:::: SPOILER-FREE REVIEW :::: 5+ STARS!!! ::::

OhMyGod. OhMyGod!!!!!!! This was OUTSTANDING!!!

Captivating. Powerful. Unique. Thought-provoking. Unforgettable. My heart was racing from the first word to the last. Mia Sheridan's flawless writing is something every reader should experience. Calder & Eden's love story captured my heart and this is, without a doubt, one of the best books I have ever read!!

There's a special feeling you get right before you start a book by an author you love. The anticipation makes your heart beat a little faster, you get butterflies in your belly, you smile to yourself, and excitedly dive into the first chapter. That's how I felt before starting this book and from the first few pages, I was utterly captivated and felt every word of the story. It grabbed a hold of my heart and didn't let go even for a moment. I think it's truly the sign of a gifted author when she can make you feel completely connected to the characters from the very beginning, even before you've gotten to really know them or their story.

We begin the book with a girl lost in the city, with nothing to her name but a few precious keepsakes from a life she was forced to leave behind. As we read more of her story, little snippets of her memories are inserted in. Heart wrenching glimpses of a powerful love that was torn away from her. But why was she here? Where was the boy she loved now? What had happened to them? .... This book is their story.

There is a place in modern day America with no electricity, no plumbing, and no modern conveniences. In this place, there is no room for dreams, no space for self-expression, and no tolerance for ambition.

In this place, there is a boy with the body of a God and the heart of a warrior. He is strong and faithful and serves his family honorably. But he dares to dream of more.

In this place, there is a girl with the face of an angel and a heart full of courage. To her family, she is the vision of obedient perfection. But she dares to want that which she has been told can never be hers.

Becoming Calder is the story of good versus evil, fear versus bravery, and the truth that the light of love has always found its way into even the darkest of places... From the beginning of time, to the end of the world.

In a secluded community isolated by choice from the rest of the world, Calder's people live a life without modern conveniences based on pure faith in their gods and true devotion to their leader. Selfish desires are seen as sinful and free choice is not even a consideration. But the teachings instilled in them from childhood make them live this life willingly and believe that what they're doing will lead them to paradise.

It was in this world that Calder, a lowly worker, first set eyes on Eden. Though they were both children when they first met, a strong connection grew between them, even just at a glance. But they were not destined for each other for she was promised to another. Their powerful leader claimed that it was foretold that he should marry her when she came of age so any feelings between them were strictly forbidden.

"I'd never have him. He'd never be mine -- not even his laughter."

But love is an emotion strong enough to overpower all others. As they got older, hidden meetings, stolen glances, secret kisses, and every single moment together grew into an unstoppable love that forced them to chose between the life they were told to live and the dream of a life together they so desperately craved.

"I had loved him for so long... Somehow… it feels worth the risk."

This is the story of two people whose love for each other was so strong that it gave them the power to fight for the life they wanted and the freedom to choose how to live it, to walk away from the teachings they'd grown up with and to find the courage to try build lives of their own even if their future was unknown.

"I'm going to take you away from here, to a place where my bed is your bed, and my home is your home. And in that place, I'll never be more than an arm's reach from you."

MY. HEART. WAS. POUNDING!!!!! With every new page, the emotional intensity grew until it felt like I couldn't breathe. Some lines would be laced with so much emotion that tears would fill my eyes and I'd have to stop for a moment to gain composure. I felt every word of this story with every part of my heart.

The world they lived in was so stifling it made me want to scream. And when I realized what was truly happening to them, it felt like I was watching a train wreck without being able to save them. There's more to the story I'm not telling you. I don't want to give it away too much but the last line of the blurb is a big hint and it added a dangerous edge to the already-overwhelming intensity of their forbidden love.

We started the story when they were kids and the way their connection in this part of their lives was described was incredibly beautiful but still naturally very innocent. But as they got older, their feelings grew into a powerful, passionate, all-consuming, undeniable, desperate love. When they finally came together, it was explosive!!! And as a result, I would absolutely call this an adult read. Guys, it is HOT!!!!

"I've wanted you for so long. So long. Every waking minute, in my dreams, too. I want to bury myself in you, drown in you, and never come up for air. I want you to be mine, and only mine... You trust me, right?"

I was completely swept away in the intensity of Calder and Eden's love for each other. So desperate for them to find a way to be together. I felt their emotions projected onto me as though they were my own.

Calder kissed me in a way that made me believe I had not only always been his, but I would be his forever. In this life or any other. In his kiss was the promise that wherever he and I existed, we would belong to each other.

At times, my heart ached too much to even keep reading. I loved them so much and I couldn't watch this happen to them. I was so scared for them. Worried. Angry. Terrified. Desperate for them to find a way out of this nightmare. I was practically shaking. It was almost TOO MUCH to bear. I'd have to stop and put the book away for a moment. Then desperately grab it again and read more. Freak out again. Close it. Grab it back and read more. I was scared to read the next page but too desperate for more to stop reading...

This book literally took over my life and my heart. It consumed me. Captivated me. I didn't just read the book, I lived this story through Calder and Eden's eyes. It owned me. AND I LOVED IT!!!!!

"My heart is yours. My life is yours. My body is yours…
You own each and every part of me."

When you read this book, please remember to be open-minded about their culture. You're not supposed to relate to it, you just need to understand where they are coming from. It's a totally different world than the one most of us live in. Respect it for what it is and accept that they're trying to find their own best balance between what feels right to them and what they want out of life. It's their journey. And it's a beautiful one.

"Promise me once we get out of here, we'll never say goodbye again."

Becoming Calder is the first book in a completed 2-book series. Both books will be released on the same day. I fully understand why they were separated because this book alone was a full length novel and every single word mattered. It's also has a beginning, middle, and end. And while it will leave you desperate to dive into the next book immediately, it also makes complete sense to have them as two separate books. I do however how so much respect for Mia Sheridan for choosing to release the two books together. To me, this is a sign of an author who is thinking of her readers and her story first by giving them a complete reading experience by allowing the emotions from the first book carry through to the second without delay.

