Deputy Laney Briggs #1

Pretty Reckless

Rate this book
Welcome to Pistol Rock, Texas where everyone knows secrets last about as long as the sporadic west Texas rain showers.

Laney Briggs has long been considered reckless by the denizens of her hometown, but she’s finally turned it all around—she’s happily engaged to the local veterinarian and she’s become a Pistol Rock deputy sheriff. Everything’s fine and dandy—until a dead body turns up and her ex, Texas Ranger Gunner Wilson, decides to stick his boots into the town’s first murder case.   Of course, the troublesome cowboy’s rugged good looks and T-shirt-straining muscles are already leaving Laney knee-deep in hot water, but she’ll be damned if she lets Gunner trample all over her turf. She’s decided that, instead of conflict, she wants a contented, steady life with her vet—a life in which Gunner Wilson and his seemingly endless ability to undermine her resolve and her libido plays no part. Still, it’s hard to keep her head as forbidden sparks ignite and suspicions arise between old rivals and old flames. And when the bodies start to pile up, Laney has to ask the lethal bad boy for a hand—and a truce in exchange for his help. But after uncovering the pack of lies surrounding not only her job but her heart…  Having an ex-boyfriend as an ally might not be the best idea, but it’s certainly the most reckless, and Laney has always been pretty reckless…

So much fun! This book is packed with mystery, suspense, intrigue, hot cowboys, and a feisty heroine who happens to be a deputy . . . did I mention it's really funny too? What's not to love about that? I seriously enjoyed this book and I couldn't put it down until I finished it. I'd definitely recommend it.

The occupants of Pistol Rock sure do have secrets! The colorful residents of this town really make the place come alive. And, seeing it through the eyes of Laney and her sharp-wit, was hilarious. I can't tell you how many times I was said, "oh my goodness," and had to laugh out loud. Aside form the strong-willed and funny heroine, the storyline pulled me in and took me for a wild ride. There were some dark twists and turns I definitely hadn't expected which kept me on the edge of my chair.

As for the bad boy Texas Ranger - swoon. I'm pretty sure I fell in love with Gunner. :)

Jodi Linton debuts with deputy sheriff Laney Briggs in her mystery Pretty Reckless.
In Laney, Linton has created a heroine who isn't afraid of being toughly feminine in a world of men.
You know Laney is something different when you read this description of who she is: I’d pieced my heart back together and salvaged what little dignity I had left by jumping back in the saddle with a man safer than a Katherine Heigl chick flick. Unfortunately for me, old wounds can be a bitch the same way straying cowboys can be heartbreakers.
Even though the book opens with a murder, it would be easy to believe Pretty Reckless would join the ranks of countless Texas mysteries with aw shucks investigators stumbling onto clues that miraculously lead to answers in the "who done it" tome. It would be easy to make that mistake because Linton has fun with her character descriptions and nails the small Texas town vernacular.
It would be easy, but it would be so wrong. Pretty Reckless is fun and funny, but it's also dark and gritty. Think Fargo set in small town Texas and you've got the feel of this book.
Linton takes risks in her debut, committing some cardinal sins in the romantic suspense genre. I won't say more about that, but I will say trust the author. She makes it work. Not only does she make it work, she makes her readers route for Laney Briggs and the multiple cowboys in her life: the best friend veteran turned drunk, the one night stand, the former love or the current mistake.
Pretty Reckless delivers across multiple genres. Linton has created a book lovers of mysteries, westerns and romantic suspense will enjoy.

I received an advanced reader copy of Pretty Reckless in exchange for an honest review of the work.

I was given an ARC by the author for a honest review.

How can you not love a story set in Texas with hot cowboys and a mystery thrown into the mix? If that's your favorite kind of story then you need to read this book.

Laney is a deputy in a small town and things get crazy when a dead body shows up. Then to make things worse the man who broke her heart returns as a Texas Range who is following a lead on drug runners, and she finds herself having to work with him.

Gunner wants her back, she's engaged, she tries to fight old feelings for Gunner, and nothing seems to go right for her.

That's all I'm gonna say because I don't want to give away to much. This book gets The Crazy Booksellers stamp of approval. Plus it's going to be a series and one that I can't wait to finish. Jodi Linton had made it into my authors to stalk and one day I hope to meet her and get her autograph.

