The year is 3015... The polar ice caps have melted and the deserts expanded, leaving the Earth a seared, crusty Hell. Meanwhile, nuclear fallout has blocked out the sun, plunging the world into a new ice age. (Yes, at the same time.)
The question on your mind?
What should I knit?!
Doomsday Knits is a collection of garments and accessories inspired by the post-apocalyptic genre of film, literature, and fashion. These cutting-edge fashion pieces are just as at home in your closet today as they will be in the dystopian wastelands of tomorrow.
There are thirty-two patterns in this book, and I kind of want to knit all of them. I've narrowed it down to my favourite dozen.
Don't get me wrong; this is, clearly and primarily, a knitting pattern collection. But it's one assembled with a sort of bright glittery love for stylized dystopic or post-apocalyptic settings, with little asides containing suggested lists of music or books or movies or games. The patterns are useable (I've knit a couple of the "I Was A Teenage Mutant" hats to give away to a local school; and the crown grafting means they are about the quickest hat pattern I have ever seen), the photos are pretty, and the only reason I did not get this in paperback was the cursed shipping charges.
(There may have been some enthusiastic colour printer use and a binder. Just saying.)
I'm guessing that people likely to use this are also likely to be on Ravelry, so I am providing a helpful link. Or you can look at the blog tour with links to where the individual designers wrote about the patterns; just scroll down, it's at the bottom of the post. :)
This is just amazingly and totally fun. The patterns are absolutely knittable and wearable, and my fashion savvy daughters even agree with me. The recommended viewing and reading lists are also useful, and there's even a handy-dandy flowchart to help you figure out what kind of apocalypse you are experiencing (hint: out of Girl Scout cookies doesn't count).
I have really enjoyed this book. The patterns are quite clever – and most are still wearable in our not-quite-doomsday world. I've made a fair few of the items already, and have plans to make a number more.
The layout is fun, the pictures are staged nicely, and I like that the patterns are separated into different doomsday scenarios. The extras (doomsday-ish movie lists and survival tips) really flesh out the cleverness of the book, and editor Alex Tinsley.
(Additionally, Tinsley had styling threads in her blog, linked on the book's Ravelry group, which helps illustrate the true wearability of the garments.)
A fantastic book of knitting projects, delightful patterns and wonderful inspiration. I love how the book is broken into sections depending on the kind of apocalypse that you get, from global warming, to runaway robots, to nuclear winter, it's all in good fun. There are also recommended reading, gaming, listening and watching lists scattered throughout! I have yarn and needles for at least 3 projects, with many more that I'd like to pick up!
this book is amazing. the patterns are well written and beautiful and the pictures are completely awesome. you cannot go wrong. it is absolutely full of awesome.
