Takanaga Hinako (高永ひなこ) is a Japanese author of Boys' Love manga.
She has also provided illustrations for several BL light novels by other authors, including The Guilty by Katsura Izumi. Her first manga story, 合格祈願 (Goukaku kigan, Prayers for a passing grade?), was published by Hanamaru Comics in 1997; it was later reworked as the first chapter of Challengers. Most of her works have been translated into foreign languages. She was a guest at YaoiCon 2007, invited by Juné, the US publishers of her popular series Little Butterfly.
When not making Boys' Love manga, she spends her time collecting Wallace & Gromit merchandise and playing Final Fantasy. Takanaga doesn’t like beer and people who are ignorant.

She comments that her biggest influence on her art and writing-style was KOUGA Yun, a famous shoujo manga artist whose works she read as a teenager.

Morinaga is getting along famously with Tatsumi. But just because the two are lovers now doesn’t mean all the bumps in the road are gone.

The author sticks to the established characters of the two men. Tatsumi doesn’t become sweet just because he has a lover. He still subjects Morinaga to borderline abuse that would be repellent in the real world. But Morinaga isn’t necessarily a pushover and he doesn’t yield just because Tatsumi becomes a little standoffish. However, Morinaga’s jealousy and insecurity are on full display here, as well as the occasions that give rise to them. He’s growing and moving away, something that doesn’t seem to bother Tatsumi, and Morinaga worries that he might be replaced, especially with attractive and sexy people trying out for the position of Tatsumi’s future assistants.

The regular story is joined by a side-plot involving two men whose trials were related in another volume. A rape victim, Kunihiro, and his oppressor, Masaki, struggle to reconcile their changing feelings. Incredibly, it’s the rapist whose fear and trembling we are witness to as he wonders why his victim doesn’t retaliate or express hatred against his attacker.

It’s themes like these that can make manga unsettling for those who despise such subjects and think they’re being treated falsely. But, make no mistake, the issue isn’t lightly brushed aside or ignored. Kunihiro’s bewildered sexuality has been straightened out; he’s certain about who he is and whom he wants. Masaki’s whirling feelings of suspicion, astonishment, fear and guilt over what he did to this man he may love play out against this newfound certainty and make his emotions just as compelling.

As always, the yaoi sex is really smoldering, accompanied with just enough angst to leaven any too-cute sweetness that occurs when two hot manga guys start rolling in the sheets. I really would like to see these characters grow up and move into new situations. But, if this stops with volume nine, I won’t complain.

Warning, we mention the rape that occurs at the end of the previous issue, if that stuff is not up your alley [frankly I don't know why you're reading yaoi cause that sort of thing kinda happens in a plentiful manner in these kinds of stories] but you've been warned.

I'm glad that I finally got my hands on this issue.

This is one of my favorite series from when I was heavily into the yaoi genre. I'm into LGBTQA+ works still, but yaoi is more of a, well a fetish genre. It's women writing a story where men fall in love that feels heavily similar to men writing a story about women falling in love, with a sprinkling of eroticism. Now before your Jimmy's get rustled, I want to explain, a big part of how most of these relationships in yaoi manga start include some silly, or convoluted way wherein the main characters have sex, and then try to build a relationship. The whole convoluted sex part, more often than not is forced in some way, which leaves a terrible taste in my mouth. You can have an awesome, sexy story without that part. But it's become such a staple of the genre I don't think we're gunna change it that easily.

There's 2 important things that have changed with this issue that I'm pretty proud of. First, in the main story Morinaga and Tatsumi are getting slowly better at communicating with each other and actually building a solid relationship on trust and mutual understanding. It's still a budding relationship, so it's gunna be rocky for a while, but they're working very hard.

Secondly, in the extra story at the end of the book we've got a guy who's realized his behavior with his old school friend was inappropriate, he realizes the thing he did was a literal CRIME, and when faced with advances from his school friend does not immediately accept him into a relationship but genuinely seems concerned for the guy and suggest that he sees a therapist and gets some counseling concerning the trauma he's recently been submitted to. I feel like this is the proper way someone should feel and react after they raped a person. Although I more firmly believe that they should march their sorry ass straight to jail if they're actually feeling guilty about it BUT, that's asking too much for this kind of story. Regardless, I am happy that the author decided to address this issue in a more healthy way than what could have happened in the story.

