From REMINGTON KANE, the author of the REVENGE Series and the TANNER Series MURDER - A thrilling murder mystery with deadly twists, romance, and a shocking finale
A man accused of murder has the perfect alibi—he was killing someone else.
John Beckett stands accused of the brutal murder of his wife, but he knows the he is innocent. However, his alibi only makes things worse—he was committing premeditated murder at the time of his wife’s death.
As the evidence stacks against him and the investigation, led by a driven female detective, grows more intense, Beckett must face the horrifying reality that someone has framed him for his wife’s murder.
Was it the police chief, a jilted lover seeking revenge on Laura for leaving him to be with Beckett? Or perhaps the town’s notorious peeping tom, whose twisted desires may have turned violent? Beckett’s own brother-in-law, an alcoholic with a history of violence, could also be a suspect. And then there’s his alluring young neighbor, who claims to know the truth about Laura’s death—but she carries a knife and may not be as innocent as she seems.
As Beckett fights to clear his name and stay out of prison, he finds himself drawn to his beautiful defense attorney. But as their attraction grows stronger, so does the danger surrounding them. Will they discover the true killer before it’s too late? Or will Beckett be sentenced to a life behind bars for a crime he didn’t commit?
With each passing day, Beckett’s fate hangs in the balance as he desperately tries to unravel the web of lies and deceit surrounding his wife’s death. The tension builds as secrets are uncovered and dark motives are revealed, leading to a shocking climax both inside and outside of the courtroom, which will leave readers on the edge of their seats.
Can Beckett find justice and clear his name, or will he become another casualty in a deadly game of betrayal and revenge?
Remington Kane is an American author that writes action-packed thrillers. The author might be unfamiliar to some people because Remington Kane is actually a pseudonym for Donald Wells.
Donald Wells has garnered a reputation for writing darker and somewhat serious novels about killers. The author was born in New Jersey. He never really left and has since made a home there. Like most of his peers, Donald Wells was an avid reader as a child.
He spent many an hour devouring every book he came across. And it wasn’t long before he began to yearn for the chance to write. Like many aspiring authors, Donald Wells knew he had the capacity to tell stories. However, he was a little hesitant to venture into such uncharted waters, not only because he didn’t know where to start with regards to writing a book but also because he didn’t have confidence in his own ability to produce compelling fiction.
Again, like most notable authors, Donald meandered about for a while. Rather than going into publishing the first chance he got, Donald tried his hand at various odd jobs. He worked as an insurance salesman, a Real Estate Sales person, and even a Retail manager.
The jobs, though seemingly meaningless in the grand scheme of things, did wonders for the author’s writing capabilities. Whether he was driving trucks or cleaning floors, Donald gained insight into the workings of the world.
He met unexpected people and heard their intriguing stories. He came across numerous strange encounters and even participated in some of them. He essentially dipped into so many unique aspects of life that it came as no surprise that he had more than enough stories rattling around his head when it finally came time to write his first novel.
Not that many authors can claim to have been offered a chance to act as bodyguard to a drug dealer. Since getting his first book sold, though, Donald has finally settled in his career. The author loves writing novels and there is nothing he else he would rather be doing. The fact that he has found a way to make money out of his passion makes him one of the luckier individuals in the world.
By the time Donald Wells began writing as Remington Kane, he had already become established as a novelist with numerous thrillers under his name. However, writing as Remington practically took over his life.
This is because Donald has achieved more success writing as Remington Kane than he did producing novels under his real name. Kane is best known for the Tanner series of novels. Tanner is a hit man who accepts a job to take out a mob boss.
When he is betrayed and thrown into prison, Tanner thinks of little else besides getting revenge. And once he finally gets his freedom, the hit man becomes a one man army, engaging in a brutal way against a crime organization known as the Conglomerate.
Each new book sees Tanner raising the stakes by finding a new target that will sting the Conglomerate in ways they couldn’t possibly fathom.
Remington Kane has been praised for the Tanner novels because Tanner is such a refreshing hero. The protagonist is so average physically, devoid of the exaggerated traits that most action heroes seem to bear. If not for his natural fighting and survival instincts, one would be hard pressed to tell Tanner apart from any other ordinary man on the street.
This book has it all. The plot, while similar to some other books, is a fantastic roller coaster ride.
Beckett accused of a murder he couldn't have done, or could he, as he was killing someone else. OR WAS HE!!
More twists and turns with each chapter. I had to stop and think after each chapter as the characters, who you thought they were and were about, have shocking revelations about them.
The finale comes out of nowhere to stun you!
I was an advance reader for this book and can honestly say this book ranks at or near the top for suspense, twists and turns, and overall quality. I do not see the author surpassing this masterpiece. Remington --prove me wrong!!
