystery and suspense. This book is full of goodness and all the things that lead to a happy ending.

“Trust your heart and choose to let go of fear.”

Laura Beers always brings the best stories to regency romance and this new series, The Lockwood Family, is another feather in her cap! We meet Lady Edwina Lockwood and her family (Uncle, Aunt and Cousins) in this poignant story about loss and grief. Edwina lost her father just a few months ago, her mother had passed when she was a child, now she's living in her childhood home with her Uncle, Aunt and cousins trying to process her mourning.

Her cousin Bennett invites one of his closest friends, Miles Burke to come and stay with them. He's also processing deep grief over the loss of his late wife and his brother. But through their grief, these two find a desire to want to live and be happy again.

Their romance was adorable to watch bloom as Miles is ever the gentleman towards Edwina. But she's also a very independent woman, raised by a father who let her have her own mind and enjoy less traditional activities. Which Miles find very refreshing. These two grow closer each day through their grief, but also through the new found happiness that life doesn't need to stay gloomy.

Part of the narrative is some additional drama over the family funds and why the tenants in the village are getting angry with how her Uncle is handling their needs as well as a mystery inheritance that Edwina desperately needs.

This book has everything from a little family drama in the countryside, to a blossoming romance between two very caring individuals and a happily ever after you love to see!

This is the beginning of a new series and I am in for the long haul! I loved Edwina and Miles. Both dealing with their own grief, each one had to learn how to process and move forward. Grief is difficult and many readers can relate to that process. I loved the friendship that they built and the trust they had for each other. This story has secrets, villains, friendship, and love. Beers makes it all come together in one wonderful story! I loved the witty banter and the relationships between each family member. I look forward to reading book two! (Let’s hope it is Bennet’s story). I received a complimentary copy of this book; all thoughts and opinions are my own.

I don’t like to leave bad reviews, but, in all honesty, this was a snooze. The dialogue was stilted and the choppy banter went on and on. Many of the come-backs were modern day and felt too far outside of the time period which became distracting. The villain was telegraphed as weak so there was no surprise. I’ll skip the rest of the series.

A clean story. Interesting story with a different storyline - two people who are grieving. The mystery side of the story I felt lacked some reality and for me the villain was obvious early on - classic disgruntled man of business. Bennett visits Stanley and queries the tenants complaints, lack of funds is cited, but when father shows the ledgers Bennett thinks the amounts are fair, so why doesn’t he wonder why are tenants upset. Later father says he’s paid for a cobbled street and church steeple. Apparently Stanley has creamed this money off so those things have not happened. Hasn’t father noticed on trips to village? Doesn’t his children say what new cobbles and steeple as they have visited. In that era church attendance was a very important thing, so the family would attend services. Didn’t he mention alleged new steeple to the rector, and as rector is planning on leaving over issues has he not raised concerns/parishioners issues the Marquis? Marquis’s sister is living incognito on the edge of village surely she has picked up on some of issues? And lastly as Stanley has taken Edwina’s inheritance of £10k why is he still there and not disappeared? £10k then is equivalent to over £1million now - I would have thought more than enough to disappear with and have a nice lifestyle.
I was disappointed not to hear Eloise and Melody’s response to the night’s excitement. I liked their characters.
Not specifically an issue with this story alone, but when pistols are suddenly needed and they are on display when are they loaded? Here the duelling pistols are in the parlour so I would think not loaded , but no mention of doing this (and time delay in doing it) Happens in quite a few stories.
So all that did not quite gel with me, but I did like the story and the growing relationship between Edwina and Miles, so I came up with 4 stars. I hope rest of series covers Winston and Miss Bowden, and especially Eloise and Melody.

I love reading the first book in a new series as many of the characters are introduced. This series introduces the Lockwood family. This story starts out as Lady Edwina Lockwood is still dealing with her grief over the loss of her father. Since her mother died they had been extremely close. Her uncle and his family have now moved into her home. Her cousin Bennett has tried to help her deal with her grief as he has watched over her. He has also tried to encourage her as she deals with the way her uncle has changed towards her since taking her father's title.

Bennett decides to invite his friend, Miles Burke, The Earl of Hilgrove to come for a visit. He is also dealing with the loss of his wife and unborn child followed by the death of his brother making him the heir to the title. He blames himself the the losses and carries the guilt and pain. Something about Edwina draws him- possibly the grief they both share. Their paths seem to continue to cross as Miles actually begins to seek her out. Being around her starts to bring healing to his heart. When he accidentally overhears a conversation that involves Edwina, Miles suddenly wants to protect her.