This is an great start to what is going to be an awesome series with small town Texas Deputy, Laney Briggs, as it's star. Laney has several murders, and several hot cowboys, on her hands--including her just returned to town ex, Gunner, who broke her heart.

Gunner is seriously hot, but part of the fun of this story is watching Laney choose between the hot cowboys: Gunner the stoic Texas Ranger, Nathan the sensitive and reliable veterinarian, and Luke the small town heir with his own ranch. It is an enviable position indeed! Add in wicked sharp dialogue, and astutely drawn secondary characters with just the right amount of dysfunction, and you have a serious winner.

Loved it, high recommend if you love your romance mixed with sass, mystery, weighty internal conflict, and genuine Texas cowboys.

I had a smile on my face as wide as the Rio Grande as I read this fiery little page turner by newcomer Jodi Linton. The heroine, Laney Briggs, is my kind of country girl; she's wild yet stubborn to a fault and never too proud to get her pretty hands dirty. When her hunky cheating ex, Gunner Wilson, comes back to town, she'd like to give him a good slap if only she could stop salivating. There's murder and mystery too, but all of the tight Wranglers and rippled cowboy muscles made the crime feel like a secondary concern.

I really enjoyed Ms. Linton's colorful writing. The descriptions made me giggle throughout the book. It was a fun read. I'm looking forward to Laney's next adventure.

After chapter one you get mystery, three cowboys and a bad ass woman and you'll be hooked! Be prepared to set aside three hours because you are going to want to read this book from start to finish! The intrigue and the characters bring you into this story! It's funny, romantic and suspenseful! Such a good read that you will sit by, probably impatiently like myself, waiting for the next story with Laney....

I loved this book! It was such a great read. I laughed out loud several times. To me, that is the sign of a great book. I enjoyed the chemistry between the characters. The heroine tries really hard to ignore it, but there are certain things that will not go away. I'm looking forward to more from this talented author!

Pretty Reckless by Jodi Linton is the first book in her new Deputy Laney Briggs series. We meet our heroine, Deputy Sheriff Laney Briggs immediately, as her boss Sherriff Dobbs sends her to a ranch to settle a dispute. Laney is tired of always being the one to get in the middle of ranchers constant and drunken fights; not to mention the leers and comments from the ranchers. But Laney holds her own, as she is not your simple female deputy. She is feisty, beautiful, funny, sarcastic and probably their best cop in Pistol Rock, Texas. This time the simple dispute turns deadly, with murder, mayhem, drugs making this a case that brings in the Texas Rangers.

In this case, Gunner Wilson, Laney’s ex, who left her a few years before, comes to Pistol Rock to help with the case. As soon as she sees Gunner, Laney can feel the immediate sparks, and knows she still has feelings for him, which she desperately tries to fight off. Laney is now engaged to Nathan, the popular local veterinarian. But it will not be easy, as Gunner is out to win back Laney, even if she shot him in the ass, when he left.  Not only is Gunner a hunk, but it seems so is the local wealthy rancher Luke. Laney is not deprived of attention from Gunner, Luke and Nathan, who is becoming by day more upset with Gunner’s constant advances to his fiancée.

This is just part of the story, with the romance, Gunner and Laney; but the crux of the story is the mystery of who is behind the murder (s), and involved in the drug deals. There are quite a few twists along the way, and each time Laney and Gunner think they have a handle on things, they are back to square one. Pretty Reckless is a suspense mystery, with a lot of humor, as well as romance in between.

Laney is a pretty cool character, and Gunner is one hot Texas Ranger. There were times when it was a bit wild early on, with Laney having to do most of the investigation work with Gunner. This I thought wasn’t totally believable, since the sheriff and the other deputy did nothing.
Overall this was a nice fast read, with a hot couple, not to mention a heroine who can handle all those hot men. Good start to a new series.

This novel is well written with an easy flow. I love Linton’s voice. She writes in a fun, light style that invites you to participate in the story. There were times that I couldn’t tear myself away from this story. It was like coming up on a car crash. I knew something bad was going to happen but I couldn’t look away. This author had me completely hooked. There were some ‘I should have seen that coming’ moments, a few ‘holy cow’ moments, and a lot of laughs. Linton combines suspense and comedy with lots of spice to create an entertaining whole.

