Billionaire playboy Robert Chatham is as bloodthirsty as it gets. Snarky and self-obsessed, he has a new girl every day of the week. What the London tabloids don’t know is the reason Robb acts like a lady-killer: to avoid having to kill them. A four-hundred year old vampire, he feeds and moves on, never getting attached to any girl.
Until Liz.
A shy American transplant in the heart of London, Liz is slaving away on her grad school project: working to find a cure for the blood cancer that her younger sister died from years ago. Dead focused on her studies, she’s more interested in the chemistry of hemoglobin than in the chemistry between her and any guy.
Until Robb.
After an old vampire friend comes asking for a favor, Robb has to choose between repaying a life debt and chasing after the one girl who’s broken through his emotional walls. And when Liz stumbles upon evidence that seems to solve the puzzle of his mysterious seclusion, she confronts him in his lab. Only the dark secret she thought she had uncovered turns out to be something even more terrifying.
With a dead body in the trunk of his Porsche and a vial of cancerous blood in the pocket of her lab coat, Robb and Liz are heading for a collision course that will change both of their lives forever…
Aubrey Rose lives in sunny San Diego, where she likes to lay around in a hammock reading her favorite romances. When she’s not writing steamy stories, she can be found dancing naked in front of the mirror to Abba while her cat watches disdainfully.
Why I Picked It Up Heartbitten sounded like a promising novel based on the synopsis, so I couldn’t wait to read it!
Plot
Heartbitten tells the story of vampire Robb and human Liz. Robb was turned almost 400 years ago, and has been searching for a cure to vampirism in a college lab. Liz is one of the new graduates working in that lab, trying to find the cure to blood cancer, which took her sister’s life many years ago. The tension between the two is thick, but Robb can’t risk her finding out about what he is.
Unfortunately, Heartbitten did not live up to my expectations. The plot, in my opinion, was strange. When we started getting to what I thought was the climax of the story, with an enermy and the promise of possible danger, the novel ended without actually climaxing. It was then that I realized that that was not the actual climax. In reality, the whole plot was built around the romance. That would be fine, but it didn’t feel as if there was a plot within the romance. I mean sure, you have her find out and freak out, but that’s not really climax material. It really disappointed me that there wasn’t a viable plot in this novel.
Leading Lady
“‘Last time was…I misunderstood. I thought you knew. I’m so sorry.’ ‘It’s okay.’ ‘It’s not!’ Robb cried out, his voice strained. Then, more quietly: ‘It’s not.’ His eyes shone, and Liz was shocked to see tears bead and trickle down his cheeks. ‘I hurt you.’ ‘I forgive you.’” Liz was out female protagonist. I don’t really have any opinions on Liz, because I couldn’t really connect with her character. She was a graduate researching in a chem. Lab, felt an attraction to the lab coordinator, finds out he’s a vampire, and freaks out. Over the course of that, I didn’t really form any solid opinions on her character. She was a pushover to say the least, which is another thing that turned me off with her character. And she babbled a lot. She wasn’t bad, but she wasn’t necessarily interesting.
Leading Male
Robb, on the other hand, I did form a few opinions about. I don’t really think that I enjoyed his character either. I didn’t enjoy reading about him, but I’m not positive as to why. He was a bit demanding, but then he could flip a switch and be almost-crying emotional. It was a little to abrupt for me, and it just seemed unnatural.
Romance
“‘I don’t even know why I came here tonight,’ Liz said. ‘I mean, I know why I came here. I like you. I mean— ‘You like me?’ Robb asked. ‘Even though I shouldn’t. But you’re so cute. Not cute. More hot than cute.’ Uh no. She shouldn’t have said that. ‘But you’re my boss. Oh, jeez.’ ‘You like me.’ Liz looked up. Robb gave her a small smile. His hands were pressed against the bookshelves on either side of her body, and although she’s shrunk back against them, the newfound warmth in his smile made her feel a bit more comfortable. ‘I guess,’ she said. ‘Sure. That’s why I came here.’ ‘Because you like me.’ Here was another glint in his eyes, a gleaming of fear, and then it was gone. ‘Should I go?’ Liz asked, then answered herself. ‘I should go, shouldn’t I?’ ‘I think that you should do whatever it is that you want to do.’” This novel falls into the category of insta-love, which is an automatic turn off for me unless it is REALLY well done. And this one, unfortunately, was not. We got the ‘I love yous’ after about a week, the intimacy after a few days, and I just couldn’t see a connection between the two characters. It came off as plastic, as fake. I couldn’t enjoy it, which isn’t good because the whole novel revolved around it.
Conclusion
Unfortunately, this novel was just not for me. I found it lacking in character development and relatability, lacking an engaging plot, and just overall, lacking. This novel wasn’t for me, and I, unfortunately, would not recommend it if you want an engaging read.