The two of them begin to work together to solve the secrets concerning the estate and her uncle.

Will Miles decide he is ready to give his heart again after the loss of his wife? Will Edwina reveal her feelings towards Miles?

I received a copy of this book form the author and this is my honest unbiased review.

4.5 rounded up

I always get excited when Laura Beers announces a new series, so I was thrilled to read the first book in The Lockwood Family. This is a heartwarming Regency romance that explores themes of grief, healing, and unexpected love.

Lady Edwina Lockwood and Lord Miles Hilgrove are both struggling with personal losses, when their paths cross at Brockhall Manor. Their initial interactions are marked by awkwardness and mutual discomfort, but as they spend more time together, they begin to develop a connection.

Miles blames himself for the loss of his wife and unborn child, and believes he won't be happy again. Edwina is mourning the loss of her father and the changes in the home she grew up in now that her aunt, uncle and cousins have moved in. I loved that Miles and Edwina kind of bonded while sharing their grief experiences and show that people grieve in different ways.

This is a slow burn romance as we watch Miles and Edwina's friendship deepen and become more. I think the author's portrayal of their emotional journey is both tender and authentic. I liked how spunky Edwina could be, as her father raised her to think for herself, and that Miles liked that about her. She wasn't like all the other young women.

The added element of mystery surrounding hidden secrets at Brockhall Manor adds the intrigue that I love. The danger that finds them as they uncover those secrets heightens the stakes, and Miles’ protective instincts toward Edwina deepen their emotional connection. I had my suspicions about the culprit of the missing funds but was still a little surprised when it was revealed.

I'm already looking forward to the next book in the series. I received a complimentary copy of the book. All thoughts and opinions in this review are my own.

A burden. Our FMC, Lady Edwina Lockwood, has lost her father, her last living parent, and overhears her once sweet uncle call her burden. Fortunately, she has her aunt and cousins as a loving support system though she struggles to feel welcome in what once was her home. Aside from the constant sorrow, harsh critiques from her uncle, she is hardly allowed to look forward to anything in life since her uncles wish is for her to be married off with no concern of a love match and without a season, he is more concerned with his twin daughters having a season. Her dear, humorous cousin, Bennet, invites his friend, Miles Burke, the Earl of Hilgrove, to be a houseguest. Miles is also grieving and is convinced he deserves to be in perpetual mourning and has no interest in socializing much less a match. While they find comfort in their mutual sorrows, they also find opposition from each other as the products of grief-stricken shells of what they once were.
The pair comes together to investigate the apparent disappearance of her inheritance, the care and funding of the villagers that has made them angry at the family, and the suspicious behavior of her uncle.
What I found most enjoyable, is the language and banter that was witty and funny without being sassy or snarky. It was intelligent and perfectly paced, and I loved the changes in perspective, and the protectiveness of her cousins.

Genre: Regency Romance

Clean Level: 🫧

I was in a reading slump when I started this one so it was hard to jump right in, but I definitely was loving it by the middle and fully loved it by the end.

Edwina’s and Mile’s love was so slowly built, it was killing me. Knowing they both held a high affection for each other and not saying anything, is what kept me drawn in. Especially Mile’s feeling. I wasn’t sure how he was going to learn to love again after losing his wife, who he was deeply in love with.

I believe the author did an excellent job in paling the characters emotions while dealing with the death of loved ones and trying to live a happy life again. No emotions were pushed or rushed. As I read I felt their emotions, rejoicing when they finally made it out of the dark times.

I loved the slow friendship to loving and trusting each other. I definitely would recommend this book and so excited that this is only the beginning of this series!

Content:
* No foul language
*Kiss only
* Talk of death of a parent
* Talk of death of brother
* Talk of death of wife

An Unwitting Match by @author_laura_beers
The Lockwood Family, book 1

Sigh. What an absolutely beautiful read! Laura is a new favorite! I can’t wait to get to more from her! Especially excited for Bennett’s story! He was a hilarious character. I found myself smiling so often in this read.

Every author has their own flare and every time I return to a Regency I’m in Love. This one was no different for me!

Edwina Lockwood was the most wholesome woman. Through her own mourning and pain she sees another’s need and selflessly serves.

Miles, Lord Hilgrove. Broken and grieving the death of his wife and his brother soon after. He feels he is broken beyond repair and because he loved his late wife so much he doesn’t feel there is enough room or that it is right for him to love again.

