From the author of "Voyage of the Dead" and the "Sovereign Spirit Saga" comes a whole new type of apocalypse. Inspired by "Lucifer's Hammer" and other epic science fiction novels, David Forsyth brings the fear, suspense and thrilling action of "end of the world as we know it" fiction into focus aboard a cruise ship en route to Australia when an asteroid strikes the Central Pacific Ocean. Whatever image that description evokes is nothing compared to the epic forces of nature, human drama, and pain of loss you will encounter in this book. Not for the faint of heart. The author takes no responsibility for decreased bookings on cruise ships. Read at your own risk. The scariest part is that this story is based on true possibilities. Are you game?
For fans of Forsyth's other work, sorry, no zombies in this one. But if you like the idea of facing the end of the world on a ship at sea (as in Voyage of the Dead), then you should enjoy this adventure too. Who needs zombies when the world itself turns against you?
Sedulity: noun. Constant in purpose and intent. Assiduous, steadfast, tireless, indefatigable.
Praise for Forsyth's Voyage of the Dead and Sovereign Spirit Saga: "It's Clive Cussler meets Max Brooks." "I've read over 130 zombie books(retired and a lot of time). This one is by far the best one so far." "I was so caught up in the story I had stayed up all night to finish the book and even then I couldn't wait for the next one!" "After reading the first book, which I could not put down.I couldn't wait for 2&3' now I just rate all other zombie genre books against these...so far,,these are the best." "The writing is so good, the story so captivating and the characters so compelling that I have plowed through all three books in the trilogy in four days." "Read all three back to back, really good storyline and characters.I would recommend this book and all others by David."

From the Start of this book I felt as though I was a passenger on the cruise. I could smell the sea air, & hear the water as it hit the ship. This book has introduced me to new things I never knew about before like the "line crossing" ceremony. As I read the book I found some normal everyday people become extraordinary heroes. Impact is full of action, happiness, fear, love, selflessness towards themselves only to save those around them. I have to admit while reading this book at first I thought I want to go on another cruise then as I got more into the book I found myself thinking... nah I think I'll keep these big feet on the ground! But as usual David finds a way to show the BEST place to be in an event such as a meteor hit is in a ship. Heroes were made as the book went on! David has a great way of making you, the reader, feel as though YOU are a passenger on the ship & YOU are freaking out about drowning or burning alive. That shows true talent being able place your readers INSIDE the story! I can't wait for Book 2 & see what happens next! I have to ask.... how many of you now have a plan in place in case something like this happens in real life? How many of you started the wheels in your head about what you would need to do? How many of you would have been able to be as calm as the Captain? I love how David Forsyth makes you think of these things w/out you even realizing it!!!! Absolutely recommending you to purchase this awesome book & be your own judge on how you like it!?!
I am a cruise afficionado, having been on over forty cruises in my lifetime. That said, I must admit I was drawn to Sedulity.
This book asks the question: When the end comes where would you like to be? My answer is: If we are struck by a rogue asteroid and plunged into another glacial winter then I would most certainly like to be on a cruise ship with a captain like Mikal Krystos at the helm.
The S.S.Sedulity is on a repositioning cruise to Australia when disaster strikes. Crew and passengers watch as the flaming asteroid streaks overhead and lands about one hundred miles away in the central Pacific Ocean. That’s just the beginning of the disaster. Blast waves, mile-high tsunami-like waves followed by normal tsunamis, shifting of tectonic plates, the awakening of volcanoes, all of these occur in short order. Don’t even think about the radioactive acid rain that falls on everyone and ignites what’s left. There are many lives lost at sea but many survivors as well. As the captain and his advisors (Kevin Summers – a meteorlogist and Professor Farnum – an Earth and Geology professor) prepare for the worst, they work feverishly to determine a safe (existing) port-of-call while trying to warn the rest of the world. They eventually watch television coverage of coastlines and countries being wiped out. Earth will never be the same again. But can man survive this devastation when the dinosaurs of old could not?
A fast moving thriller with very plausible scenarios that will keep the reader on the edge of their seats.
Quit chopping books up into unnecessary series!!!!!!
Although the plot, characters, and accurate-ish story is good, I'm quite sick to death of all the authors deciding to do a trilogy (or worse, even longer) with what you know as a reader could have been written and told in ONE BOOK. I love continuations, but only when I feel each book can stand alone. NOT when it feels like someone chops a story up to make more money. I'm really not sure if I will support this new trend anymore. Not all new indie authors with book series do this. Take Atlantis Gene for example. Each book told a story and each book of the trilogy that followed was the perfect length and left the reader feeling satisfied. This felt like the sample.