Length: 2151 kindle Style: New Adult Paranormal Romance Story: FAIRLY GOOD Intimacy level: Enjoyment: FAIRLY GOOD Series: N/A Price: $3.99
The Good
The concept of this story was good. It has promise and could be amazing. Robb's character has so much going for him. Liz's character is the shy virginal type that you want to see get the guy.
The Bad
This story has so many good ingredients, but the final product, not good, something is missing. Robb and Liz's chemistry, it felt like there was no intensity. The moment Robb met Liz, I wanted to feel it. I thought his attraction would be instant and intensify as I assume she may remind him of Eliza the first time their eyes met. I wanted more from them both. Robb reminds me of batman in a weird way which isn't a bad thing, so I was looking for that dark hero. There seems to be holes in the story as many things seems unanswered. My interest kept dwindling with each chapter, because I kept waiting for that kick that the story needed.
Overall
A good plot, that could be so much more. My enjoyment was very mild as I fell in love with the idea of this story and its characters. I think reworked with certain elements would bring this story to another level, not to say that the author didn't give this her best or to take away from the author's hard work.
*Was provided a copy of this book for an honest review.
This book had so much potential. A sweet scientist, a billionaire vampire, and set in the UK. It should have been off the charts steaming and hot. The problem-- it wasn't. It was just OK....tepid...lukewarm...and boring at times.
I love vampire stories...especially steamy ones because the whole supernatural thing automatically lends itself to hot romance. This book had solid writing, but just took a while to get going. There was a lot of set-up and back story to the book, and by the time anything interesting happened between Robert and Liz, it was past 50-percent into the story.
We needed more situations with Liz and Robert, and more action and interaction off the top. We had too many superfluous scenes with her roommate and other secondary characters that just made the story drag.
Some of the dialogue is quirky and fun, but you had to sift through some dull scenes to get the quick banter between the two main characters. I wanted more. Just OK.
I enjoyed this series but I was a bit bored with all the medical terminology. Working in the healthcare field, I was able to keep up so it wasn't like the book made me feel dumb just...bored.
I wish it would have elaborated more on the relationship between Liz and Robb but maybe there will be a sequel? Although, I couldn't find anything that really indicated there would be. Bummer because I would read the sequel in hopes of seeing what developers between these two and if Thad's wink was a signal of revenge?
I enjoyed the story line and wished for it to dig deeper into Liz and Robb's relationship. I did get a little bored with the medical terminology. I was disappointed at the ending, possible sequel? I would purchase sequel because I would like to see where these characters end up. It really didn't delve into how Robb became a vampire and it barely touched on them becoming a couple. As with all of Aubrey's books, it is a good read and I would recommend it.
I wanted to truly love this story, but for now it's somewhere between an "eh" and "I like it".
I'd say that I'd compare this novel to a beautifully wrapped okay present. The structure and writing of this novel is as beautiful as a neatly wrapped gift, but the contents of the story are like a subpar gift. I'd say my reaction was the same too. I see it and I get excited, but after digging in through it's contents I'm left slightly less satisfied. Let's start with the writing itself:
Writing Beautiful. The sentence structure and diction is nicely written for the most part and there are very little grammar mistakes. It's written in a dual POV (which I absolutely LOVE) however I wasn't completely satisfied. It's just a personal preference, but I'd like the plot structure to be chronological if it's not essential to jump around in time. Not that this particular story jumps around a lot and that the jumps are extremely large, but since it's dual POV there are some time slots that are repeated in order to get the other character's side of the story during that time. I think some of it could've been possibly better organized or just taken out, but it wasn't too bothersome.
Plot Love the idea and some of the execution. There's a beginning, middle, and sort of end (which I'll get into later). Things escalated a tiny bit more quickly than I would've liked, but this story has the basics of a fantastic story--it just needs more details and background behind it. I'd certainly love to know more about Robb's past . I'd also love some more background on why Liv came to the UK of al places for graduate school as well as an explanation of why she looks similar to Eliza . The plot we're given as of now (a little of Robb's past, why Liz became a hematologist, their budding relationship) is great, but there just needs to be more details added to bring out the full potential of this novel.
Characters Both Robb and Liz are likable for the most part. Robb doesn't give off as much of a billionaire playboy vibe as I thought he would. He did so in the beginning pretty well, but it was only for a few scenes. His lack of playboy tendencies later is understandable, but I feel like there wasn't enough of the playboy scenes to get that point across. Other than that, he's your typical sexy sweet guy who's suffering inside (whether that's good or bad is subjective). He makes mistakes, but he means well. As for Liz, she's innocent and somewhat shy but can stand up for herself if she needs to. She can get impulsive at times when it comes to Robb, which can sometimes get frustrating, but she's tolerable. I think her likability is either a you like her or you don't. You sympathize her with her past like you do with Robb so there's that contributing tidbit towards your feelings for her.
