Drawn & Quarterly Showcase: Book One

Rate this book
D&Q publisher Chris Oliveros was so impressed by the work of these two young artists that he decided to commission each of them to write and draw original illustrated short stories for this new book.

Kevin Huizenga and Nicolas Robel represent some of the brightest new talents in comics today. This is the inaugural volume in an annual showcase of new talent, complimenting our annual flagship anthology. This is comics pushing all the boundaries; surreal, edgy stories of wonder that shimmer with visual style and emotional power. They are presented here in a deluxe package to introduce them to new fans of illustrated fiction.

Story: **
Huizenga does a "Glenn Ganges" story which is very boring other than the facts about the integration of the Starling to the States which interested me even though it's a tragic story for the ecosystem.

Robel did an over-surreal story about inner conflicts occuring within outer arguement. It's just as boring but added confusion to the recipe.

Art: **
Huizenga's work is thin and scant while Robel's is too sketchy and full of constant wraiths floating around everywhere which annoyed me.

Preferred the Kevin Huizenga part - by far.

Published in 2003, Drawn & Quarterly Showcase is the follow-up anthology series to the 3 oversized coffee-table books. This smaller book contains just two stories by Kevin Huizenga and Nicholas Robel.

I'm a huge Huizenga fan, but this story has been published numerous times. Most recently in his magnum opus Ganges: The River at Night.

Robel's story has nice art with beautiful pink tones.

A great little collect of work, if you come across a copy pick it up. Both artist create work that is filled with promise. Kevin Huizenga has gone on to create some great comics and now I'm eagerly looking into more work by Nicolas Robel.