Linton really brought this story to life with her cast. They were absolutely priceless. Everyone was larger than life and really stood out. It was priceless. I did, however, find myself questioning how in the world the main character ever became a deputy sheriff. She didn’t strike me as the type, nor did she have the background, but she definitely made it work for her, most of the time.

Overall, this was an enjoyable read. I’ll definitely be reading more from this author in the future.

Please note that I received a complimentary copy of this work in exchange for an honest review.

Pretty Reckless is pretty amazing!

From page one, I was sucked into Laney’s world. And, folks, what a surprising world it is! Suspense, intrigue, romance… it all starts with cows turning up dead, but then, wait, there is a human body! This is only the first twist on a set of twists and turns that will take the reader into a thrilling journey.

I live in Central Texas and think the way Ms. Linton portrayed the Texan characters and the setting is flawless. The heroine, Laney Briggs, is in a class of her own! So many times they create strong heroines to match a strong hero, but in this case I feel they created Gunner to stand up to Laney. She’s smart, quick witted, sassy and very well rounded.

I've become a fan of Laney Briggs and can't wait for the next book in the series. Bravo, Ms. Linton!

Right from the start I really loved this book. ‘Pretty Reckless’ is a really exciting, funny, romantic, mysterious and sexy as hell. Since I love stories filled with romance, crime and mystery this book was exactly my kind of thing.
In ‘Pretty Reckless’ we follow Laney Briggs, a twenty six year old deputy sheriff. Laney has everything in her life on track. She has a nice job, a nice house and she is engaged to the local veterinarian. When Laney finds a dead body in her little town, her life takes a big spin. Suddenly Laney’s ex-boyfriend and Texas Ranger Gunner Wilson is back in town and his mission seems to be, making Laney’s life harder. Fortunately Laney is determent to doing her job in the best possible way. But Gunner Wilson is quiet the distraction. Gunner is thirty years old, a very handsome and sexy Texas Ranger and he is not easy to ignore. And unfortunately for Laney (or not- LOL) Gunner knows it.

What I loved most about this book was the setting in Pistol Rock, Texas. I loved the little town, everybody knows everybody, mentality. And I always loved a good cowboy story. Being a big fan of country music I always had some music in my head while reading this book. I just really loved it.
The next amazing thing about this book was the chemistry between Laney and Gunner. It was just coming of the pages. Laney and Gunner have known each other for a long time, and they have a lot of history. And ever since the first page I was really rooting for them.

The cover was also a thing that pulled me in immediately. I mean, who doesn’t want to read this book with that cover?!?!

I’m thinking very hard about what I didn’t like about this book. But I really can’t think about anything. I loved the story, I loved the characters and I loved the setting. This book is definitely going on my favorite list and I really can’t wait on more books about Pistol Rock, Texas and their deputy sheriff.
I’m so honored that Jodi Linton gave me the opportunity to read this book. I’m definitely a huge fan and will definitely recommend this book to every reader who loves a good, funny, romantic and exciting story.

When I was asked to review this novel I just couldn't wait to dive in. The whole cowboy or western thing isn't usually my cup of tea but I decided to go outside of my reading comfort zone this time. And for good reason! Did you read that summary?!? Yeah ... you and I both know that you want to know more about Gunner Wilson. Sweet baby Jesus. I'm telling you ... you want to know more about Gunner Wilson.

This is the first novel that I've read by Jodi Linton and it probably won't be the last. It was really well written ... I didn't find any boring sections, nothing long winded or anything like that. I also really liked how established the story was ... you know those kinds ... there's no warming up period, just first paragraph and BOOM! already some action going on.

That being said ... I also felt a bit overwhelmed in the beginning. There were so many characters to learn and they all played a vital part in the story. I did find myself having a hard time at first keeping up with everyone. Now, that goes away once you're fully into the story but it was a bit much at first.