Mia Sheridan is truly one of the most gifted authors I've ever read. Her unique stories, flawless writing, and the deep emotions she conveys through her words stay with you long after you finish the book.

Calder and Eden's love was so intense, so captivating, so passionate, so forbidden, and so powerful. The writing, the story, the emotions, the message, everything came together so beautifully. This was an unforgettable, captivating must-read!!! The only word to truly describe this book is EPIC .

Rating: 5+ STARS!!!! Contemporary Adult Romance.

The story continues in Finding Eden. Click to see review.

5 Stars!!!

After reading Archer’s Voice, I thought there was no way Mia Sheridan could top it. It was one of those books that was so good, I was worried the next, no matter how fabulous just wouldn't measure up. I was so wrong. Becoming Calder was so different than any of her other books, but equally good as Archer for me. Both books have made their way into my top 5 so far this year and that is a huge achievement! This story exudes originality. It’s a captivating, unique, and epic forbidden love story. I was beyond impressed with the writing, the characters and the overall story.

Calder is a boy who doesn’t live in the same America that we do. His world isn’t modern and he’s used to that. It’s all he’s ever known. He’s been told to never question the way he lives and he never really has. But one blonde haired girl that comes into his ‘town’ will change everything for him. She is young, even younger than Calder when she’s first brought to their place. But she is the girl that everyone believes the God’s have been waiting for. The girl that will help lead them to their piece of paradise. Elysium.

When Calder and Eden meet they feel this pull to one another. Even though they’re just children, they share this bond. As the years pass, they don’t get to have much communication. Calder’s family comes form the working class, and Eden is treated much differently. But they still stay connected.
“Hi, Morning Glory.”

“Hi, Butterscotch.”

description

Eden never signed up for this life. She was brought into it as a child. She understands her ‘place’ in the community, but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t feel things. Even though she doesn’t get to spend much time with Calder, watching him over the years, she falls more and more in love with him.
His smile… his smile lit up my world, even from afar. He was perfect. And I loved him. I loved him desperately.

As they grow from children to teenagers, their feelings continue to grow. They both know it’s something that can never happen, but the heart wants what the heart wants. It starts with butterscotches and morning glories, then it goes to a few smiles, a few lessons, some letters, and things just escalate from there. The little moments they have mean so much to each of them, and it gets them thinking... maybe, just maybe, there could be a life out there for the two of them.

description

Calder is torn. He knows he can’t be with Eden, but he also can’t imagine a life without her in it. His love for her is passionate, powerful and all consuming. And she feels exactly the same way. What they’re doing is dangerous. For the both of them. They both spend some time trying to fight their feelings, but you can’t fight your heart. What do you do when the one person you can’t be with is the only person in your life that you can’t be without?

description

Eden and Calder’s story took me through all kinds of emotions. My heart was happy, it was breaking, it was racing. I was all over the place while reading this one. There were such dramatic scenes- lets just say I couldn’t put this one down when I started reading. I started it and I finished it within a matter of hours. I did nothing else but read. It was one of those books that I devoured.

Both Calder and Eden had an extreme amount of strength. They were both beautiful people, inside and out. The risks they were willing to take and the love that they had for each other was just inspiring. Calder is one of those characters you can’t help but adore. The way he was with his sister, his best friend, and just the way he treated everyone in general had me falling for him from the start. Eden’s love for Calder was so beautiful, so pure. I loved watching them together but I was nervous for them at the same time. All I wanted was for them to be able to get away, to start somewhere where they could just BE.
“I’m going to take you away from here, to a place where my bed is your bed, and my home is your home. And in that place, I’ll never be more than an arm’s reach from you.”

There are so many books being released every day, I can imagine as an author it is extremely difficult to continually bring out original and unpredictable stories. But somehow, Mia Sheridan continuities to do it. There was so much I didn’t see coming, things were unexpected and surprising. And I have no clue what direction she’s going to take in the next book. That is a fantastic feeling for a reader.

Becoming Calder is a book that shows you really can’t help who you fall in love with. Who your heart wants and who you’re destined to be with is just that powerful. It’s one of the best forbidden love stories I’ve read. The two main characters are both extremely lovable. The more I read, the more I loved, but also the more nervous I was. I could just tell something BIG was going to happen when it was all said and done. And I was right. The ending left me desperate to find out what will happen next. I can’t wait to jump into Finding Eden and continue their story.

If you’re looking for an all consuming and unpredictable romance, pick this one up! It's one of the best books I’ve read this year!

The power of the need to mate, hard and vigorously, shocked me. I wanted her. I hadn't known this pull before today, but I knew it then. I wanted her desperately, but I pulled away, turning and attempting to cool my raging blood….

5 Morning Glory Stars.

Meet Acadia, an extremely religious community (okay, let’s cut the c*ap and call it a cult) that lives apart from society and under their very own strict beliefs and rules.
One day Eden arrives, nobody knows where she comes from, but their “Father” (aka leader of the cult) tells them that she is “The Chosen One”. And from that day one she is venerated and protect from her community until “The Day” arrives. She is basically their little golden Goddess.. Except that she has no freedom and has to do what the Father tells her is her destiny.
In that community lives Calder. He’s just a boy. They belong to different “social classes”. They were never meant to know each other. They were never meant to be friends. And they were especially, never meant to fall in love.
But they did.

description

They know they can’t ever be together, after all, Eden has her destiny to fulfill. He is just a boy. But love is an undeniable force and soon they will start to wonder if maybe there’s more for them on the outside world. Maybe there’s a chance for them.
How can they have to be apart when they can’t live without each other?
But the problem with the destiny? When you mess with it, you have to be prepared for the consequences.