A surprisingly fast paced story about the end of the world. Well, more or less. Asteroid, tsunamis, earthquakes: every type of catastrophy is described. Unfortunately the book is also full of clichés. The captain is heroic and so is his wife (of course). The ""Texan" is loudmouthed has a gun and made his millions with oil (what else?). Still, the catastrophies are nicely described and it's a quick read. And it aroused my interest enough that I'll get the next book in the series as well.
I've read and throughly enjoyed David Forsyth's Sovereign Spirit saga, the tale of survivors aboard a ship avoiding a worldwide zombie apocalypse. When I saw David had brought out a new novel set on a cruise liner and involving this time an asteroid impact apocalypse, I was intrigued and wanted to have a read of it.
I actually really enjoyed it, I have read a lot of apocalyptic fiction, but not anything involving an asteroid impact, so this was new territory for me. I like the way the story builds tension, introduces a nice batch of characters and then hits you with a disaster of immense proportions and it's shocking brutality. At the beginning of each chapter there is a nice intro informing the reader of the asteroid impact details and how this is affecting the globe. David has obviously done his scientific homework and research as the asteroid information and subsequent earthquakes & tsunamis seem very real. The chapters move along nicely and you do feel you can get to know and feel something for the characters and the predicament they find themselves in. A great read and i shall definitely be there for book 2: Aftershock!
There is much to praise about this book. The action is compelling and exciting. The accuracy and extensiveness of the science lends the story credibility. In fact, I learned quite a bit about what might very well be expected to occur if an incident of this nature were to happen. The research that went into this narrative is evident throughout the book.
The dramatic action and traumatic events are well communicated. In some ways words can induce images that special effects artists would be hard pressed to match - one's imagination is a powerful thing and the author does a masterful job inducing appropriate imagery.
The characterizations are good and, with a few of the characters, excellent. But the psychological trauma and resultant manifestations are not as insightful as one might wish. The characters boarder on stereotypes at times but this doesn't really detract from the excitement of the storyline. This is a story of external, not internal turmoil.
Hard to rate another book with 5 stars after this book!!
I have had this book for what year and only now read it.if I only knew! An entire book of the meteor strike and it's affects for the first 12hrs.it's scary as it's realistic.though it takes place on a cruise ship, we also get bits about what's going on on land.in fact, that aspect, Mr author, would make a great sequel book: different point of view of the same event.this is well written with few typos that don't detract.the only reason I read this book now was I didn't have anything more interesting sounding and I saw a book 2 came out.so that IS my next book.oh and I saw this author does zombie books.I don't like those types and this book DOES NOT have zombies!I really think this is worth your reading if you do have that morbid interest in disaster novels!
End-of-the-world scenarios are two a penny on Kindle at the moment. Like Zombi apocalypses and vampire stories they’ve saturated the market to such a degree that finding a good one is actually a struggle. Enter the the cruise ship Sedulity.
I was, I will confess, hooked. We aren’t overwhelmed with characters, there’s the potential with a thousand passengers aboard the cruise liner but Forsyth sticks to a small set for this outing. This is a good thing, you really get a feel for them (I almost cried at the phone call in the life boat). I’m going to start the second one now. Highly recommended, because the run-of-the-mill the world is ending story just got an injection of very, very good writing.
Welcome aboard the majestic of the sea Sedulity Pull up a deck chair and enjoy the night sky....as an asteroid impacts in the sea. Enjoy a tropical drink like a ' Heat Blast','Earthquake',Tsunami' or 'Hot Rain' or just enjoy the real events from the smoldering decks. Spend a day shopping and sight seeing at one of our many ports of call if any of them still exist. Sedulity has everything for the cruise enthusiast. Seriously great characters, tense story and believable science tied with the forbearance of the continued saga aboard the Sedulity.
If there is no category of hard apocalypse, it should be introduced for this book. A very interesting, though at some times dry, read of the events that might follow in the immediate first hours after an asteroid strike, which David adds some life into by conflating those events with ocean liner tropes.
If you enjoyed Footfall of Larry Niven, you'll like this story as well, especially if it might be expanded into further description of events in a bigger scale. If it's on the same quality as Voyage of the Dead, I look very much forward to an enjoyable read.
This story has good, likeable characters, a pulse pounding plot and is based on solid scientific research. I recommend it for summer reading in a safe zone such as a mountain lodge or a dessert retreat. Do not read this book on a cruise ship or on a beach in Los Angeles (lol). Since it's book one, I am now anxiously awaiting book two and wondering how the story and its characters will progress in this juggernaut of a plot. Well done, Mr. Forsyth.
I have been a huge fan disaster fiction since I read Lucifers Hammer as a teen. Sedulity ranks right up there. While the story is not as big in scope due to its setting, but the authors seemed to get every thing right. I liked the characters (even unlikable ones) and the science is totally there. The authors have obviously figured out that great scifi requires good science.
if you love apocalypse stories this is for you! David Forsyth brings out best of people faced with tremendous adversity. Climb up a thousand foot wave, stear through storms and tsunami waves...Our Capacity to put others first and work as a team, saves lives. Maybe even your! This book, this author is a must read. You'll never regret it.