I usually don’t read books over 500 pages as I tend to get bored as the stories grow tired. HOWEVER this book being just over 600 was well written and kept an enjoyable pace throughout. Remington Kane is a very talented writer and this book proves it. Great characters and story. This was an excellent read! Disclaimer I did receive an advance copy but that shouldn’t matter as the book is excellent! Wow!
When I get a notification that this Author has another story ready to read, I get it immediately. I know from experience that I will enjoy reading this immensely! A new series has started and I am ecstatic as I'm reading it. Another fantastic story that captures my attention from the beginning and believe me when I say it never ends! I feel like I've been on a roller coaster as I'm reading this. This is one more time that this Author continue's to amaze me with his talent!
Excellent read. I was given the privilege of getting a pre release. This story has more twists and turns than the latest Amusement Park thrill ride. Becket is a self made millionaire with his name on many buildings. He has a dark secret but is accused of a different crime. Old rivalries that should have faded get in the way of objective investigations and tunnel vision. Is John Beckett guilty of his wife’s death or maybe the death of her part time lover? There is one possible oops and it is in capitalizing, it is in my notes. I would have been able to read this in 2 months with myunlimited subscription, so my review has not been tainted. Why 4 stars and not 5, because no one is perfect and there is always room for improvement. There should be 10 stars so I could award 9😀. Excellent convoluted, keep you awake nights novel.
Almost didn’t finish it. Really disliked Beckett. Didn’t see any redeeming qualities. But I hung in and I am glad I did. Beckett transformed into a better person than I expected. The supporting characters were developed nicely. We’re kept guessing about the bad guys. Couple of nice twists. Plenty of suspense. Basic problem is that I feel it was too long. A Tanner book you can read in a couple of hours. I was reading this for a long time and was only at 12%. As I said I am glad I did finish it.
Having read all of Mr. Kane's books, I was surprised to see this pop up in my Kindle "Authors You Follow" list. Hoping it was not the last Tanner, I reviewed the blurb. I most certainly did not look at the page count. The page count is almost three times his usual series. I didn't notice. I read straight through, literally not stopping to eat. This is nothing like any of Mr. Kane's books. No assassins. No bounty hunters. Only a good murder mystery in a very small town. Several murders, in fact. The first will not shock the reader.
Sometimes, the murdered person deserves it. In this case, the victim surely did. However, the murder spree continues. The reader knows what happened to the first victim. The others? Mr. Kane gives us so many others with reason and opportunity, leading us into the underbelly of small-town New Jersey.
John Beckett (never Mr. Beckett, never John, just Beckett) has worked hard all of his life to prove he is nothing like his parents: an alcoholic father and a schizophrenic mother. He now has his name on businesses all over town. The one he is most proud of is MacKenzie-Beckett Construction Company. Mr. MacKenzie took Beckett under his wing and taught him all about the construction business. After MacKenzie died, Beckett kept the MacKenzie name on the company. Least he could do, considering Mr. MacKenzie's daughter married Beckett and changed her name.
Beckett and the love of his life, Laura, have been married 20 years when the book opens. Beckett discovers Laura had, unfortunately, had an affair with the wrong man. That man started blackmailing Laura, until Beckett finds out. The blackmailing stopped when Beckett returns home one night and finds Laura dead. The reader knows Beckett didn't kill her, but the chief of police believes he did. The chief had loved Laura for years until Laura dumped him for Beckett. The chief is convinced Beckett killed her and had Beckett arrested for her murder. He can barely control his anger that instead of Laura marrying the chief, she chose Beckett.
Although Beckett repeatedly requests a lawyer, the chief transfers Beckett between jails effectively hiding Beckett until his first appearance. Unbeknownst to Beckett or the chief, his right-hand man at the construction company hired the best lawyer for Beckett he could find. Alexis Weller. She finally tracks Beckett down, despite the chief's playing games with Beckettʼs whereabouts. The evidence looks bad for Beckett, especially once cadaver dogs find a body on the site of the construction company.
Here, Mr. Kane's writing shows his ability to play with his readers' heads, so sneakily he puts his readers through the wringer as he deftly changes the whodunit until the reader is completely sure they know what happened until they don't. The characters are all tightly written. No three words were used when one would do.
There are two characters who stand out as oddly out of place until the chief's brother falls in love with one. Ah, not so out of place as I once thought. Although I knew who the author is, I recognized some of his "tells" and would have realized it was Mr. Kane. Don't worry about the page length. There are no extraneous words. Plan to read it nonstop. If you like authors (of any genre) who play head games with their readers, this book is for you. Waiting a year for the next one is going to drive me crazy, especially with the last Tanner coming out.
Do not start this book if you had planned on doing something else before you finish this book. Do not lay in the sun to read this - you will forget about everything and get a sunburn. Do not make dinner plans with someone else - you will forget about them. This book is that good. You will not do anything else until you finish this book.
After reading this book, expect Remington Kane to be among the "biggie" writers - definitely up there with Baldacci, Patterson, Child, etc. This book was one of the best books I have read this year - no, not this year, but in the past 5 years!. While it is a change from his series books - this standalone is outstanding and once you start reading you will want to keep reading till you finish the book.