Storyline: This was an amazing romance about two souls who can’t live without the other but they’re destined to be apart. This is a forbidden romance that show us how love can be an unstoppable force. I honestly thought that after Archer’s Voice, Mia Sheridan wouldn’t be able to deliver another amazing book like that. I believed that a master piece like that had to be a one-time thing. Well… I’m thrilled to say that I was entirely mistaken. She did it again!
Writing Style: First person. Dual POV. Romantic and engaging.
Character Development: I loved Calder. I loved how sweet, how honest and how pure of heart we has. It was impossible not to fall in love with his strength even when all his beliefs were crumbling around him. One of the most amazing heroes ever written. And I loved Eden as well. How pure, sweet and loyal she was and how she just wanted to follow her heart even when she knew she was destined to something else. And Xander? He was awesome!
Steam: Meh. Some heat.

5 Morning Glory Stars.

Morning Glory. As pretty as a flower, as strong as a weed.

My heart is full. Full of happiness, sadness, love, pain, and sorrow. Mia Sheridan completely outdid herself with Becoming Calder. From the first word to the last, I was completely captivated and once again, blown away by her incredible gift. This story is one that will stay with you long after you’ve finished.
If you want a very unique story with an incredible romance, you have to pick up Becoming Calder. I could not put this book down and cared about these characters as if they were my real life friends. I am definitely going to read more Mia Sheridan books and never take a sale for granted ever again!

Thank you for the recommending this book Tina!

4.5 stars!!

One quality I’m always on the lookout for in books is originality. And in a genre like NA contemporary where plots are rehashed and recycled, originality is harder and harder to find these days. But this one…this book oozed creativity and is truly a diamond of the first water. Add exquisite writing, charming main characters, and a captivating forbidden romance on top and it’s no wonder this book was a winner for me.

*****************************

The book begins with a heartbreaking prologue of a girl wandering through an unknown city with little possessions and nowhere to go. There are glimpses of her past in this chapter, leading the reader to wonder how she got to where she is today…and who and where the boy in her thoughts is at. With this little to go off of, the author dives into a flashback story.

Like the blurb suggests, there is a place in present-day where people faithfully follow their chosen leader, worship their gods, and live with no modern conveniences. It is this kind of community where Calder lives, and where he meets Eden when they were both children. As the years pass, their connection grows more strong and intense. Every single moment they were together was precious and cherished but both knew that a relationship was forbidden because Eden was betrothed to another.

description

But no matter how much they tried to fortify their hearts and condition their minds into not falling in love with each other, it still happened. To want someone that can never be yours and only to be temporarily satisfied with stolen kisses and hidden moments seemed to magnify their love and intensify the insatiable craving for one another. But with both of them trapped in a suffocating community where the leader’s teachings were law, they could only dare to dream of a different life, one where they were free to express their feelings and build a life together.

description

*****************************

This story was both tragic and hopeful. When I read romance books, I usually have a very keen sense of how things will end and what kind of ending is in store for the characters. But with this book, nothing is guaranteed or predictable. It’s the kind of story that has the emotional intensity to force you to realize every event, every action is unexpected and will make an impact. It will actually make you question whether or not love is enough to overcome obstacles and if these characters are strong enough to bear the consequences if it’s not.

So why not a full 5 stars then? Well to be honest, I don’t have any real complaints. Really, I don’t. You know the feeling where everything in a book is going your way and you’re enjoying the story but it just doesn’t hit all your 5 star buttons? This book was like that. For some inexplicable reason, it lacked the final ‘oomph’ factor and since my 5 stars are reserved for books that completely blow my mind and wow me, I’m rating this one 4.5 stars.

Becoming Calder is the first in a two book series. With this book ending in a very gripping and dramatic way, I can totally appreciate the fact that the author is releasing book 2 on the same day. Initially I had wished that this story could’ve been condensed into one, but it makes complete sense that there are two parts. In many ways, Becoming Calder is a reflection of Calder and Eden’s past and I presume that the follow up Finding Eden will be their story of fighting for their future.

WOW!!! BECOMING CALDER was memorizing.

I started this book without reading the blurb so I spent a little bit of time in the beginning trying to figure out what sub genre this book fell under- fantasy, dystopia, paranormal, etc. But rest assured it is not any of those genres and had I actually read the blurb I would have figured that out.

Awhile back I had read a book by Mia Sheridan and loved it so when I was given the opportunity to read this one I didn't hesitate. I'm thankful for that gut reaction because this book was amazing.

All throughout BECOMING CALDER we hear about an impending storm / flood and the implications of what will happen once it hits. Waiting for that disturbing storm made my heart race.

Becoming Calder is placed in a culture cut off from society by choice. Within this society a forbidden love smolders between Calder and Eden. Their love threatens to destroy the social structure and the greater good of their community. Their own personal desires are sacrificed to assure the destiny of others will be secure.

description

BUT WHAT IF??
What if -the forecast goes against their aspirations ... will their own personal desires take precedence over others?
What if -they decided to buck the system in favor of their own individual ambitions ... will society crumble and fade away or will life continue on?

Every once in awhile a book comes along that leaves you "wow-ed"! When I finished this book I sat there letting everything sink in. Becoming Calder is a unique circumstance that opens the eyes of the readers and shows them a foreign way of living.

{BR with Mel and Dee}

This was almost the first book by Mia Sheridan that I was going to give a low rating to. The first 40% of the story dragged for me, but once I got past that point, I was engrossed in this book!

Calder and Eden are both members of a cult called Acadia. They meet when he is ten and she is around eight. Eden is brought to Acadia by the cult leader, Hector. He proclaims that she is to be his intended bride on her eighteenth birthday. She will be by his side when they all are taken by a great flood and they are promised eternal happiness in the afterlife in Elysium.

The story is filled with so much angst and sadness. It is something I'm definitely not used to when reading a Mia Sheridan book, but I really got swept away by the love that was shared between Calder and Eden. They were so innocent and pure. When they start to become intimate it was so very romantic to me. I was worried during every stolen moment that they shared, that they would be caught by Hector or one of his evil disciples.

Calder and Eden will have no choice but to leave Acadia if they want to live out their happily ever after together. They get help from Calder's best friend, Xander, and someone else from outside the compound. I found some of the moments while they were out amongst society to be really cute. They were literally babes in the woods.