Romance/Erotica It's sweet, it's beautiful, but it's not exactly there. You have sweet beautiful words from Robb, their passionate kisses and other actions have true feelings behind it, and the erotic tension is palpable, but the question of "Why is it there?" comes up. It's pretty much you have the actions and feelings there, but no background behind it. I believe the timeline of the story is roughly a week if not a few weeks and there's not many scenes where the two get to truly know each other that the degree of their feelings is understandable. I still don't understand why Liz has the strong feelings she has for Robb. Is it really because of a vampires charms? Is there some deeper background we weren't introduced to yet? Is it because she falls hard and fast for a guy who catches her attention?
The Ending It was cute and sweet until I realized it was the actual ending. I thought it was the end of the chapter, but it was the actual ending so now I'm left with questions and not just a basic ending that has room for a sequel, but an ending that really isn't an ending at all. As I stated early, it was an ending that's more fitting for ending a chapter rather than ending a novel. That being said, I'm hoping that there will definitely be a sequel because as of now it looks like there isn't one.
Overall, the story was alright for me. My naggy comments probably contrast with my 3 star rating, but I wasn't lying when I said it was nicely written and a decent execution, it just didn't have enough content to put it up in the 5 star rating. Honestly, most, if not all, of my complaints can be easily remedied if the story was longer so I hope that if Ms. Rose does plan on making a sequel, it will be longer so the story has more room to breathe life into this budding romance and give us more time to get to know both characters and care for them at a deeper level.
I am not even finished with this book yet but I had to rate it. OH MY GOD... That is literally all I have to say about this book. Never have I read a book where it was so steamy and nothing even happened yet! Literally the first page will draw you in and you're hooked. All I really have to say is I wish I was Liz...
I'm not sure if there's a sequel planned for this - I looked and could find no indication of one - so I have to base my review on this book as a standalone. First, I love the premise and the character of Robb. He was very fleshed out and real and it was easy to fall in love with him. He was by no means perfect, and for once he wasn't just a billionaire arrogant jerk; he really cared about others and wanted love. Liz was fine a a heroine, but I didn't love her like I did Robb. I just couldn't connect enough to her. I guess I'm getting tired of reading about this new trend of heroines who don't know or care how to dress or are clumsy/don't care how they look...I mean not everyone has to be gorgeous but neither do they have to be the plain one (in their own eyes) or not feminine. Anyway that aside, I didn't buy into the almost insta-love - they didn't know each other well enough to be in love! That was my problem with a lot of the book. You don't get enough information. Robb is taken by vampires when he is 13 and centuries later he's an adult vampire. How was he turned? Who turned him and why? Was he really a prince? How did he age if he was turned at 13? Almost no details were given about what a BEING a vampire, though both the H and h go into long medical spiels about blood. At one point you get excited because Robb tells Liz he will explain his whole story, and the reader thinks finally an explanation for all the holes! Then it's like two sentences, with nothing new. And secondary characters - what reason was Thad even in the story? He served no purpose. I thought at least he would provide some background, but it was as if the author decided to write this great story - and really it could have been a 5-star book if it was fleshed out - but didn't create a vampire "world" or any backstory other than "oh he's a vampire, figure out how vampires exist on your own", because apparently they can be in sunlight, eat, age, not age, feed, maybe compel a bit (?) there was just NO world building and with so many vamp stories out there, how can you NOT build a basic "world" for your vamps when writing a new story? So that just felt really lazy, and was frustrating. Especially since the characters had so much potential! And the sex scenes - well intimate scenes anyway - were hot! Great chemistry. But then the characters don't act the way you think they would - no spoilers but there's again NO explanation or real reason for why they don't finish what they start, just like that's how she decided to write it for some reason even if it didn't make sense for the story...And then it just ends. Like the author hit a certain page count and was done, let's wrap it up, end of story. You almost expect a "to be continued" (which would have been irritating because even in a series each book should be complete but at least there would be hope for some answers about all of the above, and this could be considered semi-complete if it was a series). But it looks like she just has other books out there, also paranormal but werewolves, myths, etc. I personally won't bother reading any. I WOULD read a sequel to this but I don't want to be disappointed with another half-finished book, it really feels like something that could have been great but the author just didn't put enough into it. I guess that's the best description I can give, it feels like a half-hearted effort. Let me be clear that I believe this author is talented, the writing is very good with few errors, very descriptive, great concept (but maybe a bit of Twilight meets Fifty Shades, LOL), and I read the book in a day so it held my attention. I was just disappointed when it ended that the promise was never fleshed out. If she ever revises this, simply taking off where Liz confronts Robb and he promises to tell her everything, and using that to flesh it out AND expanding the ending would make this a 5-star book, in my opinion. Though maybe Robb shouldn't consider killing her one day then thinking he'd hang the moon for her the next...again keep the characters IN character. I can't NOT recommend this. But it's like craving your favorite fast food and getting home to find the order completely wrong - unfulfilled in a small way.