I've read ... hundreds of books. I don't even know how many. Tons. A crap ton. That's more than a ton, right? Well ... because of that, I can sometimes pick out the ending to novels and movies. Strike that. Not sometimes ... most of the time. And unfortunately, that was the case with Pretty Reckless. Oh, I hoped that I was wrong during the whole novel but in the end, I wasn't. But I will say this ... I may have known the outcome of the novel but the ride to get there was pretty awesome. I'll definitely read another one by Linton in the future and I'm kinda excited to see what happens in the next installment.

It isn't often that I read a " who done it" and not know who did it with in the first chapter. The rest of the book is just seeing how it was done. But with Jodi's book I didn't know squat till the last two chapter and even then she still surprised me . What a great , wonderful , sexy, funny, romantic book , Jodi has wrote! Gunner and Laney are prefect, and the cast and characters are the best. Each one has a richness about them , that you can see it all played out perfectly. Laney is a hoot and , she know how to use rock salt in the most butt slapping way ...( you will get that joke when you read the book I promise). I can't wait to read more and more about the hotter than hell Texas Ranger Gunner and the sassy deputy Laney Briggs. So go ahead and get your copy , sit back and enjoy the ride , you are going to love it and want to take it over and over again. Review:

What a great start to a new series!

Loved feisty Laney Briggs, she is smart, fun, dedicated and has a past that is going to catch up to her in the form of her ex, Gunner Wilson.

Everything and everyone are not who they seem in the small Texas town of Pistol Rock. Things start getting strange when they find dead cows and one dead person. The mystery, suspense, drug trafficking and action ratchet up from there. Laney does not know who to trust between the murders that are happening and drugs being peddled through the town. That includes Gunner, a Texas Ranger, who comes back to town to investigate the drug trafficking and to win Laney back, which not going to be easy with Laney engaged to another man.

I loved that Laney did not immediately fall back into Gunner's arms, she fought her feelings and insecurities and tried to protect her heart from the beating it took when Gunner was unfaithful and left. Gunner does not give up easily and keeps trying to chip away at the wall Laney has erected because of the past. Unfortunately, for Laney it seems her love life cannot get any easier with a finance, Nathan, Gunner and Luke as seeming to vie for her.

This story kept me on my toes trying to figure out who or whom was behind everything happening in town. Poor Laney seems to get the lights knocked out of her on more than one occasion because of her investigation.

The ending was great and rounded out the story nicely.

Cannot wait to see what happens with Laney and the citizens of Pistol Rock next!!

This book was a rip roaring good read I read in lickty split time. This is a great beginning of a series that after reading this one looks to be a very promising series. I so enjoy when the female lead is in law enforcement because they do make for tenacious in their investigations which holds any reader captivated when reading their escapades or dealings. This author introduces us to Laney who is a deputy in a small town that is quite colorful place you find out about while reading. After being called out to check out dead cows and ruckus between two neighbors it turns out to be even more dead than that. But oh who should also enter into the picture is the ex of Laney's one who can still rock her world I would say by how he effects her. You know what they say about ex's if you really do not get over them and life gives you that second chance? A chance you might not want pride to get in the way of when it happens. Laney is not the girl he left and not quite so single either. Gunner is also here to investigate a case that brings him to her neck of the woods. This opens the door to some hilarious action between the two and a mystery they both get involved in that needs to be solved. So love (have said this many times now) a good intriguing romance with lots of action and adventure. Sprinkle in the heat you end up with one knock your socks off read. The two main characters in here are so likable that each encounter they have is interesting to see how much the sparks fly. I found myself also rooting for Gunner as this story progressed that it did not matter to me she was already engaged. The drama is quite riveting comparable to any I have read before, with a great twist at the end. Quite a few snakes in here so they both might want to keep their guns handy. As this came to a end though it does leave me quite happy with it but wanting to read more from this author so I hope she does not take too long in bringing to life for us with the next novel of hers. We the reader can be quite greedy that way when the author has the talent as she does. Received a arc for a honest review.

Pretty Reckless is the first in author Jodi Linton’s Deputy Laney Briggs Series and really sets us up for what I think will be a great collection!