I did have a feeling of dread in my stomach because I knew that there was a second book and the Prologue gives us a preview as to where Eden is in present time. The last 20% is nail biting intense and there were moments I screamed and moments of gut wrenching sadness. I know that everyone seems to love "Finding Eden", so I am very hopeful that these two characters finally find peace and get their much deserved HEA.

What a heartbreakingly beautiful story. My heart ached for the world these beautifully constructed characters were placed in,
yet love, hope, and friendship prevailed.

This quote below says it all. The analogy of morning glory and its strength and resilience to endure the roughest conditions sums up this book's characters brilliantly.

description

This story ends with a doozy of a cliffhanger and though I don't like cliffhangers or sequels, in this case the story needed to be spit into two distinctive books. Don't worry about the cliffhanger. The author did it right by releasing both books together. Yet another reason why I love this author.

"It might be Elysium to all of you, but to me, it sounds like hell."

description

Mia Sheridan delivers a heart pounding read of true love amongst a religious cult in Arizona. The cult leader, Hector has all his followers praying to many gods, believing in a tale of a great flood approaching in which his Eden our main character is to be his bride upon her eighteenth birthday to save all the members both workers and counsel to an awaiting paradise called Elysium.

”Eden, you must always be obedient. You of all people. You have an entire family depending on you. The foretelling is the key to our salvation and you are at the center of it.”

This story is told in alternating povs of Eden and Calder. Calder lives with his family who are workers. The interest and attraction between these two is evident from early childhood but not over done like in some books I have read. Amongst a secret spring the two become friends and fall madly in love. Their love and exploration of one another was beautiful.

” You’re mine, Eden. You always have been, from the very first second I saw you.”

description

Calder is an obedient member of this society but when he starts to question Hector along with his best friend Xander who is in himself a fantastic character they form a plan with Eden to escape into our modern world.

Sadly, Hector is insane and believes his prophecies and does everything in his power to break Calder and Eden while securing his spot in his believed after life. I hate HECTOR!!

”What has been foretold cannot be unwritten or undone, not even by Satan.”

This story is truly an adventure that had me terrified, cringing and swooning over the forbidden love that Eden and Calder have in one another.

Thank the gods that the author released book two the same day as book one because it's a brutal cliffhanger and so I'm off to read Finding Eden.

Becoming Calder Amazon.com Amazon.co.uk
Finding Eden

Beautiful, UNIQUE and absolutely fascinating. The story of Becoming Calder is captivating from the opening chapter to the final page...

It's about forbidden love, friendship, faith and strength, the human heart standing against evil and believing that truth and love will find a way. Having the courage to question what is right and what is horribly wrong. It's about surviving.

When the story begins Calder is ten, and Eden a little younger…. The reader journeys with them as they both grow into 18 year old young adults on the cusp of self discovery about their feelings and beliefs. They begin to question everything they've ever believed to be true.... The prophesy of Hector is looming.

Being in the minds of these characters is fascinating....

Calder is just divine. He's strong, kind, brave, tender, ambitious. He has dreams and aspirations and an immense capacity to love. He's book hero gorgeous and lights up the page with his character.

Eden is beautiful, innocent, strong, naive, resistant. She's the best combination for a heroine, offering depth, personality and intrigue. She has only one enforced purpose in life but fate has other ideas. Her situation left my heart aching....

Xander is the voice of reason and sense. Calder's best friend and his salvation in the crazy.

Maya, Calder's sister…. Such an emotional part of the story. Her, “…extra chromosome was filled to bursting with love.”

Acadia is a place in America, 20 years in the making, it's Hector's twisted empire. I felt the air of discomfort surrounding him and was repulsed at the thought of all he intended. It shows the disparages between the classes... Those who get the easy options and those who have to work for every single thing. It shows the way people can be manipulated into thinking evil is a good thing, a sacrifice…. A path to a better life?

Becoming Calder is stunning in it's originality with layer upon layer of depth within the telling of the story. The characters show a charming innocence and self awareness whilst still satisfying the romantic in me and my addiction to passion and sensuality. Their growth into young adulthood is glorious.

I was completely pulled into their incomprehensible world, feeling their anguish, their frustration and their helplessness to the point I thought I was reading a Dystopian story...? Why is that? Well, it's all part of it's special originality, but rest assured; if New Adult is your first love you’ll absolutely adore this book; it’s beauty shines through and the quality of the writing is sublime. The angst level.... perfection.

I felt their passionate first kiss because their connection and story built and built.

In the darkest most incomprehensible of places love can find a way, fate can take its course. People can show incredible strength and that’s exactly what transpires in this exquisitely told forbidden romance.

There is still more to learn about Calder and Eden. I have questions in my head about how they came to be in Hectors care in the first place and I was left on a cliffs edge of anticipation over what will happen next? I'm hoping all will be revealed in the sequel Finding Eden

Becoming Calder is part one of two of a series that will be released simultaneously on 5th October 2014

5 BUTTERSCOTCH STARS! ★★★★★

"As long as we're both under the same moon, we'll always find a way to each other."

Is it possible to be left almost breathless after putting down a book? I really didn't think so until now that I've read Mia Sheridan's writing. What an absolutely phenomenal experience to be part of this beautiful world that Mia brings to the table with her flawless writing. How is it that I've not read any of her books sooner?! *smacks self*

Okay hopefully this will be a quick review as I need to jump into the next book ASAP!

*******

Becoming Calder is the first book in a 2-part series inspired by the astrological zodiac of Aquarius and depicts the forbidden love story of Calder and Eden.

Taking place in a present-day setting but far from the norms of today's modern society, we are introduced to the city of Acadia where we first meet a young Calder. In Acadia, people live without any modern conveniences. They are loyal to their ruler, Hector and they worship their Gods without question.

One day when Hector brought back a young girl named Eden and claimed her to be the sign from the Gods that will save the city from an imminent flood, he vowed to marry Eden once she is of age. It is during this announcement ceremony that Calder first laid eyes on Eden and they shared an immediate bond.