Title: Heartbitten Author: Aubrey Rose Rating: 3.5 - 4/5
Thanks to NetGallery and Fido Publishing for letting me receive a digital copy of this book.
Robb has lost a very important person in his early life - Eliza. He lost her because the vampires took him and made him become one too. Now, a hundred years later, he finds himself torn between giving love a new chance, having Liz in his life, who a virgin on top of it all, and the costs that come along by being a vampire.
Liz puts all of her focus on her work. She loves her job, and if Jenny wouldn't drag her, she'd never willingly go to a party. She's not much of a party person, let alone searching looking for a relationship. But then she meets Robb Chatham who is too goodlooking for his own good. Will she still lust after him when she finds out about his secret?
Please ignore the sypnoses, as always. I'm not good at writing them.
Do you know these moments when you browse through a book website and find one that captures your attention by the sypnosis so bad, you want to read it immediately? That's what happened to me when I found Heartbitten on NetGallery. I was browsing though the different sections of genres and found Heartbitten. There was part of a conversation between Liz and Robb and I fell in love. I wanted to have that book. You can imagine how happy I was, when I actually received it.
Usually, I prefer to read books written in first person. I can't seem to relate to third person that well. But forget it! Aubrey Rose's writing is too perfect to complain. She's one of my new favourite authors, a new rulemodel when it comes to writing.
I adored Liz and Robb's characters. Their feelings and intentions were described perfectly, leaving nothing to the imagination.
What I missed though was the story of Robb, how he became a vampire. We only know that they took him, but we don't know what happened then. Or is my English that bad and I didn't understand it, missed reading that scene? If so, I am very sorry. I was too excited about the romance between Liz and Robb. And oh God! That romance. I totally loved it.
My favourite scene... I know, no one's interested in reading about that, but I want to mention it anyway. I had lots of favourite scenes, but my very very favourite was when Liz thought she had discovered Robb's secret and it was a total misunderstanding, turning into a disaster. She was so supportive and all cute about convincing him it was all okay. She hadn't expected that. Love, love, love that scene!
Sometimes, it was hard for me to understand the biological and chemistry language in this book. But that's just because English isn't my mother-tongue. Oh, and I really don't know why this book is titled as New Adult. Robb clearly isn't a new adult and Liz... She may be a virgin, but she is acting like a real grown-up.
I don't want to give away too much. I really loved the book and I am glad to have found such a talented author through NetGallery. Thanks for that. I really hope for a sequel to Heartbitten, because I'd love to read more about those two lovebirds. A book about Jenny, or even Thad (though I really didn't like the guy) would be nice too. Just give me more, Aubrey. Do it, do it, do it! I'm begging you. Pleaseeeee!
A new book from Aubrey Rose and this time it's featuring vampires and not werewolves . Fans of her work will be quite surprised by this different approach to paranormal romance as this time the author takes a more scientific approach. Liz is an American studying in London and her chosen field is haematology as she lost her sister to cancer and now believes that the cure lies hidden within human blood. Liz has dedicated her life to this cause and doesn't even have time for dating but meeting Robb Chatham the rich benefactor of the college she's studying at changes her world irrevocably. As a student of chemistry there's no denying that what she feels when she looks at Robb is sexual chemistry at it's most potent but Robbs a man of many appetites and Liz has no intention of being just another notch on his bedpost! Robb has spent more than four hundred years hiding in plain sight because Robb is a vampire. Turned when still a teenager he never really had time to live but he did briefly find love. Now all these years later he has learned to control his vampire thirst and lives a comfortable enviable life but it's an empty one for Robb. All he really wants is to find a cure for vampirism and studying haemoglobin is bringing him closer to an answer. Meeting Liz seems like the answer to his prayers. She's smart, she's as obsessed with discovering the secrets of blood as he is and she's probably the most tempting female he's met in a very long time. Robb normally just uses women for sex and food but with Liz he wants a whole lot more. Robbs past is never truly dead and buried though and Thad a fellow vampire seeks his help in disappearing as he believes he is being hunted. Robbs an honourable man who wants to help but his connection with Liz is putting her in danger. Robb has kept his secret hidden a long time but unfortunately it's about to be discovered and it's by the one person he doesn't want to lose! The word undecided comes to mind when I think about this book. It's well written and a very different type of story but maybe that's why I'm not sure what I really thought. I usually read a vampire romance to escape reality and just wallow in complete fantasy and with this book I didn't feel that. It might be because of all the scientific and medical terms used as it made it feel almost too clinical at times. I understand the author was trying to reinforce the heroine Liz's work ethic and drive but I fear the terms might put some readers off. I really wanted to just immerse myself in a paranormal romance but unfortunately reality intruded a little too much. Yes blood is essential to life and obviously vampires but initially it just didn't pull me in. Although the two main characters are clearly attracted to each other I did find it quite hard to detect any real chemistry between them but when they do connect it's heart warming as they both clearly need love so much. So there's passion here and even a happy ending but I'm reasonably sure that there's more to come from Robb and Liz. The mystery of the hunters has not been addressed and Robbs past has not been completely laid to rest. Is vampire blood a possible cure for cancer ? Will Robb always be doomed to drink blood? There's so much more for the author to explore and if you enjoy a romance with a supernatural twist then Ms Rose is certainly a name to look for.