Favorite Moments
🌸Rescue from a runaway Horse
🌸The almost kiss
🌸And when he saves her from a bullet

It takes a near death experience to help you see what you hold most dear.

✨Favorite Quote:
“You have no idea what you do to me, do you?”

Thank you so much Laura for this gifted copy. Absolutely adored this read. Swoon worthy ending along with smiles and heartwarming moments throughout. I loved the overlying theme that you cannot measure another’s grief. We all grieve differently.

A charming beginning to the Lockwood family series. Miles and Edwina have both suffered loss and struggle with their grief. Bennett Lockwood, Edwina’s cousin and Miles friend, had hoped that they would be able to help each other and they would be able to find happiness again. Which is why he asked Miles to come for a visit. Edwina had been living with his family since the passing of her father. I enjoyed getting to know the characters. I liked Miles and Edwina from the beginning. I was pleased of the witty banter between them and Bennett. Not only was it a sweet romance in the making, but a bit of a mystery to solve. This made for an intriguing storyline. Another thing I liked about this story was learning the characters in the family throughout the book not all at the beginning, so it wasn’t as confusing. We meet Bennett’s sisters and brother later on in the story. I am looking forward to Bennett’s story next, and I think his sister’s stories will be very entertaining. They are quite a pair. This is a clean, wholesome Regency romance. I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Laura Beers opens her new series, The Lockwood Family, with a delightful and heartfelt Regency tale that immediately draws readers into a world of charm, decorum, and quiet emotional depth. An Unwitting Match strikes the perfect balance between friendship, family loyalty, and the slow unfurling of an unexpected love story.

From the first chapter, Beers captures the gentle rhythm of Regency life, weaving together nuanced characters and just enough intrigue to keep the pages turning. The romance builds with patience and authenticity, offering the kind of emotional connection often missing in modern love stories. The underlying themes of trust, self-discovery, and social expectation are handled with elegance and restraint.

Readers who love clean, wholesome historical romances will find this novel irresistible. The family dynamics add depth, the friendship between the leads feels sincere, and the slow-burn romance blossoms beautifully into something truly satisfying. With its warm tone and graceful storytelling, An Unwitting Match sets a high bar for the rest of the series.

A must-read for anyone who adores sweet Regency romance with a touch of intrigue and a whole lot of heart.

What a beautiful new series kickoff off from Laura Beers!

Dealing with insurmountable grief, finding new love, and learning to stand on one's own feet are all major themes in this Regency 'falling in love with the brother figure's best friend" story. Lady Edwina has lost her father and even some of her status that comes with being the daughter of an Earl. Her beloved uncle, the new Earl, has decided that she is a drain on his coffers and in his home and that she must get married as soon as may be, but doubting he can give her a season. When her favorite cousin, the Viscount, invites his grieving friend, Lord Hilgrove, to visit so he can cheer him up, the house is buried in so much grief and angst that many futures seem uncertain.

Lady Edwina and Lord Hilgrove have plenty of foot-in-mouth moments while developing a friendship over their shared grief. And when a mystery involving the new Earl, Lady Edwina's inheritance, and the appearance of a suspicious family on their land occurs, it gives them a chance to forge a bond in something other than grief and to build a friendship with a strong foundation.

I love how each of the characters have different expressions of grief, and it is ultimately what binds them. There are many big feelings to be explored throughout the tale, and the ending is oh-so-satisfying in both the resolution of the mystery and the finding of new romance.

I loved it, and I can't wait to read the rest of the series!

I received a complimentary copy of the author's wonderful book to read and review. All thoughts contained here are my own.

Edwina’s father passed away, leaving her in the care of her uncle. However, her mourning is complicated by her uncle’s ill treatment of her. But her cousin, Bennett, strives to make her life easier and is a true friend to her.

Bennett invites his friend, Myles, to stay with him in order to help him recover from the loss of his wife and brother. But Myles finds more solace with his relationship with Edwina because he has someone also in the midst in mourning, a common ground.

It was nice to see the budding romance between Myles and Edwina, and there was also a minor mystery within the story, which came to somewhat a predictable conclusion, but since it was a short novel, it had to be. This book did fit the formula of a typical Regency Romance, but sometimes that is why you read such a story.

It had a very nice HEA, and I did enjoy reading it for the sake of reading another one of these kinds of sweet and clean Regency Romances. However, it was nothing special, but I’m going to give it 3***

This is book one of a new series and I am so excited about these characters! The Lockwood family is going to be fun getting to know better and better as the series progresses.