Sherriff’s Deputy Laney Briggs is used to the slow and somewhat boring country life in a small southern town. She’s been able to get past a pretty hurtful breakup and is adjusting to life as the fiancée of the town’s veterinarian. Life is pretty good. For Small Town, USA, that is. Things take a turn for the worse when there’s a dead body found up on one of the big local farms. Suddenly everything is turned upside-down. Not just because there’s clearly been a murder, but because her ex is now here working the case with her. He’s a Texas Ranger and is assigned to help on the case. A distraction she doesn’t need especially when this turns into a real humdinger case of who-done-it. The murder turns out to be the tip of the iceberg and Laney uncovers a huge case of debt, drugs and deceit. The likes she never thought she’d see in her small town. Add working alongside her sexy as sin ex and digging up all sorts of feelings she’d like to leave behind, and this may prove to be the hardest case of Laney’s life.

Whew, talk about a mystery that had me on the edge of my seat until the end! Laney sure had her hands full from the very beginning and with so many colorful townspeople and viable suspects; she had her work cut out for her. That poor gal was put through the ringer in this book but I loved that she never gave up…or even thought about quitting. One of my favorite parts of this book though was Jodi’s ability to write a small town that I truly felt a part of. The characters were described with such great detail that I loved some of them, hated others and laughed with many of them. I think this is a great start to the series and feel like we have a great foundation for the series to come.

Thank you , Jodi, for Pretty Reckless! I’m looking forward to what’s in store for Laney in the future.

Oh Gunner I was gunning for ya all the way in this book, "Gunner snorted. "Hell, Laney, you shot me in the a**." He scowled at Nathan. "I bet you're even sleeping in my old bed." I mean Laney and Gunner haven't seen each other in years and I find it funny how Laney is still attracted to the man, "for lack of a better option, I fell in line behind him, hating myself for gawking at his tight a** even though I could barely stand him." That's sexual frustration honey. And well Gunner he's still gung-hoing it for his Laney, "Gunner was having none of that. He grabbed my arms to keep me from reeling backward and pulled me into him. "Hey, Laney," he rumbled in that deep-as-midnight voice of his. "So how about we grab a bite to eat?" I mean Gunner that boy is sure somethin' to look at and doesn't the boy know it, "I watched his T-shirt hike up his stomach to reveal a portion of his ripped six pack and the dark curls that peaked out from the low-slung waistline of his jeans I hadn't realized were unsnapped and half unzipped. "like what you see?" he asked. When I gulped but didn't look up, he made a two-fingered motion from his fly to his face. "You're engaged," he reminded me. "Eyes, up here." I mean Laney, Gunner appreciates her endowments as well, "that's where I'm sorta headed." He gave me an appreciative once over that made me realize I'd slumped back in the chair as we talked, and his T-shirt was now riding high up my thighs and exposing the crotch of my almost non-existent panties. "But I can't think with you distracting me like this."

Who says small towns don’t have their share of big personalities? The little town of Pistol Rock is chock full of larger than life personalities, but none is bigger than Deputy Laney Briggs. With her smart mouth, sassy wit, and the ability to reduce any situation down to an outrageous idiom, metaphor or simile, Laney is one small town girl to be reckoned with!

This was a fun read that had a great mix of action, suspense, and romance, which was all wrapped up in a great big package of funny “Laneyism’s” that had me chuckling throughout the story. Whether Laney was facing down the barrel of a gun or her mother’s stare, she always seemed to have something to say that had me laughing out loud. With two sexy cowboys and the town vet all vying for Laney’s attention, it’s a wonder Laney could get any work done, let alone solve the case she found herself in the middle of. Throw in some real colorful small-town characters who are always stirring up trouble and a mystery with lots of twists and turns, and this was one fast-paced read that kept me turning the pages.

This was a great debut by Jodi Linton. It was very well written and proves to be the start of a great new series. Looking forward to spending more time with Laney and the people of Pistol Rock!

I’ve been reading romances for a long time and I can honestly say I have not come across one like Pretty Reckless before. I say this in a good way. The story line was fascinating and had me flipping my Kindle pages at top speed.

Deputy Laney is one funny, tough woman who guards her heart after having had it broken in the past by sexy Texas Ranger, Gunner. The chemistry between them is incredible. Throughout the book I kept wondering if they would or wouldn’t get together. Ms. Linton knows how to keep the heat and tension in a romance.