I received this book for review from the publisher through Net Galley
This book is described as New Adult, a class of book I am just learning about, even though I believe I have read other books that are classified as New Adult as well. In my opinion they are just edger YA novels with slightly older characters, more graphic sex and stronger swear words. I'm torn between a two and three star rating for this book, perhaps I will wait until the end of my review to make the finial decision.
Over all I liked the book, it was a sweet love story an easy read that took me less than a day to finish. I thought Robb an ass for much of the book, but womanizing powerful men often get away with that sort of thing. So it made sense that he falls for the one girl who calls him out on it. He isn't used to that sort of challenge. I liked Liz, stereotypes and all. The book was chop full of stereotypes actually and I saw several similarities in story-line to other popular book/series I have read. Not really rip offs, more like I saw their influence.
The beginning of the book reminded me of Discovery of Witches, scientists dealing with blood instead of genetics and a vampire who is trying to cure himself of his condition and the University in England setting. A little Twilight thrown in as well with the extreme clumsiness that seemed to plague Liz a little too much throughout the story. And even some Fifty Shades of Grey, which is even referenced in the story itself, in the billionaire playboy and his exotic tastes, or reference to them, in sex.
There was plenty in the story to make it its own though. I liked the beginning where we see the world where Robb came from, it would have been nice to read more about his past. It never really was explained how he was made a vampire or even the rules for vampires in this world. You kinda figure out that the sun isn't an issue, they can control their aging and they can eat food, but nothing else is delved into or explained.
There was only a couple of issues I found in the story that bothered me. Bears do not live wild in England and would a Porsche's trunk really be big enough to hold a dead body. On the second point I'm not a car person and couldn't find a definite answer while surfing on my Nook, so I dropped it. Also I could not find if this is supposed to be a series or stand alone. It left a lot hanging at the end which leads me to believe there will be future books featuring Robb and Liz. If it is a stand alone I would have like to see a longer book that goes into more detail and wrapped things up better.
If there are future books I might give them a try. I am also going to check out some other titles by this author. Like I said I did enjoy this book and I am going to give it three stars simply because of that. It kept me reading.
This was really disappointing. Heartbitten begins with a lot of promise and intrigue concerning vampires and how the main character, Robert Chatham (Robb), comes to be, but the reader is quickly overwhelmed with medical terminology and wool gathering thoughts of Robb and the heroine, Liza. Not speaking about the lovely, Aubrey Rose specifically here, but another author once told me that many authors can get very lazy when it comes to research on a book and is often evidenced by their driving compulsion to include EVERYTHING they find when doing research for their upcoming work (having spent time editing for several authors I could relate to this comment across several fields). I suspect this may have happened in Heartbitten and no one held up a stop sign to some of the vociferous scientific research efforts that were put forth by Rose and so EVERYTHING was included making for a distracting read.
I also found Heartbitten rather depressing. I didn't see any hint of a sequel or any sort of promise for better endings for Liz and Robb with Robb's gloomy thoughts of how Liz's human condition would take her out of his life eventually like all the others leave his life. I've read plenty of crazy novels where things go topsy turvy, but if there is zero hope in the end, then what's the friggin' point?! And essentially remaining a virgin didn't do anything for me either. This was no "break out" vampire romance. I think I'm going to go back to my Christine Feehan novels (the early ones) to restore my faith in vampires and sexy bloodsuckers.
Happy Reading!
Correction: Apparently, there is a sequel called Bloodstricken and based on the other reviews things are not looking much better, so I wish readers the best of luck with this series. It just wasn't for me.
I know the work that goes into writing a book so I feel bad rating this so low. I am a hopeless romantic and I love supernatural books so I read the synopsis (which i'm sure you have read before reading this) and it was right up my ally.
*I just realized why I don't like the story. It's like a romance novel where the guy and girl meet, are unsure, decide to get together and it ends there. It feels like the whole book is the first third of a romance book where we have been introduced to the characters but then it ends before anything much actually happens.*
400 years later here he is, a handsome London billionaire. When he meets Liz, he is instantly reminded of his childhood sweetheart but soon falls for her - instant love (the story takes place over less than a week). Now Liz sees him as arrogant, which he is, and tries to avoid him but as many vampires do, he has a way of convincing girls they are smitten with him.