David Forsyth has done it again. He has created a new world that follows the passengers and crew of a cruise ship after an asteroid strike causes the destruction of the world as we know it. Sedulity is the first volume in this series and it is off to a great start. The characters are varied and interesting. I look forward to the next book in this saga.
This book was like a good bowl of ice cream! Delicious! It's a fast read. It has a ring of reality in that it is something that could occur. I am looking forward to Book 2. I hope the obnoxious Texan gets his ass handed to him.
Excellent research and attention to detail which lends to plausibility. I prefer character driven novels, however, for readers drawn to action, after the first chapter and a half Sedulity delivers non-stop action and the Forsyth has well honed writing skills
We all hear about those big asteroids that barely miss smacking into the earth. Sedulity is the story of what happens to a cruise ship, named Sedulity and to the earth in general when one of those bad boys smacks the earth in the middle of the ocean. And it's a great story.
At first, you think the earth got lucky because the impact occurs out at sea. But turns out, that wasn't such a good thing. Now, I'm not convinced that such an impact would actually unleash the amount of chaos and destruction described in this book, but then again, I'm not a scientist. Sedulity is definitely an entertaining read, with a great group of characters. I could totally see this happening on a cruise ship.
The only reason I gave 4 stars instead of 5 is that the formatting is a bit amateurish and the side story narration, a bit awkward. Aside from that, it's a great book.
Kevin Summers is on a cruise with his family in the central Pacific when an asteroid strikes the ocean floor. Being a meteorologist by trade and working on his Ph.D. in climatology, Kevin recognizes the immediate impact the asteroid strike will have on the ship and the surrounding areas. Destruction and death reign throughout the entire Pacific Rim. Will the cruise ship SS Sedulity, its crew and passengers survive?
Forsyth’s first novel in the Sedulity Saga, Impact focuses on several different perspectives from that of a bartender to that of a wealthy oilman. Each handles the disaster in their own way based on their lot in life. The captain draws strength and direction based on Kevin’s knowledge.
Unlike other end of the world novels, this one has nothing to do with prepping and only offers the microcosm of a cruise ship.
The possibility of an asteroid, big enough to cause an apocalyptic event, is probably the least thought about by most people. Mr. Forsyth has given us a story that makes it all too plausible and very frightening. The description he gives, from the asteroid first striking the Pacific ocean until the first effects are felt aboard the cruise liner, makes you feel like one of the characters in the story. I literally exhaled aloud when the ship made it over the waves. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and am now going to read the second book in the series! Highly recommend this book!
The definition of sedulity is "persevering determination, diligence" and the characters and ship were examples of this trait. The writing style was smooth with not many errors. I liked that most of the action was encapsulated on the ship "Sedulity" as the near observers of the asteroid impact and the detailed devastation which they fought to survive. The book also had an account before each chapter as to the effect over time of the impact as well as news reports that were available on the ship so we got a world view of what was happening elsewhere. I liked the main characters who all rose to the occasion and I look forward to continuing the story.
This was a 3.5 for me. Being a geology nerd, I enjoyed all of the details of the asteroid's impact and its wide-ranging, global consequences. The impact zone was in the area of nuclear testing in the Pacific decades ago which I found concerning, but it wasn't addressed in this first book. The author took some not-so-subtle digs at former President Obama which made me wonder what he would say now if the POTUS in the story was former President Trump, under the same circumstances. The POTUS wasn't named "Obama" but he was black, played golf and his home state was Hawaii. As I said, not too subtle.
This book was certainly an experience. I do not intend to read the rest of the series, as I do not give a fuck.
There were more issues than I care to name. Long rambling sections, infodumps, no clear narrative structure, telling instead of showing, sexist and racist portrayals of characters, having a perfect protagonist, ethical issues with the handling of the disaster that are never criticized, out of touch information, clear political opinions the author held, etcetera.
It was a little bit researched though, which was nice.
The premise is good but the plot is predictable and the characters flat. Worse than all that though, the author seems to have decided about half way through the book that there would be a sequel and chose to stretch the initial disaster story out so as to leave room for later books. I had been looking forward to the survival story after the initial disaster but there is little of that. I will pass on later books because of my disappointment in the first.
It is scary but true that something like this could really happen!! It makes you think about what if... at any rate I look forward to reading more of your books! Thank you!
I enjoyed this book as well as the second book. Unfortunately, it’s been years and I don’t think he is going to finish the series. So, unless you enjoy being left hanging I wouldn’t recommend starting this series.
I'm not much for the ocean or boats, but this was a good book. A little to technical in places, but overall satisfying. Be interested in the next chapter...😉