*******

I'm not even sure where to begin on writing how I feel about this book. All I know is that my feelings are all over the place right now. There is a certain elegance to Mia's writing and the story screams originality which made this read felt like taking a breath of fresh air. Her words had the power to bring out some poignant moments throughout the book and she has a gift in story-telling that captivates you.

"A morning glory is a beautiful flower, delicate-like. Blue, just like your eyes. But the thing about a morning glory? The thing about a morning glory is if you let it, it will totally take over your crops, because it's not just a flower. It's also a weed, totally invasive. Stronger than it looks."

The forbidden love aspect was painstakingly beautiful in this book and got me hooked from the start till the end. The secret meetings they shared, their intense love and longing for each other, the pure joy that exudes from them in each encounter after they struggled so hard to meetup; ALL of these emotions that both of them shared, I genuinely felt them too.

"I'm going to take it slow this time. We're going to burn every stroke, every touch, and every kiss into our skin so when we're back together, it will only then just be cooling. While we're apart, we'll still be keeping each other warm."

Mia Sheridan has brought their love story alive through these pages and it was almost like I felt this need to protect them like my own child. My heart pounds for this couple and with every step of their journey in fighting for their love, I was right there with them. I swear there were moments that my heart went from soaring with joy to suddenly being absolute heart-wrenched!

"If this is the last piece of heaven I get before I'm dragged down to hell, then I'll gladly take it."

*******

Overall, Becoming Calder is undoubtedly an amazing start to a unique compelling, powerful tale of two young souls who strongly fought for their forbidden love. Two people who dared to dream more and willing to take chances at their shot of freedom.

I cannot stress enough how much I LOVE the writing in this book. I swear my fingers had a damn good exercise highlighting half of my Kindle pages!

Okay I cannot wait to jump into Book 2, Finding Eden to continue rooting for this couple and make sure they get their deservedly HEA. I'm just really over-the-moon thankful that it's being released the same day as Becoming Calder. SO EXCUSE ME WHILE I CONTINUE TO SWIM IN THE AWESOMENESS OF MIA SHERIDAN'S WRITING NOW.

Over and out!

Becoming Calder had me captivated from the start. I love unique stories, and this story was just that. Beautifully written and compelling, this one will stay with me for a long time.

"As long as we're both under the same moon, we'll always find a way to each other."

Calder and Eden are members of a religious group. Living outside of society without modern day conveniences, they live according to the teaching of a self proclaimed prophet, Hector. According to Hector a great flood is coming, but he can lead them into paradise. He brings Eden to their community when she is 8, claiming that when she reaches 18, she will become his wife and help him lead their people to the Fields of Elysium.

description
“Eden, yeah, she was definitely a morning glory: as pretty as a flower, with the strength of a weed.”

Calder and Eden form a distant friendship through the years, even though they are considered a different class. As they age their feelings grow, and while Eden is very accepting of her crush on Calder, he tries to resist.

description

These two falling in love, *sigh*, it was such a beautiful, heart wrenching experience. With so many things against them, will they be able to find a way to be together?

“I'm going to take it slow this time. We're going to burn every stroke, every touch, and every kiss into our skin so when we're back together, it will only then just be cooling. While we're apart, we'll still be keeping each other warm.”

I know some struggle with books dealing with this type of society, personally, I thought it added something to the story. I loved that it was so different. Becoming Calder was an extraordinary story, not only about falling in love, but about strength and resilience. My heart was in my stomach throughout this journey and that last 15-20%, I was livid. I am so glad that the next book has been released!

* * * * * Spoiler Free
People who don't read Romance may not have an understanding of how big a category it is...they may do a knee jerk reaction to ... oh, you read that...and dismiss all of the work as trivial saying, "Those books could never be as important as the other works of fiction out there"...or "They are just a bunch of plot points to get to hot scenes or grunting alphas "...

I have been reading Romance now for more than a few years. The quality and variety is vast; but for the most part, all I have read has had crafting, intention and skill.

Mia Sheridan is an author who can hold her own and then some with any other author of any genre in my book.
Her ability to be consistently original in a way where it is almost impossible, astounds. She created a series based on the Love Signs and each one I have read has been a complete journey of discovery for the characters as well as this reader.

In Becoming Calder, Ms. Sheridan has taken elements of off the grid cults with a strong nod to child abduction stories and mixed them with a love story so encompassing, it will take your breath away.

She immerses us; indoctrinates through the eyes of Calder... a true believer from birth. He is goodness personified. A young boy who knows of no other life but on the grounds of Arcadia...he lives in a small two room cabin with his parents and sister; no electricity, running water, plumbing or modern conveniences...at least not for the workers. The council members, as well as the Father, had all the normal things you and I take for granted. It was justified by the Father explaining all were equal in the eyes of the Gods... and it was the gift of the workers to "know" their place and give their work to the council and him.

Calder is happy being productive, honoring his parents and loving his sister, Maya. She is special to him... so full of love... as a Downs Syndrome child... she is free with her heart. He is a smart, giving being and is devoted to his family...yet he does have a bit of rebel strength in him. His best friend, Xander, has it too... and together they break rules, like sneaking sugar cubes... and dream of the butterscotch candies from the main house. This willful streak takes Calder at 10 to rush and set himself in a spot so he can see the "special one" Father Hector has brought back. For she is to be the "Savior" and all have been waiting for her.

She is Eden; a petite, blond little girl dressed up in a lace bridal gown being lead down an aisle. As she reaches the main podium, her eyes look out and the two see each other... she sees a young strong face with a sweet smile and caring heart... he is struck by her beauty with quivering lips and look of concern.. They have connected... and he is overcome with the desire to make her feel safe and sure... to rush to her and hold her hand...

But they are not to be...for she is to marry the Father when she turns 18. It is destined... and he is a worker not a high level council family member.

