This book contains many great stories about the history of Industrial Design. I had Carma Gorman as a professor in college and she was full of wonderful insightful information about Industrial Design. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in learning about the history of Industrial Design!
This book is a selection of writings and excerpts pertaining to the history of industrial design, organized chronologically. I had a hard time getting into this book, due to the essays at the beginning being written in 19th century prose. However, it got easier to read as we moved forward in time and eventually my initial decision to get rid of this book was completely reversed. I was intrigued by the point of view of the person who invented planned obsolescence. I empathized deeply with the design discourse at the turn of the century concerning the value of handmade goods vs. machined goods - a topic that I still feel is highly relevant today, even though we’re far past the industrial revolution. At the end, the selections start veering towards and hinting at design in the digital age. Overall I felt that the selected writings were thought provoking and covered a lot of ground.