Liz I didn't really connect with and I felt like she was so easily persuaded to agree with Robb.
Robb has emotional whip-lash - going from crying to asshole in a second. He has back story which really has nothing at all to do with the story itself.
Robb instantly loved Liz but she wasn't sold. There was a lot of medical terminology which made me wonder if the author was actually a med student? It went way over my head and a number of times I put the book down because I just wasn't invested in the story.
I am left with so many questions: * Why does Robb look 20/30 when he was turned at 13? * Why has nobody noticed that a prominent socialite has barely any family history? And that three generations of one man all look exactly the same? * Why can't Thad take care of himself? What is the favor Robb owed him for? * How did he meet the doctor and his butler? * What has he found/experimented on in his lab? * If the vampires can basically compel people into agreeing with them, surely Thad could talk his way overseas or out of the situation he is in?
It all ended really quickly and just left me wondering when the resolution was going to happen? I am going to assume there is a second book because it just kind of ended with everything still up in the air.
Yeah, like I said I know the work that goes into writing books and the writing itself is good but I think the story could have been condensed and continued on further to give more of a story than just the fast romance itself. It was not my kind of book i'm sorry to say.
This new adult vampire romance is an intriguing and mesmerizing read. A four-hundred year old vampire, Robert Chatham is a billionaire playboy who feeds then moves on never getting attached to one girl… until Liz. Shy American grad student, Liz is more interested in the chemistry of hemoglobin that the chemistry between her and any guy…until Robb. Robb has to choose between an old friend and chasing the girl, Liz learns his secret and has to decide to run or stay and they are both on a collision course that will change their lives.
This steady paced plot keeps reader entertained with suspense, some action, some humorous moments and romance. The author brings the story to life with vivid imagery and details that capture the imagination and the strong compelling characters are easily related to and grab the reader’s attention from the very beginning.
The attraction between Liz and Robb radiates from the pages, but there are a lot of issues to overcome before a romance can blossom. Liz captures the heart with her shy, vulnerable and insecure personality when it comes to the opposite sex and Robb captures it by his arrogant playboy attitude that hides the lonely heart.
The story is the age old vampire romance with a few twists that adds some depth to the story, a friend putting pressure on Robb makes a huge scene and Robb’s cancer research is what introduces him to Liz. The scientific aspect of the story might cause a few pauses in the story if the reader isn’t chemistry orientated like me and have to stumble over those big words, but luckily the author keeps it to a minimum and adds to some humorous dialogue and distractions in the story that keep the reader caught up in the drama. Overall I enjoyed the vampire romance and it makes a great addition to my Aubrey Rose collection of books.
A gifted copy was provided by the author for an honest review.
This book felt like an amazing start to our main characters' story. That's the problem with a story like this that's probably written as a standalone with no predetermined sequel: it just does not give the reader enough. I have to say this book was written very well, but I felt Aubrey Rose only gave us part of the story. There has to be more to this heroine and hero.
Liz is studying blood cancer cures in London. Originally from the States, she's your typical shy, education-driven, young woman. Robb has been living within the same body for over 400 years, since, you know, he's a vampire. When these two meet, it definitely isn't love at first sight. But as their days progress with each other in the chemistry lab, their hearts start to get lovey dovey too.
Overall, I felt this book was just unfinished. I'm not saying that in a bad way; it just seems like the story isn't over. I love when an author leaves you hanging for more when you know there will definitely be more. Without a sequel, I don't think this story has been done justice. But I loved the writing, and I loved our Liz and Robb, but they need a chance to grow in the reader's eyes. I'm giving this book 4 STARS out of 5 STARS. Give us that sequel Ms. Rose! Please!!

A well written and story, Heartbitten is a captivating paranormal romance that offers adventure, drama, passion and heart. While the ending is not a cliffhanger, it will leave readers yearning for more!
A copy of Heartbitten was received from the author in exchange for an honest review.
There's not much doubt about this one: it says right under the title, "A New Adult Vampire Romance." Liz is an American grad student living in London who's a bit of a clutz. Robb is the enigmatic benefactor of the lab she works in on campus. He's also a 400-year-old vampire who was in love with a girl named Eliza once. For the first time since (and after many, many, many attempts), he's discovered the girl who might take her place.
Not only does Liz look a bit like Eliza, but she's also interested in something dear to Robb's heart: blood diseases. Sexy! It's actually pretty cool. I mean, I'm just going to assume the technical jargon is kosher, because I haven't the slightest. But Liz is smart and no-nonsense and adorable, and Robb, despite his billionaire-playboy lifestyle and grouchy first impression, is smitten.