Miles and Edwina are both dealing with great loss. At the beginning of the book both are having a hard time dealing with their grief. Soon after meeting they discover that not only can they understand what the other is going through, but they can help each other to heal. And that is exactly what happens. And as their bond of friendship grows stronger, deeper feelings start to arise. It’s a bit of a back and forth as one of the characters is fighting these feelings cropping up but they both come to realize what they really want in the end. The epilogue was a great addition!

I look forward to the next book in the series!

So much witty banter between all the characters, I laughed out loud! An incredible beginning to a new series. I am already looking forward to Book 2!!

Edwina is grieving her father while at the same time feeling unwanted and a burden. Thankfully, she has her cousin Bennet to encourage her. Miles is still grieving his losses and annoyed with Bennet’s happy attitude. Edwina and Miles help each other process their grief, moving forward while remembering their loved ones. Edwina is holding out for love because she knows she deserves it and Miles doesn’t think he can take the chance to love again.

Favorite line “ I have tried to fight it, repeatedly, but I have fallen madly, irrevocably in love with you.”

A wonderful story!
This romance has loss, villains, secrets, misplaced judgements, and a generous helping of humor that Laura Beers does so well. It will keep you reading to the end. Edwina is now living with her uncle, the new Lord Dallington, after the loss of her father and things are not going well. As Edwins struggles to find her new role, her cousin Bennett invites Miles, who with the loss of his brother has become the new Earl of Highgrove, to visit. As Edwina and Miles begin to interact, they discover another person who can truly understand the loss each is facing. But they also begin to notice things that do not seem as they should be. As they proceed to investigate secrets and start to question what is being said discoveries come that are unsettling. A truly enchanting story that makes you want to keep reading. I received an early copy and this is my honest review.

Okay friends. Laura Beers has done it again. Every book I've read that Laura has written I have loved, and An Unwitting Match is no exception.

There is so much to love in this story - a kind hearted heroine, an honorable hero, awesome character growth, lovable side characters, the best banter, a villain that deserves a facer, plot twists you didn't see coming, the sweetest romance...seriously what is there not to love here?!

Edwina and Miles were the cutest couple. I loved how they helped each other overcome their struggles and find reasons to be happy again. They are two characters you can't help but love and I was so excited when things finally worked out for the two of them.

If this book isn't on your TBR lists already, it needs to be. Trust me friends. This is one book you do not want to miss. I have spoken.

Lady Edwina Lockwood is suffering with grief at the loss of her father and wants to be left alone to cope with her loss. When her cousin invites Lord Hilgrove to visit Brockhall Manor, she wants nothing to do with the new house guest.

Lord Hilgrove is also dealing with the recent loss of his wife and brother. He, too, wants to be left alone but he finds Lady Edwina charming and she is able to sooth his soul. He is not willing to risk his heart by loving someone else. But he and Lady Edwina become friends as they provide solace to one another.

This story is a quick read and I love the witty exchanges between the characters. I enjoy reading all of Laura Beers books and can't wait for more to make their way to my kindle.

too modern

Too many modern touches. In both language and circumstance. It also dragged; if Miles claimed to not be able to betray his dead wife one more time…
Also, I realize that everyone grieves differently but everyone’s reactions seemed a bit off. I didn’t understand the purpose of the following characters: Winston, the new butler, and to some extent the twins, although I do realize they are meant to continue the series.
Why didn’t Miles think about what he heard and suspect the true villain? That was just sloppy.
The carriage outside the cottage was also unbelievably obvious. I might give the next one a try, but if it’s too trope filled I’ll have to pass on the rest.

Miles and Edwina both suffer from profound grief at the loss of loved ones. Upon meeting, they find great comfort in the healing they feel as they share their feelings and thoughts. As they grow closer, friendship turns to something more. This is such a sweet story about coping with grief and finding love. There is an element of danger and drama mixed in adding additional layers to the story. The introduction of other Lockwood family members gives a sneak preview of what lies ahead, and has me impatient for the next book to come out. This clean, sweet story is part of a series, but can definitely be read as a standalone.

Not as suspenseful…predictable…

Having read quite a few of Laura Beer’s other books, this book didn’t seem to quite measure up - not as suspenseful & a tad predictable & redundant - we meet Edwina & Miles - Edwina seeking a love match & Miles having had a love match & lost her is determined to never love again. Both Edwina & Miles are dealing with loss & grief & in turn learn to help one another. Yet there’s a few mysteries - what’s going on with Edwina’s uncle & her cousins? Why are the townspeople so upset with her Uncle? Will Edwina & Miles be truthful with one another?