These children grow... their attachment to each other grows from a distance until one day Eden risks everything and tries to play with the worker kids. She ventures out to their game and is shunned by one as he says she is not one of them... they are weeds and she is a flower.Calder steps forward; he says yes, she is a flower... but she is like the Morning Glory... beautiful as a flower but strong as a weed...This will be the turning point for them... because Calder has seen the true Eden... her strength, beauty and willingness to endure.

This book is more than a take off of Romeo and Juliet... lovers who should remain apart but don't... this encompasses, for me so much more. Yes, this was a beautiful heartbreaking love story.
There were moments which made me stop because my heart hurt and then was so full I couldn't breathe...There was beauty described and experienced here; to read what was put of the page was a gift. We follow their journey... their discovery of their need and love of one another... their strength to make this impossibility become a reality against all odds.

The development of this is believable... there is no rush... it is innocent, pure and profound. These two characters become people who grow together, share and discover their meaning of life and cling to the belief of goodness under such oppressing conditions.

There was another overwhelming part to this story; one of evil and manipulation. To see how it was explained; how it was cloaked in religion and purity was abhorrent to me. Unfortunately, I remember watching live the coverage of Jamestown from its first discovery to its horrifying end.

This book is partnered with Finding Eden. After sitting for over 5 hours and reading this straight through, I was fortunate to have the book ready to go. It did not disappoint in any way.

Please read these books...it is my sincere belief, this journey will have an impact on you personally. I know it did me.

5 UNIQUE STARS

This book was absolutely fantastic!! I immediately fell in love with the story! This is unlike from what I have read before! The story was so beautiful and unique!!!!First of all I would like to say that I felt like I was inside the story, it was so captivating.I was mesmerized by the writing, the forbidden love story and the characters!!What I loved most is that from the first moment you could feel the connection between the characters and also I liked that the romance was building slowly!!This book touched me in so many ways!It was simply amazing!!

The story begins in Arcadia, where people leave there different from us!Without running water and electricity .They have a leader Hector who brought Eden in their community who according to the prophecy will be his wife.Eden is still a child, so we can see how she grows.Calder is the son of a worker,he has accept his fate from a very early age and he has learned to leave like this and never doubt anything....

Until he meets Eden...Together they will start having second thoughts about their beliefs...

description

I loved watching them how they met in secret meetings, with stolen glances and morning glories and butterscotch candies.Like I said before you can feel the connection from the first moment they see each other.I loved so much Calder and Eden! They were both inoscent, sweet and funnyTheir love is so powerfull and emotional.

The whole set of circumstances of how these people live is differnt from how we leave. Some people may protest, but honestly for me it isn't something I haven't heard.I mean ok not exactly like Calder and Eden but there are people who leave in similar situations like them! The only big difference is that they leave in a place which there isn't anything modern.

I can't wait to read Finding Eden!!I'm so glad both books were released the same day so we don't have to wait!!If you are looking for something powerful and unique that will make you want for more this is exactly what you need!!!

Why oh why had it taken me so long to read this!

This was so unique and pulled me in straight away! The feels hit instantly, making me root for these two wholeheartedly. I need to read more of my unread old books sitting on my iPad because nothing compares to them!

Anything to do with cults and their evil ways makes me jump in with both feet, this was done with such an historical feel to it, I loved it!

Another bonus is that I have no waiting period before jumping onto the next book because that ending sucked!

An easy 5 ⭐️ rating!

Becoming Calder is the 1st book in a 2-book series and tells the story two people whose courage, goodness and love triumphs over evil.
“I had dreams as well. In that moment, right there and then, I admitted to myself that I longed for more for my life and maybe those dreams were beautiful too. Brave. I had always pushed that desire away, ashamed of it, thinking it sinful, selfish.
But maybe, just maybe, my own dreams weren’t as sinful as I’d always thought them to be…somehow.”
Mia Sheridan has written an extraordinary tale of conquering your fears despite the many obstacles that face you and how truth and goodness always find the light in your life.
“But of course, life never worked that way. You had to live every minute of the hard part in order to get to the good.”
This book begins with the two protagonists, Calder and Eden first meeting as children when she's brought to the religious community that he has lived since he can remember, as their leader's future wife.

Under the most pervasive and sinister circumstances, a bond of friendship and love blooms between these two engaging characters. Their love story takes place over several years as the two face the hardships and struggles that come with their finding happiness together. Their story touched me deeply....they have this innocence...and at the same time something so powerful, deep and consuming that is so poignant and so touching.

The characters development is very well done. They're memorable, they drive the story and transport you into their lives.

I found Calder and interesting character. He questions what he has believed in most of his life - what if there something else, something more.......
 photo 5120Eros20Liber20-20Google20Chrome_zps6iwyvqjz.jpg
Eden just pulled me in from the first moment she's introduced.........
In this place, there is a girl with the face of an angel and a heart full of courage. To her family, she is the vision of obedient perfection. But she dares to want that which she has been told can never be hers.
There's something magical and beautiful about her that draws you in.

Another character I liked, was Xander, Calder's best friend. They have an incredible bond and I am interested to finding out how their friendship develops in the next book.
 photo holdinghands_zpsh9d4tupa.jpg
The author's depiction of the community's daily life is filled with a sense of evil.....you can feel it ....the menace that permeates around the members who may question the cult leaders words is pretty scary and chilling.

This book ends in a huge cliff-hanger and Calder and Eden's story continues with Finding Eden, the next book.

A beautifully written and captivating story.

DNF at 25%

I know I know not ANOTHER DNF by Ami. But in my defense I hadnt read any reviews. So why did I pick this up? I blame Ada for suggesting it. Wooh!! Had I known it was about religious cults there would no way I would have willingly picked this up.

The love story between Calder and Eden was quite sweet friendship to young lovers. It was forbidden and sweet and Im predicting a bit angsty to follow. Sounds nice and sweet but the cult aspect threw me off to continue.