This is a murder/mystery and the suspense all along will keep you guessing. The characters are believable and you feel like you know them. You will definitely root for Beckett all through the book.
As you can guess from the title there is a murder and an alibi. Beckett is accused of murdering his wife, but did not do it. His alibi would be - he was actually murdering someone else. The book continues and the author did a wonderful job making you want to turn the next page instead of doing something else.
He was one of my favorite authors before this book, and when I download one of his books, I always plan on enough time to read it completely. Since this book was longer, I tried reading in one sitting, but gave up at 3am and started on it first thing the next morning.
If you had to select only one book to read this year - this should be the one!
I was fortunate enough to receive an advance copy of this book in return for an honest review and I'm so glad that I did. This is a brilliant read. It's very long, and difficult to put down, so I was frequently reading into the small hours! Beckett is a self made millionaire who is accused of a murder he can't possibly have committed. He has a rock solid alibi but there's no way he can use it. Added to that, he has a sworn enemy within the police force, who is convinced Beckett is guilty and will do his utmost to make certain Beckett is convicted. The question is, will Beckett discover the truth, or will the murder remain forever unsolved? This story is full of twists and turns, with any number of possible culprits and a whole variety of other things going on at the same time. Be prepared for a real roller coaster ride and enjoy!
Fantastic book! Part legal thriller, murder mystery and some romance, this book had me guessing until the end. And I really thought I had it figured out about half-way through, but I was wrong, a couple of times. Beckett is a self-made millionaire who finds out his wife is cheating on him. After viewing a disgusting video being used to extort money from the wife he kills her lover, then his wife is murdered. He is accused and arrested for her murder, which he didn't do, but his alibi is the murder of her lover. Beckett can't get a break as the sheriff hates him and the detective working the job is just too good at her job. This book has so many ups and downs, twists and turns, highs and lows you will not want to stop reading until the shocking ending. Loved it!
I received this book as an advance reader copy. I have read pretty much all of Remington Kane's novels. This is the first of a new series by the author. It might just be my favorite of all. There is an interesting premise to the book, and the summary engages the reader before the first page is turned. The characters are likable, and while the average reader won't be able to relate to the circumstances, all can relate to the feelings of despair. The pacing was great, and the story flowed smoothly. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series.
I have read a number of Debra Webb's books and Alibi for Murder is one of my favorites. I was a little nervous when I saw it was a Harlequin Intrigue book, but it really is 99% mystery and only 1% romance. The plot was interesting and I cared about the characters. The storyline moved at just the right pace. I listened to the audiobook and enjoyed the narrator, Megan Tusing. I would rank this book 4.9 out of 5 stars.
Nothing rushed here! A well-thought-out and very complete mystery/suspense/romance novel with a tense trial to boot. I really enjoyed it and was happy to have discovered the writings of Remington Kane. I am sorry it took me so long.
An in-depth story, well-written and with wonderful characters makes this read one that is hard to put down. Its length just prolonged the entertaining experience. I look forward to reading more by this author.
This book is so much better than other books by this author. I started to wonder if I was reading a book written by by someone else. Gone are the nearly juvenile descriptions of women and lustful thoughts. I didn’t want to finish reading this book, not because it was dreadful, because it is so much better than than his other series of books.
Oh my God. This book was definitely the best book I’ve read. It had so many twists and had me guessing who the murderer was only to be wrong. Wow it’s interesting how each character acted in these crimes. I love this author. I couldn’t put it down. Highly recommend.
I don't usually post bad reviews but I feel the need to do so in this instance. Apparently this is the first in a series. Take my advice and just say no. The writing is terrible. I got a free copy and it was NOT free - it cost me time I wish I had not spent on it - I hope to spare others that loss.
This book is beyond good. I was wondering why it was so long because I thought I had it all figured out. Only to realize I didn’t know anything. I’ve read maybe 80 of Remington Kane’s books and I will rank this one right up at the top.
WOW! This book was sooo good! I read and did audio while driving! Would definitely recommend! It was an easy read everything flowed nicely the plat twist was good I never would have guessed all the thoughts I had were wrong! lol yes read!!
The whole book made you wonder on how he was gonna get off how they were gonna find the guy that was really the bad person It was a great book Great way to end the whole thing.
I have read many books in my lifetime. But,this, by far, ranks number one . A great mystery. Great characters ...suspense from page one . Read it. You won't be disappointed. Thank you for entrainment this book provided me!
Well judged, violent and graphic crime thriller, from set up, through investigation to courtroom drama, with numerous twists and turns along the way. Believable characters, both likeable and very much not. Not a good look for the fourth estate.
What a great book kept me wanting to read and read. This was thr best book I have read in a few years please keep them coming as my life is reading and Amazon has kept me alive Thank you for everything.
