A Florida farmer in the 1960s saves and adopts a raccoon just before planting a field of watermelons. This book tells the story of how he raises both his crop and his pet, and solves the mystery of who is raiding his field of nearly grown melons.
This is the sort of book I would have read as a child. It has a mystery, and it has a rescued animal. It didn't ring any bells, so I can't say that I did read it, but I well could have.
The story is good, but I guessed part of the mystery pretty early on. The characters were engaging and entertaining. There are a couple of Florida specific things that were mentioned (like sand, everywhere!) that point to the authors authenticity as a resident of the state.