Thank you for the BR ladies. I know loads of you all are enjoying it

"3.5 spring stars"

Becoming Calder was beautiful story of hope, dreams, friendship and innocent young love. Mia Sheridan has a unique way of shaping up the characters we could relate to, cherishing their growing love and living every moment of this mesmerizing romance. The author never disappoints in the department of romance, one of the my favorite scene was when Calder and Eden made love for the first time under the full moon, by their hidden spring, surrounded by candlelight was so MAGICAL!!! I was so overwhelmed by their innocence and purity that I just didn’t want this spell to ever end.
“As long as we’re both under the same moon,
we’ll always find a way to each other.”
I love Eden and Calder so so much! You don’t get to see powerful heart gripping young romance, where they are drawn to each other against all the odds. Despite being forbidden they create their very own paradise, their hidden spring where they fell in love.
"I’ll always consider it to be the place
where my life began.”
Rating Clarification: "It's not you, it's me"
My rating doesn’t mean I didn’t enjoy this book , it’s just that it didn’t amaze me. Growing up watching Indian movies, this subject matter wasn’t something new to me. The religious cult, brainwashing the community, restricting them against modern way of living and forbidden love was something which has been told and retold in movies ages back. Worst kind of punishment were given to the young lovers who were caught and let me tell you it never ended well! So this story didn’t surprise me at all though the ending was way too intense it was not as bad as I expected it to be.

I had few issues with the plot-#1- #2- ok! Let’s say the cult leader Hector made everyone believe there was going to be a major flood killing everyone!

Overall I liked it but I didn’t love it as such, Archer’s voice still remains my favorite from this author and I’m definitely looking forward to read her future books because let’s face it nobody writes sweet YA/NA romance like Mia. Speaking of her books sorry to keep this review short but I’m dying to read Finding Eden to see how their story ends.

3 Powerful Stars

I don't know....I don't know...I liked this.

Mia Sheridan is an amazing storyteller and I really enjoy her books. Becoming Calder was a very interesting story and Eden and Calder were really sweet characters.

I think my only issue with this story is that I was pretty much pissed off the entire time, in a very uncomfortable way. While I get that a good story - which this absolutely was! - is supposed to make you feel and all that jazz, for me my anger and frustration in the face of such happenings virtually overtakes my enjoyment of the story.

description

I love reading books that make you sit on the edge of your seat and make you feel all angsty, but feeling angry to the point where I'm almost sick to my stomach for the duration is just not enjoyable for me.

I would definitely, absolutely recommend this book (as well as pretty much anything written by this author) to anyone who is looking for a powerful, well written YA-style novel. Like I said, the characters are well fleshed out and the romance here is a sweet one.

This review and rating simply reflect my personal reading experience, however, and I would not want to discourage anyone from reading this beautiful story.

Am I broken?

No, seriously. This is becoming a huge pattern. It goes something like this:

A new book is released (usually self-published).
Every review is 5 stars and even 6+++ stars. *eyeroll*
I fall for the hype and go and buy it.
I read it.
I sit there completely baffled, wondering if I've read the same book as everyone else.
I write a review and look like a huge cranky-ass.
I hit publish and hope that I don't piss someone off.

Let me rewind a bit. I downloaded this book and was about to start. Then I did a double-take at the cute guy on the cover. Were those nipples...and a SCARF? Why hadn't I noticed that before? WTH, people? I had to text JJ and tell her that I was going to rename the book Man Nipples and Pashminas (because I find myself amusing sometimes). So, I put the book away because I had to shake my snarky attitude and give this a fair chance. My friend Mandy loved this and we often have similar tastes in books, so I needed to shake it off. Once I started, the explanation for the image was given quite early, but I still wasn't buying it.

Enough about the cover.

The first 40% of the book was a bit slow. It wasn't completely boring, it just wasn't drawing me in to stay with it. It was okay. I didn't really love the overall plot that was driven by a religious cult, but it didn't turn me off completely either. I guess I was just waiting for this amazing writing that I kept hearing about. The thing is, Mia Sheridan is not a bad writer at all. I just think she falls into the trap that a lot of New Adult writers fall into and that is...excessive cheese. Let me give an example:

As long as we're both under the same moon, we'll always find each other.

I thought I was reading An American Tail for a second there.

And what about the fact that "morning glory" is used 57 times in the book, most often as a term of endearment? 57 TIMES!!!

Eden, Eden, oh Eden, my love, my morning glory.

What's the matter with me that I don't think this is swoony? Women all over Goodreads are passing out from the these romantic moments and I'm thinking, "Huh?" I don't butterflyingly love this kind of stuff. <---See what I did there? That's another one that I couldn't choke down. I mean, I read romance because I fall pretty hard for the romantic moments in books, but they also have to have some believability. Perhaps my husband has ruined things. I get a kiss and a "You're still hot." every once in a while but that's pretty much all as far as swoony dialogue. :) Let's blame Big B.

I was really close to giving this 3 stars because it did have moments that held my interest. I did think the main characters were sweet, even though they were 17 and 18. They did have some pretty hawt sexy times. But, but... I just can't. This just doesn't stand out to me as either an amazing story or amazing writing. The last part got pretty exciting but I feel a little disappointed that I have to buy another book to see how the story ends. Do I want to know? Yeah. Do I care enough to buy it? Nope. I may pick it up if it ever goes on sale and see what happens. Then again, I may not.

Dnf,

The writing is great, but the subject matter isn't my cuppa. The age of the characters, the creepy cult leader, *shudders*. I'm sure there is a sweet romance here if I could handle reading the other stuff to get there, but I just can't.

I'm glad the br was full so hopefully it will go unnoticed that I am a br quitter!! :)

This is Book 1 of 2, must be read in order!

