Something Simple

Rate this book
Randi Gibson is turning 30, and she’s giving herself a present: two weeks at Cape Cod, with only her pet African Grey for company. It’s the perfect break from noisy neighbors, a demanding job, and constant reminders of her recent breakup.

But her “No-Hormone-Zone” mom, her flustered boss, and her party-girl best friend can’t bear to let her go. She’ll lose her marbles out there by herself, they warn. It’s dangerous, being alone. One by one, they show up to take care of her… and soon, Randi’s only sanctuary is the local convenience store, and the company of its handsome owner, his boisterous nephew, and a kind old man who advises Randi to follow her heart, no matter where it leads.

Romance is not my usual genre, but every now and then I like to take a flyer on something outside my comfort zone as a reader. This time, "Something Simple" was that flyer, and a winner at that!

Harried and on the verge of turning thirty, Miranda (Randi) wants nothing more for her birthday than to get away and spend some quality time with herself. The only problem is her problems don't seem to want to leave her alone. Complications follow her in the form of one stressful relation (both personal and professional) after another.

Of all the unexpected variables, the most welcome is Luke, the handsome and charming counterman at the local mom-and-pop shop. Randi and Luke develop a quick and lasting chemistry; he becomes a ready confidant and constant for her, a role he has no difficulty living up to. It's obvious they have a mutual attraction, even if they're hesitant to explore it because of Randi's temporary status in town.

Without spoiling anything, I really enjoyed this story. Carol's writing is as sharp and accessible as ever. The characters are recognizable and authentic. The narrative is shot through with attention to everyday details (my favorite was the flapping shopping cart wheel, something we're all surely familiar with). All in all, Something Simple was a total delight, and a great read for a lazy Sunday afternoon -- or any other time!

Very slow reading in the beginning. I kept reading as I was interested to see how things would end up. I was glad I did read on as I am now reading the second book. Will see how this one in before I go to the third.

Light and entertaining - just what I was looking for. Carol Davis made me laugh out loud, which doesn't happen often, and managed to be clever without appearing to try too hard. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

A fun refreshingly light romance with no cursing or gratuitous sex scenes. Loved this book and read it in one sitting.

I’m not much of a romance reader routinely, but I can enjoy a good story that includes some romance. I’ve never been disappointed by any of Carol’s books, including this one. Romance is one element here, but it’s not the whole story. It’s really more about Randi’s relationships with her well-meaning and overprotective family and friends, which we can all sympathize with to one degree or another. I thought her loner vacation was a great idea. I‘d love it.

This is a great short read with a nice variety of interesting characters. I liked all of them, except the crazy one, of course, and the little guy was extra special. But I LOVED the bird. He might be my favorite character. I‘m not sure what that says about me, but that’s okay. This story was a lot of fun.

Quick, easy chick lit. Favorite aspect: the African grey parrot. I love a good romance and I love parrots. This book had both!