It's still full of slapstick, and dumb drama, and our favorite characters gets some steamy moments in between, so not a lot has changed, but the parts that have changed, have changed for the better. They are trying not to normalize the kinds of relationships that stem from forcing someone to perform for you sexually, or assaulting someone. Which is a difficult stance to take considering how the main story started out, but I mean, listen you don't control when you become a more informed person. You don't control when you realize Oh shit, I'm perpetuating an unhealthy mindset and normalizing toxic behaviors. I'm glad that the author realized, hey this is kinda not ok, and tried to address that with some changes that diverge heavily from the expected outcome most yaoi manga have to this kind of situation.

Am I gunna read the rest of this series, you bet your ass I will, as soon as I can get my hands on them.

Do I recommend this series, honestly, I wouldn't for people who are sensitive to watching someone be forced into sexual situations without proper consent. I fell in love with the slapstick of it, and I find myself skipping past the steamy sections to get to the funny ones. I genuinely want an LGBTQA+ manga written that's mostly slapstick, with a healthy, loving relationship at the center of it [guess I have to write it myself]. So I will, personally, finish the series because I want to see how it continues, and how the author has grown and will try to change how yaoi manga is written and handled, at least her own.

Review for volumes 1-12

Takanaga Hinako has always been a hit or miss author for me; she's got a few really nice works but others are either too heavy on the comedy or graphic side. The Tyrant Falls in Love lands somewhere in between which makes it a really difficult one for me to rate. I love the characters, it's got just the right amount of humour and a nice enough story. But at the same time, there are a lot of problematic themes and a lot of the story is just contrived and dragged for the sake of adding more sexual scenes.

It's been a long time since I last read it and I remember struggling with it back then already. No matter how you twist and turn it, the story starts off with one of the main characters raping the other. Never mind that he says sorry and the other eventually accepts the apology, I just found it difficult to go along with the story knowing how it started. That being said, I do actually really like the characters, not just the main ones but also all the side cast - my favourite is probably Isogai, the seemingly only straight male character in the whole series who's just hilarious.

The story in itself is also not bad, it does raise some interesting subjects. The main issue, apart from the fact that it starts off with rape, is that I feel the story should have been wrapped up several volumes ago already. There have been several points in the story of character development where one could have drawn the line, but not only are new chapters released at a very slow pace, it mostly just feels like it is drawn out for the sake of drawing more smut. The character development keeps spiralling backwards just for the main characters to be confronted with the exact same issues. It's great that they always talk things out, but they always find themselves back at the same problem.

I really like Takanaga's art, though, but that too isn't enough to keep me reading. For a series of which I had conflicted feelings from the start, I just don't see myself waiting around for yet another volume and hoping it's the last. I've read up to 12 volumes and feel that it is time to drop this one.

I kinda liked that Souichi asked Morinaga how is he measuring feelings, cause considering how all this begun, Souichi's feelings were on negative numbers when we started and now he's on a better position on the scale. Of course right now it can't compare with Morinaga's intense feelings but it's nice they talked it out.
The more toxic couple is back for this volume but not my boy Isogai.

I wanted to weep when Morinaga was suffering because he is right. It seems like Sempai doesn't not love him as much as he loves Sempai :( True, we have to take into account Sempai's character, but poor Morinaga suffers so much and he gets jealous of whoever is near Sempai, including his new assistants. On the other hand, I understand why Sempai doesn't get jealous... Morinaga keeps telling him he loves him, so why would he?

I expect that this is not the end. Or else...

I find myself between never wanting this to end and will I ever get to see the final word? I’ve been following this for about more than 5 years now. I’m a little bit tired of this, but I definitely will cry if this ends with the next volume. My favorite yaoi so far and ever.
