Originally published as Gay Romance in Tartan - 2014. Callum McCrea is 23. Heir to a vast Scottish estate, and almost engaged to the beautiful girl next door (herself the heiress to the adjoining estate) he seems to have everything he could want. But then 19-year-old Teddy, product of a children’s home in the north of England, joins the domestic staff. The two men fall in love … and the domestic and dynastic apple-carts are well and truly upset. This is the tale of a forbidden love that crosses the upstairs-downstairs divide as well as transgressing other social norms upheld by most landed gentry. The McCrea family motto is ‘Fortudine’ - With Fortitude. By the end of the book, though, a codicil has been Love Conquers All. ‘Amor Vincit Omnia.’

Scotland is a beautiful place to visit. I have several times. I have my kit and kilt along with a ancestral taste for Scotch and pubs.
This book is a medical training adventure for Cal as he tries to handle his father's imminent death from cancer. The Commander was Navy and very active in life. But the world is changing and so is the estate that Cal will soon inherit. The house has plenty of room for guests even as it is a bit short staffed. Cal is attending training in Edinburgh and home on weekends.
Teddy is a boy who was orphaned young but raised in care homes with other children until old enough to try to make it on his own. He is 19 and share a room with Mike. But the economy is struggling and Teddy has lost his job in a wine bar that shut down. He travels to Cal's estate for an interview to become a butler. He is normally shy and quiet, but manages to impress Cal's stepmother and Iza the cook who is currently trying to hold the house together. Teddy's time with Cal is mostly riding from the train station to the estate with Cal for the interview and back. Then returning to begin the job two days later. Their time together is surprisingly magical as both struggle to communicate. Cal is a few year older and much more educated in medicine and life.
Walking the dogs, sharing time, and a pheasant hunt ensure that they are linked. But the Commander locks them together before passing and changing everything.
The life and organization changes a lot as the funeral brings new friends to visit. Then more magic happens as the friends and even family members pair off to find new happiness and purpose together.
Another great read from Anthony! I find I get hungry while reading Anthony's books. And constantly mapping the stories progress from city too city. This one was wonderful as usual. Cal and Teddy where a delight.
Yet another Anthony McDonald masterpiece. I am not sure quite how he achieves it but each book seems to eclipse the previous one. No mean feat by any standards. Brilliant writing by a brilliant author.