I loved the language of the story. Yes they speak English, but the little phrases (which I presume are unique to Texas) that I had never encountered before made it more interesting.

My one complaint fell on Laney. Yes, she was a tough law officer, but she let others get the best of her at times. Ms. Linton attempted to show how Laney’s thinking process flowed during these time, and it made sense, but it didn’t make me happy. Especially when— sorry, no spoilers. You’ll have to read the book for yourself to see if you agree.

I loved, loved, loved the brassy, sassy Deputy Laney Briggs in Jodi Linton's debut novel and I can't wait to read the next book in her series!
When the population of 200 in Pistol Rock keeps dropping along with the citizens, and Laney has to fight off the attentions of two former "friends" as well as keep her fiance unruffled AND solve the murders that keep piling up, you just know that trouble and hijinks will ensue...and maybe a little heartbreak as well.
What could possibly go wrong when the town drunk, the Federal Marshall hottie, the rich entitled rancher's son and the new vet all vie for Laney's attention when she just wants to find out who's leaving bodies all over town? Enough that you'll laugh...you'll cry...you'll be mad as a wet hen...and you'll root for Laney to win out in the end.
Don't plan on putting this down once you pick it up. Pretty Reckless is a rollicking good read!

In Pistol Rock, the cowboys are not only sizzling hot, they’re all packin’ attitude and hiding secrets to boot. Fortunately, Pistol Rock has Deputy Laney Briggs to take them down a peg or two.

Of course the cowboy with the hottest bod and baddest attitude is Laney’s ex, Texas Ranger Gunner Wilson. Laney wants nothing more than to boot him back out of town so she can settle down with the respectable town vet. Unfortunately, as long as dead bodies keep turning up left and right, she’s stuck with Gunner and her inconvenient leftover feelings for him.

If you like sassy, strong heroines with red boots and plenty of bad-ass attitude, Laney Briggs is your girl. This rollicking tale is full of small-town Texas flavor and feisty humor. I loved the oddball cast of characters and can’t wait for the next Pistol Rock story! Fun!

Cute, quirky read with a kick-ass, feisty heroine, sexy cowboys and a wild west setting.

I thought this was a good start to a new series which I understand will follow Laney Briggs, our heroine. Pretty Reckless takes places in Pistol Rock, Texas - LOL! Doesn't that name just scream wild west to you? Laney is a deputy in Pistol Rock. She's engaged to the town's veterinarian and her life seems to be "on track", until she discovers a dead body and Texas Ranger Gunner shows up to work the case with her. Unfortunately, Gunner is also her ex-fiance and things weren't exactly resolved between them.

Ghost Seer is adeptly written with funny dialogue and gripping suspense. I felt that the story dragged a bit in the middle but, looking at the other reviews, perhaps it was just me. I will definitely pick up the next entry in this series and I'm looking forward to seeing where Jodi takes this series from here.

Laney has been living in the town she grew up in as a deputy sheriff. Her life is good, she is engaged to a local veterinarian and she is moving on with her life.

Her ex (whom she caught in their bed with another woman) just happen to show up after she finds her first murder victim. All of a sudden Laney's life was upside down. She is fighting feelings for Gunner, investigating a web of lies, deceit, and drugs. She is trying to convince herself that her fiance is the right man for her all while someone is threatening her and trying to kill her.

There are 3 cowboys vying for Laney's attention and she just doesn't know where to go or who is involved.

The author keeps this book very suspenseful and wants you to turn the page. I had a hard time putting this book down and finished it in 2 nights after work. If you are looking for a good romance book with some suspense/mystery thrown in you have found it.

I was given a copy of this book for my honest review.

Can't wait for the next in the series! A wonderful blend of mystery, suspense and romance. Laney is quite a sassy cowgirl. She's dealing with her engagement and upcoming wedding, her day to day job and an old flame who decided to flare back up in her life at exactly the right time. She has to solve an important case in her hometown that comes a bit too close to home. She manages to maintain, however at times it gets kind of sketchy! Her wit and sarcasm are priceless, she's a true Texas pistol!