What can I say, this is Mia Sheridan and she’s simply one of the best authors there is. Her stories are just full of beauty. They are complex and clever and they keep you hooked the entire time. This duet is no exception, it’s absolutely perfect. I can’t ever recommend her books enough. She’s the best, and Eden and Calder’s story will stay in your heart fore

Calder Raynes lives with his family at a 400 acre compound in Arizona called Acadia. The whole community is led by a cult leader named Hector Bias. He takes advantage of these people who are desperate to belong, and tells them lies about the end of the world, & the gods. There are the council members at Acadia who have all the riches & modern day luxuries, & then there are the workers who have nothing, and live in very poor conditions. Calder and his family are workers, and make many sacrifices as Hector's people.

 photo 79f266db-49cf-4229-a4b9-c9771d588ca3.jpg

When Calder is around 10 yrs. old a beautiful little girl named Eden is brought to live at Acadia. They are all told she is the blessed one. Hector will make her his bride when she's 18, & she will help lead them to the hereafter. She is like the princess of Acadia. Calder meets Eden as a child and their friendship grows through the years. Their friendship eventually turns into real feelings that neither know how to handle. Calder tries to remember Eden is off limits, and that he doesn't have to act on his attraction. Eden knows it's an impossible situation, but Calder was the most beautiful boy she'd ever seen. His beauty stole her breath. He was so kind and honorable, and her only friend. He gave her comfort, and made her feel special.

 photo 9c40422c-6e94-4973-8293-62ca37d682af.jpg

Even though they know nothing could ever happen between them, they can't fight the desire to be close to each other. They are helpless to stop their feelings from growing, & no longer have control over their hearts.

 photo 76382f5e-af5d-4736-ae7c-4208b3712ff9.jpg

As they fall deeply in love, they begin to question their leader. They long for freedom, and to choose their own destiny in life. They have been obedient & trusted Hector, but now they are questioning his ideas. They want a life together, and risk it all to make their dreams a reality.

 photo 5df88151-b227-48d9-9a84-ca9739ae1d5c.jpg

This poor couple has such a struggle throughout this book. Most of my GR friends loved this book. Although I loved this couple, it was just too much sad for one book for my tastes. I still thought the writing was fabulous & love this author, but the whole cult topic wasn't for me.

-To me, he looked like a god who had come straight down from Elysium.

-And his smile...his smile lit up my world, even from afar. He was perfect.

-He still made my heart beat out of my own chest and his beauty mesmerized me, but now the desire to know who he really was filled my thoughts.

-My heart soared. I'd know that voice anywhere. I'd know that voice in the midst of a thousand clanging symbols, or in the deep darkness of a never-ending cave. It moved inside me.

-I want you to be mine, and only mine.

-This was wrong. But if it was, then why did it feel like I would die without it? Why did Eden's touch suddenly feel necessary to my very existence?

-I feel your lips on me, Eden. When I close my eyes, when I'm awake. I taste you. You are my first breath, and my last.

 photo edb102b7-c0a9-4c73-94f0-00b50f75748b.jpg

-"Your mine, Eden. You always have been, from the very first second I saw you."

-Calder kissed me in a way that made me believe I had not only always been his, but I would be his forever.

-She was so beautiful, I felt something close to fear looking at her- like no matter what I did, no matter what I tried, I'd never get enough of her. I'd never resist her pull.

-She had every part of me. I was hers.

-I want you. I want all of you. And I want you to have all of me.

-"My heart is yours. My life is yours. My body is yours. My art, my dreams. You own each and every part of me."

-I trusted this man with everything in me. I trusted him with my body and my heart. I trusted him with my life. I felt precious, loved.

Wow. My feelings. My thoughts. This book was unlike anything I had ever read before. It was original and unforgettable and beautifully written. I cannot wait to read the next book.

I am a big fan of Mia Sheridan. I love the fact that her stories are ones you can't forget and that her characters are the same way. This book was just like that. I loved the story, although I though I might not at first. It took me a bit of time to get into and I thought this would be the first Mia Sheridan book I might have to step away from. The problem for me was the fact that this dealt with religion and that usually isn't my thing. But, I am so happy I kept going because it was an amazing story.

Acadia is a place where a religious community/cult reside. Calder has been living there his whole life. They are isolated from the "Big Community"(the rest of the world). They all work hard with very little to their name. All Calder has is his family and best friend Xander. The members of council, however, seem to have so much more. They have all the modern conveniences that the workers do not. Calder wants to be more than just a water bearer, he wants to be on council and learn more about the "Big Community.

'Calder kissed me in a way that made me believe I had not only always been his, but I would be his forever. In this life or any other. In his kiss was the promise that wherever he and I existed, we would belong to each other.'

One day, Hector--the leader--returns to Acadia because he has found his "Chosen One", just like the prophecy said he would. Hector brings in a little girl named Eden, who he plans to marry when she turns eighteen so she can lead them to "Elysium"/heaven. Calder, a boy himself, becomes interested in Eden, and Eden seems to feel the same way. They start a bit of a friendship but, Eden is forbidden so Calder stays away. Years go by, and they watch each other grow from children to young adults. The feelings of attraction grow, never diminishing with time. Soon, the inevitable happens, they bump into each other at a spring and continue to see each other there in secret. They eventually fall in love, but they are unsure of what do since Eden is betrothed to Hector. It seems all they can do is escape.

“I’m going to take you away from here, to a place where my bed is your bed, and my home is your home. And in that place, I’ll never be more than an arm’s reach from you.”

The story was told in alternating POV's. I loved that we get both because it was really beautiful to see them both fall in love with each other. They are each other's firsts, so my heart melted completely reading about them exploring one another. My heart felt for them and their situation. This is where I became completely captivated by the story. Hector suspects what is happening between them and becomes insane with trying to keep them apart. He will not allow anyone to disrupt the prophecy. I LOATHED Hector and his accomplice Clive. They were horrible. They were selfish and mean, which was a total contradiction to Hector's teachings.

"Calder, my heart is yours, as is my life, my body, my dreams. You own each and every part of me, in this lifetime and any other."

My feelings were everywhere while reading this book. The angst of wondering if Calder and Eden would make it almost killed me. I got angry, scared, teared up, smiled so big, and swooned. There was that innocent quality in the relationship between Calder and Eden that had me hooked. I loved them both dearly as I did the secondary characters Maya and Xander. The writing was stunning. This ended with a big cliffhanger, so I am really happy that the next book is out. I can't wait to start it. Overall, I loved this incredible and unique story. I definitely recommend you give this a try.
