Rhys turned to writing children’s books under her married name, Janet Quin-Harkin. Her first picture book was an immediate success and won several awards. More picture books followed, then her agent asked her to write a book for young adults. This was a turning point in Rhys’s career. Her first young adult novel was an instant hit. By her third she was selling half a million copies. Many more popular YA novels followed until Rhys decided she had said all she wanted to say about teenage love and angst, and she turned her real love—mysteries.

Janet Quin Harkin also writes murder mysteries under the name Rhys Bowen.
In the Sweet Dreams world this would be more of a 4/4.5 stars. It’s definitely one of the better ones (Janet Quin-Harkin is the best of all the SD writers).
Not sure about the kissing another person while you still have a boyfriend/girlfriend (her Aunt says “It’s not like he’s engaged to the other girl...”, nice one Aunty, encourage that infidelity 👍) but it’s all resolved nicely because her boyfriend is back home getting it on with her so called best friend anyway (lol at his shitty letter dumping her ).
Anyway, I enjoyed it. It started off more like a mystery but ended up a summer fling. Good teenage stuff.
Some thoughts on reading GoaC: 1. Meredith is awful. Maybe she'll get swept out to sea. 2. Whut? You think a *ghost* is working at the supermarket? And your parents let you travel halfway across the country BY YOURSELF? 3. Nat is a smuggler. Because...reasons? Nat is not a smuggler, Meredith. You, however, are an idiot. 4. Meredith finally deigns to read one of her aunt's novels. Which her family make fun of. Nice. 5. Oh, sweet baby Jesus. The eeeevil Other Woman is wearing an ORANGE JUMPSUIT! An orange jumpsuit. Bwahahaha!!!!! This may be the best book ever!
Found a box of second hand books in front of a house that wanted to be taken away, because the people were moving house, it was my pleasure doing them a favour. l am forty years old, remembering these books in the 80 s, knowing my mother not letting me read these books. So after all these years l had an opportunity to read one.
Very cute, very typical of teenage love and the scenery of the storyline was very sweet.
l have a couple more of these books to read, l will read more. LOL