This book wasn't that holy-shit-fantastic, but I did read it in no time and enjoyed it for the most part, so I really don't care. The vampire technicalities were kept to a minimum, which is something I appreciate. No glittering. No aversion to sunlight or food. The only problem I had that's worth noting is that the ending doesn't feel complete at all, but it seems the author's plans are kind of up-in-the-air. Like, if enough people enjoy it, she'll write a sequel or something. I think it could have been a satisfying standalone with just a bit more resolution, but yeah, youz guyz LOVE your series, so the author is probably smartly hedging her bets.

This book had all the ingredients to be an awesome book, but I felt like it fell short of the mark. I wanted to love this story but it ended up being ok, because of the lack of progression in the story and the quick ending that left me with loads of questions.
This book was too short to properly develop the story line. The structure and writing were not the problem at all. I am actually considering reading another novel from the author because the style of writing was wonderful, and I want to give her another shot. My big problem with the book is that the simple answers like, how he became a vampire, how can he walk in the sun, and why did he owe his "friend", never came up. Additionally, Robb and Liz never really had time to fall in love, they meet each other and within 48 hours or so they are together, this has become a common issue in romance novels and one that I will never understand. I want to go along for the journey of a couple slowly and realistically falling for one another, I know I am crazy, after all Robb is a vampire and I am worried about realism.
Overall, this book made it into my ok pile for now, but I have not given up hope in this story. I would consider reading a sequel if and when Aubrey Rose decides to write one because I am interested enough to dive deeper into these characters.

This is my second book with vampires and I liked it very much. Robert Chapman became a vampire in his childhood, but devoted his life to relentlessly look for a "cure" that could render him his mortality back; after hundreds if years of loneliness, avoiding any meaningful relationship and with just the loving memory of his childhood sweetheart to warm his cold life, he meets Liz, who strongly evokes his lost love, Eliza. Liz, has her own demons, trying desperately to find a cure for leukemia, the disease that killed her younger sister.
The plot is interesting, Robert is a pretty fascinating character and the author is a talented story teller, witty and funny, all these making "Heartbitten" a very enjoyable read.
What I feel are the weaker points of the book: there is no development (even light) of Robert's life among vampires, or how he manages to maintain his youth while his "friend" is old and decrepit, Liz is a bit linear as character, needs to be built a bit more, she seems incapable of making a decision about her life except concerning her research, the end leaves the reader with the sensation of "unfinished" story. I loved the secondary characters, the devoted valet, the good doctor friend, the criminal vampire, are all well achieved. IF the author allows me a suggestion, I would like a follow up book with more to the story and characters, I am sure many readers would love it

Overall Rating: 2 Rockin' Stars!
The cover of this book and the blurb had me wanting to read it, but as I got further into the story I realized the plot wasn't developing and it was not building enough to keep me interested. Liz and Robb's relationship seemed discombobulated and didn't grow as I read the book. There was no chemistry or intrigue. I was left feeling there should have been more and the ending was like huh? what?
Overall, the book idea was satisfactory. This is the first book in this series and I would be interested in reading the next one to see how the author develops the characters.
I have mixed feelings about this book. It was okay. Not bad, but not that good, in my opinion. In a way I enjoyed this book. It was different from the usual vampire books and it did have some good moments in the book, especially in the earlier parts. The sparks between Rob and Liz were sizzling. I was even excited reading about their first encounters. I like the first few chapters but somewhere along the way it fell apart. The chemistry terms were too technical for me to enjoy. The story became dragging and the hero and heroine became boring. It lacked the passion and depth that I look for in romance stories. It had a lot of promise but failed to deliver all of them. So many questions were left unanswered that when I was through reading I was unsatisfied. Even though it is a vampire novel, it felt more like a simple New Adult. The hero is a vampire but the drama isn't. It's like the author just made him a vampire for the book to be called a vampire novel. Nevertheless, if ever this novel will have a 2nd book I will still read it. It might not be one of the best books I've read but it's interesting enough for me to look forward to the next book. There were lots of issues left hanging, especially about Rob's past, that I really want to know. I give this book 3.5 stars.

Truly brilliant book. I am a major fan of vampire books and what's not to love about Robb. The sexy, bad boy, playboy hottie vampire!!
Robb was turned when he was very young and he is now four hundred years old, is a billionaire and is a major playboy. Liz is a young, intelligent student who is with her friend Jenny a chemistry lab, working for Robb Chatham. There is chemistry between Robb and Liz from the moment they meet but Robb doesn't want to fall in love but as you all probably can guess, it wouldn't be a romance if Robb doesn't realise that he loves Liz. Which he does!! The problem between them is Robb is a vampire and he doesn't know how Liz will react or if it would be safe for Liz to know.