Y'all have to check this one out if you enjoy any crime drama, mystery, whodunnits or romance. This is a great book for guys to read too, as the romance is kept calm. It's there, granted; however it's never too much! There are lots of sassy "Laneyisms" so pay attention! All being said, Jodi's first book is a good one. I'm already ready for the next one, and just finished this one! Great job, Mrs. Linton!

Life in the small West Texas town of Pistol Rock is going pretty good for Laney Briggs. She's just been made a deputy sheriff and she's about to marry the town veterinarian. But then a local rancher's cattle drop dead, along with the ranch hand who tended to them. To Laney's dismay, the Texas Rangers are called in, bringing her cheating ex, Gunner Wilson, with them. Soon there'll be a showdown in Pistol Rock, and it won't just be between Laney and the murderer.

Pretty Reckless is a great read! Laney is pure Texas woman, y'all. She's smart, spirited and wears a mean pair of cowboy boots. As for the plot, it has more twists and turns than a prairie dog's den (sorry, I couldn't resist). And as a one-time Odessa, Texan, I felt the dialogue and the setting were dead on. Bring on another reckless adventure with Laney Briggs!

A must read.

Wow. This book has everything. Gorgeous guys, a wiseass female deputy, and a bunch of dead bodies. I felt as though I was transported into the middle of a small town in Texas and I honestly didn’t want to leave when it was over. Being a Bostonian without a hankering for cowboy stories, I doubted I would enjoy this story at first. Man, was I wrong. Jodi Linton has one of most colorful voices I’ve read in a long time. Her ability to twist Laney’s thoughts into a funny one-liners and to rip at her readers’ heart strings while making them laugh keeps the story moving at a fast pace. Leave a few hours open in your schedule to read this, because it’s hard to put down once you sit in the car next to Laney and join her for a crazy ride.

Received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

It's so rare these days to find a tough, capable female lead but Laney fits the bill! She's a character I'd actually want to be friends with. In this book, we learn a little about her past and how much she's lost. I would've used something worse than rock salt! I liked Gunner, but personally, I think he's got a lot to make up to her and I was curious about Luke. If you want to know how much I loved it, I snuck my Kindle into religious services to read it! I can't wait for the next one in the series!

“Maybe it was bad luck or part of the good Lord’s divine plan. At any rate, I was one of the unfortunate two hundred that called Pistol Rock, Texas home."

Laney Briggs world is turned upside down when a bunch of dead cows along with a dead body turns up on her watch. Things start getting messy when a bunch of dead bodies start showing up around town along with the dead threats towards Laney to leave the case. If that isn't enough her ex, Gunner Wilson is back in town who five years ago had broke her heart and left. With the case getting more twisted and a jealous-needy fiancé at her back, the last thing Laney needs is her resurfacing feelings for Gunner who makes no effort to hide his feelings for her and has no qualms reminding her about their past love and relationship.

Pretty Reckless is a joyful and fun read with a good plot and a twisted mystery. Though there is a romantic triangle in the book between Laney and her cowboys, Jodi Linton has done a good job in portraying it in a way that isn't annoying, much. But I still had fun reading this book and I really liked the ending. Looking forward to the next book in this series.

I received a gift copy of this book and I have to say it was a great read. This is the story of Laney and Gunner in my opinion. They are not the only characters in the book but they stand out the most. Laney and Gunner used to have a relationship until things happened that tore them apart. Laney has tried to move on with her life she has a new career e and has even gotten engaged to Nathan the local vet. Then in comes Gunner to work a case and things get heated between them again. Laney and Gunner are working a case regarding drug trafficking and the twists and turns will have you turning the pages as fast as you possibly can. If you are looking for a great suspenseful romance to read this is the book for you.

A 26 year old already on her second career. Five years earlier she worked as a kindergarten teacher( when did she have time to get an education herself.) when she shot a man with rocksalt. She got fired, because she committed a criminal act and went to work for the police! Really? This tough and independent young woman starts sweating and losing her head whenever a handsome man is near. Her boyfriend grabs her, almost hits her and rapes her, but she doesn’t leave. She spend the whole book telling Her ex boyfriend she can’t trust him again and then moves in with him. The other cops in the book are misogynistic , lazy and incompetent, but she accepts that as normal.Oh yeah, there is also crime. This one is not for me.