I did feel that the book progressed rather slowly and i would have loved to have known more about Robb's past and all more about Robb and Liz as a couple. It took ages for them to get together and i thought they wasn't enough of Robb pursuing Liz or Liz pursuing Robb. Overall though, i did really enjoy it and i have read quite a lot of Aubrey Rose's books and they are all really great. Did love both characters, especially Robb!! very very sexy vampire! Definitely recommend!
This is a very entertaining vampire story with a bored snobby Billionaire playboy Robb (Robert Chatham) who just happens to be a vampire and a very backwards, shy PHD major from America, Liz. But things aren’t always what they seem and as the story progresses you learn to love Robb and you see that he is truly an amazing soul.
Liz didn’t catch my attention till about half way through the book. I felt her character was not a strong as Robb’s though she was very likable and able to stand up against Robb’s pushing her to have his way. I do love her dedication to find a cure and how she is fine with who she is.
Secondary characters are always interesting and this book has a few. There is Thaddeus a villain of course who is definitely part of the story line and I can see him coming back in a sequel. Liz’s roommate and lab partner, Jenny as well as Gerry, Robb’s stoic butler play heavy in the progression of the storyline.
Both Robb and Liz’s characters expand throughout the story and the ending has you wanting to know more. I am heading over to read the next book in this series “BloodStricken”. Come join me!

I received this as an ARC for a honest review in a box set called Alphas Prefer Curves: A Curvy Girl Romance BBW Anthology (Volume One) I will attempt not to post any spoilers but there is always the chance!
This starts with a King and Queens son. Who dares to go out after dark. Then it fast forwards to the current century. Not really big news there but what happens from then on is a bunch of mistakes, twists and turns that you maybe can guess at but then a bad vamp enters who is terrorized that he is being hunted.
I have to say this story seems lacking just a tiny bit. So tiny in fact that the story is well written but gives the appearance of being bigger then what is written. You wait as if something bad is going to happen to the bad vamp besides getting kicked out of the building. But nothing happens, no clue on what the body is for or all the pulling of teeth.
Overall I would have given this a 5 star but the sexy scenes where weak, the bad vamp wasn't explained at the end and just left to go on his way.
"Heartbitten" was an "ok" read and the abrupt ending (and it was not even a "real" ending) left me dissatisfied. The story of Robb, the playboy vampire and innocent Liz had an interesting plot, but the background of Robb could've been told with more details.
Love scenes were sensual (but sometimes weird: calling the vagina "it"? Seriously?), but I felt like the romance department was lacking because the pace of the story was just too slow. No real ups and downs - and (yes, I'm still bummed about that) the ending left me scratching my head: What did the author want to tell us?
I think that this will be a series, because no way the story of Robb and Liz could end like that, but I'm not sure if I would buy a second installment of this series; it feels like an endless, dragged out plot :/
Sorry to be so negative about it, I did like the idea and plot of "Heartbitten", but the open ending was a turn off.
Long ago Robert Chatham realized he would never love another, he has spent his four hundred years proving exactly that with rotation of women and playboy ways. He is looking for something though, a cure to his blood disorder and knows he is getting closer. What he doesn't need is a distraction but he finds it anyway, flustered American student Liz. Liz is one of the people working on his special project and Robb can't seem to stay away. He wants her but he knows he shouldn't have her.
Gripping story, overall very enjoyable. Had a few holes that I am not sure if there is another book in the series but would have liked answers too. Liz is enamored by Robb and she knows he is harboring secrets, but when she discovers them will she be able to handle the truth. I liked that a lot of what drives Robb is his vulnerability. I hope there is a second book coming.

This book was a cute love story between a scientist and a vampire. As a scientist, I wholeheartedly endorse scientist paranormal romance twists!
Liz is a scientist/grad student running a blood lab. Her boss just happens to be Robb, a vampire trying to figure out the key to the healing power of his blood. Obviously, this vampire has some emotional baggage (what vampire doesn't?), but they would both be crazy to fight the insane amount of attraction between them.
Yes, there's misunderstandings and your typical martyr syndrome, but the love story was still pretty adorable. There's some solid story and characters in this book that beg for more -- is there more? I'm a sucker for a good HEA and this book delivers.
Robert Chatham is a self-obsessed billionaire playboy vampire who doesn't really think much beyond his current scope. Liz is a dedicated grad student studying abroad trying to find a cure for blood-born cancer. When Liz accidentally sees Robert in a rare moment of sensitivity, he doesn't make a good impression on her. When it turns out he runs the lab she works in, he quickly finds that she's the first girl he can't stay away from since he was human. Having read the sequel first, I had an idea on what happens in this story. I really liked the story and the introduction to the characters. I LOVE Robb's butler with what that poor guy has to deal with! One think that I loved about this the most was that, unlike other stories in the same genres, Robb didn't rush or push Liz into anything that her inexperience wasn't ready for. 5 stars
